Marquette 3, No. 20 Hawaii 2
Team just entered the arena, warming up in grew sweats. Very Under Armor But they are still wearing Asics shoes
Ah Mow-Santos came out early, went over to see her husband and son who flew in from Las Vegas.

Looks like Burns not cleared. She is standing on the court but not participating in drills. Lipscomb not either. she was shagging.

These girls just have to fight hard, play smart and believe in themselves and I know they can do well this season.
Can someone lemme know when game on starts? Will stop watching the CSF – Drake game when that starts
From last thread, on paper, my two best teams are Poly and UH. Lots expected from the Van Winden sisters, and so far they are delivering. Dayton was a very good team last year.
2. i believe the pre-game show is on in about 7 min, and the game about 30-35 min thereafter
Drake owning set 4, 17-7
This is hard to watch. They are not even gonna get to double digits
Set 4 lost 25-9, their passing and confidence completely non-existent
For those not on Spectrum, try watching online on biggest website
Tonite’s prop bets:
Before the match against Marquette, will the singer of the National Anthem and Hawai’i Pono’i take longer than 2 minutes and 35 seconds to sing both songs (duration from the first word of the anthem to the last word of Pono’i)? (Note: ukulele players with no vocals, etc. will cancel this wager)
Will the player with the most kills during the season-opening match play for (a) Hawai’i or (b) Marquette?
Will Hawai’i have at least twice as many service errors as service aces (10 errors vs. 5 aces, for example) during the Marquette match?
Will there be problems with the free online stream of the UH/Marquette match (delayed start; buffering issues; lack of access for non-Hawaii residents, etc.)?
Stream is working on big west site, and quality is very good.
so…it begins.
no more shogi
it is robyns fire
i also under-stand hawai’i now possesses armor eh?
CSF lost set 5, 15-11
Can’t watch it, it’s not on Hawaiian Tel 😡 This sucks…
Singing took 2 min and 51 seconds

UH up 10-8. Marquette wins challenge when saying Iosia’s dig was down. it’s 9-9
Oh boy wahine needs Mags at the pins she needs to be on the floor at all times.
apologize think i said Howling, it’s Williams in the middle
Marquette up 15-12 at the TTO
Need a ds for castillo if shes gonna be on the outside IMO.
They just introduced Shoji.
20. No apology needed, you said Williams.
Anyone else think Williams’ block approach/technique is a little unorthodox?
Ace by Marquette and Eagles up 18-14. TO UH
Ball control not great why no Greeley in the backrow?
For all the time Robyn had the team spend in practice on fundamentals, their passing so far tonight has been awfully spotty.
27. You’re being generous. Lots of issues passing. But I like Williams’ youthful exuberance. Fun to watch the frosh. Very vocal.
Ross remains in for Castillo in front row. Williams in on a block. UH has pulled to 22-19. TO Marquette
Ok first positives williams has potential and crazy long arms and seems faster than Burns.
Hoping Mags moves to the right, love koelsh as a setter but as hitter just doesn’t have the arm. mags needs more than just four sets per game. Castillo is more effective in the middle.
Their timing seems off.
Williams in on another block. UH has tied it at 22. TO Marquette
Soon as i write that Koelsh comes up with big swing lol
Williams is gonna be something.
yes Mags needs more than four sets, but tell that to the passers
Kahakai aced. Marquette serving for set at 24-23. TO UH
kendra is a good receiver and is nimble
nice to have another spin server in mckenna ross
wahine playing sturdy but not rock solid. will need to be rock solid if they going to tangle with san diego and ucla
good to finally show that ‘under armor’ in blocking
She would get more sets as a pin hitter with the passing.
dissapointed in kahakai’s passing so far
Kahakai with the ace. UH wins 26-24
Lol kendra getting it done with dinks
Not sure that will work against the bruins though:/
hope savannah was livid she got aced and that would be a revenge ace
Nice gritty comeback…but sloppy, sloppy first set…
Whew, lucky to pull that out first set despite being aced four times.
Nice win for Irvine…
So Koelsch leading everyone in kills and hitting .250. Granato hitting zero. Williams with four blocks already? Kahakai underwhelming, per usual.
Castillo has now been replaced by Ross for set 2. Too bad, I was rooting for Casey, but she just doesn’t have the power or the passing right now.
Kahakai aced again.
