Mayo, others might be back this week

Question: Which players will return this week?
Answer: UH coach Nick Rolovich said more players will be available this week than for last week’s game against San Diego State. He said cornerback Jamal Mayo, who has missed the past three games, might be available to play against Boise State on Saturday. Rolovich said it will be a “game-time decision.”
Mayo said he is hopeful about playing. “It was very frustrating because it was my first injury ever in football,” Mayo said. “It was something I had to cope with and realize I would get better and get back on the field in no time.”
Mayo kept busy helping the younger players, including second-year freshman cornerback Rojesterman Farris II.

Q: How is running back Mel Davis recovering from his health issue?
A: Davis, who attended Tuesday’s practice, said he will redshirt this season. He said he spent 2 1⁄2 weeks in a hospital recovering from a non-football medical condition. He lost a significant amount of weight, and now is 220 pounds.

Q: Has the quarterback thought about using a visor to not telegraph where he’s looking.
A: There is an NCAA rule against wearing dark visors.

Q: Does Coach Rolovich plan on working with the quarterbacks to use their eyes to move defenses instead of staring down their primary target?
A: Rolovich said the quarterbacks, who go through full-field progressions in dissecting defenses, do not usually lock into a receiver.
Rolovich added: “When people talk about looking off receivers, it’s not eyes, it’s body language, it’s mannerism. That’s what you need to use against people, not just your eyes. It’s more than just your eyes. It’s your shoulders, it’s your feet, it’s your head movements. Even pace of drops can influence people. We have to be dictating that. We can’t be reactionary. There has to be some anticipation by the quarterback position.”

Q: Any thoughts about running back Paul Harris motioning into the slot in a five-receiver set to get matched against a linebacker?
A: “Yes,” Rolovich said.

Q: How come UH doesn’t throw more bubble screens to the slotbacks?
A: That might have been a concern four weeks ago, but not last week. The Warriors threw three bubble screens against San Diego State. “You have to look for specific looks,” Rolovich said. “I thought we increased our bubble screens last week.”

Q: For Saturday’s 2 p.m. game, will UH be switching sides so Boise State will be on the mauka side (in the sun) for most of the afternoon?
A: “Yes,” Rolovich said.

Q: Is UH satisfied with the production from the tight ends?
A: Rolovich is pleased with the tight ends’ blocking in the run game. But Rolovich noted that the Warriors missed five potential touchdown passes to the tight ends this season. “That’s not the fault of the tight ends,” Rolovich said. “That’s more the quarterback and coaching because we weren’t ready to get it to (them) when they were open. I think the opportunities are there. But, no, I don’t like it when we leave four or five touchdowns on the field at one position. I don’t like that one bit.”

Q: Although this week’s game against Boise State will be played at Aloha Stadium, does Bronco Stadium’s blue turf provide an edge beyond the normal home-field advantage?
A: “I think they made it an advantage,” said Rolovich, who has played and coached against Boise State on the blue field. “It’s nothing you can use as an excuse to lose the game, but it is a very strong psychological movement by them. It’s smart. It’s not only the game day, it’s preparation. The (scouting) film’s different. I mean, ‘Where’s the safety? Oh, he’s hiding right in the logo.’ … Then there’s the blue walls behind them. At the quarterback level, you look through and, ‘Where’s the safety? He’s in the wall somewhere.’ … People do very smart things, and Boise is one of those teams. It’s the extra they do. They look for the little details to try to do everything right. And that’s why they are who they are. Not because of the blue turf.”

Q: What is Rolovich’s philosophy on receiver rotations?
A: Rolovich prefers using several receivers each game. “I think it keeps them hungry knowing that if they’re productive in practice and work hard, they’ll get on the field,” Rolovich said. “It keeps everyone involved.”

Q: Does UH have anybody else, besides center Fred Ulu-Perry, who probably would be a starter or play significant minutes if he were eligible this season?
A: Freshman quarterback Cole McDonald and running back Freddie Holly probably would be in consideration for playing time if they were not redshirting this season. Also, defensive end Max Hendrie, who is ineligible to practice until next year, would provide a boost because of his quickness and athletic skills.

Q: How do Michigan and San Diego State compare in terms of defensive scheme and talent?
A: “I think Michigan is more talented player for player,” Rolovich said. “I think there’s no difference in how hard they play. You won’t see anyone loaf on San Diego State’s defense. They love getting 11 guys to the ball. Sometimes it seems there are 15 guys to the ball because that’s how they like to play. Schematically, they are different. But effort wise, I don’t think anybody could play harder than San Diego State, not that Michigan didn’t play hard.”

Q: What’s the best advice Rolovich received since the San Diego State game?
A: “The vegetation is in the valley,” Rolovich said. “Sometimes at the lowest point, that’s where you need to grow.”

