Former Warriors prep for pro day

“It feels good to run in the sunlight,” said former Warrior rush end Makani Kema-Kaleiwahea, who, along with offensive lineman Leo Koloamatangi, spent the past two months training in chilly Bellevue, Wash.

Yesterday, Kema-Kaleiwahea and several former teammates took a test run at Azusa Pacific University’s Dillon Field, where UH’s pro day will be held tomorrow. Fifteen former Warriors are signed up.

Kema-Kaleiwahea is being viewed as a rush end or outside linebacker. Koloamatangi received several follow-up inquiries after playing in an all-star game.

Linebacker Jerrol Garcia-Williams turned down an all-star game invitation to allow a thumb injury to heal. Garcia-Williams and receiver Makoa Camanse-Stevens trained in Hawaii under Chad Ikei. Camanse-Stevens has a different look. He lost 5 pounds (and now weighs 200), reduced his body fat from 16 percent to 5.09 percent, and shaved his head. “The most important part of the combine is the 40,” Camanse-Stevens said. “It’s all about speed. … Any little edge can help. I’m at the point where I don’t care how I look. I need to perform. It’s about the numbers I put up. If shaving my head is a mental thing where it makes me think I run faster, makes me more aerodynamic, so be it. I’ve got nothing to lose.”

Wideout Marcus Kemp also trained in Hawaii, where he is taking four classes this semester toward his degree in economics.

Cornerbacks Jalen Rogers and Jamal Mayo trained in Houston. “It was good to go somewhere where we didn’t know anybody so we could just dial in,” Mayo said.

Running back Paul Harris said he trained in Ohio and California.

Kicker/punter Rigo Sanchez trained under former NFL kicker Michael Husted in San Diego, participated in Gary Zauner’s kicking combine, worked out with a kicking coach in Chico, Calif., and did whole-body workouts at two fitness centers near his family’s home in Central California. For pro day, Sanchez’s kicking drills will be at Citrus Stadium, where Azusa Pacific plays its home games.