Castillo is effective in the middle hope she moves there and Mags to the right not sure ross is the answer at left.
Need a steady OH. Too many unforced errors.
thank ross is too small on the outside. her errors coming when she’s trying to hit over the block and it goes long. Marquette up 7-2. TO UH
Kalei.
Just feed Mags.
Finally I get to watch a volleyball match live as I am visiting San Luis Obispo for the next two weekends.. If Hawaii continues to struggle in passing, Cal Poly SLO will beat them next month. I’ll try to watch in person next month when Cal Poly will visit Hawaii. Not being able to watch live matches on the Big Island makes me less of a UH fan and more of a Cal Poly alumni fan. Blame OC Sports for switching loyalties as they deny me watching a match live.
Everyone should know the OH was going to be a weakness this year, and RS was going to look very different. Only had one dependable OH last year, and she’s play professionally now. Ross is having a poor set so far, but difficult to draw conclusions. It’s the second set of the first match.
51.yes but expected big improvement from
Granato, at times last year she was the third best left side in the big west behind Annie and that Barber girl at long beach, she has been strugglingg tonight.
Maybe Williams on the outside when Burns comes back.
OHs are collectively hitting negative so far. I hope they up their game.
Mags not really doing much blocking wise so moving to the pins should not effect the wahine block much.
Seems like every time Greely gets close to coming back to where she was a few years ago she reaggravates that shoulder. Starting to wonder if we’ll ever see her play front row again
and maglio with a block
Granato lineshot goes wide. it’s 19-13. TO UH
Granato always seems to have problems when hitting against a block.
Oh geez I was rooting for Granato to have a big year and put the naysayers to rest but just not bringing it tonight. Worried about how ugly it will get against ucla’s huge block if she and the Ohs don’t improve.
Tough crowd for an opening night.
Not sure when/if you’ll see Burns.
Okay, no sugar-coating it. We badly lack hitters who can consistently put the ball down. Scrappy defense and good blocking can help make up for that, but will it be enough?
61. I think the issue is that there is no appreciable improvement in Granato’s hitting from last year to this year, and the passing is still problematic.
Btw, all OHs are 11-13-46 for -.043
62. Against a Marquette, yes. Against a UCLA, no.
At least 8 errors alreadg for Mckenna, just yikes.
Koelsch on two off a dig by Iosia. UH has closed to 20-18. TO Marquette
Our best OH so far was our backup setter.
Ahhh, well I didn’t expect it to be a cake walk. Williams is doing great for the block. Our passing needs work, and thats exactly what Robyn wanted to work on the 1st couple of practices. Once we can get our passing down then we can set mags more often. Grenato needs to just swing and play. Lets Go Wahine!!!!
65. Actually 12, as we have two McKenna’s, and both are struggling.
Skyler will be a monster at the net , she’s so green still.
Nice comeback, then just gave it away…
after going ahead at 21-20, UH gives up 5-0 run. Marquette wins 25-21
Oh well, please move mags to the pins coach Robyn, casey can man the middle with Skyler
Mags is needed badly at the pins with this passing.
UH is getting points off out-of-system plays, scrappy plays, and blocking; not from good hitting. Hard to win against good teams that way, but this is the first match of the season. Wonder what adjustments the coaching staff will make for set 3.
Both teams combine for 35 hitting errors so far. Blech!
Both teams combine to hit .053 for the match so far. Blech x 2!
In each set, the least worse team won. Ugly match. Thank goodness for Williams.
Yeah, I’m probably being too tough…
Okay time to put in sibley for ross or Granato, move Mags to the right
Come on coach wahine can’t lose this one.
Hawaii challenging a Marquette hit being called in
I can understand the pins struggling but there’s no good reason for Iosia failing to connect with Maglio in the middle after a perfectly good pass. The ladies need to settle down and at least execute the basics.
Doubt if you’ll see Sibley.
Hawai’i will have a height disadvantage all season long, not enough ‘tooling’ the bigger blockers I see
Is sibley injured or something? Don’t understand why not try her on the left with ross and granato struggling.
Marquette has pulled away at 15-10. it was 8-8
79. I have no idea how you come to this conclusion on height. Look at the opponents’ rosters. Most don’t have 6-4, 6-5 and 6-6 players on their rosters. More hyperbole.
Anderson aced It’s 20-15. TO UH
Frustrating night, pretty dissapointed in kahakai’s play , expected much more maybe too much I guess.
