UH starting lineup the same from the last few matchesKoelsch, Granato, Burns, Ionia, Castillo, Maglio, Kahakai
heard from UH radio guy. Says Mott is packed.
UH up 7-3. TO UH. 2 kills by Granato, 3 by Maglio
so far so good.
go bows!
Congrats to Kahakai, passes Tara Hittle for No. 4. Kahakai with 4 digs as Hawaii goes up 14-7
make that 15-8 on kill by Maglio
Only my second time watching on bigwesttv…last Fri while on mainland was the first. Definitely makes one appreciate the quality of the broadcast when it’s produced by HI!
Can’t get it to play on my tv, so gotta settle for laptop!
Ha, ha! And these replays make no sense!
4 service errors by Hawaii. Wahine lead 22-18. TO UH
the jump float is no good. always desires net.
UH led 24-20. Cal Poly has closed to 24-22. TO UH. wahine with 5 SEs
Aye yai yai. 5 Service errors already.
@PBNjz yea those replays are classic! Even when CalPoly gets a point they aren’t even showing the replay the the last point that got them there ha! Not sure if it’s my internet conneciton but the commentators are going in and out. Lets go bows! Gee wiz, just one more point we need!
UH ends it on its third swing at set point 25-23
connection for TV and radio has always been spotty up there
alright. time to do better.
lets go bows!
Maglio 6-0-17, Granato 4-0-8, Burns 3-0-5. Cal Poly leads in digs 21-19. That is in one set.
forget jump floats. just stand and serve.
My sound is spotty too. Running radio over tv browser for sound with video on laptop!
Let’s go ‘Bows!
Maglio blocked for her first hitting error, then she puts down her eighth and ninth kills to make it 12-10 Cal Poly.
Cal Poly up 18-13 TO UH
come on wahine. need some aces.
Vid just won’t start on iPad; didn’t have this issue on last away march on sidearm. Getting a fuzzy pic and ok sound on laptop tho.
Wanted to see Mags’ gesture on 18th point, so of course the replay is of a preceding point. D’oh.
Mishandled ball by T. Van Winden. UH closes to 22-19. TO Mustangs
Burns with a solo stuff makes it 23-21. A. Van Winden with kill. Poly at set point at 24-21. TO UH
Kills by Granato and Burns pull Hawaii to 24-23. TO Mustangs.
hitting error by Koelsch ends it 25-23.
Double hit on Poly. Home town call by ref.
no matter. need some more natural points aces including by way of nasty serve.
also need more aggression and more blocks.
go bows!
Maglio with just three kills in Set 2. 9-1-25. Granato 7-2-21, Bruins 5-0-8, Castillo 5-1-15, Koelsch 4-2-14, Castillo 5-1-15
for Poly
A Van Winden 7-1-20, Greisen -1-19, Niemen 6-0-9, T. Van Winden 3-4-22.
both teams with 40 digs
Undoubtedly concerned for his safety. Poly fans are being total foul mouthed jerks.
26,believe it’s Rich Olson as the up ref.
I’ve already been sworn at by some of their students.
30. And he is who Cindy?
Too many homer ref calls. Also sounds like the crowd has become rowdy, like at LBSU.
32. respected ref, not hometown.
then if you are being harassed go complain to security. there are Big West regulations in place to handle that.
Security is nonexistent. One county sheriff deputy who’s spending most of his time chatting with the fans.
Definitely bandwagon fans…don’t have half the volleyball IQ of Hawaii fans.
updating T25
4) Florida def. South Carolina 25-17, 25-16, 25-17
6) Kentucky def. LSU 12-25, 18-25, 25-19, 25-18, 15-11
7) Nebraska def. Michigan State 25-16, 19-25, 25-17, 25-14
10) Michigan State lost to Nebraska 16-25, 25-19, 17-25, 14-25
16) Creighton def. Providence 25-19, 20-25, 25-15, 25-20
17) Purdue def. Ohio State 25-16, 25-17, 25-22
21) Wichita State def. UCF 23-25, 25-14, 17-25, 25-15, 15-10
36. it’s their fifth home match of the season, averaging about 1300. this was hyped as a huge match. and they showed up.
