O-lineman from JC champions to join UH
Offensive lineman Emil Graves of Fullerton College will sign with the Warriors.
He joins in June, and will have three years to play two UH seasons. He also can play all five line spots.

UH media relations director Derek Inouchi called yesterday, accusing me of not reading his football releases.
I said, of course, I read his releases, every last one of them.
He said if I read his releases, why didn’t I write about UH’s future football schedule? He said they were included in the Hawaii Bowl release he distributed to the media four weeks ago.
So I told him there was a simple explanation: I didn’t read his release.

The out of conference schedule seems much more manageable going forward (both opponent and distance traveled in period of time )

I think scheduling more PAC-12 teams bodes well if there is future expansion.
And since we played in Australia last year, it wouldn’t surprise me if Maitlin is working future out of country match-ups.

Norm Chow could still be Hawaii’s coach if he had a non-conference schedule like this.
It’s a schedule where you don’t automatically concede three losses.

Scheduling PAC-12 opponents will have no effect on chances of getting in if expansion were to occur. The only way UH will have a chance if they start winning those games and get back to the 2006/2007 success along with proving they can grab the TV audiences in the pacific (Australia/NZ, Asia) and of course the mainland.
The sooner the date of the 2017 UMass game is settled the better, as it seems a lot of us are already looking to make travel plans for that game. Personally I would like to see it moved one or two weeks earlier.

They wanted to move the UMass game to Week Zero. But that exemption only applies to teams playing in Hawaii. For instance, BYU could play a Week Zero game, here or in Provo, but UCLA can’t.

Hawai‘i averaged 3,644 per contest last season, second nationally to BYU
(3,980). UH drew a season-high 5,436 against No. 1 UCLA. In 2015, Hawai‘i regained the title as national attendance leader (3,671), posting the program’s highest average since 2006 (4,231). BYU led the nation in attendance from 2012-14. Previously, UH was the nation’s leader for 17 straight seasons from 1995-2011.

If they don’t move the UMass game to September, UH will be looking at three open dates in that month (Sept. 16, 23, 30). Would the Mountain West accommodate UH to fill two of those dates? Not likely. For 2016, conference play did not start until Oct. 1.
Something’s gotta give, unless UH is OK with having two bye weeks (16th, 23rd) early in the season.
Recruiting. It dawned upon me that the dead period ends on Jan 11 and not on Jan 4, 5 or 6 because it would be “unfair” to the two schools whose coaching staff is busy preparing for the national championship game on Jan 9. So all the other schools have to wait to begin scheduling on-campus visits. I feel rather than extending the dead period, the NCAA should consider scheduling the national championship game in the first week of the year.

Minnesota has reached out to Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo about their head coaching job.
Also, Minnesota KSTP reports Minnesota AD Mark Coyle met with Western Michigan head coach P.J. Fleck on Wednesday.
ESPN: Chris Berman will step down as host of ESPN’s Sunday and Monday NFL preview shows, its NFL Draft coverage and the MLB Home Run Derby, reports John Ourand of Sports Business Journal. An original ESPNer, Ourand notes Berman, 61, has signed a new contract that will keep him with the Worldwide Leader in a reduced role.
About Ken …
Minnesota has reached out to Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo. This would be the second time Minnesota has reached out to Ken, in fact, it is our understanding Minnesota previously offered Niumatalolo the head job a few years back (when Jerry Kill was hired).
If things continue as they have, the Warriors may once again become the team that none of the big schools want to play at Aloha Stadium. Happened with JJ and it might happen again.