Mags should have as many attempts as the barber girl for Marquette, Mags is better.
When is the last time the wahine weren’t ranked in the top 25?
It looked like the Wahine were physically dominated at the end of that set. Not good.
Marquette making it look easy….so far. Maybe Wahine can turn it around in 4th set.
UH is fortunately not to have been swept tonight. Lucky to have won the first set.
Williams hitting .273 with 8 total blocks. Pretty good for an untouted freshman.
could use emma smith right now…not sure why they wanted to redshirt her… I like kendra’s energy but we need a hitter there…
Maglio playing outside. WF must be jumping for joy.
Thanks coach Mags needs to be a hitting option all match long, sky is gonna be our star in the middle now
I would have voted Skyler the UH player of the match. Truly a breakout performance from someone initially thought to be an emerging player for UH in the future.
My stat of the night–hitting errors per set:
San Diego: 9.0
Marquette: 7.0
UH: 6.2
UCLA: 2.7
Prop Bet Results:
Singing was longer than 2:35 (2:51)
Marquette had the player with the most kills tonite (Barber with 22)
UH did not have 2x as many SEs as SAs: 8 vs 5
There were no reported technical issues with the livestream
Yikes did Granato set a uh record for hitting errors in a match I lost count at 12. Ross wasn’t far behind it’s just going to be hard for the wahine to win if those two continue to hit that way.
Very disapointed in Kahakai’ s play also.. especially in that tip that got Marquette their 14th point in set five she should have had that no excuses.
I think UCLA caused a lot of those USD errors…
93. In what era? Rally scoring era to 30 must have had players with tons of errors. Funny how the official record book doesn’t track.
Ouch to the RPI.
i hate to be on the receiving end of Robin in the locker room. watching her facial expressions and watching her clench her fist really got my attention. BUT despite the loss you must admit that there were bright spots. Maglio on the outside, gosh she will be something to watch if they choose to move her there more. Williams, like WOW! what a joy it was to see a freshman have such a breakout performance. she is fun to watch, i am looking forward to seeing more from her. the others like, Granato and Kahakai, i must say i couldn’t have been more shocked at how bad they played tonight. i really expected more consistency from those two. well, it was expected that this team was not gonna have it easy, let’s hope it teaches them. it sucks not having a player who can terminate on almost every swing, but maybe it gives more opportunities to the others as well. i hope they do better tomorrow because if not, than it’s gonna be a short night and a really long season….lol
As long as the Wahine win tomorrow, there RPI will be fine, IMO they can afford maybe 3-4 losses in the pre season, assuming they dont win the big west. Kahakai was disappointing today but lets hope she plays well tomorrow
WF, you may want to go a little easier on Granato. Yes, she had 13 hitting errors, just like last year vs. Kansas State. But the great Nikki Taylor had 14 vs UCLA last year, and 14 against TCU the year before. Emily Hartong had 13 vs. Northridge in 2013.
I was disappointed in Granado’s’s lack of progress from last year. Kahakai’s passes should be flawless at this stage of her career and they are.not. You could tell that they had not done enough scrimmaging leading up to this match at least no as a unit .
. Why is Sibley in the dog house? I thought Iosia, and Williams played well. Ross is not the answer even though she did some good things . I give the new coach a c+ on her first outing.
99. Not sure how I am being hard just stating that her hitting errors were too high.
Those other players didn’t hit .000 either when they had those many errors so maybe that’s why it felt like Granato had more because the kills weren’t there, iosia set her too much.
Hope Granato plays much better tomorrow wahine desperatey need her too (if Sibley and Greeley dont play again). Granato has shown in the past she can hit well.
Ross on the other hand not sure if she has it in her , I think she might be better off as a spark plug off the bench.
I think coach Robyn needs to seriously think about trying out freshmen Howling at opposite and Mags at the left, sophia might surprise like Skyler.
Or maybe stick with Koelsch at opposite with Mags left, Koelsch just seems to come up clutch with dinks, or blocks and plays at the net. I was dissapointed she wasn’t in the fifth set tonight.
very sorry but had some major technical problems tonight
hoping it will be worked out by tomorrow.
agree it was disappointing in that they worked really hard in the comebacks, both Sets 3 and 5
then seems to look focus. It would have been huge for them, after going down 6-0 and 8-3 in Set 5 to pull that one out.
