Linebackers coach Sean Duggan (with an assist from Patrice Vettori) won the Golden Apron for providing the best Sunday meal during the season.

“I took points off for tardiness,” Nick Rolovich said, “but I think the bacon-wrapped scallops put him over the top.”

Congrats to Jim Leahey, who is returning to UH baseball as the radio play-by-play announcer.

Leahey is the master of the details. He paints the image, treats each game as a self-contained episode, and gives the score frequently. Those are the basics for listeners stuck in traffic.

Smart students. The men’s volleyball team had even higher grades but they were not in their season yet and don’t have to wear helmets and don’t get hits to the head.

Great job in skool! Looking for some recruiting news. Also Stephen that cryptic message regarding BSU receivers/passing game coordinator. Mark my words I give that coach 2 seasons before they fall from the top of the MW. SDSU WYOMING and the WARRIORS are close to making a statement in that conference-

Top 5! Happy New Year to all! May it be filled with blessings for you and yours.

  5. A-House January 3, 2017 12:26 pm

I like Rolo’s self critique of his progam – must look at all if you want to improve it from himself, to his coaches, and players.

  6. A-House January 3, 2017 12:33 pm

someday, someone will ask for all the criticisms of UH football and suggestions on how to improve it

it will be time consuming to gather, collate, select best course(s) of action, implement, and get feed back [ most important to know if moving in right direction ]

included must be a way to get the youngest fan to like UH football — us oldies got only a few more years, maybe a decade, before leaving planet earth

don’t repeat Boyd Gaming mistake of counting on a fixed generation of gamblers and watch this group grow smaller each year without seeking ways to get the next generation to want their hotel/casino to spend their $$$

what will be the spark for UH football?

  7. A-House January 3, 2017 12:42 pm

    ST:

    your survey includes/excludes recent graduates?

there is a decline in number with 3.0 or better and 3.5 or higher

Sunday meal is for coaches only? bacon-wrapped scallops, eh?

  8. A-House January 3, 2017 12:49 pm

kudos to all football players who put “student” before athlete and coaches for checking class attendance

there is some wicked virus going around every where — I blame the Russians for dispersing virus in the air stream where it is carried over the USA – germ warfare at it’s most subtle form

Great headline (as usual), ST 🙂
    “Wise Guys”
Did you do well in English comp in high school?

I think Hawaii will be competing with San Diego St in the west division real soon. As for BSU, other teams in the conference know they can beat BSU. Wyoming and AF did it. For Hawaii, they have to believe they can beat BSU and SDSU. With Hawaii in the mix, it just makes the MWC that much better.

Looking forward to see what this team will be in 2017 season.

    —————

I read somewhere that some of the AD’s would like to see a group of 5 playoff system as well. If they can secure a TV deal, maybe. But, I don’t think the presidents and the ad’s at a lot of the group of 5 schools would want to give up the guaranteed money given to the schools as part of the contract.

With this current system, a group of 5 team would have to go 3 seasons undefeated to even be considered to be placed in the playoff. There is no way the powers at be wants to see another repeat of 1984 where BYU won the national championship. With the current system, just throw the group of 5 a bone and they won’t complain.

I liked that AD Matlin (as I recall) said in one blog Q&A that their marketing folks were going to look at how to boost attendance. I look forward to UH Athletics trying out on what they learn. The status quo certainly seems far from the best that could be achieved even with a 7 & 7 team.

    RE: #9
Ipu Man — I am not sure, but I always suspected ST read a lot of Piers Anthony Xanth novels. 🙂

I am wondering if we will have a 13th football game this year.
Advantage is more revenue for UH and one more tailgate for us. Disadvantage is no bye unless we play on Week 0? Disadvantage is we need 7 wins to make a bowl–but that’s not necessarily true. Winning the MWC makes that moot too.

Congratulations to all of the players on their accomplishments in the classroom. It’s nice to see a program that is performing well on the field and in the classroom.

  14. Richfromoc January 3, 2017 2:44 pm

I suggest the next time a food award is given out a picture of the winning dish should be included.

  15. Stephen Tsai January 3, 2017 4:21 pm

Men’s volleyball was 3.39 for fall, 17 players with 3.0 or better

  16. jm2375 January 3, 2017 4:38 pm

    Happy New Year Tsaikos!

Congrats to all the athletes on their hard work in the classroom and on the field/court/etc.

2 more days till MVB starts!

    GO WARRIORS!

  17. Boya_jr January 3, 2017 5:23 pm

At LAX, seeing a lot of Penn St and USC attire. Got my UH hat on. Would like all Hawaii fans to travel like some of these big schools. Rep your team.

  18. Boya_jr January 3, 2017 5:24 pm

When at Disneyland, the Monsters University hats look a bit like the Middle Tenn St logo. Blue and MU. Just missing my the MTSU

  19. Maddog50 January 3, 2017 6:03 pm

Boya_jr I rarely leave the house Year round without UH gear. Just laid out clothes for Florida golf trip……must have a dozen or so items with H ready. Wife says I’m obsessed-yep!!!!

  20. slenzi January 3, 2017 7:07 pm

Hmmmm, life cycles. Wags>>Von Appen >>Jones>>Mac>>Chow>>Rolo. When UH finds success, do we cherish and nourish, or do we let petty bickering and politics ruin things for the players and coaches? Right now we ridin dirty with Rolo, lets not drift from the path.

  21. Stephen Tsai January 3, 2017 7:30 pm

Stay the course. Always the best path.

  22. steve p January 3, 2017 7:52 pm

I’d like to make a comment on the UH football Uniforms. The travel whites are very attractive, I even like the white Helmuts (although the dark green is better) But I’d like to complain about the home uniforms…with all that Grey. In my view Gray is a neither here nor there color and is simply boring and uninspiring to look at. UH needs to rethink the home Uniforms and put some zing into them.

  23. NotNasti January 3, 2017 9:14 pm

    SteveP: Rolo agrees.

  24. 3-Prong January 3, 2017 10:22 pm

So the Power 5 wants autonomy? I agree with June Jones suggestion that they should let them go. The Group of 5 should take their ball and play in a separate season (competing with say baseball). I contend that America love affair with football will force the networks to negotiate with the Group of 5 to telecast its leagues’ games. I bet football with end up taking money from baseballs coffers and the Group of 5 will be rewarded hansomely. It’s better that begging for the scraps left for us by the Power 5 now. The rich have only gotten richer in the post BCS System. Whachu Tink? Can or NoCan?

  25. 3-Prong January 3, 2017 10:23 pm

    Ohhh,……and Go Bows.

  26. burro sabio January 3, 2017 11:23 pm

The bottom feeders in the power 5 conferences do not want separation, won’t have anyone to beat up on.
