Game day: New Mexico

With two of the final four regular-season games will be on the road, this figures to be a swing game for the Warriors. If they win, they move a game above .500, needing a split of their final four games, to earn a berth in the Hawaii Bowl. A loss means UH will have to win three from this pool: At San Diego State, Boise State, at Fresno State and UMass. Well, you get the picture.

The Warriors face another triple-option-based team in New Mexico, which is speedier than Air Force and has the added threat of cutbacks on dives. The Lobos also have a backfield of four diverse talents — quarterback Lamar Jordan (4.38 in the 40), speed back Teriyon Gipson (13.0 yards per carry), combo back Tyrone Owens (7.8 yards per carry) and red-zone hunter Richard McQuarley (a touchdown every 7 rushes). The fun guy to watch is Cole Gautsche, a former UNM quarterback, who blocks as a tight end, H-back and fullback.

Defensive end Tevarua Eldridge and linebacker/rush end Jerrol Garcia-Williams practiced this week.

    Ekahi, Ichi, Uno, One, Foist

    Jamal Mayo still out?

  2. z October 29, 2016 11:21 am

Good to have those 2 back. We will need them. Our offense will have to score more if we are to have a chance. They will score. I am hoping for some turn-overs tonight.

  3. Warrior Dave October 29, 2016 11:21 am

Let’s Go Warriors!! Play within your assignment, wrap and all the way to the whistle!!

  4. H-Man October 29, 2016 11:23 am

Looking for Warriors to execute the run game effectively to offset Dru’s passing efficiency. Go Warriors !!!

  5. Inyoface October 29, 2016 11:31 am

    Score on the first drive!

  6. cocobean October 29, 2016 12:04 pm

I expect this game to have a lot of “chunk plays.” Both teams have shown they’re more than capable of putting up plays of 15+ yards. I think the team that plays the best bend but don’t break defense will win. I’d give the edge to our defense based on how they’ve played in three of the last four games.

  7. 3-Prong October 29, 2016 12:38 pm

Big Crowd for a Big Game. Go Bows!!

    Flashlight Wave huh?

  8. islandman October 29, 2016 12:47 pm

    3. They have to catch the UNM backs before they can wrap.

  9. oneseason October 29, 2016 12:49 pm

It’s great to have to worry again about traffic going to the game and Aloha Stadium parking. Let’s go Bows!

  10. A-House October 29, 2016 12:56 pm

key to a victory tonight is the “rush ends” containing the outside runs and the MLBers plugging the pukas in the DL

safeties play up close before the snap and pull back for the pass – they must read the QB correctly

  11. A-House October 29, 2016 12:59 pm

Golden Dragon theater had the Chinese movies?

original Palace theater sat next to Nuuanu Y [ makai side] on Fort Street and in a “puka” — not really a “puka”, but you had to walk “downhill” to the entrance.

  12. A-House October 29, 2016 1:00 pm

jeez, wish I had this recall ability when taking exams!!!

    too late now!

  13. Buffoman October 29, 2016 1:16 pm

Princess Theatre was where Kukui Plaza is today. That was a beautiful theatre. Liberty Theatre used to show a lot of Martial Arts movies. Saw some early Bruce Lee movies there.

  14. islandman October 29, 2016 1:22 pm

Trying to catch the UNM backs is like trying to catch the roadrunner in the cartoons and trying to wrap them up is like trying to tackle a greased pig.
    ————————————————————————————–
Remember Central Y used to have a nice field in back.

  15. Buffoman October 29, 2016 1:35 pm

Tonight’s game is important for fans to see where the team is. If they win I believe it would be safe to say that the team has arrived to a place where thinking bowl possibilities may be in reach. If we don’t win then we know that there’s still work to be done both on the field and “between the ears” of our players.

It is a worthy opponent. What happens will be interesting.

    New Mexico is beatable:
They lost to New Mexico State, Rutgers and Boise State.
They beat San Jose State 48-41 and Air Force 45-40.
So if UH defense keeps them in their cages, The Lobos lose.
    Go Bows!

