Just say, ‘No’
The Baker said to Fred: “I’m making 15 apple pies that I’m giving away for free on Wednesday. Fourteen people already said they want a pie. I like you, and I’ll save a pie for you, if you want it. But if you don’t want it, that’s OK, there are several other people who will take it. Just let me know.”
Fred said he is interested. Fred then visited the bakery, had a sample, and talked to other customers about the Baker’s pies.
Later, Fred called the Baker and said he wanted the pie.
The Baker said: “Are you sure? I really want you to have it. But if you’re just being polite and you really don’t want it, it’s OK. I can find somebody else. No problem. You won’t be hurting my feelings if you don’t want the pie.”
Fred insisted he wanted it and would pick it up on Wednesday. The Baker said he would hold a pie for Fred.
On Wednesday, everybody picked up a pie except Fred.
On Thursday, still no Fred.
Same thing the next day.
Finally, Fred said, “Thank you very much for the offer, but I think I might look for a pie from somewhere else.”
The lesson: If you don’t want the pie, just say, “No.”
Well we know who Fred is. Oh well…NO need da buggah. We only need committed and decisive Warriors who want not just a piece, but the whole pie.
Go Warriors!
Haka:
It was purely hypothetical.
But there are a lot of people in the world who have difficulty saying no.
But it’s better to turn somebody down than to make them wait around.
I agree. Just say no if the Warriors is not the right fit.
I think it;s a matter of fairness.
If you book a hotel room, but then decide you don’t want it, it’s better to notify the hotel immediately so the room can be given to someone else. It’s not fair to the hotel — or a person waiting — to hold a room that won’t be used.
I know UH’s in-state tuition is less than many other schools and blah, blah, blah. But UH is the only public university in the state, so the options are limited. All I know is whenever I had to write that tuition/fees check for my son every semester, I thought: “Man, I hope everyone on scholarship appreciates the value of a free education.” And that they should go to the rec center and ride TheBus and take as many classes as possible …
Recruting for both sides is hard, but you have to be open and honest. I guess sometimes one side wants their pie and eat everyone’s too.
Love this post.
Roger Ebert, in his final years, didn’t always write about movies on his blog and that was some of his best posts.
That is why he published a book about the rice pot. It was born from his online writing.
Looks like Fresno St in-state tuition is less than UH’s. Also SDSU, Cal and State Fullerton’s are less. UCI and UCSB appear to be more.

Maddog…An unconfirmed source says that Batoon has been offered the DC job.
Mr. Tsai , your common sense approach to the world is very refreshing. You present real solutions to real problems. You would make a great governor of our State. I look forward to your words of wisdom every day. Thanks, from a lurker and a fan. Happy New Year!
Islandman, thanks for the info. The way I see it, interest has to show for an offer to be made. We’ll see. I just want some of these staff positions cleared up ASAP. As far as the pie analogy, if someone strings me and my pie along-they get the Soupy Sales treatment! GoWarriors!
Maybe Fred’s parent’s really wanted the pie from the other Bakery. At the end of the day who you going to make happy the Baker who will feed you temporarily or the source that has been feeding you since “ever since”.
This happens every year. Don’t hate the Freds 🙂
The haka can stay. Polynesian dance. Probably about 1829. Hawai’i was still wilderness. It is no longer them. Our past never was “us”. So it can stay. Good for history majors or tales.
Do you eat Saimin? Yes.
I work in Automotive Retail and I can tell you that we get customers all the time who tell me that they will come to pick up a specific item they need for their car so as a courtesy I let them know that I will hold the part for them (many times we only have one) but they never show up and never call to cancel.
Pie In The Sky…
Pie In The Face…
Fred may taste the pie at the other bakery and really not like it, and if enough love was shown in the beginning, he may return to the bakery for a happy ending
Hope we don’t get anymore coaches in their 20s.
Who is this Fred?
just say no!! well if all you get is no from a lot of people. you got a problem.
every try to drive a ship with no crew? ship runs into a obstacle and ends up sinking!!!!
Ship needs some yes’s or its doomed!!!!!
Maybe other bakers were offering Fred a pie also so he had options, could only eat one pie but didn’t want to lose them just in case any of the bakers changed their minds. Maybe Fred was developing a good relationship with the baker’s assistant baker but then the assistant left for another bakery. Or maybe the other baker told Fred “I really want you to have this pie and will add free coffee.”
We shouldn’t hate Fred
But also shouldn’t cheer for him or wish him well with his other pie.