No fans have the VB IQ that Hawaii does. Nebraska is close but just like at UH, it’s community support. What you’re seeing are students.
Burns blocked for her first error. It’s 10-6. TO UH.
Another error by Granato and it’s 17-11. TO UH
Ace by Granato and Hawaii pulls to 19-16. TO Mustangs
yes! wahine time to charge!
lets go bows!
3 kills by Maglio and it’s 21-all. TO Poly
(wahine) has some gumption – cal poly announcer
Unbelievable. Mags carried the team to win set 3. Go Wahine !!!
Maglio with 21 kills. career high. had 6 kills in the final 7 points. UH wins 25-23
wahine increasing the heat!
go bows!
kendra seems to be increasing her heat. some serves by wahine forcing bad passes
Great comeback by the Rainbow Wahine! As a Cal Poly alumnae I admit that some Cal Poly fans behavior is atrocious. I never approved fans on any side getting nasty whether Cal Poly or Hawaii. At one time I called out against a Hawaii student who was atrocious and I was glad that security silenced him. Hawaii can get revenge not only against the Cal Poly team but even more so against the rude fans. I would go so far to say that it would serve them right.
Greisen with the kill. Cal Poly leads 15-12 at the TTO.
49. Thanks for your support. I’m at this game and I’m really getting heckled by these little brats.
OMG. I can’t believe that call.
52. seriously!
Cal Poly up 19-15. TO UH
Mustangs pull away at 22-16. TO UH
Why aren’t there 4 line judges?
Why no TV replay?
The Big West should have both and any excuse to suggest otherwise is a disservice to the game.
Mustangs win 25-18. on to Set 5
I agree with #56.
Also, at least twice the announcer has misidentified the outcome of a point and covered for that by saying the refs reversed the call. Except that you can see the original, unchanged call just by watching the call. Problematic for the appearance of quality.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but even if UH wins in 5, SLO still wins the conf unless someone else beats them, right?
Cal poly up 6-4. TO UH
come on norene, lets see that nasty serve of yours!
OMG…this game is being thrown by the homer refs…
alright wahine, time to charge and finish!
lets go bows!
Maglio and Ionia block Greisen UH ties it at 12. TO Poly
Granato hits wide. 17-15 Mustangs.
With Poly back pedaling and Hawaii leading 13 – 12, Guinasso serves long. She just lost the match for Hawaii.
Wow did they pull a pull the Cal Poly mascot to do the play by play for the Big West Feed?
66. Yeah that really killed it. Of course you never know what would have happened but 14-12 really puts pressure on them
I got to see the ending of set 4 and all of set 5. A lot of the serves seemed to be at Cal Poly’s libero –
why? Three service errors in set 5 too. It just was not meant to be.
Ugh just ugh wahine had their chances
No ncaa tourmanent this year totally unaccaptable. We needed mags in all the time and it showed at the end of set five.
And just like that, no post season for Hawaii.
Just want to get out of this stinking town.
Need a few more Kristen Smarts.
Gotta shake this off. Disappointing, but they need to focus on UCSB tomorrow. UCSB had the Big West day off today on “Hawaii weekend.” I don’t think the challenge is really physical because the Wahine are great condition – it’s the mental toll of playing two days in a row while the opponent does not.
Oh well hopefully the warriors and wahine beach team can make up for this lackluster wahine season by both winning national championships in the spring.
Re. Seriously? No need for that
49. I’m sorry you were getting heckled by the brats and I also feel sorry for Guinasso who missed her serve and McKenna Granato for hitting wide,
As for the match itself, the Rainbow Wahines can be proud that they took the Mustangs to the ultimate limit and never gave up.
As for the Mustangs, since they lost so many years, they wanted that second win real bad. No one can be conference champion forever. Penn State and Stanford who have won more national championships more than anyone else, yet neither can be perennial conference champions. The pendulum swings and former year losers get hungrier each year.
I can definitely empathize with both sides here, as I rooted for each team at alternate times.
