New NCAA rules to impact UH football

The NCAA Division I Council today approved several measures that will impact the University of Hawaii football team.

“It was big day,” UH coach Nick Rolovich said.

Among the new rules:

> Early-signing period: If the measure receives final approval from Collegiate Commissioners Associations, high school seniors may sign letters of intent during a three-day period in December. Previously, only junior-college players intending to transfer at mid-academic year could sign during the 72-hour period. The concern is whether a player who signs in December has an escape option if the head coach leaves the program before the February signing period.

> Signing limit: FBS teams, such as UH, can sign no more than 25 football prospects each year. Previously, if one of the 25 did not meet the NCAA eligibility requirements, an FBS school could sign a replacement. But under the new rule, if a player does not qualify, the team only can have 24 players for that recruiting class. This will put pressure on schools to ensure that recruits are in good academic standing.

> Tenth coach: Starting in January, each FBS can hire a 10th full-time assistant coach. Currently, FBS schools are limited to nine full-time assistant coaches.

> Hiring restrictions: An FBS school will not be allowed to hire a coach or individual associated with prospective student-athlete to an off-field or strength/conditioning position for a two year period before a prospect enrolls and a two-year period after. That would mean UH would not be able to hire a coach from, say, Kahuku to a non-coaching football job if it plans on recruiting a Red Raider in 2019. There is no restriction to hiring a coach or associate to a full-time coaching job.

> Satellite camps: FBS coaches are limited to 10 days of attending or coaching summer camps. All the camps also must be hosted by an FBS school on its campus or where it plays its home games. For instance, USC coaches are permitted to coach at a three-day UH camp on the Manoa campus, but they would have to deduct those three days from their 10-day limit. It also would mean that a popular independent camp, like GPA College Football Showcase Camp, which drew more than 500 participants last year, would not be allowed to run a camp on the Manoa campus without UH’s sponsorship. And if a non-NCAA entity held a camp at, say, a high school field, it would not be allowed to bring in FBS or FCS coaches.

Interesting new rules … I like the one about the “Signing Limit” … this will put pressure on the recruits to make sure they take care of business in the classroom. Budget wise that 10th Coach may be a problem for UH. Hopefully Dave Matlin will be able to find the funds somehow/someway as it’ll be interesting to see which side of the ball “Rolo” will hire for … can’t wait for the season to start

I don’t like the signing limit rule since schools like UH have to take more risks to get top talent, and one of those risks include guys who might not qualify. This will further spread the divide between the P5 and rest. This might make UH more attractive if we can waive the Algebra 2 requirement; however, a race to the bottom for academic standards will not be the intention.

Early signing period might be good for UH because I like our scouting, but puts more pressure on the students to commit during the Fall semester. Also, us being far away makes it harder to schedule weekend visits. We might run out of time on some recruits. All in all, I change my mind and think this is bad for UH because having one absolute deadline forces recruits to pick a school or get left out. By having tiered recruiting, the Big Schools are better able to control quality of second tier recruits.

LIVE ALOHA STREAM WARRIORS Rally tomorrow (Saturday) at the Stan Sheriff Arena at 6pm before the Men’s Volleyball game. This is an impromptu rally to spread the word to the UH Sports Ohana that it is a priority to get Live Streaming of UH sports (in this case, Football) to the mainland/international. I’m afraid of the negative consequences if we have a repeat of last season (no streaming). Bring a sign, bring your voice. Warrior Nation needs you. And keep writing to your legislators, senators, and congresspeople.

This will really make athletes have to think before they put pen to paper.

The new rule also means that it will be UH putting out the big camps, not the outside interests, so the money will stay in Manoa.

    Is it raining in Manoa?

I love Rainbow sports so much, I even watch softball.

My backup plan is to watch that film about the cannibalistic girl at the Kahala Theaters.

It is raining pretty hard in Mililani.

    Guud Afternoon Tsaikos…Bootiful day!
Early signing…this might pressure hs kids more? what about all the recruiting trips?
Signing Limits…is there a date where a recruit can be removed from the offer/signing and we’ll still be able to sign someone else? i.e. sign kid then find out right after, they don’t qualify or maybe they physically can’t go to school (illness, injury etc..)
    Satellite Camps….have it a Aloha sponsored by….

Muggy on the Northside..small kine ua off and on.

If a recruit has an injury that would end his playing career before he even enrolled the school gets back the scholarship.
But that means the player can never, ever, play again.

Just got back from the softball field.

The men’s volleyball team was asked to leave.

Then they were cheering out past right field.

And then they were asked to vacate that area, too.

They were just noisy. I heard nothing objectionable hurled towards the opposing team.

One of the players just seemed exorbitantly happy to be near one of the Hawaii players. And this infectiousness rubbed off on his teammates.

    Wonder who instigated these rules?
    The big 5 BS-ers?
Some NCAA staffer who had nothing to do so
made up some new rules to justify his/her salary?
