UH offseason training: Week 3, day 1

A sorta-sorta funny thing happened to the Warriors this morning: the Ching Athletic Complex lights were not turned on for the 6 a.m. workout.

But in the dark and cool (61 degrees), the Warriors worked out on the turf before heading to the weight room for the “strength” part of the offseason strength/conditioning program. There was plenty of light when the group returned for the second phase of the workouts. The second group worked out at 8 a.m.

Hope these recruits will be able to come in and at least compete for playing time … these local kids going away must be like deer at night on a road when a car comes along … they see all these fancy “amenities” that bigger programs have and their eyes get big … seems like they want to go away for that … mentioned this before … about a year ago I met a certain well known former UH RB in the lobby of a bank. We got to talking and one thing we discussed is after their playing days are over kids who stay and home and play for UH have a better chance of getting a job than those who go away and are forgotten about. This former player told me that he had recently received a call from a local kid, well known, who went away for college, and did not get much playing time. The call was “hey Uncle” can you help me find a job” …
To the Mainland/American Samoa/Australian kids coming into play for UH, ALOHA AND MAHALO for being WARRIORS !!!!!

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS !!!!!

    808 #4:

yes, fully agree that players who play and stay in Hawaii have a much better chance of being hired if all things are equal

as an employer, this is a no-brainer!!!

if not for the “local section of the sports page on Sundays, there would be NO mention or very little of players who went away — yes, not all can play for UH, but those who are “offered”, but go away I give no time to reading how they are doing

With really just one full day before signing day here’s to optimistically hoping that some local talent chooses to be Warriors, for no other reason that that’s what they really want to do-completely agree only those that want to be part of the program should gain entry. From what I can tell when all the dust settles, when all is said and done this may be the best class ranking wise the program has had in a long time. The rating services adjust everything after the dust settles but it could be an upper 70 ranking. If you list all the contributors and contributions of last years recruits it is very impressive-lets get a bigger batch of those young men! GoWarriors!!!!

Doug Russell of O’Dea High School is affiliated with the same teaching order that founded and staffed Damian HS. Famous alumni include Freddie Couples. I to attended one of these same schools in Chicago, Leo HS. Chicago still has three of these schools in the Chicagoland area St Lawrence and Brother Rice high school. The schools are typically recognized for outstanding Academics and great achievements in sports competition

OOPS … regarding my post #4 … I stated the Mainland/American Samoa/Australia … forgot to include our commit from Canada …

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS !!!!!

  10. H-Man January 30, 2017 12:21 pm

Maybe bad news. Looks like we might have lost Eneasi Kavapalu. He is no longer on Scout’s Hawaii list of commits.

  11. amela January 30, 2017 12:28 pm

I hope God doesn’t change his mind and tell Mermea to go somewhere else. Respect to those who commit and keep to their commitment. Here, there, anywhere. Those that don’t are disrespectful to the schools they give their commit to and bag.

  12. amela January 30, 2017 12:29 pm

Love that these guys get up early and commit to helping the team and themselves get better.

  13. DaveLetterMan January 30, 2017 2:26 pm

Interesting they Kavapalu’s scout.com page is blank.

  14. DaveLetterMan January 30, 2017 2:32 pm

Kavapalu’s twitter page hasn’t been updated since 3 days ago and it now says class of 2018

  15. 808warriorfan January 30, 2017 2:57 pm

Kids these days … they need to learn that their word is their bond and what a handshake means … scary that this is the next generation

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS !!!!!

  16. Derek January 30, 2017 3:23 pm

Maybe Kavapalu is grayshirting to January 2018.

  17. Shoichi January 30, 2017 3:37 pm

Kavapalu’s twitter has had ‘Class of 2018’ for quite some time. Probably the reason he isn’t listed as a 2017 commit.

  18. H-Man January 30, 2017 3:54 pm

DLM/Shoichi, thanks for the update. 2018, sounds good to me !

  19. Maddog50 January 30, 2017 4:35 pm

Very pleased as it stands-something tells me pleasant surprises on the horizon-

  20. PONO January 30, 2017 8:53 pm

Poachers out in full force. Reinwald, Mermea, Taufa’asau.

