Bear market: Cal coaches join UH camp

California coaches are the latest to be added as instructors at the UH’s Elite Camp on June 9-10 on the Manoa campus.

The Bears join UH, USC, Utah and Washington as the coaching faculty for high-school-aged players. This is Hawaii’s only football camp for that age group involving Division coaches this year.

The NCAA limits Division I coaches to 10 days of participating in camps held on an NCAA member’s campus or playing site.

The UH coaches will attend camps at USC (twice), Utah, Washington, California and Lewis & Clark.

It could become a Bear market and not in a good way.

If a local kid wants to go away for school, they’re going away. Keeping mainland coaches from UH camps isn’t going to help at all. So many ways to communicate with our kids. Plus, UH coaches are going to mainland camps too. You have to trust in Rolo and staff that they will bring in good players wherever they come from.

This is a good thing. It’s good to establish ties with these Pac-12 coaches. There is many a time where power coaches redirects potential recruits this way. Once they fill on their positional quotas they may send their 3rd or 4th target our way instead of their conference rivals.

Agree. This is good for UH and Hawaii’s prep players. The opportunity for athletes to attend/graduate from Cal, Wash, USC is a huge plus. UH wants to get to that level and no better way than making friends with them. Also, don’t forget DII/DIII coaches will also be participating in the elite camp. Good for everyone.

Exactly! if anything the schools you don’t want to invite are other non-power 5 schools who are our main competition for recruiting.

Having good relationships with Pac 12 teams can have dividends if not immediately, then surely down the road. One is scheduling home and home games such as UH and UW has done, as well as USC. It’s been a long time since we played Utah. Plus, it makes sense to have relationships with teams in the West Coast area, and Utah where UH recruits quite a bit. No make sense to have a Big Ten, or Big 12 type team here. Keep planting those seeds, and maybe one day after we’re gone something might come to fruition. Have to keep dreaming, and have the audacity of hope!!!

I know this is a UH board. But I was wondering if anyone knows if the GPA camp will have any college coaches attending the camp? I know UH is holding the camp same time as the GPA camp. Also NCAA rule changes about college coaches attending camps have drastically changed in the last year. Was just wondering if you were a student athlete which camp would Ben the best for you? I would have to think the smart choice would be the UH camp.

I found this on the internet; Ref. excerpt Star-Advertiser 9 May 2017. “GPA which is scheduled for Saint Louis School on June 7-8 will be without Division I coaches unless its request for an NCAA exemption is approved.” Division IA (FCS)/ II/III coaches are eligible to participate. The UH elite camp is on June 9-10, so there is no conflict on dates.

i don’t like pac12 coaches in my back yard.this gives them a chance to better evaluate the second tier talent.they can take our best, but i don’t want them to start taking everything.

I would build the stadium on Mauna Kea.

Roll on you bears! Agree, this is a net positive for UH with the closer ties to the Pac-12 since they invite our coaches to their camps.

    Grin and bear it.
Q: What do you get if you cross a skunk with a bear?
    A: Winnie the PU!
