Very spirited practice this morning. No Mol in the arena so Solbring with the first team.
They are very loose this morning. Started at 630 a.m.
It’s amazing how many longest they use. Various cheers in a various languages.

Note to WaWa about ‘deleted’ post the other day.Never saw it. I checked the filters and didn’t find anything in there. Did you want to repost? What was it about?

  2. Warriorfan April 27, 2017 8:03 am

Do they leave for Columbus tomorrow?

Hope being back in the midwest elevates Dalton’s play.

  3. WaWa April 27, 2017 9:30 am

No worries, it was in regards to Smith’s transfer. The usual disappointment. Maybe she saw the writing on the wall along with wanting to have a bigger role, play close to home, PAC12, pairs in beach, etc.

I know this is bringing up old news and maybe I missed it, but why did Nainoa Frank not continue playing this year? We do not have depth in the middle, granted Gasman would be ahead of him, but what made them move him to OH with only Mol, Gasman, and Solbrig in the middle. I wouldnt even count McKellar in there.

I’m only aware of Gage Worsley, but we need another big time middle (or two) coming in.

Rumor on VT that 2018 setter Liliana Light has decommitted.

  5. Robin April 27, 2017 11:04 am

I’m speculating that the 2 PM scheduled Hawaiian time start for the Hawaii-Penn State match starts on time….with the first match at noon Hawaiian being BYU-Barton.

    Re: #4

I’ve heard thru sources that the scholarship offer was pulled.

  7. warriorfan April 27, 2017 3:20 pm

6.Don’t like when coaches do that but at least Light has 7 months until signing date to get offers and find another school.

    8. Students getting in free too.
and OSU is hosting another final four in just three years….
    Why can’t UH host one?

  10. rabbit ears April 27, 2017 5:05 pm

#3 What writing on the wall are you taking about concerning Emma Smith? I am puzzled.

  11. Kazu April 27, 2017 5:08 pm

6 Maybe Coach thought that we already have enough setters for now, plus she was Shoji’s recruit. Kinda feel sorry for the recruit to have the rug pulled out from under her.Expectation for this years team is not so much with new coach. Every one have to get adjusted.

  12. Warriorfan April 27, 2017 5:17 pm

11.UH will need a new setter in 2018 Koelcsh is a senior this upcoming season.

  13. Warriorfan April 27, 2017 5:27 pm

    3. Maybe Frank saw the same writing on the wall of which you speak of Smith.

  14. WaWa April 27, 2017 5:46 pm

    10. Rabbit Ears, I thought she had the skill set to take the lib position from Kahakai. Maybe she felt she had a chance with the coaching change until RAMS (Kahakai’s former ‘Imi ‘ike coach) got the job. I think a poster mentioned Anderson & Guinasso were RAMS’ 1 & 2 respectively. I’d like to think that Smith was technically 2nd Lib and not 3rd in line for DS. Anyways, spilled milk already. I wish her the best of luck, she will be a darling for Cal and hopefully help them out of that PAC12 cellar.

    13. Warrior, very true. He’d definitely be behind Mol & Gasman, but I thought he’d be next off the bench and be a solid back up. I was definitely rooting for him as a local talent and suffering that knee injury would’ve liked to see him last all the way til his senior night. Spilled milk lol.

Gosh, that Penn State game can’t come soon enough!! Hope the Warriors can pull it off! This year’s team is very exciting to watch!

    6. That must have been tough for Light if true. IMO, it’s not fair to the recruit. Maybe RAMS wanted a pure setter to backup Iosia in 2018. Googled Light and saw that she was an attacker as well. There was even an article that called her “best middle blocker.” She averages around 7 assists/set and over a kill/set, which would indicate that she’s playing in a 6-2. I don’t know how good Ma’afala is as a setter, but she has two years of eligibility left and maybe she’s good enough to be the second setter. I hear Ma’afala and RAMS have a club connection.

Regarding Smith, somebody on VT was saying that RAMS wanted Anderson and Guinasso as the first two DS, which didn’t sit well with Smith. While I want to see more of Guinasso, I agree with WaWa that Smith had the skills to be the libero this year. IMO, she was more consistent than Kahakai last year. Also agree that Smith was second at L (possibly first), which would automatically put her on top of the DS depth chart, with Guinasso second. Anderson has the serving role all to herself. She’s proven herself there.

One of the problems with hiring a “local” coach is that the perception of favoritism toward “local” kids could really hurt recruiting. My impression of Robyn is she will play the best person regardless. She has been on the international stage. She knows that she needs to reach out beyond Hawaii to keep the program relevant. The current changes are par for the course with any coaching change. Lets wait to see the product.

  17. tako April 28, 2017 6:51 am

Not used to reading things coming out from the WVB program like a player decommitting ’cause rumor has it, the offer was “pulled;” Wahine has always been a program that honors its committments. Or, speculation that a player has slid down the depth chart at “this point” of the year, it makes No Sense. Like most fans thought Emma played well last season and would challenge for a starting position. Right now it seems there is more negative PR emerging from the coaching change and may have a significant impact on its image and consequently affect future recruiting. Hope the Coaching staff rights the ship, they say, “perception is that person’s reality.” Comments???

  18. Kazu April 28, 2017 7:43 am

17 I agree with you 100%. This situation with Light bothers me the most so i’m holding off my yearly donation to the program.

  19. jm2375 April 28, 2017 9:57 am

Just wondering, why does the DIII tournament have 12 teams and the DI-DII tournament only have 6?

  20. Maverick April 28, 2017 10:02 am

The real issue is that there is no communication with the fans about anything related to the program. RAMS is still not settled in, we have no idea what is going on with the assistants, and very little outreach from the new coach, obviously. However, when RAMS was hired, most folks said they would give her the chance to prove herself, and despite recent events, I think the fans owe at least that much to her. Transitions are difficult.

  21. Maverick April 28, 2017 10:10 am

    19. There are around 90 Div III programs and 43 Div I-II programs.

A great Aloha Friday to all! If not great yet, please keep working on it.

Again, in the off season, we tend to get our exercise by jumping to conclusions. If you go to the VT site, you’ll see there’s no dependable source or validator of the information. We don’t truly know if she decommitted and/or had her scholarship pulled. Or the reasons, if true. I don’t see any posters on that subject that I recognize as “insiders” to the Hawaii VB program or for Light.

Dave endorsed Robyn. How about giving her at least a season to see what she’s all about. One thing for sure, there are a lot of arm-chair critics on blogs. Look at all the things that were said about Dave through the years.

  23. setaone April 28, 2017 11:03 am

Totally agree about giving RAMS a chance. Right now, we are all going on hearsay.

Just like a student athlete has the right to leave after a coaching change (for whatever reason), an incoming coach has the right to make personnel changes.

And to her defense, RAMS most likely has seen Light play in tournaments on the mainland and has had an opinion if Light would be an athlete she wanted on her team.

Sandbows win 4-1 over Cal Poly. Will face #1 seed LBSU tomorrow morning at 10 am (7 am HT).