Somebody help me here. Are we talking about Duggan, Baraka Beckett, Panoke…? or all of the above? Or none of the above?
Got to keep showing love until the LOI is signed.
Beau Yap decommitted from Baylor
Mana Lolotai from Oregon St
Cayman Shutter from New Mexico
Steven Lakalaka from UCLA
Keith Kirkwood from Temple
Dejon Allen from Arizona St
Ammon Barker from UCLA
Solomon Mautatia from Oregon St
Then you have guys like Kealoha Pilares who actually signed with Air Force then changed his mind.
Recruiting is a 2 way street. We win some, lose some, some later transfer away, some transfer back.
Oops Keith Kirkwood decommitted from Rutgers and later transferred to Temple
I HEARD THERE IS A RUMOR THAT PANOKE HAS A REASON FOR NOT SIGNING .AND IT WAS BECAUSE HE HAS DONE SOMETHING WRONG THAT WAS NOT TRUE SO HE MAY SIGN LATER.
Amen bigwave! Dont forget the big one this season, jonah kahawai-welch
The baker must have had some haupia pie available because he finally got some customers from Hawaii. Good luck to Fred. At least Fred didn’t dismiss the pie as “too junk”. I think Fred might have seen some of the others who were getting pie and may have gotten jealous or maybe it was because the assistant baker went to a different bakery. Whatever the reason both Fred and the bakery will be solid in the near future. Cant wait for next season.
Similar to Pilares, DT Lui Fuga & DE La’anui Correa came home to attend UH before enrolling as true frosh at UNLV.
22/31
Follow the bouncing ball…
Not Duggan he is not a prospective student/athlete
Not Panoke he is quite committed it’s been reiterated too often now.
So what’s that spell?
Fred’s pride won’t allow him to admit that he simply can’t afford the pie. He’s overextended for the holidays and that extra bit would be the straw that breaks the camel’s back as well as his marriage. Poor Fred.
I think the point ST was making was that “Fred” keeps saying “yes” when the “baker” asks for definitive clarity on the acceptance of the pie, but when the pie is ready he doesn’t pick it up or let the baker know that he doesn’t want it. The baker has to call to find out when it would have been better for both parties for Fred to just have said “no” the first time. I think, in the de-commitment cases mentioned above, the “Fred’s” didn’t string the process out, but made definitive and responsible decisions and let the “bakers” know the answer was “no”. Anyways, it is hard for both sides and the end result is, well, the end result. Best wishes to both the baker and Fred.
Spelling bee…following the bouncing ball…
Maybe Rolo should have seen Kifi’s post 2 years ago.

Your coaching staff needs recruiters. •Inner city LAX, San Diego, and Oakland. •San Diego, Orange County, Valley, Northern Cal. •Poly’s from Cali, Texas, Utah, Samoa, Tonga, and New Zealand. Also someone with access to Austrailia.
Cory Batoon should be added to the staff. He has been instrumental in putting ‘Ole Miss at the top of the recruiting standings in the SEC
http://www.hawaiiwarriorworld.com/warrior-beat/uhs-new-coach-is-rolo/
Time to move on from Fred; maybe he’ll be looking farther East for a bakery. If he doesn’t find one that suits his tastes, he may be left with a heaping helping of humble pie.
All speculation, but if it is Cory Batoon, he departed Ole Miss on a sour note, being relieved of his on-field duties while there (STs & Safeties). Followed the former Ole Miss D-line coach to FAU, who took the DC job under Lane Kiffin in 2017. Interesting note in that $120,000 in Florida (Batoon’s salary) comes out to around $200,000 comparably when you factor in the high cost of living in paradise.
https://www.redcuprebellion.com/2016/12/30/14129962/corey-batoon-florida-atlantic-ole-miss-special-teams-safties-coach
Had to laugh when I saw a bewildered couple from the mainland just astounded at the prices of goods at the local Safeway in Honolulu.
Maybe he wants a bigger piece of the pie than what is being offered. Or maybe someone offered him pieces of a different favor pie. Now he has to take his time to compare the pieces of pies offered and check with his family on what favor they want.
The best story was when a touted JUCO player from California, who was from Hawaii, took a recruiting trip here and disappeared at the airport when the UH coaches (during Chow’s regime) went to pick him up. He later signed with Oregon State, but grades tripped him up. Think he ended up at a D-II school in Mississippi or Texas.