For sure, Marquette put up a big block. Rosenthal is 6-6, Barber 6-5. The key for Hawaii will be to out quick the other team. Thought the move of Maglio to outside was a good one. Williams had a great first match. Was a little surprised Koelsch wasn’t put back in. Thought she gave a good, different look
Not to pile on but other teams that have 6’6″ and 6’5″ players seem to make impact. It just doesn’t seem that Natasha Burns at her height hasn’t made any impact at all with the time that she has played. I know she is injured now but I am talking about last year. The games or sets she played, she really didn’t make an impact. Maybe she hasn’t played regularly so she hasn’t been able to get into a rhythm but I just see the difference. Yet someone like Skyler Williams at only 6’1 made a huge impact. IMO
101. You know exactly what you were doing, exaggerating her poor evening by asking if her errors were a UH record. You didn’t state her errors were too high, FACT. You didn’t include the context that her kills didn’t more than offset her errors, FACT. You only focused on her errors, FACT. Btw, Nikki hit .054 last year when she had those 14 hitting errors, and that wasn’t her worst hitting night last year. Hitting .000 is not materially worse. Again, just more of the same player demonization that started with Tai Manu-Olevao and continues to this day.
106. Robyn mentioned in the post-game interview with Spectrum that she wants players to pound the ball, hit it hard, and not do the roll shots, etc. Maybe that factored into her decision to keep Koelsch on the bench. She also said she moved Maglio to the outside because she needed to get more good swings.
I just got home from the SSC and my 2 cents worth. Some bright spots tonight and some disappointing play from a couple of veterans that should be carrying the team but aren’t. I hope tonight’s performance by Granato & Kahakai was an a aberration. You’re not going to win many matches when your OH1 hits .000 for the evening and your libero passes as many 1’s on serve receive and gets aced as much as she did….We sure could have used Emma Smith tonight but that’s water under the bridge now…..On the bright side, Williams was a blocking machine out there tonight and Mag’s looks good on the right. Why didn’t Sibley get a chance? She hurt also?
Is Big West going to be using that Sidearm Sport service for the away games too? If so we Hawaii folks who pay for Hawaiian Telcom are sunk. The stream was geographically restricted tonight.
Side note, if you have the more basic of Spectrum service, the app picks and chooses what it will let you stream *beyond reach of your home wifi* which is pretty draconian, especially if you are the account holder paying the monthly bills.
And there is no indication on the channel guide about what is and is not allowed for remote streaming, which does not seem very professional or mindful of customers. So for example, it blocked the pregame show and the match tonight. And yet it seems willing to play the retelecast. Same thing, OC 16 was streaming just fine when checking out the app yesterday.
Cindy, in post #78, you said you doubted we would see Sibley. Can you elaborate? Is she out of shape? Are the other hitters performing better in practice? Is she slowed by an injury or tweak?
Mags is the “Real Deal” on the outside. She needs to stay there cause she looks comfortable and can go OTT on 6’5 players.
Other than that we will be spotty from what i have seen over the past seasons with (Granato, Sibley, Ross , and Koelsch) All four have strengths and weaknesses, but. none is deserving to play whole match without being subbed. It all depends on matchups and who is hot that night. Williams played with alot of enthusiasm and. not like a Freshman. I like the potential she adds to the MB and Team. Quite disappointed in.our backrow play tonite I think its time to do more 6 on 6. It has been driving me so CRAZY why thete are 2 girls going for the ball , colliding, and letting the ball drop or shanked. We really need to communicate that and sit the player(s) on the bench if it continues. It looks so disorganized and sometimes dangerous. I expected the team to be way better in this area since coach really emphasized this the last 3 weeks or so. The Lineup I would start would be:
Iosia/ Setter
Maglio/Opposite(Terminator)
Williams/MB
Castillo/MB
Koelsch ,Granato, Ross, Sibley/ RS
Kahakai/Libero
Still want to see the 2 other Freshmen play
Could be a pleasant surprise
A win tonite would have beena great start for Coach Robyn and Angelica’s debut, but there’s always tomorrow against USD Torrero’s
from bad to ugly..uh was beaten by marquette. something that does not even exist on the map of volleyball. yes they had 6-4 6-5 and 6-6 but they were not fast and na wahine decided to play to their speed instead.
although wahine were sturdy but thats in terms of taking a beating and coming back or down from it. its not about tangling to see how you can bend na wahine, let alone broken them.
