A true hall of fame

The next group looking to start a Hall of Fame or Circle of Honor or World’s Greatest Grandpa organization should look to the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame as a how-to-do-it-right model.

Unlike Cooperstown, which is becoming more and more exclusive and divisive, and the Circle of Honor, in which the most popular sport is under-represented, the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame is a celebration of the relationship between a culture and a game that has become a culture.

Polynesia is not just a place — albeit 118,000 square miles — but a state of mind. At last night’s inauguration banquet for this year’s class, there was a moment of silence for LaVell Edwards and an achievement award to SportsCenter anchor Neil Everett. Edwards touched lives, as host Vai Sikahema noted, while Everett, a hanai son of the islands, was touched with his tribute.

The 930-plus attendees were reminded that Marcus Mariota, through his ties with Nike’s Phil Knight, donated the helmets and uniforms for tonight’s all-star game. Each player gets to keep the helmet and gear.

Former Colorado quarterback Sefo Liufau, who harbors NFL aspirations, turned down an opportunity to play in today’s East-West Shrine Game because he wanted to attend the PFHOF ceremonies this weekend. He was named the PFHOF College Player of the Year. He said participating in the ceremonies was more important to him.

    Ipu Man:
    I have a “World’s Greatest Grandpa” T-shirt.
I wear it in front of the other grandfathers at family gatherings.

I’m just amazed at how quickly and grandly the PFHOF has grown. Last night’s banquet was wonderful in terms of organization, elegance and star power. Now all they have to do is work on keeping the event under 4 hours …

I hope Rolo’s potential recruits were able to attend. That was an impressive gathering.

Congratulations to the inductees to the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame. But special congrats to Ma’a Tanuvasa since I was able to watch him play for the Warriors. Chris Naeole too as the Warriors’ offensive line coach. Thank you guys for giving to the Hawaii football program. Also wishing the Hawaii Bowl lots of success. The rain, however, will keep me from tonight’s game. Can’t take the risk of getting sick at my age.

I know a lot’s of you in Hawaii don’t like BYU football!. Because they’re always beat Hawaii big times!. BYU Coach Edwards wasn’t only a Head football coach. But a great person in his whole life!. Just like Norm Chow he had the greatest quarterbacks in BYU and USC!. But never had a chance to show great he was at UH!. I CAN’T WAIT UNTIL NEXT SEASON!. When University of Hawaii football plays BYU!. I hope their be ready for them? Because they’re return everybody next year!

Rolo attended last night’s banquet. It’s a weird rule. He can attend the banquet but not watch tonight’s game. It’s weird because this is an open NCAA recruiting period.

JUST NO LET DA GREEDY NCAA GUYS GET A HOLD OF THIS EVENT IN ANY FORM, SHAPE, OR MATTER.

I hope the turnout is very good. $9 – $15 ticket price is great. If we didn’t have MBB tickets, we would go. http://www.polynesianbowl.com/the-game

Windy like heck.. might really kick up a storm at the stadium.

I hope DT Dillan Misa’alefua is one of the eight tripping this weekend and commits to the Warriors. Just watched his video and he is a beast at 6-6/300. Has quickness and power. I can just see him lining up alongside Viane Moala.

This is not a football question but watching basketball game over the season I don’t understand why they play #23, Drammeh(sp?). He plays defense with arms down and is slow to get position playing man.

Need a RB and another OT.

  14. islandman January 21, 2017 10:07 pm

Sheriff, #23, is recovering from a pinched nerve in this shoulder.

  15. mryoshi13 January 22, 2017 5:34 am

Wow, zero commitments from Polynesian Bowl for UH? Bummer.

  16. Tempmanoa January 22, 2017 8:05 am

Speaking of Polynesians, I hope the spirit of the banquet being held here helps us recruit a few more local players. This class looks like one of the fewest commits to UH from Hawaii high school players we are targeting. Mainland recruiters in greater numbers than ever seem to be grabbing all of our best players this year. Au Hoy may be our last chance to keep one home. I think Rolo needs one more year to show his stuff, get some transfers home, and strengthen relationships.

I totally subscribe to the guideline-only want people who want to be here. No big deal but a lot of guys go off to school and a) don’t play a lot and b) play for mediocre teams. So be it the Warriors are on the rise and this class will be fine. GoWarriors!!!

  18. wayoutwest January 22, 2017 10:40 am

Why hasn’t anyone in the local media confirmed Blessman Taala’s commitment to Hawaii yet?

  19. Buffoman January 22, 2017 10:58 am

#17 I agree. If they want to leave that’s fine.

  20. burro sabio January 22, 2017 11:04 am

If UH only recruited locally we wouldn’t have had the pleasure of watching athletes like MD50 and FUHA.

#18 – obviously because the local media hasn’t confirmed it yet.

  21. Buffoman January 22, 2017 11:14 am

Is Kennedy still a UH student, or has he transferred to another school in an attempt to play again?

  22. Stephen Tsai January 22, 2017 11:32 am

    Buffoman:
Haven’t checked his status lately, but I think he needs to graduate to be able to transfer to another D-I school.