Take no prisoners.
#66…it’s a team sport, so no one person is responsible for a loss. It does feel sad that for the first time since i became an instant die-hard fan in Aug ’95, they won’t be going to post-season. And i also can’t remember the last time they weren’t conf champs. Still such an awesome group of seniors we’re losing this year. Always and forever, Let’s Go Bows!
75. Until I read your message I sympathized with you, but now not. The van Winden parents home in Napa did NOT burn down. Cindy, you should delete that message. It was uncalled for!
#75 – C’mon, that’s not cool.
thanks. was busy writing a breaking news story. did not see that until now.
Deleted and very uncool.
Anyway there’s still a slight chance the ncaa commitee will throw the wahine a bone and let them into the tournamenr if the wahine win out but since when does the ncaa committee do a nice thing for the wahine?? I will be shocked but happy for the seniors,
Coach Robyn needs to bring in some hammers at the pins to ensure cal poly only wins the big west this year!!
Despite the loss, Wahines played with a lot of heart. Yeah, we’re all bummed that post season is wishful thinking at this point but hats off to the Mustangs who played with determination. We’ve had the crown for years and know it had to end. Next year we start all over with incoming talent and hope there are terminators as Maglio will be sorely missed.
4) Florida def. South Carolina 25-17, 25-16, 25-17
6) Kentucky def. LSU 12-25, 18-25, 25-19, 25-18, 15-11
7) Nebraska def. 10) Michigan State 25-16, 19-25, 25-17, 25-14
12) Utah lost to Oregon State 25-16, 16-25, 20-25, 20-25
16) Creighton def. Providence 25-19, 20-25, 25-15, 25-20
17) Purdue def. Ohio State 25-16, 25-17, 25-22
18) San Diego def. 8) BYU 25-21, 23-25, 25-22, 25-16
21) Wichita State def. UCF 23-25, 25-14, 17-25, 25-15, 15-10
25) Northern Iowa lost to Illinois State 25-22, 21-25, 18-25, 25-21, 12-15
81…. In 2014, Hawaii was not the conference champ. LBSU was at 16-0.
UH was 13-3 , 22-7 overall and lost to LBSU two times in 5 sets and CSUN once in 3 sets.
First off , Poly players are good and this is a very good team (think Wahine could be better , but too many breakdowns) , but my biggest gripe would be that the officiating is/was atrocious , at best, and do not think the match would have reached the 5th set , if the calls were fair!!!! Could not download streaming (otherwise — would have sent disc to NCAA for review –of officiating). Season not over yet , but not very hopeful for at-large berth. Wahine and coaching staff , need to broaden their line-up and entire game , to keep up with rest of colleges. Heard a lot of talk about opening up offense—but , did not really see it! GO BOWS
I really hate this “Hawaii weekend” stupidness being imposed on us by the conference. It’s bad enough that we pay travel subsidies to all of these schools that fly to Hawaii only once per season while we have to fly across the ocean on every road trip. Then on top of that the scheduling is set up to intentionally favor our opponents?? It’s unconscionable and if the conference office won’t change it then Matlin should escalate the issue to Lassner to bring up with the other Big West presidents.
No. 80, i mean.
Great match. Congrats to Mustangs! They have a 4 year program and it payed off – especially with the transfer of the younger VW sisters. Loved how our girls played and fought! Thank you coaches and staff for putting your hearts and souls into the team – it showed in how they played. Was so proud of how the team played.
MB Neiman and Greisen were too strong and seems Poly doesn’t make too many errors.
83 Agree. very unfair to Hawaii. been that way for a couple of years.
sorry if the numbers have been messed up. deleted some uncalled-for comments.
we’ll see about the postseason. they cannot afford to lose another match.
unfortunately the RPI doesn’t take into account what Pablo does in terms of set scores, and other things that would make sense when looking at teams.
#93, if BWC members admitted UCSD, then we’d have an even number of teams and a travel partner each weekend so that everyone will play two matches. However, the scuttlebutt is that the Cal State schools want CSU Bakersfield in. Personally, I think UCSD, which has been upgrading its athletics, would be a fine BWC member and bring with it some academic luster or panache to the conference. But that’s just my opinion.