Lots of stories of recruits in football and basketball who tripped UH, with no intention of playing here. Goes back to the Bruce O Neil and Larry Price days. Nowadays, coaches are much more cautious and ask a lot of questions before flying a recruit out here.
I don’t think the Baker has enough clout to tell customers, “If you don’t want the pie, just say, ‘No.’”
Consistently win and appear in the top 25 Bakery’s and then you can act like the “Pie Nazi”
with all the bantering about “Fred” — I am reminded of our Ohio State tour guide who mentioned that all recruits are given 3 days to accept a scholarship
after that, there is NO second chance
yes, yes, perhaps THE OHIO STATE can do this, but food for thought?
No baker has any control over who shows up on the pie day. Hopefully, the baker has gotten to know each person well enough to know he’s going to pick up the pie. Unfortunately, no one is that kind of insight … and the result is an occasional mistake. Can’t blame the baker … and pie recipient is often too young to not be really sure.
PS: I noted a change in attitude after an uncommitted pie eater chose Fresno State over the UH … but this also happen just as two assistant bakers chose to move to Oregon.
Bunch of mommahs get together.
Mom1: “My boy brought me a pie from Liliha Bakery”
Mom2: “My boy brought me a pie from Teds Bakery:
Mom3, gets on the phone, “Boy, forget about the pie from KCC Student Bakery, go Hawaiian Pie Company”
47.
Of course you know he was pulling your leg.
Howzit Tsaikos!
BigWave – as a taster of many pies from KCC Student Bakery (among other goodies), I can truly they’re just as good as any of the other 3 places you mentioned. 😆
All this bakery talk is making me hungry. I don’t even remember the last time I had a malasada.
jm2375, exactly… it’s not the product it’s the name brand and packaging that some parents like to drop. This has always been a problem for the UH Baker when dealing with prospects. To always blame the kid is not always the case
Fred, if you are reading this, and change your mind I’ll buy you a pie. Oh wait, never mind, bakery may be forced to shutdown
As long as the Baker is true to his word, makes his pie the best it can be, he shouldn’t worry about persnickety pie prospects.
We have a good Baker, and if somebody don’t want his pie, that’s on them. Some will, some won’t, so what, move on. A proper pie picker is gonna want that pie.
GO WARRIORS!!!
Lowtone123
Yikes.
I think I’m one of those who didn’t pick up an auto part.
I might be a “Fred.”
Fred has been a closet gay for many years. His friend since childhood, the baker, won’t serve gays because of his “religious” beliefs. The baker still doesn’t know that Fred is secretly gay. Fred is supposed to go to a party hosted by his gay friends. Fred is torn as to whether or not he should take his baker friend’s pie to this party and have someone candidly take photos of it and post it online. Or would his friends get offended if he brought Fred’s pie to their party, no matter how delicious it is? Furthermore, would he ultimately be jeopardizing his friendship with Fred if exposed on social media?
#45
Problem is Fred’s family, friends, neighbors, classmates, coaches, etc. all ask him is he’s going to get pie from the other bakeries and not our baker friend. Since all Fred is hearing is about the other bakeries, he tends to want those other pies. We need everyone to tell Fred if he’s getting pie from our baker, don’t even mention the others.
ST baked a great pie today and the posters are buying it! Hehehe…
Go Warriors!
On a side note, former Stanford OC and new Rice HC, Mike Bloomgren, hired Brian Smith and Coach Mack as coordinators for the 2018 season
http://www.riceowls.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/121217aab.html
Rhubarb Pie for Big Wave…
Gave me a sour puss.
Actually, rhubarb pie with apples is actually delicious.
By itself, no.
BigWave:
you are “funning” us with your post #52
interesting lead into making me bring up the article
have a good one!!!
The Baker should use his Grandma’s family recipe for Strawberry Guava-Mango pie, than no one else bakes at any other bakery.
If Fred doesn’t pick up the pie on Wednesday, then the pie goes to Justus on Thursday.
Now we know that Fred was on the board through Friday……and still could be on the board come February.
Some banks say no after you default.
Alamo Bowl, Stanford’s Bryce Love and breaking McCaffery’s career rushing record.
For me?
Washington State, Holiday Bowl
D
21-3, Stanford. Game still on.
I wonder if the HTA took it from the Community fund in Halawa. Hawai’i Bowl. $100,000 dollars
Dave Aranda came to UH from Delta State and Cal Lutheran before that. Sometimes you get lucky and find a talented and hungry coach from the small colleges. The one key ingredient is that they are all “grinders” who live, breath, eat, and sleep football.
