R&S brings more opportunities
The announcement that Nick Rolovich will call the offensive plays and the Warriors will re-install the run-and-shoot as the base scheme is good news for:
> The offense: Rolovich has studied and run several schemes, but he is most comfortable with the run-and-shoot. Even when the scheme has been shaken with aggressive pass rushes, clingy defenders and nit-picky officiating, it is always a threat to produce yards and points … and fun.
> Unity: Back when they were quarterback and center, as well as housemates who practiced snaps in the hallway, Rolovich and offensive coordinator Brian Smith have shared similar thoughts on strategy. With Smith in the coaches’ booth transmitting important intel, Rolovich has a trusted and experienced pair of eyes to decide plays.
> QBs: The run-pass option was most effective when the QB is a threat to run. Dru Brown and Cole McDonald ran well (an average of 7.8 yards on non-sack scrambles or keepers) but not often (44 non-sack rushes) in 2017. They want to throw. This is their chance to throw. And the offense also will benefit Cole Brownholtz and freshmen Chevan Cordeiro and Jeremy Moussa.
> Receivers: The four-wide offense means, well, there will be at least four receivers on the field most of the time. With Keelan Ewaliko and Ammon Barker graduated, and Dylan Collie transferring, there are a lot of opportunities available.
> Big back: With a fourth receiver, that means one fewer potential blocker. But that also means the return of the super-sized back. Look for Hekili Keliiliki, Kaiwi Chung and, even, Dakota Torres to get some carries.
Many of us will be looking forward to seeing the RnS back! Players, better get ready.
Also looking forward to an aggressive defense which can make adjustments as necessary.
Sounds good to me. At least it will make the games a little more interesting. Now go get some DT’s!
As someone posted, hope Rolo uses a tight end
as a receiver and not just as a tight end. Why not?
and near the goal line – use the Jumbo Package to punch it in …
Hekili Keliiliki, Kaiwi Chung and Dakota Torres.
No need fool around with fancy “we going out think the defense” kine plays.
GO WARRIORS !!!
Is there any budget for new unis? R&S was fun to watch but awesome when we had the dark green helmet, black with green numbers with the tapa around the thighs
Like this news very much! Each play is a potential score, and the Warriors have the players to do it.
GO WARRIORS!!!
DC Batoon plans to bring “attacking defense” to Manoa.
by Sam Spangler, from yesterday.

#2 im more concerned with Oline depth at this point! Losing D. Allen, posa and Wa’a to graduation and with last years loses in tupai and king james. With 8 scholied remaining, I think we will target 2-3 wr, 2-3 ol, 2-3 db, 1 jc DT.
Best wishes Warriors but I don’t feel that
Rolo and company will fare will with R n S
Don’t believe He truly believes in it.
He woulda ran it last two years.
It’s like army triple option their coach breaths it… it’s who they are,It’s a philosophy…just listen to mouse describe
it…and JJ ( watch what he does in Canada)
Everybody’s running RPO all college Defenses have caught up to it.
R n S is the way… always was
Bring back RON LEE you’ll see!!
Tightends in the slot would be crazy.
I would like to see the R&S again.
Hopefully it will bring the fans back to Aloha stadium.
It will certainly get a lot of national media attention.
Did Ron Lee run the RNS in Chow’s first year?
Why wasn’t the RNS established as the base back in 2016?
Could have still utilized Dru as a running QB in the RNS. Bryant Moniz was awesome.
The problem last year with the RPO was Dru didn’t run and Cole didn’t pass. As mentioned a million times, the offense was too predictable.
Dru had 2 years to lock down his spot, but regressed. For the backups, if Rolo didnt feel either Cole’s had it in them a few months ago, I don’t think it’s going to miraculously change with going to the RNS.
Might be time to hand the reigns over to the 2 HS guys or maybe even recruit a JC QB or D1 Transfer.
Also please no more excuses about an offense taking 2-3 years to learn. Milton, Tagavailoa & Taamu all squashed that myth. Heck how many True Frosh QB have torched Hawaii recently.
#11.