So Frings wishes drought to hit grape production in San Luis Obispo and Napa counties just because Cal Poly won a very close match. Maybe drought might hit, but it won’t have anything to do with volleyball.
Ridiculous comment to say the least. I leave it up to you Cindy if you want to delete that comment as well as my reaction here and just stick to volleyball.
94. missed that one. thanks. it’s been deleted.
also edited part of your comment since it didn’t have anything to do with volleyball, As you said.
Re: up ref
it was Rich Olmstead up. Think I said Rich Olson. i didn’t see the whole match but have always found him to be one of the better refs.
Its been a heartbreaking year- 5-set losses to BYU, UCLA and 2 to Poly in particular. If no squeaker win over Baylor, there would be no feel good wins at all this season.
I know its like ‘beneath’ what we are used to… but the NIVT “next 64” (it is really a go?) has to be a consolation. Possible additional home games and …really I would think UH would be one of the favorites to win it all.
no thanks to that next 64 tournament.
ncaa tournament or bust, if they don’t make it, call it a season and prepare to rise like the phoenix in 2018. Sky and Sophia need to improve a lot. Casey also, she is always early on her attempts.
and Coach Robyn needs to bring in a hammer at the right and a top notch libero.
66 and 68. i saw that land in on video and thought it was an ace. more like more of the officiating couldnt officiate. just awful refs. can say baby g lost the match.
wahine fought hard and never wavered but cal poly especially with neimen and the vw sisters were just too much for them to handle. blocks and digging were touching balls but thats about it to it. wahine went toe to toe and just didnt play better except having to chase from behind like in set 3.
^cant* say baby g lost the match
if there is really anyone to blame, i would blame the refs. i have watched my share of bad refs but tonight’s ones were god awful. the upper ref, well he seemed like he didn’t know what the hell he was doing and seemed very temperamental and aggressive when making calls. idk, well let’s hope they can get in the tournament…if not than, oh well. it’s a learning experience for many of us
Don’t think they’d consider the NIVT but you never know.
in 92 there was a version of it and Hawaii turned it down.
Yes Baby G didn’t lose the match. Let me start off is if we are going to allow players to stay in for 6 rotations , number , they better pass consistently well. I don’t what everyone was watching but the last 2 year or so, we have had the poorest passing in the backrow. No not our Libero”s but people we entrust back there all season to so many thanks and mishandled balls. Like I said all season, this season we should have rode Maglios more often. She was clearly our #1 Terminator and not our OH’s. All our OH’s were contributors but IMO not good enough to ride their backs when it counted. Next year will be the same unless we make significant changes or RECRUIT some all-around athletic OH’s
If MKG wants to be an All American with the lack of height then I suggest she hit the weight room, plyometric, and lots of sand work. She has the power to Terminate but can she hit open spots more consistently than straight to the opponents which most opponents shown diggable (if that’s a word) Casey as well as Sibley need to work extra extra hard to elevate their game. I often check the lower leg muscle tone which equates to how hard they have worked off season.
Why I say that is because I know! Regardless, this year has been a great fight they are giving and every year I can’t wait til next season starts After this season., I pray that each girl bust their behinds so we don’t have to break the record next year for most played 5 games matches in 1 year. Lets get back to those good old days 3 sets Broom clean-ups..
agree about UCSD begin a better choice than Bakersfield. there’s been a push for Sac State, which would be an ideal travel partner for Davis. There is a bit of bickering between the UC and CSU schools. But we all remember when the WAC added teams like Rice for academic prestige. That was a Presidents’ decision.
The suggestion from one of the Big West coaches was that Davis and Hawaii should be travel partners. Had UCSD been admitted, perfect partner for UCI.
Hawaii has two bye weeks this season. Don’t understand why the Big West couldn’t have given Hawaii single matches during those weeks. OR why they wouldn’t give Hawaii Friday-Sunday matches at least at home.
