Game Day: San Diego State

When it comes to the Hawaii-San Diego State football rivalry, there are three things that come to mind:

> Last year’s 55-0 shellacking in San Diego, the first time Nick Rolovich absorbed a shutout as a coach or player.

> The Aztecs’ 14 conference victories in a row in this series.

> Running back Marshall Faulk, who rushed for 212 yards in 1991, 300 and four touchdowns in 1992, and 175 in 1993.

Honorable mention would be Az Hakim catching a pass, pulling a hamstring and then hobbling away to complete a 40-yard scoring play.

There are three things for UH hopefuls to consider:

> Last year’s game was played in San Diego, where the Warriors have never done well. In the past five meetings in San Diego, the Aztecs’ average winning margin was 36.6 points; in the past two meetings at Halawa, the average margin was 10.5 points. Today’s nationally televised game is at Aloha Stadium.

> While the Aztecs have dominated the conference matchups, the Warriors won two non-conference meetings, in 2005 and 2002, at Aloha Stadium. In the 2005 game, Nate Ilaoa rushed for 151 yards and Colt Brennan tossed five touchdown passes. Led by Garrett Gabriel, the Warriors beat the Aztecs in back-to-back years in the late 1980s.

> Faulk is 44 years old and unlikely to return for his senior year to play in today’s game. Likewise, Donnel Pumphrey (averaged 146 rushing yards in three games against UH), Adam Muema (166 yards and game-winning TD in OT in 2013) and George Jones (164 yards in 1995) also won’t be suiting up.

But here’s why UH fans should be concerned:

> Rashaad Penny has been in a recent slump — 122 combined yards in the past two games — but he’s a load (5-11, 220 pounds), fast (4.5 in the 40), and explosive (15 rushes of 20-plus yards). He also rushed for 175 against Stanford.

> Boise State and Fresno State took advantage of a beat-up offensive line to bracket Penny and harass quarterback Christian Chapman. But if the Aztecs can block and protect — they expect to start two freshmen on the line today — that should open lanes for Penny and set up Chapman’s play-action passes. Chapman has a strong and accurate arm, which is aided when he lures defenses after taking snaps under center and fakes handoffs to Penny. Chapman also is a decent scrambler.

> Head coach Rocky Long has mastered the 3-3-5 defense that is now in vogue in college football. (The Warriors have a version as a sub-package.) The scheme relies on quickness and athleticism. The Aztecs have both.

Please share your thoughts.

Has it been that long since the last win against SDSU? 14 wins in a row? This reminds me of a quote by a former tennis player.

“And let that be a lesson to you all. Nobody beats Vitas Gerulaitis 17 times in a row.”[8]

    – after defeating Jimmy Connors.

    ——————————-
For UH, replace 17 with 15. Could this be the year? We’ll find out tonight.

I hope Hawaii defense can keep San Diego St away from the middle of the field.

San Diego St is going into the game angry with something to prove. If Hawaii doesn’t match intensity for intensity with San Diego St, it could be a long, long night.

I hope the bye week helped the team refocus on playing with purpose. As a Hawaii fan, I say 42 – 35 win for Hawaii. But, I could see it going 10 – 56 in favor of San Diego St. 14 wins in a row for the Aztec’s is no fluke.

Getting ready for the game. Go Bows, Warriors, or Rainbow Warriors!

  5. winning October 28, 2017 10:32 am

To quote Rocky Long……” Coaches can lose a game for you by not giving the players a proper chance to play well, by giving them a lousy scheme compare to who they are playing against.” Well, does that ring a bell? Hint: Its not the offense. If todays schemes are the same or similar what’s been run look out. Demotions will be due San Diego State 56 Hawaii 28. (I hope not)

  6. H-Man October 28, 2017 10:47 am

Just like when BYU had their streak against Hawaii. BYU came to Aloha Stadium with Heisman Trophy winner, Ty Detmer, highly favored, but went home with a loss. So it’s Hawaii’s turn to break this losing streak and upset the Aztecs. Go Warriors !!!

  7. Buffoman October 28, 2017 11:24 am

Defenses will determine the outcome. If we cannot make them punt on a fairly regular basis but they make us punt a lot, I believe it will not be pretty.

