Dearly departed

Defensive lineman Anthony Mermea’s decision to leave the Warriors is neither surprising (he hinted at the move the past two months) nor unique, especially for a player who redshirted during his first college semester.

The first time away from home for an extended period is when some freshmen reflect on whether the school or the program is the right fit. Running back/slotback Andrew Pearman, receiver Kwamane Bowens, defensive back Le’Marcus Gibson, cornerback Ray Bass and linebacker Drake Miller were among the highly regarded recruits who left UH after a year.

Sometimes playing time or a chance to play at a better-fit program are factors. Wideout Trevor Davis and defensive lineman Abu Maafala both transferred to California after two UH seasons. Quarterback Steele Jantz left for Iowa State.

After the 2004 season, four quarterbacks left UH — Taylor Humphrey, Brandon Satcher, Ryan Stickler and Jack Rolovich.

Offensive lineman Hauoli Wong and Sully Wiefels left the team during training camp. A freshman quit on the second of training camp. Offensive linemen Jeremy Perry signed with UH, but decided not to fax a copy and ended up at Oregon State.

George Ornellas, one of the greatest players in Hawaii prep history, departed in the middle of a season.

Two offensive coordinators — Zak Hill and Aaron Price — departed before even calling a play in a game.

Each program and player deserves to find happiness and the right fit. But it is unfortunate that a school invests time and money in recruiting and training a player who leaves early. And it’s tough on a player who redshirted as a freshman and now must redshirt if he transfers to an FBS school this year. At this stage, with the blue-shirt option no longer allowable, it is difficult for an exiting player to find an available scholarship. The other option is to attend a junior college, and go through the recruiting process in another year.

Best wishes to all who come, stay and go.

The NCAA allows teams to sign only 25 players each year. In the past, if somebody didn’t qualify, such as Netane Muti, UH could sign another to a letter of intent. UH could sign people to a scholarship agreement, but that would mean finding available room on the 25 initials. UH used all 25 of its initials for 2018. Also in the past, a player could join and once training camp started, he would go on a scholarship that would be counted as an initial toward the next recruiting class. But that blue-shirt option no longer exists.
So, it would be unlikely UH would add a scholarship transfer.

    Aloha Folks!

Players will do what they think is right. Programs and coaches will do what they think is right. Things can change at any given time.

Speculation about a player leaving or a program changing isn’t as important as simple support.
This is why I wait until the games are played to see what’s really going on. Success there is what makes players, coaches and fans happy.

Love the Warriors and wish all players, past and present the best!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

So was Mermea not quite D1 ready to play & contribute this past season? Guessing that although being a highly regarded recruit, was not quite at the level needed to make that “it” impact?

I really liked and was very impressed with Trevor Davis! Wondering what went wrong here to have him go to Cal???

  16. Akamai Okole February 27, 2018 3:05 pm

    Great Afternoon All!

    Okayokayokay…

Reports of my demise have been greatly exaggerated…

  17. J-Dog February 27, 2018 3:31 pm

Trevor Davis could have been one of the all time great WR’s had he been here at UH for all 4 seasons and had the run and shoot been allowed to remain.

Unfortunately and wisely, he did not want to be a part of chow ball. The move to Cal under Sonny Dykes more spread out offense worked out for him, and he still appears to have much love for UH and Hawaii. I still root for the guy as I didn’t blame him for leaving.

  18. cappie the dog February 27, 2018 6:26 pm

Since Trevor Davis is recognized as a former Warrior, whose statistics is documented in the pros with Hawaii connections section, Kyle Dowdy should be added to the Minor League Report next season.

  19. Isleboy February 27, 2018 9:28 pm

Why did Trevor Davis leave. Went to practice at hickam
One day and norm chow was yelling at Trevor Davis.

He walked off field and started running laps around track.
He left program a month later…

2012 roster has a nice collection of receivers that might have done well had Chow used the run and shoot. Trevor Davis and Chris Gant on the outside. Miah Ostrowski and Allen Sampson in the slots. Billy Ray Stutzmann could play both positions. Justin Clapp was a good route runner and would have been a versatile H back. There was a still raw Scott Harding and a freshman Sampson Anguay, two guys who might have gotten a lot of YAC numbers. The power back would have been Iosefa. Might have been a more watchable product than “Chow Ball”. Too bad.

  21. A-House February 28, 2018 6:56 am

T Davis — was there not a post many moons ago that he was asked to leave UH by upper campus and had nothing to do with leaving UH football

agree he was a talented WR

#23 – maybe you mean W. Gregory, RB?

  23. Lowtone123 February 28, 2018 8:08 am

There was a time when transfers would come here and flourish. Colt Brennan and Golden Richards comes to mind. The late Gavin Smith came from UCLA although in basketball.