So anyone watch the kam/kapolei semi match I heard Kevin Wont say something about a rumor about someone walking on to UH beach volleyball team? But i didnt catch who he was talking about.
95. If he’s one of the better refs then the remainder must be damn poor ones.
Meant kevin Wong^
Also from previous thread I find it incredibly hard to believe that coach Robyn hasn’t offered Oglivie yet, she is one of the most impressive players from the state right up there with Kanani and Kanoe. Would make a faboulous Oh2 or libero.
Damn, tough loss and this one will sting for a while. There were close calls for sure, and not having HD cams or being there, it was hard to say whether they got all of them right. During the match I admit i was blaming individual players, but now see that we could have played better overall and must learn to finish! But, give props to Cal Poly, its their year and I hope they do some damage in the tourney repping the BW.
Also, there’s no doubt we need a lot more firepower to compete with top25 teams, but we honestly did better than I was expecting. We had opportunities, but both hitting and serving errors costed us again. it seemed they had more serves in, but i’ll wait for the stats to confirm.
PS. I don’t think ive ever yelled so loud at my laptop before lol. Roomies came in several times asking what was going on after some out balls and service errors. I think I care too much? nah screw it, Wahine VB ride or die! haha
When Dave does the pre game and post game shows for OC sports when Ryan is away, we find things out. Namely Scott Wong had to really convince Dave to recruit Emily Maglio and Norene Iosia. He didn’t want either of these players, which make me question his recruiting in the latter years. I mean Castillo had 5 kills in 5 sets. That is one kill per set for a starter. McKenna is consistently inconsistent. I think there is too much emphasis on recruiting Punahou players. I mean Kupono Fey (before his senior year), Tai Manu Olevao, and Granato all came from Punahou. They were all inconsistent and they all had too much playing time. I think we all knew Granato was not going to be able to carry this team as it showed last year when Nikki was out at the beginning of the year. But if truth be told, if any of these Punahou players went away to the mainland schools, not sure if any of these players would have had playing time. There is something to be said for playing local.
Just to add on to previous post, yes, I know it is difficult for HI to recruit good players and Dave said that they only players that will play for HI are those that may have connections to HI but still, I don’t know the answer to all this. I know these current players are not cutting it. I feel for Maglio because she played her heart out and is not rewarded and will not be rewarded for it at the end of the year. Let’s hope the mens team is better.
just checked stats 12 uh service errors to 7 cal poly service errors
the officiating really was (using cal poly announcers word) botched
that 5th set was more of a clutch than i had realized end game
(lori)–think Dave recruited Punahou players because of their coach- ing and their drive (all present/passed Buff-n-Blues have shown that they can play the game)! May draw ire here , but have said from start of the season , that coaching staff are not playing/developing talent! Casey , Kalei , Natasha all have nagging injuries. Lose of Freitas , Smith — not playing Okino and Gong and going only with Anderson and Baby G on defense , was very bad moves (think using Faith was a very good move)!!! UH lost excellent talent in Lipscomp (still hope she will return) , Misraje, Light (6’2″ setter). Still have good OH coming in , but lost out on some “TERMINATORS”! Sibley , Howling and Skyler (and Natsha) need to be envolved (Howling played some OPP–should be used there — maybe regularly if other middles come through–SOPHIA the TERMINATOR)!! Ross needs playing time , and should sub for McKenna G and Casey (back row) cause I (?) them backrow and serving. And yes , all servers (except spin servers) maybe , should just stand and serve (better %). Really hope for the best for the whole TEAM–especially Emily(she really played her HEART out)!!! IF no post-season—next year ——– GO BOWS (thanks to Cindy)!!
Congrats to the Wahine for playing 5 consistent sets with no real breakdown….some unforced errors though and small things cost them.
Maglio was Magsnificent! She
played lights out!
Hope the team can pull it together
tonight after a disappointing loss. They’ll have to dig deep to beat a surging UCSB team.
This season isn’t over yet…
Is a return of service considered to count as a dig?