  8. Honu888 October 28, 2017 11:30 am

This will be an ugly game for the Home Team. Like CSU and UCLA it won’t be close. BUT hope I’m wrong! I will still be at the game tonight cheering the Warriors on!

  11. H-Man October 28, 2017 1:30 pm

SteveM. Let’s keep the faith. Ohio St came from behind today to beat Penn St behind QB JT Barrett’s 16 consecutive pass completions and 3 TDs in the 4th to win 39-38. Hawaii is no Ohio St, but who knows, Dru might have a career night.

IMHO, we need to stop the run first….SDSU got great athletes and we can’t be giving them second chances. O needs to start fast…let the juice flow from first snap.

  23. z October 28, 2017 6:09 pm

    Guud bye….

  32. islandman October 28, 2017 8:54 pm

Offense was the big problem in this game. The defense did okay. You can’t win many games scoring only 7 pts. or even 21 pts.

  33. islandman October 28, 2017 9:54 pm

UC Davis scored 17 pts vs SDSU, we could only manage 7.

  34. Kev-1 October 28, 2017 10:06 pm

It’s time for Rolo to make some coaching decisions. I question a lot of what is going on with playing time for some offensive players. Timoteo, Stubblefield, Ewaliko all MIA. And special teams doesn’t count.

Play calling is bad. Offense lacks excitement. QB not D1 caliber.

  35. Kev-1 October 28, 2017 10:09 pm

And every week Rolo says “Tuiasoa should probably getting more looks.” But, nope. Even on a night when 22 was shut down.

What’s it gonna take to see another QB get some playing time too?

If you can’t see that the offense, especially the play calling, is limited by what our starter can and can’t do, then you’re blind.

  36. H-Man October 28, 2017 10:09 pm

Yup, me too I can’t see Hawaii winning another game this season with this coaching staff. This game was by far, the worse offensive coaching performance I recall witnessing….ever.

  37. 808bowler October 28, 2017 10:11 pm

Eek think with this offense mcdonald is a better fit the brown.

  38. islandman October 28, 2017 10:24 pm

June J. would have replaced the QB in this game, i think.

  39. What? October 28, 2017 10:25 pm

The defense did ok today. But, the offense was nonexistent. After leaving the game tonight, I heard someone mention on the post game talk show with Gary Dickman the state legislature needs to give more money to Hawaii football. Some say the coach needs to go.

The UH football program works within the budget given to them. Rolo isn’t going anywhere. With less money, it takes longer to turn around a program. There are exceptions. JJ was an exception. UH has the athletes to win. The problem is San Diego State and a lot of other teams in the mwc has more.

The losing streak to San Diego St is 15 and counting.
    ———————–
On a different topic, I can see why I stayed away from Aloha Sradium on Saturdays. The stadium is not conducive to a family environment. The stadium experience is horrible. We got two more home games this year. I went to all the home games. Next year, no more. I will go back to PPV with relatives and friends and we all share in the cost. At least watching the games on PPV I don’t have to hear drunk loud SOB’S where swearing is a natural ocurrence.

I tried going to the games this year. No mas!

  40. not Sean October 28, 2017 10:41 pm

There was a large group of kids in white filling sections D and E, blue and orange levels. Several hundred, maybe more. They brought the spirit and energy to the game and made it interesting and fun. Cheering, cheering and cheering. Oozing positive energy throughout the whole game. Too bad it didn’t infect the team. After the game, I asked one of the chaperones who they were. Boys and Girls Cub of Hawaii and all their tickets were bought by Marcus Mariota. WHAT A GUY!!! He is a shining example for all with the means of how to give back to their communities. How to make their home place a better place and their home people better people. WHAT A GUY THAT MARCUS IS!!! It’s a shame that was the high point of the game for me.

I have nothing positive to contribute other than that. They had two weeks to prepare for this game. Two weeks to prepare…not two weeks break. Maybe that wasn’t a fair comment, but whatever. That’s how I feel. I know the players feel worse. I just hope the coaches do, too.

  41. H-Man October 28, 2017 10:50 pm

I’ll still go to games, but probably won’t renew my season tickets. Pick a couple games that maybe Hawaii will have a chance. Let’s see, next season there’s Duquesne on Sept 22. So maybe I’ll attend one game.

