Seems like coach is still undecided. Hope he stays for the current juniors.

I believe Shoji has already decided what his decision will be. He has already had time to talk to his family, but the time table is a day late on his arrival home. He probably has scheduled to talk to the right involved UH people on his plan of retirement/or not and if so (retire) the plan of transition. I believe the transition if so is more involved than we all think.

If he does decide to retire, i hope gives us time (like a year) to find a replacement.

I really believe Shoji has already a very (2) short list of recommendations to Matlin and the board of regents. If he does decide to make a retirement announcement next week, UH needs to make a decision who to hire (make an offer) quite quickly. Too many intangibles involved, transfers, NLI releases, etc. Not good but got to be real. The coaching staff has to have a really good idea of the team makeup before Summer is upon them. Time is critical because the 2017 season will come up very quickly. I can see him (if he retires) assisting the newly hires for a year or two, before stepping aside for good.

His record speaks volumes for his success of the “House that Dave Built”! I don’t think he wants to go out yet with how the season went. What could have been if Nikki and Annie were healthy all year. Also the perpetual snub stigma with the NCAA. I hope he gives it another year or two. He’s unreal!

Since he’s balking, I say he’s coming back.

  7. Andrew December 8, 2016 10:43 am

Cindy, what is your opinion on what you think he will do? I honestly think he will give it another few years. I remember him saying he wouldn’t coach into his 70s but I think he feels health wise and enthusiasm for the job/sport much better than he thought he would at this age.

Check out Stephen Tsai’s blog today. I hope Dave stays because he can still coach up a top ten team made up of “projects”, he has a very competitive nature, and he still has a lot of gas in the tank. Addressing the comments about faster sets, you need the right players to run that system. Noreen is great setter but the only people on the team returning from last year that have fast enough arm speed are Sibley and Maglio and maybe Kendra. (arm speed is different than arm power) We won’t know about the freshmen until next summer. Thanks Roofer, let me Know if you are ever over here and I will take you and yours to dinner.

I think the talk with the AD will prob also include who he thinks would be the possible successor. I’m sure it would be a former assistant like Wong or Sealy although Sealy has it good at UCLA and find it difficult to believe he would leave that.

  10. haleiwacrossfitter December 8, 2016 1:27 pm

fisher!! Man…I really hope that happens. So much conceptions.

  11. Maverick December 8, 2016 2:04 pm

I prefer Sealy, he’s got the resume, West Coast connections, national championship, HC experience, UH coaching experience, tie to Hawaii, etc. (also like how he convinced Shoji to offer Hartong a scholie). Fisher if Sealy doesn’t want the job (or if UH can’t land him). Everyone else I can think of, which is not a long list at all, is a step below.

  12. warriorfan December 8, 2016 2:42 pm

I prefer Fisher. Sealy expectations will be tooo high for him, and I think fisher does more with what talent he gets.
Big week for wahine volleyball, Hope Shoji stays but won’t be surprised if he retires.

Fisher has west coast connections, he is from Santa Barbara and is recruiting cali and hawaii girls all the way to Pittsburgh. He also has foreign connections which I think is vital for UH. He has no national championship but then again he hasn’t had the luxury of being in a pac 12 school with Banachowski loaded talent and great transfers ( no shade to Sealy) .

I would be happy with either Sealy or Fisher though…

  13. Rabbit ears December 8, 2016 4:11 pm

Wade and Hall would be good too I think. I doubt Sealy would come, when push comes to shove. I would pick the best recruiter. Can’t do it without the horses.

  14. John December 8, 2016 7:10 pm

#1 Sealy (if no can, no can)
#2 Fischer (great catch if can )
    #3 ?
    #4?
And so on … Who knows? Anybody’s guess.

  15. warriorwahine December 8, 2016 7:59 pm

doesnt shojis 2 year extension signed 2 years ago expire? even if dave wants to stay another year, will the AD honor that or say his hands are tied and dave is ‘scheduled to retire?’

  16. Andrew December 9, 2016 8:12 am

    15.

Shoji can pretty much do what he wants. If he wanted an extension, he’d get one with no hesitation

  17. Andrew December 9, 2016 8:12 am

    15.
He has more than earned it

    7. i honestly don’t know. I did put it out there to him that knowing how he is, that he wouldn’t want last Saturday to be his last match. but what do I know.

    as for potentials
I’d say top 3 would be Sealy, Wong and Fisher
mentioned before that Wade would be interested if UH was interested in him, meaning he’s asked to apply
Don’t think Hall wants the head job. he really is hoping the beach job goes full time and that he can concentrate on that. single dad, two elementary school daughters, it would be really tough to take the head job. that said, as happened with other hirings, he’ll have to apply just to keep his name in the process.

what Shoji has said was he signed the extension. doesn’t mean he can’t leave.

    3. it won’t be a year. if there is a new hire, they’d want to be ready for spring ball.

    6. wouldn’t call it balking. he is wrestling with a huge decision. he said he was leaning more one way than the other but he did want to do this all the right way, which is talk to the team and the AD.