incredibly disappointing was set 5 not lined up like set 4 where you had emily in with her ‘magnum’ and kendra with her all aroundness. wahine lacked if not was devoid of command and control. emilys presence was not used much and savannah probably needs a break at libero as she caused conflict with her ‘wing libero’ claremarie and ran into her. probably clare needs to be libero since after all she is a libero naturally by design comparing to savannah. notice the passing caused norene to have to work more than necessary and cause further problems.
also without naming anyone that ‘small timid girl’ serve where you run up against the line and jump at last moment to serve is a no no. when i saw that in the practice, it definitely did not look promising and was more guaranteed to hit the bottom of the net as it did twice in some crucial moments. if that was to be used as a serving specialist/sub – unnecessary. especially if you going to play with big girls 6-4, 6-5, 6-6 then you need to play like a big girl. even better off standing flat foot and smash it/lob it over.
some side notes..skyler reaches the sky – thats the kine of middle needed. casey apparently appears better at middle and emily may need to take outside/opposite for command and control. neither emily nor even kendra should be missing in action.
and why was kalei, kirsten, and including natasha mia again?
one more thing, that ‘small timid girl’ serve looked like or did easily foot faulted and got away with it. better to stand just right behind the line and hit it over or stand far way from the line and hit it hard.
did robyn disciplined her wahine? its going to be unspeakable tonight and they need to beat themselves into shape for san diego tomorrow.
savannah was aced 5 times. swap libero with clare?
wahine also need to work on speed and execution. 6-4, 6-5, and 6-6 is sizable but slow as well.
someone needs to lead the team – command and control.
It was a roller coaster ride of a night. Best not to read too much into it. I know they can play better, I bet they do too. There were rotations where they matched up well and did well, and rotations that went long and painfully the other way.
Give credit to Marquette. Too much 6′ 5″ #10 Allie Barber, she played loose and smart in the front row, crushing and tipping. Their freshman libero did a very nice job of serve receive and passing, and had many long service runs just picking on the weakest serve receiver in the Hawaii back row at the time. Usually our libero, sometimes Granato, sometimes Ross. And for some unfathomable reason way too many of our serves went to their more than up to it libero.
I think Hawaii found a more effective lineup when they had Castillo at MH and Mags at pin. Who’d a thunk it. It took to set four to get there. Bet then came a very flat footed start to the 5th set and they got served off the floor until Marquette bailed them out with a service error. Mostly with Iosia serving, and Allie Barber rotated off the floor, Hawaii caught them at 12-12, but then back came in Allie Barber at OH, and Marquette’s quick to get the ball and fire it back into play left handed server, followed the same serving game plan as their libero, and that was that.
If they are going to play Mags at pin, they might as well try her through the back row as well and ask her to hit pipe, and maybe try some D sets. At this point I’m only surprised if there is something that Mags can’t do.
All is not lost though. USD isn’t as good a team as last year, and lack anyone as dominant as Marquette’s Barber. UCLA had a relatively easy time with them, mostly because UCLA didn’t beat themselves, because they had good balance in most of their rotations, and they had #3 Reily Buechler. USD had back row problems, some weak rotations and passing issues. UCLA mostly avoided their block and were patient, blocked well themselves, were usually in system, and #3 would bail them out when they weren’t. USD would have a couple or three bad rotations each set, falling back by two or three points in each bad rotation, and UCLA avoided that.
We have no left side attack. Disappointing in MG hits .000 and horrible passing by ppl you think could handle better. Gotta leave Mags at OPP
If I could pick the lineup…
S- NI
Opp- EM
MB- CC
MB- NB
L- SK
OH- KG
OH- KS
Still not happy about this loss, a midmajor starting a bunch of underclassmen came into the SSC and beat a wahine team that just made way too many errors.
I am however Happy Mags FINALLY got a chance as a pin hitter, been hoping for that since last season, seriously a pin hitter lineup of Mags, Nikki and Annie would have been absolutely insane!!
Hope for a better showing Saturday and get Coach Robyn her first win.
I guess what makes it so disappointing is that it was the wahine upperclassmen that played poorly ( except Mags) and got outplayed by Marquettes sophomore hitters and freshmen libero. Kahakai aced 5 times !!