Q: What is the message to the players following last week’s loss?
A: “If there’s one person in a 55-0 loss — a coach or player — that goes, ‘Well, I did my job,’ we have an issue,” Rolovich said. “Everyone needs to feel this. It can’t be, ‘I didn’t play, but I traveled right and I didn’t get into trouble on the road and I did my homework and went to study hall and I ate breakfast on time.’ No. Did you do something during the week that could have better prepared us? Everyone needs responsibility, and everyone needs to be humble about this and not, ‘Whoa, whoa, I should have played or whoa, whoa, why didn’t they do this, why didn’t they do that.’ If we’re not united, we’ll lose the last three (games of the regular season).”

a new day has dawned [ heck, is there such a word? ] with bright blue and clear skies

is this a “sign” that USA will progress under The Donald? I sure hope so, but have this gut feeling that our current allies would be most unhappy if Donald and Putin become very close forming a USA/Russia coalition leaving the rest of the free world behind — especially if Putin declares that he ochastrated the hacking of DNC and Clinton’s emails

just imagine if they recall all their ambassadors and close their embassies – “a whole new world” order is established

this can have a significant impact on all sports

me, I’m a solid independent voter who has great distaste for the DNC to purposely decide to shut out Bernie Sanders and the so called elite super delegates who jumped on the Clinton band wagon early and never gave Bernie a true chance to show his mettle — big bachi on them because, IMHO, if Bernie was the Democratic nominee we would have a different President today and the Democrats would control the White House.

    OF, no more politics!!

A-House I humbly disagree with you on Russia. It is not Trump’s agenda to move America to a New World Order but to bring the focus back to the republic. The Democrats were insistent that Russia leaked the hacked emails to WikiLeaks as an excuse to deflect attention from the truth to the American people. The speculation is the leaks were from the intelligence community in America that did not want to see Hillary elected because of her corruption and her socialistic agenda. As far as Sanders, how did we ever get in a position to consider electing a socialist. I voted Democrat all my life but after doing a lot of research on the Clintons my views changed to an independent voter. Now back to football, Rolo is moving this team in the right direction.

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
Will wait to see when our new wall will begin construction, how re-negotiations of trade deals go, how we going to deport 11,000,000 illegals, get our vets the urgent health care, create more jobs, tax the middle class less and most of all how we going to handle the Middle East conflicts. He said he got a secret plan for that.

Akamai…the vote was rigged…according to the Donald.

Nuff rant for today…we just IMUA!

Think the Donald got problems? Coach Rolo got more! Got to get our boyz ready to rumble! Did SDS expose our weaknesses? Was it just a brain fart day? How will we our team respond this week?
    IMUA WARRIORS!

Go Coach Rolovich! Stay on course with your plan for the program’s resurgence. The team needs stability, not a revolving door with coaches and switching schemes like the previous regime. People need to respect the process and let the coaches do their work in changing the culture. This is still a work in progress. Looking forward to the final three games and recruiting for next season.

Props to S & C Coach Bubba Reynolds and his staff for their work with the team. Noticed the lack of debilitating, season ending injuries, unlike the previous seasons.

#8 … oldtimer808…you might be right about that…FBI played a huge part in this election. Polls changed dramatically and the findings came way too late. Will be hard to know what, if any impact the leaks had on the elections. Then again, all speculations right?

I have been a UH football fan from Tomey to Wagner to Von Appen to Jones to McMackin to Chow to Rolo. I can’t say I have ever felt quite as strong a desire for any of the previous coaches to find success as Rolo. It truly would be heartbreaking if he doesn’t eventually find the success we all wish for. The SDSU game was demoralizing for me. It felt like a slipping back into the darker days. This Saturday will be test of the coaches and players in terms of their character and ability to pick themselves up. I don’t realistically expect a win though I would be ecstatic if we got one. So stay the course Rolo, keep believing in the team and the community. Several times this year already you could feel the sparks of interest and excitement about the team building in that old familiar way. Unfortunately the sparks got doused each time. One of these days the flint will spark, the kindling will light and we will have a fire.

  16. z November 9, 2016 1:26 pm

Not doubting, not hating, not loving, just hoping because I am a fan.

As for coaches, they come, they go, we stay.

As for the players I may be critical at times but I will always be grateful that they chose to play for the University of Hawaii. They are the ones I will remember the most.

Let’s go Rainbow Warriors! You only lose if you quit.

    RE: #15

  18. Balko November 9, 2016 1:46 pm

Arcumfortis, I wouldn’t worry about Rolo: Chow proved that UH will stick with someone long past any reasonable Mainland standard, and he has shown that he is at least a mediocre head coach in a very weak conference with only a few, consistently successful teams.