These are the times Hawaii AD Matlin might be wishing he hired (The experienced proven Head Coach that knows how to turn around losing programs) June Jones instead of (The young sexy hired with no head coaching experience (Chow also had no head coaching experience) Rolo). Matlin should have hired June Jones and encourage June to hire Rolo as the coach in waiting and groom him up. I’m not saying fire Rolo, but if the run, run, run, punt offense continues maybe Hawaii can draw Jone Junes from the CFL and keep Rolo as his head assistant coach in waiting.

  45. Kamehameha#1 October 29, 2017 5:20 am

Dru Brown missing too many throws! When are the other guys going to get chances to play? He doesn’t look comfortable in the pocket anymore, why not try somebody else, its not like he earned the right to be the trigger man anyways.

  46. Kamehameha#1 October 29, 2017 5:31 am

Now you see why Hawaii kids don’t go to UH. What the heck is his problem not playing the Hawaii kids. I seen those kids played before and they can play heck of a lot better than those other guys. Timoteo and Stubblefield will catch anything that come their way cause thats Hawaii’s own home grown boys. Rolo has to go! He doesn’t understand the local kids and their mentality. Best bet, get June back or get rid of the AD too. And this is why Milton turned down UH, now look where he is now?

  47. cappie the dog October 29, 2017 5:57 am

When I was a child in Kaimuki, my mother wanted my father and I to go house-hunting. This was 1987, probably the last time homes were affordable. But jacka***** that we were, my father and I insisted on watching Hawaii/SDSU. I think the final score was 35-5.

Stuck in Leeward traffic, en route to Kalani, I made the mistake of complaining.

    “Didn’t you check Aina Haina?”

She got off the freeway and dropped me off in front of the Kalihi post office.

  48. What? October 29, 2017 6:10 am

What I was thinking also as I was going home from the game last night was the team had two weeks to prepare for this game. Two weeks of preparation and all they got to show for it is 7 points.

This is the first game that I felt like we were in the Chow era of run, run, pass, punt. The coaches job is to place players in position to make plays. There were a lot of plays where the pass plays were well short of the first downs. While on the defensive side, the Aztecs just bounced outside and let the speed of Penny take over. I think if they ran student body right and student body left all game, they would have been ok. In the open, no one on UH has the speed to catch Penny. Speed kills. The Aztecs have them and UH don’t.

But, 7 points? They could have scored 7 points even with no practice time. There is nothing that can be done about HC change. There is no money. With the product on the field plus PPV, and in addition tonight’s game was in espn 2, that is why there were only 17K + fans at the stadium. Also, the stadium experience is horrible. I went to the first four home games. There are two more left and then aloha means goodbye. It’s back to PPV.

  49. What? October 29, 2017 6:52 am

There are a lot of people who will be calling for change in coaches. Also, there will be even more who say now is the time to donate money to UH. I guess there will be a sweet bread pus to get the funding. To some I say, keep your money. Spend what you have and save the rest. Don’t feel at all responsible that we need to be the financial support of this team.

This year I had the money to buy season tickets. But, if the product is horrible, why keep buying? Businesses that fail to make make money eventually go out of business. If UH athletic’s is treated like a business, then either their business model is not working or their product is not worth buying.

I know if UH football goes under, then so does all the other UH athletic programs. NCAA football is like “keeping up with the Joneses.” Forget all logic, just make sure we’re better than the neighbors. Eventually, it will be like living on credit. I heard someone say create a line item tax for football. Are you kidding? I like football. But, I am not willing to pay a tax just to help football. If that business model fails, it fails.

Several years ago, I saw an article on this blog someone attached an article about a college that gave up football and used their football field as crop that and used them to sell at stores and restaurants. If it’s gets too expensive for the school and state to run a division 1 program, move to division 2. Or, do what that school did, make the stadium into a crop field and sell it to stores and restaurants.

Eventually the diehard fans will be no more and what you will have is as someone on this blog termed, “millennial’s who don’t care about sports.” To some it may be unthinkable now. But, it could happen. There are a lot of schools that did away with football and still remained a good school.

  50. Inyoface October 29, 2017 7:01 am

Hawaii has not scored over 7 points in the first quarter this year, most were scoreless.

  51. azwarrior22 October 29, 2017 7:17 am

    Something has to change…

    Offense is not executing.