  20. z October 29, 2016 4:23 pm

Boise St down at Wyoming 30-28 in the 4th quarter with 1:12 to go.

  21. z October 29, 2016 4:30 pm

    Wyoming wins. Boise goes down.

With today’s passing showers over the koolaus, there have been a lot of rainbows over Aloha Stadium this afternoon. Just saw a double rainbow over the lower parking lot – hopefully an omen if good things happening for the rainbow warriors against the lobos. Go bows!

  25. z October 29, 2016 6:24 pm

Vanilla offense so far. Nothing new. Wasted timeout then called a play that they were ready for.

  26. z October 29, 2016 6:25 pm

    No pep in Warriors.

  27. Inyoface October 29, 2016 6:36 pm

Why Paul Harris doesn’t start mind boggles me.

  28. Buffoman October 29, 2016 6:41 pm

Does “uh oh” say it all. 14-0 still in the first quarter. If we don’t stiffen on defense, it will get very ugly, very fast.

  29. Buffoman October 29, 2016 6:45 pm

The offense is also not performing. Whereas, the Lobos look like they want a bowl invitation. Their offense is as advertised and their defense is making stops. Hope we can turn it around.

  30. Buffoman October 29, 2016 6:52 pm

Okay, offense scored! Great efforts. Look like the offense came alive. Hopefully the defense will follow suit.

  31. z October 29, 2016 6:58 pm

Kory doing the job. Nice int by Trayvon.

Hope Rigo not hurt too bad. We really need him this game.

  35. Chopsueyboy October 29, 2016 8:30 pm

Does anyone remember American Theater on Hotel St. that showed Chinese movies?

I used to go to a private school, Reid Town School, and had the misfortune of going to Chinese school afterwards in the same classroom and same seat. That was a 2 story structure that was torn down to build the Pali & Vineyard Longs & Safeway. After 3rd grade, Reid Town School was torn down and I ended up at Hawaii Baptist Academy.

  36. The Flying O October 29, 2016 9:09 pm

UH is still a work in progress. Defense and turnover problems plague them. But overall, positive first season by rolo.

  37. MattyBoy October 29, 2016 9:12 pm

That had to be one the worst offensive play-called game I’ve ever seen! Ever!! So horrible.

  38. MattyBoy October 29, 2016 9:14 pm

It’s like Chow was back calling plays

  39. 3-Prong October 29, 2016 9:14 pm

On the bright side. 2 games ro 1. Iolani over Kamehameha.

  40. MattyBoy October 29, 2016 9:15 pm

What people are gonna want to buy tickets when you call offensive plays like that! So boring to watch.

  41. Inyoface October 29, 2016 9:20 pm

Hawaii gave it away. St Juste is not a starter.

  42. 808 October 29, 2016 9:34 pm

I was listening to the game on radio for this game. Veneri and Curran said on that last drive they should give it to Lakalaka until they stop him. They stopped him.

The next 4 games are San Diego State, Boise State, Fresno State and UMass. A split 2 – 2 for the next 4 games looks realistic. Let’s hope there isn’t any drop off in intensity after 2 close losses in UNLV and New Mexico.

  43. MattyBoy October 29, 2016 9:37 pm

St. juste hasn’t done anything! Regardless this Chow offense sucks!

  44. A-House October 29, 2016 9:55 pm

offensive and defensive play calling left a lot to be desired!!!

offensively – I felt like Chow was still around — so many up the middle – from the North end zone – 4 DL were a little on the “tight” side with the MLBers about 3 yards behind waiting for UH “up-da-middle” – what did Brain Smith see from his coaches box????

defensively – UH so called “prevent defense” had one or two DL or NO DL, but with many LBers support who could not penetrate the DL allowing New Mexico to basically run where ever they wanted to including “up-da-middle” with success

yes, UH scored 3 TDs, but the “d” was not effective like it was at USAF

if UH has a 6 – 7 record, several or many would hail this is as successful, but leaving to many “winnable” games going to the loss column leaves a “sour” taste in the mouth

if the players want to call this a “team” loss, so be it!

    disappointed!