  21. 808warriorfan January 30, 2017 10:25 pm

I have to take a step back here and reflect … here you have all these kids who don’t know what it means about giving you word … your word is your bond along w/ a handshake … IT MEANS SOMETHING … yet they are being lured away by programs w/ “better, previous” win-loss records … that means “Rolo” and his staff must be doing a GREAT JOB in at least identifying these kids and Hawaii is in the mix … kids going to San Diego State please remember that Rocky Long is 66 years old and just signed a 5 year extension … DOESN’T MEAN HE’LL FULFILL IT !!!!! Also remember if you sign w/ an MWC school and want to transfer back home, in addition to the NCAA 1 year transfer rule, the MWC adds on another so think long and hard … Just because a team has had a winning record in recent years doesn’t mean you’ll be with a winner for the next 4-5 years. There is no such thing as a “DYNASTY” in College Football … good example … Oregon … after Marcus left Coach Helfrich went after guys @ QB who could transfer because they got their degree and had 1 year to play … Vernon Davis ring a bell ??? … Coach Taggart has his work cut out for him but he has a “Carte Blanche” checkbook with Phil Knight of Nike … that doesn’t guarantee success …
The only thing guaranteed is ALOHA … IT IS HERE TO STAY AND WILL NOT DIE … can’t blame that “REWALD” kid for going to CAL … great educational opportunity and seems Justin Wilcox has put together a great staff

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS !!!!!

  22. 808SEC January 31, 2017 2:53 am

Hate to bring up a sore subject, but I guess I’m going to anyway. With all these kids coming in to play for the Warriors outside of the State of Hawaii, I hope UH and Oceanic cable can figure out a way to show the games so that family and friends of these player can watch them play.

  23. Maddog50 January 31, 2017 5:47 am

Know it won’t make a difference but the Coach of the Beavers after 8 seasons as a head coach he has yet to achieve a winning record-8 seasons-left Wisconsin over frustration with academic requirements of the school. Huh!-

  24. Maddog50 January 31, 2017 6:01 am

So the limit of scholarships for an FCS school is 85 total. The annual addition is limited to 25, if the numbers are correct it appears some schools “over recruited”. Meaning some of these are known not to make it or a numbers massage is taking place. Certainly no expert, but some of these guys (college recruiters i.e college coaches are nothings but cons-our numbers look legit and Coach Rolovich and staff certainly demonstrate integrity-does not appear nor has there been any known evidence of players being “pushed aside” because they may not be making on-field contributions. I will take Coach Rolovich over a number of these guys we Do recruiting battle with. GoWarriors!!!!!

  25. Maddog50 January 31, 2017 6:02 am

    Meant FBS-

  26. haka January 31, 2017 7:17 am

Some are solid and firm in their decision. For others, the field may look greener on the other side of the fence. It works both ways when coming down to the wire in the battle of poaching and the recruiting trickle down effect it creates. The Warrior staff is doing a great job with quality commitments and that is evident as teams are trying to lure them away to the perceived dark side. On top of all that are the battles still being waged for the uncommitted. I find it pretty nerve wracking and interesting as a fan and can only imagine what the coaches are going through. In the end, when the dust settles, those who want to be Warriors will be Warriors! And that is solid!

  27. H-Man January 31, 2017 8:15 am

Well, Scouts’ Hawaii board has not changed since yesterday. Still 19 commits. I suppose this is good news.

  28. clyde January 31, 2017 8:19 am

Stephen’s board has more credibility than Scout’s … just saying.

  29. jeezy33 January 31, 2017 9:10 am

    Kavapalu isn’t signing this year.

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!

Friend of mine from Oklahoma came to stay with me for a vacation a few times. He tried to gt me and my wife to come and visit him. During our conversations he told me that he has a patio but don’t use it much because of the constant 30+ mile and hour winds that blow. I then asked him if he were vacationing. would he rather be in Hawaii or Oklahoma. Conversation about visiting him in Oklahoma came to a screeching halt.
One gets spoiled with our weather. The environment and Aloha gets overlooked. The beauty gets taken for granted. People or our recruits see the difference and are happy to come here.
Welcome to our Warrior recruits! You will make a difference in our team and community.
    IMUA WARRIORS!