    Defense is not executing.

Rolo needs to look hard at changing both coordinators and changing QB. Next man up if he can’t execute.

I was looking forward to the UNLV game but now I’m not so sure UH is good enough. Sure they’ll probably hang but do that have enough to take it over the top and win. UH can’t even hold home court even with a bye; now they go on the road again.

I hurried back to watch the game on national tv, only to find they were down by 3 TDs, which just tuned me out.

Standing pat is not the answer…Rolo needs to take a hard look and maybe make some tough decisions on who can play.

  52. Kev-1 October 29, 2017 7:29 am

And don’t forget … the only reason UH scored 7 last night was because of SDSU penalties on that drive.

  53. Kev-1 October 29, 2017 7:30 am

You can’t blame the defense. They were on the field the entire game.

  54. islandman October 29, 2017 7:48 am

” San Diego State’s 334 rushing yards, were the most by a UH opponent this year.
UH was held to season lows in total offense (195), rushing yards (35) and first downs (12).
The 195 yards of total offense is the lowest in 22 games under head coach Nick Rolovich. ‘ ( UH post-game notes)
    ——————————————————————————————-
However, Rolo said there were less penalties and less or no turnovers by UH. But 7 pts was the least points scored vs SDSU this season. UC Davis scored 17 and UNLV 10.

  55. Akamai Okole October 29, 2017 8:00 am

    Great Morning All!

I’m departing from my one-liner routine this morning because I seem to have found my soap-box…

There is a rising tide of sentiment of discontent for the coaching staff: the Coordinators and the HC in particular.

I am not very familiar with the DC other than watching his product since he arrived here to coach the DLine. Mixed results in both positions.

I have seen the career of the passing game coordinator/QB Coach up close through the years; have followed the run game coordinator/OC and the HC since their playing days for Hawaii and their coaching careers since then.

Lots of comments are being made for the removal of these gentlemen mainly because of a lack of creativity in the play-calling and lack of ingenuity in game-planning that is leading to the paucity of results recently.

    What?

If those three were still on the field with some of their contemporaries there may be reason to make a case for that argument but given the state of the “cupboard” they are working with I am tending to give them a great big “PASS” (no pun intended)

DId not all of them play for JJ-inspired or coached offenses in college and/or high school? Did not one of them expand that offense to a record-setting “Spread and Shred” offense? Did not one of them lead another offense to conference-leading offensive numbers? Did not one of them throw for over 1500 yards of passing over a 3-game stretch before exiting the Halawa locker room for the last time as a player?

Do you think the 3 of them have forgotten how to coach a Choice route? Or do you really believe the last regime left a group that was able to collectively put 3 players (much less 8 or 9, if you count the guys to block) on the field at the same time who could run it at the D1 level?

As a new coach you can use some smoke and mirrors to squeeze out a few wins but once the conference gets a season of film (tape, Hudl or whatever they using nowadays) on you, you need talent to compete. That’s what season 3 is about.

I won’t hold this coaching staff responsible for having their hands tied by the shortcomings in talent left to them by the previous group. (And believe me, it was bleak!)

Give up your season tickets if you like. I enjoy the extra space in the parking lot and the clean porta-potties…
    😈

    (putting away soap box)

    Das it

  56. What? October 29, 2017 8:02 am

I think the winner of guess the score is the person who guessed 3 points. If UH had made that field goal and if UH wasn’t aided by all those penalties against SDSU, UH would not have scored that TD. They would have scored only 3 points.

Watching the game last night, it really did feel like Chow football. In fact, I had to look through my binoculars across the field to make sure Chow wasn’t on the UH sidelines. QB play is limited. DB is a step above Ikaika Woolsey and that’s it. Rolo needs to keep searching for another QB.

  57. What? October 29, 2017 8:08 am

Typical attitude from Akamai okole. Keep dreaming for that 56-14 game as you usually do. Go and help sell sweet bread to fund the program. I go to the game if I want and don’t go if I don’t. The smell is coming from your 56-14 wishes. Get real!

  58. What? October 29, 2017 8:22 am

They rely on DSJ so heavy, where’s Ryan at?!!!

  61. shadow October 29, 2017 8:27 am

Suggest Coach Rolo & offensive staff spend time with Coach Frost & Central Florida (UCF) this offseason.

