Warriors enter pool play

After a brief practice this morning, which ended with linebacker Solomon Matautia’s interception during the 2-minute drill, coach Nick Rolovich gathered the players and ordered them to the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center for a pool day.

“They’ve been working hard,” Rolovich said. “Get a little off their legs, get them doing something, and have a little fun together. That’s important. We’re almost two weeks away (from the Aug. 26 opener). It’s time to take care of the bodies a little bit.”

This training camp, the Warriors have worked on everything from recovering fumbles to aligning in the victory formation. Today, the final session was on the offense trying to rally from a deficit in the final 2 minutes. The first series ended with a scoring pass from Dru Brown to John Ursua.

On the second series, Matautia picked off Cole McDonald. Rolovich yelled for Matautia to go to the ground rather than risk losing the football on the return.

“Go down to win the game,” Rolovich said, “and we’ll carry you off the field.”

Rolovich has been impressed with the evenness of production between the offense and defense this camp.

“If it’s because of mistakes, then that’s not as good,” Rolovich said. “But if people are making plays, and it’s going back and forth, there’s a difference in how we’re practicing. We’re pretty competitive.”

This was reported previously, but no harm to repeat – Bobby Curran said Spectrum will broadcast the UMass game free. Good news; smart; good marketing. Dru Brown to John Ursua appears to be the go-to connection. I think we’ll also see the connection with Tui Unga who is a wide-out in disguise.

I’m excited about the upcoming football season. We need Spectrum to stream the games to the Mainland.

    # 5. I thought you guys used a slingbox last season.

If it weren’t you, then maybe you might want to look into it.

Off topic, but it John Veneri is getting kinda portly. He better watch out and take better care of his health. Still remember him as a swelt SB playing for UH back in the day. One quick way is to just walk (everywhere) and cut out white rice.

John Veneri is grinding every week on Sam Choy’s program. Notice he is salivating when it’s time to eat. Obviously, his appetite is very good. But yes, he looks like he’s around at least 30 pounds more than his paying weight. That’s what the metabolism does to people when you get older and don’t exercise as much. In my 30s I was in the 140s. In my late 40s and mid 50s I was up to 175-185. No close to 70 I’m around 150-155. I’m not worried about Veneri. The guy that needs to watch out is Kekaula.

H-Man. Thanx for the heads up on Spectrum. Missed it. Nothing like whipping it up at noon in the comfort of your living room or patio w family n friends.
    Brian Smith continues to evolve.
Going away and coaching at different venues was a great investment.
Ditto for the others including ROLO and STUZZ.
Smith wants a ball control tempo so he will seek to establish his run game early. UH recruited well at RBs and if our OL gels- Smith can open up his play book and is unafraid to toss the long ball in any situation on the field. Hopefully, OL coach CN can have his hogs ready by the 26th.