Mack replaced Ron Lee with Rolo.
Ron Lee was never on Chow’s staff.
I hope this new coach will steer his players to Manoa.
Kahuku announced the hiring of Sterling Carvalho as its head varsity football coach today.
Carvalho had coached the junior varsity team for the past three seasons.
He replaces interim coach Makoa Freitas, who went 11-2 this past season, won an OIA title, and advanced to the state title game in the Open Division.
Carvalho, a Kauai High graduate and former quarterback, is a former assistant under previous Kahuku head coach Reggie Torres. .
Kahuku HC any relation to Bernard, the Mayor of Kauai County and former OL?
#9:
crazy good or bad?
if bad, why?
good way to confuse the defense — no? — thinking outside the box! — can be used as a “feint” and run the ball — such as a QB draw
Today’s SA article on the return of the RNS listed Timmy Chang’s and Colt Brennan’s tons of yardage. Also Rolo commented on the RNS being a high risk, but high reward offense. Wondering if Timmy’s NCAA record of interceptions, that will never be broken, is a by product of the RNS?
Looks like at Kahuku, you either win the State title or you are out.
Now the defense needs to stiffen up as they won’t be seeing much running in practice with this shift to just passing the ball. Hope run based, grind em out MWC schools like SDSU, Boise State, CSU, & USU won’t have a field day because of this. Will running backs need to be recruited or needed anymore at UH? Just convert a LB or former TE for blocking (Torres). Doesn’t mean anything if you don’t have the players, though.
Gotta give the fan base what they want or else they won’t attend games (like an NFL team).
I’m pretty sure Sterling was a QB for Kahuku in the 90s.
He was on either the JV or Varsity staff for over 15 years. When on the Varsity he was the QB and assistant coach. He most recently was the JV head coach for the crew that will be juniors next school year.
His uncle is Bernard Carvalho, brother is the late Waika Carvalho.
Oh and brother can surf pretty good, too.
Congrats Ster!!!
Old School Dave, that is my concern as well. Will running backs even want to go to UH knowing they may spend most of their time blocking instead of carrying the rock? Will the running backs currently at UH want to stay, or will some transfer out?
Excited to see Rolo’s version of the R n S I think it will be awesome. Collie picked the wrong time to leave he would have been able to put up some stats in this offense. I hope Tullis is give a chance to win the job for on of the slots, I think he is actually more talented the Collie and could have a breakout year. Also would like to see Stubblefield moved to the slot.
people make like we had no running backs between 1999 and 2011. Here are some names:
Avion Weaver
Afatia Thompson
James Fenderson
Mike Bass
West Keliikipi
John West
Michael Brewster
Thero Mitchell
Regan Mauia
Nate Ilaoa
Kealoha Pilares
Leon Wright-Jackson
Alex Green
Joey Iosefa
I remember all of these names because they all had an impact and all made plays at RB at some point in their career. There will always be quality RBs who work hard and care about blocking and get overlooked by other schools for whatever reason.
Plus, I think Rolo will use his RBs more than a tradtional r&s offense would.
I wonder if Chip Kelly is kicking himself taking the UCLA job over interviewing for the Titans job first.
Yeah…there is a misconception that you need some kind of big back to be able to make the RnS work. Barry Sanders at 5-8 200lbs was able to be productive in this offense. So was Mike Bass, Michael Brewsters and Thero Mitchell. None was over 6-0 and only Mitchell of the three was over 200lbs.
I can see Keliiliki being somebody that can succeed but I also can see someone like MIles Reed being a potent part of this offense too. The guy only need a little space to turn a yard into 5-6 yards. With the defense all spread out to cover the receiver, I can see Miles Reed doing damage similar to what Mike Bass and Micheal Brewster. Freddy Holly is in between Reed and Keliiliki in terms of size so maybe he can be a nice fit for this offense too?
All three can contribute so we should be pretty good at RB.

Educational read, for me at least.
#8 & #12, if you peruse the morning periodical, Rolo explained why he didn’t go full R&S earlier. If you no believe him, fine, but try read first.