One more thing – on the last broadcast, Dave said all HI needs to do is stop the Van Winden sisters because CP doesn’t have a middle. Well, the middle killed HI last night. Ok I will stop now. I am so disappointed for Maglio. Too bad we don’t get her for another year because unless something changes, HI will look really bad next year (without Maglio).
116. Not only MB Nieman but OH Griesen killed us, 20 kills plus 5 blocks. So even if Torrey had 10 errors, 3 less than Granato, the others took over. And they weren’t supposed to be that good at blocking.
115. I looked it up, and a return of serve is not a dig. It’s service reception.
28 digs by Brouker seems to be really a lot of digs.
Kendra hit real good last night. Norene took about three swings like an outside hitter.
You could argue there are two DI divisions – the “mostly” recurring top 20 teams and then there is everyone else. Within that top 20, there are usually about 5 teams that stand to have a chance at the national championship.
Case in point- realistically, how many teams “outside” of the top 20 will actually beat any of the “so called” top 5 teams in the country on any given weekend? So, why not have a second DI division champion, comprised of those teams that choose to participate in a “second” tournament? In other words, teams could elect to go with the invite from the second DI tournament instead.
Obviously, this is just something pretty much off the cuff here, but realistically, how many teams just “hope”, pretty much year after year, that they will make it to the national championship?
The end result? Those two crowned national champs can have one playoff match, on New Years Day.
Wow. How did Maglio has so many attempts. Finally Hawaii is running the offense through her.
Not thrilled when Maafala setaone Iosia.
Lets be real, this team would struggle this year even if Shoji was still coaching.
Cindy, is it possible to instead of deleting comments (and subsequently changing the post numbers) would you be able to edit the post to say something like “deleted original comment due to vulgarity”?
DIG — A player passes the ball which has been attacked by the opposition. Digs are only given when players receive an attacked ball and it is kept in play. A BALL THAT HAS BEEN TOUCHED BY BLOCKERS AND THEN PLAYED BY THE DEFENSE IS A DIG.
I think the teams had the same strategy. Hawaii to S/D Torrey and Cal Poly to s/d Granato. Let the others try and beat them.
UCSB could be the ultimate trap game tonight. UH has a one-night turnaround after a grueling, heartbreaking 5 set loss on the road to eliminate them from the conference championship. Reminds me of waaay back when the 1981 football team lost a heartbreaker to BYU, then came out totally flat the next week and lost to lowly Pacific. Santa Barbara will be treating this like a “bowl game”. Up to the coaching staff to make sure they don’t come out futless – maybe rotate in Howling and Skye early for fresh legs and emotion.
This is the second time against Cal Poly this season the Wahine had the match in hand but failed to capitalize because of unforced errors.
Prior to last nights game, I mentioned two areas that would do them in; and that’s their serving and Granato’s play. Unfortunately, I was right.
MG hits the ball hard but not smart enough to overcome her early struggles and this has been her pattern throughout the season….if not for Maglio, this match would have ended in three.
Unfortunately, it’s very unlikely they will make it to post season play.
Maybe because we’re not in the “Thunderdome” that audio and video are so awful? Even the ESPN feed is barely intelligible.
1st set: Hawaii 23 UCSB 18
Hawaii takes the 1st set, 25 – 20
How is that you didn’t open a new post for the UCSB match? It started at 2 PM, not at 5 PM.
124, thanks for your comment. I had assumed today’s start time was 4 pm HST and would have missed it without your post. Jerky video and weird echoing audio.
They mentioned yesterday that there was a schedule change for today. Some sort of conflict with another event in the Thunderdome. I wonder how many people will make the drive to arrive late! I used to do the drive from Pasadena when I was still living in SoCal.
2nd set: Hawaii leading 8 – 7. TO Santa Barbara
UH up 15-12 in second.
Hawaii closes the 2nd set. 25 – 22.
125 – Thanks for the post informing us the UCSB game had started
Looks like Wahines loosing steam in Set 3. Could this possibly be yet another 5 setter?
http://www.hawaiiwarriorworld.com/?p=44948
sorry forgot to post the new link for Saturday
7-0 start by UH in fourth set, now trading serves. Good to see Greeley on the court.