117. Skyler Williams is starting all season and will be big west FOY if she keeps blocking like she did Friday.
I know Cindy mentioned Burns and Lipscomb likely weren’t playing, but why were Guinasso and a couple of others wearing gray jerseys?! Did they bring the wrong uniform?!
Thoughts on the match: The libero position is a weakness. Kahakai was aced five times, passed poorly and didn’t really pick up on her defensive play until later in the match when balls where being directly hit in her direction. It’s too bad that she’s the best option. Yikes.
I’m in for Maglio at Opposite. I thought it would be best to keep her in the middle because of her blocking, but with the way Williams performed in the middle, and Maglio getting more production on the right, it seems to be the way to go for now.
Granato and Ross were underwhelming as well. Well, Ross is a walk-on DS playing right last year and playing left this year, so I can understand. But Granato? Swinging blindly and directing her hits to the libero? Is this her first volleyball game ever?
That prolonged focus on passing and fundamentals by Ah Mow-Santos did not work, apparently. The passing was horrific.
It is going to be a tough week, our opponents are tough and ranked teams. Looking forward to the tomorrows to see what improvements and adjustments are made week to week. Would like to see Sibley, Howling and Lipscomb on the court against quality opposition, ’cause think we are really going to need them as the season rolls on; as they say “you can’t teach height,” we got some, so need to use it or lose it.
I was disappointed in the coaching. Marquette came in with a big lineup yet coaches persisted in playing 5’10 outsides for 3 games. They could not terminate and allowed Marquette to come back. It’s going to be a long season if coaches think that this is best lineup.
My biggest complaint was they did not play together as a team. They acted as if they just met. There is no great savior sitting on the bench waiting to bail them out. They have to step up themselves. And as far as I am concerned, the two local stars plus Marie lets us down big time.
Coach Ah Mow, please don’t become the Norm Chow of UH Wahine Volleyball.
hopefully wahine play their sizable freshmen more so tonight
This is only the first game. Aren’t players entitled to have at least one inconsistent game? The pieces are there and the coaches will figure this out. The team needs to be a lot more aggressive on offense and the defense will take care of itself as the team builds cohesiveness.
Well, oldtimer’, Shoji would’ve won that last set against an unranked team, no doubt.
Why isn’t this simple aspect of UH Wahine Volleyball ingrained into a Coach Robyn Ah Mow Santos? They keep saying, “oh, Olympian” and star/known UH player all that.
Her brand of individual attention to her players has only spoiled them!!! Auwe!
Give Robyn a break. This is her first game…new players…everyone struggles…The test is how they adjust and move forward.
Okino should not serve period!!!!
Definitely a positive from last night would be that Hawaii’s freshman #8 Skyler Williams can contribute right away. Finding out on night #1 that the stage wasn’t too big for her is a big plus for the rest of the season. It was fun to watch her. She had freshman moments and there will be more of those, but she showed she can play at this level and that is something very good to build on. For her personally, and for the team. I suspect we will see more line-ups and the coaches trying different things, but good to know they have a freshman that can be that 2nd MH. Eventually we may see Burns back, and we have yet to see what Howling can do. I’m guessing next weekend before we see if Burns is available, but maybe Howling gets a set or two this weekend. If that goes well, maybe both Mags and Castillo could both eventually move to the pins. It would be fun to see what that looks like at some point.
first game of the season and we got work to do…passing foremost. game conditioning will get better as the season continues. nervousness has to be under control, and having fun crucial. big ups to robin and her staff putting in the work. can definitely see improvements beginning tonight against san diego.
Shesh, Cut them some slack, it’s a brand new team and a brand new coach. It was the first game of the season. We will see how they play tonite and the following weeks. Bright spots, some junk things but that should be expected.
This is going to be a long season but I am going to show up and cheer this team on because they are going to need our support. I know we want a winning team but it may take a season or two to get there.
For those in Hawaii who missed last night’s broadcast, the game is now up on YouTube.
Is at least one poster here going off the deep end after the loss?
#124: One match and you’re already making comparisons to Norm Chow? Have you even looked at the roster and what the team lost?
#127: Last year, Shoji’s team couldn’t even get to a fifth set against unranked Kansas St. after losing in 4. And his team couldn’t win set 5 against unranked LBSU. No doubt.
New head coach, yes; new team – far from it. Skyler only new face in line-up. Too much poor play and mistakes in back row. Can fix.
The biggest loss from last year is not Nikki, but Emma Smith. As Hot wrote, no better option than Kahakai. Emma Smith would have been.