Hmmmn, Ole Kenny in the land of Paul Bunyan?? Ordinarily, I would say peeshawwww–but here are a couple of items, that might make the Radford sole take a second look:
One, by all accounts he has reached his ceiling, in terms of football accomplishments–that is to say, I am sure he often wonders how he would do in the straight college football world, playing in a major conference;
Two, his last salary was around 1.6, the last HC at Minnesota had a total comp package of almost 2.5 million;
Three; Minnesota is a good employer and the only college game in town or the state. Further, it is very well footed from a financial perspective, with an endowment of over 3.2 billion or what is about 11 times what UH has in its cookie jar; and finally,
Four, ten years is a huge run in football years, and well, if he wanted to make a change and has the yearning for a new challenge, this would not be a bad one, as the expectations are measured and many of the other ancillary ingredients are present.
But as always, just my lousy halawa two cents, which would be actually less than once cents….

Has the possibility of moving Western Carolina from Sep. 2 to week zero and playing UMass on Sep. 2 already fallen through. It would be beneficial if UH had bye on October 7, before the start of the MWC season. Probably has fallen through since it is so obvious and beneficial to us… 😕
SteveM: Can’t take a bye on Oct. 7. As it is, for UH’s purposes, MWC season has to start Sept. 30 because that leaves eight consecutive weeks of conference play before the Nov. 25 BYU game. Heck, they should try to move BYU to the Zero Week game. That would allow for a bye week during conference play.

A-House. There are nine weekends from Sept. 30 to Nov. 25. I just figured if BYU is moved to Week Zero, that will allow UH to play eight conference games in nine weeks, with the possibility of a bye week during that span. The alternative is eight consecutive weeks of MWC play, followed by BYU. I’m assuming Dec. 2 is when the MWC championship game would be scheduled.
Anyway, probably much to do about nothing since “we” have no control over scheduling. Fun to speculate, though.
#28 – boola. I lived/worked in the Rochester/MSP area in the 80’s.
Enjoyed life there; very nice people/low crime rate.
However, the “demographics” has changed/changing, and things appear to be not
the same as it was; but nonetheless, better than many metropolitan areas.
As for Kenny – “local boy makes good”. Yeah, I agree – 10 years is a long time in the
coaching business. A change in scenery, and 2.5 mill$ is enticing. (Don’t know what Kenny
was offered by BYU, a year or two ago.)
During their bowl game the announcers were saying Navy’s Ken Niumatalolo was the highest paid government employee at something like 4 times what the President gets paid. He would be fun to follow in the Big Ten but has also stated his next job would be in retirement.

That’s a better idea, Clyde. I wonder how UMass got placed after the MWC season start. In any event, it would be better if UMass could move into September. The prospect of BYU being the week zero opener should fill the stadium!

I am also wondering if we are going to have a 13th game this year.
If I recall correctly, the last time we had a 12 game season was when we turned down a last minute $500,000 certain-loss road game. I suspected it was to have a chance for a 6-6 record for the Hawaii Bowl under Norm Chow. The time before that was a 12 game perfect record in 2007 that took us to the Sugar Bowl.
I hope that kind of optimism does not mean discarding the revenue from one home game. Just my opinion as a guy who buys season tickets regardless.

Will he be able to get the same or equivalent commitments? What kind of offense will he run? Same? Can it succeed in the Big 10?

Welcome to the Warriors Emil! So PJ Fleck is going to row his boat to Minnesota after 4 years at WMU. We will see how that goes-the sledding/boating is just a little tougher than in the MAC. Teams in the middle and lower end of that conference can pop to the top for a year or two and be competitive or even Champs-sustaining that is difficult because the conference is dominated by Michigan Ohio State and Wisconsin. The resurgence of PSU and Nebraska along with programs that have been on hiatus i.e. Illinois Purdue Indiana et al will provide him with a challenge but at 3.5 mil a year well there you go-
Something tells me we will be getting a steady stream of commits in the next 10 days. The actual accounting of current years will be somewhat difficult to follow for example Tago is not an initial and a couple others are grey shirts so I am not sure anybody can keep track outside of the staff. 2 Qbs left the program along with medical retirement Clements so that is 3 freed up for internal usage, I do understand a walk on has to be with the team 2 years before getting scholarshipped to avoid being considered an initial. Roughly by my count we have somewhere between 12 and 15 scholarships left (I think!). GoWarriors!!!!!!
