‘Bows led NCAA in fewest walks allowed

One of the things baseball coaches and beat writers have in common is an affinity for pitchers who throw strikes. (Reporters with tight deadlines also appreciate quarterbacks who don’t throw incompletions, point guards who don’t foul, especially in four-possession games in the final minute, and soccer players who don’t do the worm-like-injury dance after being kicked in the shin.)

And that’s why there’s great appreciation for the ‘Bows’ 2017 pitching staff, which led the nation in fewest walks allowed this season. (NCAA stats became final following the end of the College World Series.) The ‘Bows relinquished 114 walks in 457 innings, an average of 2.25 per nine innings. It was commendable because: 1) none of the starters consistently topped 91 mph, and 2) “we basically replaced 70 percent of the innings pitched” from the previous season, according to coach Mike Trapasso.

That meant the ‘Bows were effective in the lower part of the strike zone.

“Kudos to the guys and all the work they put into it,” Trapasso said.

There’s optimism for 2018. Starting pitchers Dominic DeMiero, Neil Uskali and Jackson Rees will be back for their senior seasons. They also will add several prospects. Hard-throwing Cade Smith, the Minnesota Twins’ 16th-round pick, has indicated he likely honor his commitment to enroll at UH in August. The Twins hold his rights until 11:59 p.m. Aug. 15.

The burro leads Hawaii in fewest walks taken in 2017. Very lazy.

    Great work, BaseBows!

And beat writers with tight deadlines don’t like volleyball games that go to 5 games and then go overtime. ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ™„

    10 weeks from now!

Come join our group of 300 UH fans on the Hawaii side line in Sections 6H, 7H & 8L; 12-19 rows up around the 5 to 20 yard line. these sections are closer to the field as this stadium curves in & this is where visiting fans sit. This stadium has 77+ rows so this are great seats closer to the field. let me know if you want these tix as I had to pay for these upfront. Text me at 415-324-0585. Prices are $69 or $89 (Sect 6H). These seats have backs (not benches).

So, now that there is no outside retail location, I would imagine that the UH apparel sales are way down.. making your to the bookstore is not your everyday trek.

Surely there’s an online store but it’s not the same as being there to see it, try it on, and the like.

Seven Basebows were named All-Academic Big West. Friesen, Hornung,Martin,Mitchell,Ramirez,Ryan and Weeks.
One requirement is to have competed in at least 50 percent of their team’s contests.
How is that rule applied to the pitchers ? Does it mean suited up for 50 % or ?