I wonder if the HTA took it from the Community fund in Halawa. Hawai’i Bowl. $100,000 dollars
I would think so.
The prize was $500,000 dollars. Hawai’i Bowl.
Lassner was supposed to sign it and ok it? $750,000 cash prize Hawai’i Bowl. I guess.
David Lassner ok(ing) the prize while HTA demands it, $750,000 dollars. Can you imagine this scenario? No one knows Ige in Halawa. Now this, the money gone. Fade away jump shot by Ige.
Looking at the list of replacements for coaches in this and previous posts that left is a joke. The names are not a step up but a lateral move at best maybe lower. Talk about hiring experience, not much there.
Howzit Everybody,
Here’s a name that hasn’t been discussed for DC but I feel maybe a dark horse, Victor Santa Cruz, head coach of Azusa Pacific. Former Warrior, has been a DC before, been in the business for a long time now and has a lot of experience.
Michigan State, and escuela. 21-3
How anout a coach at Blink, San Mateo, and/Or Mt. Sac?
Blinn
Maybe it’s Ferd Lewis lol
Gee, why is everyone speaking and writing in tongues? If you no like the pie beat it already!
Bottom line is that winning puts more butts in seats than having local players. Perfect recipe would be winning with a ton of local talent but as many have said I want the best recruiting class possible regardless of where the kids come from. If Batoon can recruit then we can give him a slight pass on his shortcomings at the DB coach at Ole Miss. Either you coach up the kids real good or you recruit better talent and let them play. Problem with Chow was he didn’t recruit very well and his staff didn’t coach them up, lose lose situation. Seems like Rolo is definitely recruiting better talent.
#76 Chow recruited the whole mainland
St judges,Kennedy tuamasalii.Kau Gifford
John Ursa,Lakalaka Jahlani travails Stubblfield,Ben Fonoau..there are many
Many more..allbthe big recievers..
Ewaliko so much
JJ started the upswing. Since then McMackin, Chow, Rolovich have combined under .500 record.
The football has gone sour. And there is too much lemon, and not enough sweetners. What now?
No tongues. The football is shitty.
What is wrong with Hawai’i? No fans in the stands. Who would want to watch Hawai’i lose?
No one would want to pay the price of the ticket as listed. S.A. is the only organization interested in Hawai’i football. This year was a red ink. What for? Not my style or problem.
Some Hawaii people do too much drugs
58.
I have something to add about banks, but I don’t want to be under moderation again.
#80 KOH IG NOR
Agreed. You should take your style and boycott Hawaii football, SA and the Warrior Beat. Not your problem and shouldn’t be one.
Will ST hit a hundred before new blog?
85 bottles of gator aid on the wall….
I had hot apple pie for breakfast
topped with ice cream and banana
Sugar high…
Good defensive players know how to juke out
opposing offensive players out of their jock straps.
Just to set the record straight, Greg McMackin had a winning record, 29 W – 25 L. In 2010, Hawaii was WAC co-champ with a 7-1 conference record; 10-4 overall. In three years, 2009-2011, McMackin had one losing season, 2011 (6-7). He had three wins in three years against Pac-12 schools. McMackin was a winning coach.
Actually from 2009-2011, Coach Mack had 2 losing seasons, ’09 & ’11 (6-7), which in today’s Hawaii lore equates to a Bowl invite like 2016.
HMan, you left out the 2008 winning season when Mack went 7-6 and lost to Notre Dame and their un-PC Dance.
Who doesn’t like pie?
KOH I NOR – did you used to be “Ohana Hawaii” and “Dave” before that?
Another lesson…Don’t be a Fred.
In my opinion we need a DC who is a little older than Rolovich, like the setup they have in Los Angles (Rams). We need a coach who can manage all the position coaches and oversee all the teaching aspects then “coordinate” all those pieces into one cohesive unit. It looked like they struggled with that part last year as compared to the year before. The X’s and O’s won’t work right without the proper preparation. I think the pieces were there last year but were mismanaged by a young staff trying to find an identity. I do believe Suianoa will be a good coordinator someday. Even Aranda had some growing pains here on his way to stardom. Next year the pieces look incredible but it could still fail if its mismanaged so I hope we get a good “Manager”
Actually Chow recruited fairly well. He just couldn’t coach without power five type players. Somewhat biased as well and stubborn. He let Aranda go and Rolo didn’t fit his old school offense. I don’t know why the Board of Rodents gave him the pass. At least he’s gone. Now Rolo has to stop hiring only friends and get more experience. I am sick and tired of watching cartoonish football.