Football, and as a result, UH sports, now that is another matter: without heavy, consistent game attendance (35,000 and above) and a lack of deep pocket fans willing to donate unreasonable sums of money on a regualar basis, the AD will continue to stagger under the weight of the current breadth of teams they support. Sooner than later, some team sports will have to be cut, and due to Title IX, more men’s teams will have to go by the wayside to balance the scholarship distribution. Given that football seems to be in decline on a national level (see TV ratings declines and low attendance in both college and professional stadiums), the demise of football as a cornerstone of the AD may be on the very near horizon. And the three million the State has agreed to pony up for the AD may only be a small drop in the bucket this year (given the low football attendance numbers ) and every year hereafter.

As for the recent change in national politics, remember, Trump has about one solid year (after the three month inauguration glow transpires) to implement changes before the midterm election season starts in earnest. The party in power usually loses (a lot of ) congressional representation at that time, and the lawsuits against most everything he promised in the election cycle will drag out in the courts for years (the ACLU and environmental nonprofits are going to get immensely rich over the net four years). The powerful union/lobbyists at the VA will stymie him as they have every president in decades (For a point of reference, recall that veterans since the civil war have been marginalized, and our society has come to accept that as normal. Ask yourself why job preferences for veterans is a rule, and not a commonsense action: people only make rules when the behavior they hoped for is not occurring – in this case, people were routinely deselecting veterans in the hiring process). The inevitable slow, creeping impotence of the Oval Office begins to take effect soon after any president takes office. Most president’s find the only avenue of power is in the ream of foreign policy largely because Congress has abdicated their oversight in that realm since the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. But hey, it is fun to talk about every four years.

  19. A-House November 9, 2016 1:49 pm

    UH vs Boise:

if OC stays the course with the same routine, we go NO chance of being even close score wise

don’t count on the “D” as they give up way too many big plays, yards, 3rd downs, etc., etc.

btw, has the “d” scored this year? all is a blur!! last game, SDSU had 2 or 3 pick-6s — other teams scooped up the fumble and scored.

regressing, the days of UH ‘d’ being in the top 20 nationwide seems like a life time away — however, if memory serves me right, Lempa’s “D” gave up an equal number of points now and during 2006 and 2007 and 2008 — only thing was the run’n shoot scored more points!

  20. A-House November 9, 2016 1:54 pm

    Balko #18:

i remember the Gulf of Tonkin incident – I was at Ft Devens, MA and next day I got my orders to report to Ft Benning to start OCS

some say the incident was fabricated to get Congress to approve more men/material to the effort

  21. H-Man November 9, 2016 5:12 pm

Trusting the coaches to have a good game plan and the players execute. The defense is playing good and there’s enough weapons to win.

  23. Inyoface November 9, 2016 6:47 pm

The last 3 games I’ve seen UH play at San Diego, not one had been competitive. I actually thought this year we would put up points and keep the game close and maybe even stealing it. It’s disheartening not seeing a competitive game.

  24. The Flying O November 9, 2016 6:49 pm

Considering how awful UH was last year, I think the team is overperforming this year. Rolo and his staff are doing an outstanding job based on the team they inherited.

  27. aaron November 9, 2016 11:21 pm

you guys are nuts. both the UNLV and New Mexico games were one-possession games that were mostly decided because of bad turnovers late in the game. if they win those two games, you guys are calling Rolo a genius and suggesting he run for governor. The fact is that if they win 2 of the next 3 (which they should) they will have the most wins in a season since 2011. that’s bringing us back to where we were before the Chow circus. that’s real progress. everyone was suggesting that we be patient because Chow “gotta bring in HIS guys”. But guess what, Rolo may get 6 wins with someone else’s guys! let’s appreciate that for what it is and not get hung up over a middle of the season lull for a team that hasn’t yet learned how to be a winner because it hasn’t won more than 3 games in a season in 4 years.

  28. The Flying O November 10, 2016 5:52 am

aaron, I agree. Rolo is winning with Chow’s recruits and a JC transfer at qb who has never played a down of division I football in his life. It’s apparent that chow’s recruits either aren’t very good or chow and his coaching staff were unable to develop them, but rolo still is fielding a team that is competitive and exciting to watch (for the most part).

If the team still looks like this in year 3, then that’s a big problem. But gaping holes in the defense, mistakes on offense, and all this stuff is part of the growing pains of a first season.

oh, you guys expected rolo to have a high flying passing offense, a hawaii bowl berth, an upset over a formerly nationally ranked SDSU team, and a national ranking at the end of his first season with a team that went 3-10 last year (0-8 in the conference)?

sorry, man. not everyone is june jones.