Can learn a thing or 2 & more about how to game plan, attack weaknesses, & not being so vanilla.

The UCF offense is superb w/ their QB (aka Milton from Mililani). They are fun to watch (& I mean UCF not UH)!

  62. Whats up October 29, 2017 8:28 am

Lack of swag, the last team to have swag was the June Jones recruits Kealoha Pilares, Greg Sales 2010 “HAWAII WARRIOR” team. Ever since this team has been through the wringer with over paid Mack getting lucky riding June Jones coat tail and the nail in the coffin Chow and Ben Jay idiotic nostalgic name Football change back to the Rainbows.

As much as I would like to believe it was only Chow Football Head Coaching schemes and play calling messed up Hawaii Football swag, talent and Attitude. I have to think the name change did have a negative effect the recruiting, swag and attitude. We can change the coaches all we want but these young men are not playing with stone cold swag like Hawaii Warriors. But rather soft like Rainbow Warriors.

Rolo needs to get the name changed back to Hawaii Warriors and take that to sell to future talent on the recruiting trail. Rolo also should look at his coaching staff and l figure out which of his (buddies) needs to be demoted or replaced. You know if June Jones was back the first thing he would do is get the team name changed back to Warriors for recruiting and swag purposes.

I’m not saying that things are not going to get better in the future and some of you will be hard headed and will shrug off what I’m saying. However, for all those that had that nostalgic Rainbow tickle in your testicles, I hope your happy with whats been displayed on the field since the Football name change back to Rainbows. Chow is fired and still this team hasn’t played with consistent swag since we were Warriors.

  63. oneseason October 29, 2017 9:55 am

#53 … Akamai okole .. that makes sense. The Rainbow Warrior total offense was producing big yardage even in MWC losses (610 vs CSU, 477 vs Nevada, 450 vs Wyoming). To me, producing only 195 total offense vs SDSU points to something other than offensive play calling. The association between the loss of key players (Ursua (receiving) & Tuiasoa (rushing)), and rushing yardage dropping to 48 vs SDSU seems like a good thing to consider (153 vs CSU, 281 vs Nevada, 201 vs Wyoming).

The offensive line is now a shadow of itself as injuries/Naeole’s departure start taking a toll. Hensley and Wa’a, probably the team’s best lineman this season, both left last night’s game.

It’s scary to think that Vegas oddsmakers were spot-on when the preseason over/under for Hawaii wins was 4. Who would have thunk it?

Holding San Diego State to only 28 points is awesome.

The offense reminded me of the days with running back great Gary Allen. Gary Allen up the middle for 3 yards. Garry Allen left for 3 yards, Gary Allen right for 3 yards. Punt.

UH was a little more balanced–run for 3 yards and pass for 4 yards on third-and-7. Punt.

I was cheering for DSJ but it was very disappointing the coaches did not recognize the superstar running back 3-yard syndrome and change it up more. I think the coaches know their stuff–they just need to recognize that continually throwing money into a slot machine hoping it will hit big is not a great plan… and now we’re off to Las Vegas…

morning started out with brilliant sunshine, then the dark clouds rolled in with constant rain

reminded me of me when preseason started with a 9 win 3 losses prediction — from there it slowly went down hill and then it hit the “rapids” and the gushing waters are taking its toll

i said that if UH lost last night, there will be NO post season bowl — as I cannot see them winning all the remaining games — people had high hopes of a win at UNLV, but that has changed when they beat Fresno at Fresno last night

“what will the day bring, I wonder”?

most disappointing part of last night’s game was up da middle 5 out of the first 7 offensive plays for UH and that gave them a total of 10 or 11 yards

I should have left at that time instead of sitting and watching what happened thereafter

it’s difficult to give the coaching staff more time with the offensive and defensive lack luster of last night’s game

glad a friend gave us tickets to the Wahine VB game for Saturday night.

I don’t think it’s time to give up on Rolo, but I definitely think it’s time for him to make some changes in key places. Play calling, OC, QB come to mind.

A-House — for the first time in many years, I left before the game ended. I admit I had to go bathroom, but didn’t think it worth returning to my seat to see if we could get two free tacos from Jack in the Box. 🙁