    IMHO, a change is necessary!

  45. MattyBoy October 29, 2016 10:06 pm

    A-House,

    Spot on! Totally agree.

  46. SC October 29, 2016 10:10 pm

With this loss and Boise State’s loss, Hawaii may be out of a bowl game.

  47. SC October 29, 2016 10:12 pm

Hawaii needs to win 3 out of 4 games to probably get a bowl bid now.

  48. SC October 29, 2016 10:13 pm

Defense played well holding New Mexico well below their rushing average. Hawaii’s offense was ok but not good.

  49. H-Man October 29, 2016 10:18 pm

What a junk game. Play calling in the 4th quarter ,,,,,,, reminded me of the last 4 years. Disappointing.

  50. seewhy October 29, 2016 10:34 pm

    Ball security!!!

  51. cocobean October 29, 2016 10:56 pm

Give credit to the Lobo’s defense for this one. Their defense scored the go ahead TD and stopped us on 4th and 1 on our last drive. In hindsight you could say we went to the well once too often on the last call but again it’s hindsight.

  52. oneseason October 29, 2016 11:56 pm

At the end of last week’s game, Air Force stopped doing what was working (running more or less straight up the gut) and tried to kick a field goal. It seems to me that they went for the high percentage win. Tonight, I felt UH went with the same approach at the end of the game. Both approaches resulted in losses, but that doesn’t mean that they weren’t sound from a probability standpoint for both teams. I like that UH is competitive. I really liked the fake field goal. And I don’t think this looks anything like chowball.

  53. Ohana Hawaii October 30, 2016 2:14 am

GO WARRIORS!. Right on!. I really glad you guys are doing this year!. Because remember you were pick to finish the season in last place!. I gone to the Books Store to read up this year pick for the Big West teams for the men’s basketball pick? The all sports magazines picking Hawaii to finish 7th in confidence play this season. I would really laugh if Hawaii finish the season in first place again! I know that? They’re can’t go into postseason tournament playoffs!. Because of Arnold cheating the NCAA rules!. He should have known that the NCAA don’t like the University of Hawaii’s sports program at all! They’re done it to the football, basketball and the baseball program too!. They done this many years back to Hawaii!.

  54. azwarrior22 October 30, 2016 6:04 am

Disappointing is right !! We kept trying to establish the run when it wasn’t working. If they want to go bowling, they need to win 1 of 2 games that they will be heavy underdogs and of course, win the two they should be favorites. Winning 3 out of 4 is a tough order. We’ll see what kind of character this team has at next week’s road game vs San Diego St.

All in all, big improvement from last year, BUT we expect better execution.

  55. D-Bone October 30, 2016 6:31 am

I felt the Defense didn’t have its best game. However, NM was averaging 40pts per game and over 400 yards rushing. UH defense actually held them to 21pts and under their rushing average. 7pts from the fumble is on the offense, which stunk up the joint. The Defense did enough to get us a win, but the offense was terrible. The playcalling was down right horrible. UH has so many weapons, but never seem to use any of them….Harris, Unga, Barker, Camanse-Stevens, Torres, etc….This should be the O-Coordinator’ first and LAST season. His playcalling is boring, predictable, and down right ridiculous!

  56. Ipu Man October 30, 2016 6:36 am

The wet weather did not help UH tho it should have.
Anytime you have rain, “I lika lika Laka Laka” legs…
    I’m sure Veneri would concur.

  57. 808 October 30, 2016 7:19 am

All things considered, if they can get to 6 – 7, it’s an improvement compared to the last 4 years.

I think Hawaii not throwing much had a lot to do with the rain last night. Veneri and Curran was saying DB had a hard time gripping the ball.