Also, there looks to be a lot of “athletes” on next years roster of all shapes and sizes so I do expect much more productivity out of the special teams coverage units. A little better management in that area as well frankly. Growing pains. I hope we grow into a 7’2″ BEAST
I believe McMackin’s loss to UNLV when 20 pt favorites was the start of his undoing. That loss started spiraled UH to purgatory. He had the JJ mentality of letting the players be responsible on their own. College football players are still kids and sometimes their brains haven’t fully matured yet and need to be herded sometimes.
#94 – Can I get 95?! 95?! Lookin’ for a hundred can I get 95?!
Thank you 95!!! 96… lookin’ for a hundred, who’ll give me 97?!
99?! al, you got a hndred?!
Howzit Tsaikos!

happy new year to all tsaikos! wanted to post to get the blog to 100+.
SOLD!!! To UH fan for life!!!
I like the topic of the post, but the next time we do hypotheticals, could we choose another name besides Fred? Reminds me too much of Von Appen.
Fred Flintstone, Fred Biletnikoff, Fred Lynn .
Fred dy Fender
Wow. Over 100 is great. In 2018, I look forward to renewing my season tickets, a complete coaching staff with enough pay to retain assistants for at least a few years, exciting football, and a return to a bowl game.
New post coming soon. ST tweeted something.
werd.
Navy. 9/1 246 days…..
O, did you see what they did to UVA. Defense? Calling for DEFENSE….
Cory Batoon is the new DC.
http://hawaiiathletics.com/news/2017/12/29/football-corey-batoon-named-new-defensive-coordinator.aspx
106: Yup, just saw it on another account. Interesting …
Baton has an extensive coaching resume. Eager to see him implement his defensive schemes. Coach Yoro likely to move to coaching the LBs? Should be interesting to see who the new D-line coach will be.
#8 Rumors prove to be true. Wonder how this turns out, apparently he was forced out of a on-field coaching position while at Ole Miss.
FAU’s *** special teams coordinator *** and *
co-defensive coordinator* Corey Batoon has accepted
the position as the University of Hawai’i’s
new defensive coordinator.
Yup, sure hope Corey can run the ST too.
Glad I checked the post before leaving work for the day. Sounds like a good hire.
If they’re shuffling the coaching assignments, I wonder if Stutz moves to coach WR since Hinson moved on? Then they find a new QB coach? I wonder if Morrison would consider coming back? What is he doing these days? And I’m sorry, but Smith needs to be shuffled out of the OC job.
Corey Batoon named DC.
http://hawaiiathletics.com/news/2017/12/29/football-corey-batoon-named-new-defensive-coordinator.aspx
If not Cavanaugh, is Derby a viable o-line option?
Batoon has good results from his safeties—-
which UH needs desparately.
His defense will be a Platoon of Hope.
Attention! Right Face! Left Face!
Double time, Ho! Attack!
But I fear Boise spies reading this blog
and will try to hire him away in the
coming weeks. Hope Batoon is not a
hot air balloon deal…
Don’t leave the pie on the window ledge…
Corey Batoon will begin working at UH next week.
He was one 10 candidates.
ST column in SA.
He was one of 10 candidates.
Welcome home Coach Batoon
Hope you can bring some SEC recruits
with you (Florida area talent ie st jueste)
111. Thanks barack for remembering the rumor . Maddog was the only one who initially took it seriously .
According to USA Today, this was Corey’s salary.
708 Florida Atlantic C-USA Corey Batoon $120,000.
UH was paying Legi $200K, per OSD. Let’s see what Corey gets.
Nice get in Coach Batoon. Love to see Hawai’i guys back at UH! That’s one piece of the puzzle in place! I remember him from his playing days here!
Island man I do my homework like you do. BTW USU blew the game today and Northwestern had two huge bad calls that nearly delivered Kentucky a win-GoWarriors!!!
A radio commentator on USC-Ohio State game said
USC lost a recruit (player?) from Texas because he
did not like In n Out Burgers but preferred his home
state Texas Whataburgers 400 times more…
Note: FAU’s current Assistant Coach salary pool is $1,260,000 and UH’s is around $1,200,000.
But the HC Kiffin gets around $1 million. Nick will get $425,004 in 2018, i think.
