Warrior fundraiser, UH up to No. 5

Congrats to Mark Presho, the alumni winner this season for MVB
Gave a very moving speech, including saying that Hawaii men’s volleyball is relevant and that it is relevant to the sport. Felt this team had a chance to contend for a national title this season.
always nice to see some former players, including Brian Beckwith married to Juliana Sanders.
other pictures below of Kupono Fey, mom Shelley Kahuanui-Fey and Presho
Wade with Presho, Manny Relator and Beckwith
and Jennings with Manny
Team has practice 9-11 this morning, leaving for mainland this afternoon
Not sure how much money was raised but had about 400 in the SSC with a silent and live action. Billy V is always entertaining.

I dunno how Pepperdine, losing to previous #9 Lewis, yet beating previous #8 Loyola drops them 2 places, while Long Beach, losing to unranked USC, drops them only 1 place. Thought for sure we would be ranked #4 above LBSU. Oh well. We didn’t really have a significant win (over a ranked opponent) this past weekend anyway so I guess that is probably the reason.

    1 Ohio State (24) 360 5-0 1
    2 UCLA 336 4-1 2
    3 BYU 303 4-1 4
    4 Long Beach State 262 4-1 3
    5 Hawai’i 256 5-0 6
    6 UC Irvine 237 5-1 7
    7 Pepperdine 223 2-1 5
    8 Lewis 211 3-1 9
    9 Loyola-Chicago 167 3-2 8
    10 Stanford 144 3-2 10
    11 George Mason 104 3-1 11
    12 UC Santa Barbara 90 4-1 12
    13 Ball State 78 4-1 15
    14 CSUN 57 6-1 13
    15 Penn State 31 2-2 14
Others receiving votes and listed on two or more ballots: Southern California 13; California Baptist 7

Thanks for posting the poll At practice and had issue with posting the link
as for the poll, it’s coaches voting early in the season and the points fall where they fall. doesn’t really mean much at this point.

to continue the discussion on the video challenge from last Friday.
for those who missed the previous thread’s comment, the ref’s monitor went black so he walked over to TV to use theirs.
someone said that Wade looked to TV guys as to whether to challenge. Asked Wade this morning about that since I didn’t believe that’s what happened. He said the challenge had already be made based on what his players said. He would like the protocol to be that of the FIVB which the replay is shown on the arena’s screen and coaches can then decide to challenge. which is not the collegiate protocol currently. He said he tells his players to immediately let him know if he should challenge and you usually see the captains do so, friday for sure Franciskovic gestured by making a C with his hand.
as for the challenge that GCU lost at the end of Set 3. can only pass along what I was told since I never saw the replay. they said the video was inconclusive which means the original call stood, and that was GCU player hitting the antenna first, not the UH block of the attack.

Warriors leaving this afternoon. They are allowed to take 14.

I am disgustingly prideful of my role in recruiting Brian Beckwith…even willing to post it on the blog!

It was getting late in the recruiting season and UH was not considering Brian. But I saw an article on the internet mentioning Brian’s interest in Hawaii. I forwarded that article to the volleyball office and received a nice thank-you from the assistant coach (senior moment…help me out) who later coached at Hawaii-Hilo and recently left there. They indeed followed up and the rest is already history. Just an example of how we “small potatoes” supporters CAN make a difference. I’m positive my experience can be echoed many times over by others.

Hey! Make it a great week everyone!

    5. I emailed a link to that rollshot article to Tino also and i was just a youngin got a nice thank you email from Tino Reyes as well) instantly became a huge fan of Brian and the team

i am surprised Mamane isn’t going on this trip but I guess Kupono can play backup libero. Maybe the coaches wanted to take some of the socal guys like James and Brandon home.

By the way whoever runs the warrior instagram and twitter pages does a really great job. Wish they would run the wahine/sand bow pages also.

    @Warriorfan

You did good (#6)! And thanks for reminding me where the article came from and that the coach was Tino… // bg

    8. I’m glad that article got the previous UH coaches to notice Brian, sounds like maybe they wouldn’t have recruited him without that article.

Does anyone know if Long Beach will have a livestream of the match Wednesday?
Hope in the future the Big west gets mens volleyball matches on tv ( like womens volleyball) so we can see this matcup on the primeticket channel next season.

  10. warriorfan January 16, 2017 2:21 pm

I wonder if next season mens volleyball will do a home and away with the big west teams, so UH plays every team once at home.

  11. Cindy Luis January 16, 2017 4:10 pm

they are taking 14. Fey could play libero, and of course Worsley.
    9. pretty easy to go check LBS page and see there are no links for coverage, including game tracker That might be updated after the holiday but not yet

    10. haven’t see anything on the schedule. money wise, makes more sense to keep what the MPSF has done with 2 home and 2 away alternating.

  12. jm2375 January 16, 2017 4:43 pm

warriorfan – #10 – UH doesn’t have home and away games against BWC opponents in baseball, so I’m guessing that’ll be the case with MVB.

I love the thought of MVB not having to go to Provo every other year. 👿

  13. warriorfan January 16, 2017 6:48 pm

I wonder why the womens teams don’t do the same to save money, especially basketball.

  14. warriorfan January 17, 2017 11:55 am

Love the uniforms too, hope they break out the black or green ones tomorrow.

The formality of a UH announcement closed a while back, but still nothing heard from them. The hire was probably done before the announcement closed. Waiting for signatures from the uppers for Baxter, I guess. Typical UH.

    10. ” The Big West also announced Tuesday(5-31-16) that its 2018 conference schedule will be a double round-robin format comprised of 10 matches. All six teams will qualify for the Big West Tournament at the end of the regular season with that event’s champion receiving the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
That regular season format will give Big West teams an opportunity to schedule 18 non-conference matches each season — a 12 non-conference match increase compared to last year’s MPSF schedule.”

    new thread up for Tuesday.
    16. not sure what the ‘formality’ of an announcement closed means. there is paperwork to be approved and signed off on. the school year is 8 days old.
but probably this week. not sure why you say ‘typical UH’ Not like there was a huge rush on the hire other than to give Hall an assistant while he also wears the beach hat.
the hire was not done before the hiring window. As mentioned previously, they had about 20 applicants, and several other inquiries. The job doesn’t pay all that much. I think part of the reason Berg didn’t stay. Her businesses in L.A. gave her a much larger income.

    17. thanks.forgot that was at the end of the May 31 announcement.