We need to give a lot of credit to Marquette. This is not a cupcake team. The team made the NCAA tourney last year. Team has a few senior aces: Barber #45; Off #39; Werch #78; Mohr #37. Freshman recruiting class ranked #21. Rosenthal was named to this past summer’s U.S. Women’s Collegiate National Team Europe Tour (CNT-Europe) team. The team travels a long way from Wisconsin to play its opener in a huge arena with a 6,800-strong pro-UH crowd, and pulled out a great victory. After the fourth set, Marquette could have folded, but the team continued to play its game. As poorly as UH played, they didn’t lose to a Bakersfield; they lost to a solid top 50 team.
#136, respectfully disagree, Nikki and Mitchem were the two biggest losses, Smith being the third. Two terminators in the lineup and UH wins in a relatively easy sweep with shorter rallies and fewer folks focusing on Kahakai’s poor play. Smith’s absence feels more acute because there are no terminators to bail out the poor passing.
Can someone tell me where KALEI GREELEY is? She was a staple on the LS her freshman and sophomore years and then played only back row last year due to rehabbing from surgery, but practically no word about her. Granted she’s not Nikki, but I have to think she would have been a big help last night.
This team will get better! The team chemistry, leadership, and confidence isn’t there yet, but it will come… Boy, but Maglio sure did look like she belonged on the outside, didn’t she?
Kalei at libero? Is that even an option? I say give it a shot if kahakai struggles and kalei is healthy enough to play
Have YOU noticed that Wahine are ranked AND this is their house? Stan Sheriff arena wasn’t made for losing.
If this is a losing season, fans will wonder about nepotism. There were a bunch of coaches who could’ve hit the ground running.
Comparison to Chow is correct. Ah Mow could end up being the hoomeamea coach assure the public the program is A-O.K. until the Wahine V-ball answer to Rolo (Tee Williams or any of the Wong bros.)
Thank you.
I think Kalei would help stabilize the passing at least, is she not able to play backrow?
Florida just beat Nebraska in 5…looks like Stanford will be #1 with Gators #2…
I am rooting for Marquette against UCLA today to keep the wahine alive in the tournament
People relax and let Robyn coach…she ain’t the next norm chow…kahakai needs to be more vocal by directing traffic in the back row and be aggressive…she was letting other players move in front of her in serve receive and defense
$5000 to anyone who can explain the logic or insightfulness of post 142 to me.
logic and insightfulness of post 142: Here’s my spin on it, the verdict is still out on the hiring of Robin. It is only the first game. The Wahine has a history of being ranked in the top 20 for at least a decade and we are playing in an arena that marks this success. As a storied program there were many qualified applicants and Robin rose to the top of the list, she served as an assistant coach both at the U of H and with the Jr National Team marking her Coaching experience. But, what really sets her apart is her character and her mentorship under one of the most successful Vball Coaches in the Country and his recommendations to succeed him. How about this?? Do I earn the 5K???
not going to try to answer by numbers.
Agree that people need to take a step back and give this team and staff a chance. It was one game.
As for the players in Grey: have said that a number of players haven’t been cleared . several were participating in drills but not fully participating.
Burns (knee), Greeley (good with shoulder but now a back issue), Guinasso (undisclosed), Ma’afala (knee)
As for the question on Sibley.
Tako. Look how fast the decision was made—she probably was NOT the best choice. It seemed to appear faster than June Jones’ TV introduction as SMU coach!
Heh. Maverick’s gotta pay out money if his question is answered, no?
Ms. Luis. O.K. Will give this team—and coach—a chance going forward.
As for Sibley, she wasn’t playing on the ‘A’ side much.
Regarding the polls. UH is No. 3 in all-time times being ranked in the poll. Stanford and Nebraska tied for 1. Wahine dropped out of poll a couple of years ago for a couple of weeks.
a couple of notes on spelling. It’s Robyn with a Y, Granato with a T not a D.
Smith was a loss but IMHO wasn’t huge. a little surprised that Okino went in ahead of Gong but they might have been looking for a certain type of serve.

new thread up for Saturday
one comment about Shoji not losing that match last night.
do you not remember Oregon in 2014?
to finish the thought on Sibley. she didn’t play much on the A side during preseason practices so I didn’t see her playing last night.
was surprised about Koelsch not returning. thought she brought a lot early