It’s not the turn around year some expected. But, I do believe the program is moving in the right direction.

  58. Casual Observer October 30, 2016 7:49 am

Hard fought game by two teams that really wanted to win. Hawaii had chances to take control of the game but couldn’t capture the momentum from the interception or the penalties that stalled New Mexico’s drives. By the fourth quarter, NM somehow figured out how to slow down Hawaii’s middle linebacker hence the gaping hole and the long TD run. But this loss was really on the offense due to the fumble and the inability to get into the endzone to at least tie the game. At least three Dru Brown passes were blocked with one near interception. They never had him rolling out…Other note is really bad attendance despite winning record…

  59. Pride Rock October 30, 2016 8:06 am

You’re 100% right D-Bone. Coaches have to evaluate themselves this week. Play calling was so stagnant, running a rotation of the same 3 plays. Sideline pass to Kemp, run Diocemy up the middle, and the QB read. No one picked up the OLB bringing the house play after play too? Gotta put Kaiwi Chung and RB to block on the strong side. FINALLY though they gave Laka more touches. His ability to get tough muscle yardage and then some is so good. Unfortunately, they ran the same play over and over. After a while, Laka’s presence became a waste. They gotta run quick pass plays against the defense they played. Running slants or some cutback plays would keep their defense honest because of their aggressive blitzing. Besides that, our player made some mistakes and gotta fix em. Not gonna put blame on Dru, but he gotta get the ball to the receivers without putting them in danger. If stops overthrowing them, the receivers will have a good chance to get extra yardage. We also need to clean up our 1st quarter. ALOHA and go Bows!

  60. DaveLetterMan October 30, 2016 8:28 am

    Morning Tsaikos!
Tough loss but applaud the effort by the team. Coaches and players just need to learn from this game and get ready for SDSU.
ST, can SA print the MWC standings? Haven’t seen it this season and would like to see where teams are each week. Thanks!
    Go Warriors!!

  61. Luki October 30, 2016 9:17 am

Agree that last night’s loss along with the UNLV one are disappointing but one thing you can’t dismiss is the passion and fight this team has compared to last year. Going 2-2 in the remaining 4 games is realistic, beyond that would be huge! Go Bows!

  62. Na Alii Pride October 30, 2016 9:37 am

#48 – What does Boise’s loss have to do with Hawaii’s bowl chances? If Hawaii goes 7-6, they’re going to the Hawaii Bowl.

  63. 3-Prong October 30, 2016 9:46 am

Eh what happened to the rest of the fans last night? Scared away by a little rain? Light Wave will have to wait. C’mon Man, R-U-In? hehe

Good effort against a pretty good team. Stay positive. Let’s Go Bows!

  64. A-House October 30, 2016 10:18 am

here’s my final take – UH play calling last night may have worked against a high school team

stagnant, stoic, bland, unimaginably simplistic – use the same or nearly the same calls and UH will go 0 – 4 the last 4 games.

last up the middle with Lakalaka reminded me of the 1st game against Colorado –
they had 8 players stacked in the middle and UH ran up the middle 4 times from the 3 yard line – came away empty!!!

    possibility of 6 – 3 instead of 4 – 5 leaves this fan dejected!!!!!!!!

Rolo may be doing good things outside of the game, but within the game – ah yayaya!!!!!!!!

  65. Inyoface October 30, 2016 10:35 am

Harris needs to start, when’s the last time we scored on an opening drive?! Dru seemed to have taken way too many sacks, O-line keeps collapsing fast.

  66. Inyoface October 30, 2016 10:38 am

Defense also had zero sacks last night, defensive lineman is a must in recruiting this off season.

  67. SC October 30, 2016 10:53 am

#64. Read my next post #49. Likely 6-7 unless Hawaii upsets Boise State or San Deigo State. There are only 6 MWC bowls and it appears that Boise State will not be selected for a top tier bowl so Hawaii could be left out with a 6-7 record as 6 teams in the MWC have more wins than Hawaii.