  29. A-House November 10, 2016 6:21 am

from 0 – 12 to 9 – 4 “overnight” tells immense volumes of the HC and position coaches of their ability to transform a team with basically the same players into the greatest turn around in NCAA history

unfortunately with the current staff we will need to wait — 2 years? 3 years??

but, I cannot forgive the HC for telling his coaching staff minutes before the Sugar Bowl kick-off that he was leaving and willing to take any coach with him – bad part was the players heard of this and the rest is history

similarly, in our history, there have been several “bad” Presidents, but none like Nixon who betrayed the principles of his office – unforgivable!!

in the past, I have accepted the “national” election for President and I will do so again – however, the base character of our President -elect, IMHO, I cannot accept! never in our history have we seen Americans protesting the election of our President – students at Cal Berkeley has started the movement – until yesterday!!

it maybe a rocky 4 years for us and the world!!!

  30. The Flying O November 10, 2016 7:04 am

@A-House “unfortunately with the current staff we will need to wait — 2 years? 3 years??”

That’s about the standard expectation. And a realistic one.

June Jones turned around UH in one year, but when he went to SMU, he went 1-11 during his first year while he implemented his system and recruited his players. June Jones is an exceptional coach, and every Hawaii football fan should be thanking whatever god they believe in that we’ve had him for 8 years.

Chris Petersen inherited a pretty good Washington team but only went 7-6 and 8-6 his first two years. Now, with his recruiting classes starting to mature, they’re 9-0 and #4 in the nation.

Football God Nick Saban went 6-6 at alabama his first year (2-6 after wins were vacated).

Jim Harbaugh went 4-8, 5-7, 8-5, and then in his fourth and last season at stanford went 12-1.

PJ Fleck at Western Michigan went 1-11 his first year there.

So looking at the fact that hot first seasons as a first year/first time head coach in D-I football is the exception, not the norm, why would we expect rolo to be wildly successful and get upset at him and the coaching staff when they’re struggling during the first season?

  31. Ipu Man November 10, 2016 7:26 am

Rolo suggested San Diego State used white gloves
so the refs could not see holding easily. Hope some
kid invents gloves with electronic sensitivity that
automatically signals illegal use of the hands…
    someday. Sigh.

  32. Warpath808 November 10, 2016 9:47 am

There’s alot of whining about coach should do this or the coach should do that… it’s easy to talk like we know how to coach these kids into winning or build up a team from square one… rolo is doing the best he can with what he got and the least we could do is show up to every game show support.. There’s too much negativity especially for a coach in his first season… Turning around a program with such little to work with in one season would be a miracle… stay positive Imua warriors!

  33. cocobean November 10, 2016 10:24 am

Live aloha and play Warrior is the foundation Rolo is trying to lay this year. Simply put he is trying to establish guidelines and expectations that everyone – players, coaches, support staff, boosters and fan all know and conduct themselves by. He is trying to build an identity for the program, the Warrior way of dong things. Places like Air Force have the Falcon way of practicing or Boise has the Mustang way for conditioning or SDSU has the Aztec way of maximizing effort. Established programs have an identity and their way of doing things.

New recruits and transfers coming in to these programs should know coming in what is expected of them. When the arrive they are taught by the coaches and returning players how to integrate and adapt to the existing culture. These programs have the consistency Rolo is trying to build.

  34. cocobean November 10, 2016 10:26 am

Damn. I know Boise are the Broncos.

  35. NorthShoreFan November 10, 2016 10:27 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
Ipu Man…interesting observation about the gloves. Watching the game on the tube, we could see a whole lot of holding. I’m not sure why it wasn’t called but it seems a “good” team gets away with stuff and bad ones don’t. It’s always the perception when a team is getting “schooled” on the field.
The Warriors need to get healthy and start executing. Coach Rolo is puzzled as to why the team can’t come out and play with energy. It seemed the team didn’t have “energy” this last game. I would think players are jacked up for game day.
We played against big power teams in big venues so we should have been ready for SDS.
Anyhoo, if we don’t come out with our hair on fire, it’ll be the same results.
    IMUA WARRIORS!

  36. Maddog50 November 10, 2016 10:51 am

Had a chance to go to NIU vs Toledo Rockets at Comiskey Park(Guaranteed Rate Field) can’t say it! Really great experience seeing football played on baseball field.

Just watched BSU vs SJSU-the Spartans squandered 12 points in first half with 3 FG. End of third quarter 31-16. Broncos struggled with pass rush mobile QB and QB draw. Spartans had almost 500 yds of offense. Fake punt mid-field bad pass set up two early scores.

Emotion passion and execution will keep them in this one. Word out of BSU is they had physically tough practice to rededicate defensive effort tackling alignment effort-sound familiar? I’m just looking for the same effort as Nevada and the Warriors are in this one all the way! GoWarriors!!!!
