Regarding Cindy’s question in previous blog, #38, “where do you get suspensions and conduct?”

Jane Croson was suspended and her conduct was questioned.

  2. warriorfan October 28, 2016 7:11 pm

No Stijn or Fey, im surprised, Is Fey injured?

  3. warriorfan October 28, 2016 7:13 pm

Whoops sorry misread Fey, glad he is okay.
Surprised at Stijn not starting though.

    1. To add…Blunite is just making caveats for his/her prediction about UH getting the AQ/winning its remaining matches. Basically, he/she believes the team “as is” should be good enough to win the remaining matches. However, he/she assumes no major injuries, or someone getting suspended because she didn’t go to class/do homework/engaged in conduct detrimental to the team, all of which are unknowns and are unpredictable. I’ve made similar caveats in the past when predicting future UH success. These are typical CYA caveats so others can’t say how ridiculous the prediction is if, for example, Nikki Taylor has a season-ending injury and the team tanks.

  6. Cindy Luis October 28, 2016 7:15 pm

    1. Croson so long ago. not like it’s something that happens regularly with UH.

  7. Cindy Luis October 28, 2016 7:18 pm

    5. Still odd to bring up. Injuries sure but the other stuff?

  8. Maverick October 28, 2016 7:23 pm

    7. I guess he/she is being thorough. Yes, the items are remote, although I don’t think the intent to is start something up. Anyhow, after misinterpreting one of your posts, which I apologize for, I am trying to put a more balanced perspective on things.

  9. jmy October 28, 2016 7:25 pm

Watching the final point of the UCI-LBSU match, don’t quite understand why Gimmillaro had to argue so much…I guess he wanted the UCI kill to be called out, but everyone called it in (including the commentator)…His big mouth finally cost his team big time…Surprised it doesn’t happen more often…

  10. Cindy Luis October 28, 2016 7:25 pm

UH wins 25-20. impressed so far by Mol and Parapunov.
    Parapunov 5-2-9, Matautia 2-1-7.
UCI without its setter Saeta, using 6-5 Koubi from France.

  11. tongo October 28, 2016 7:27 pm

Wow, Anteaters over Beach in 5 with BG getting a red card that decided the match. Unbelievable!

  12. Cindy Luis October 28, 2016 7:30 pm

    11. yes, discussed on previous thread. he will not be a happy camper here next week.

  13. Don Williams October 28, 2016 7:39 pm

BG deserved the red card…he worked refs for far too long…

  14. Cindy Luis October 28, 2016 7:48 pm

UH had set point at 24-23, couldn’t close. UCI wins 26-24

  15. Cindy Luis October 28, 2016 7:49 pm

    13. we’ve long joked about the over under as to how long it will take before he gets one during a match.

  16. Cindy Luis October 28, 2016 7:51 pm

Hershko for UCI looking very healthy 8-1-13. their 7-footer Stadick 3-3-6.
For UH, Parapunov 10-7-23, tricky left-hander
    Matautia 4-1-12, Fey 6-3-15.

  17. warriorfan October 28, 2016 7:52 pm

Bummer about set two, is Parapunov the go to hitter?

IMO Gimmilaro was very lucky not to get carded against UH.

  18. Cindy Luis October 28, 2016 7:53 pm

UH changing its lineup. Worsley setting, Only starter in is Mol. Also in Gasman, Namahoe, Rosenmeier, van Tilburg, Rattay.

  19. Cindy Luis October 28, 2016 8:02 pm

    17. Parapunov took the most swings in the first two sets. UH relying heavily on OPP, van tilburg taking a lot of swings in Set 3

  20. kahuna October 28, 2016 8:06 pm

I’m not sure the lost by LB is considered that huge for us. Because LB aiready have a win over us they can “afford ” a lost. They still control their own destiny. If they win out they champs. Same can be said about us(meaning we control our destiny) but we already was in that position before LB lost.

Whether the beach lost or won we would have had to beat them Nov 4 to have a chance to win the BW.

In fact LB really is in a better position then UH. Let say LB loses against Davis. They will then have 2 loses but if they come here and beat us then then both UH and LB will have two loses but LB will have the tie breaker due to beating us twice.

  21. T103 October 28, 2016 8:09 pm

Ahhh man I didn’t know UH mens vball team was playing tonite, i had no plans, oh well. I wanna see how Matautia will fare. Excited for the mens season.

  22. Cindy Luis October 28, 2016 8:15 pm

Mol ends it 25-21. UH had set point staring at 24-18

  23. Cindy Luis October 28, 2016 8:17 pm

    21. i did put it up on the blog a few days ago and had a story in Thursday’s paper.

  24. warriorfan October 28, 2016 8:19 pm

I’d like to see a lineup with both Parapunov and Stijn in it.

  25. T103 October 28, 2016 8:27 pm

@Cindy, Somehow I just don’t get around to reading all the articles u write, just don’t have the time. My loss, oh well, appreciate all you do cindy, could be at SS watching the game. thats ok.

  26. kahuna October 28, 2016 8:31 pm

I’m at the match. UH’s “B” team is no slouch. They get Worley….Van Tilburg….and Rosenmeier. All three could easily start. Plus they got Pat Gasman…who was slated for major PT last year before his foot injury.

This has got to be the best collection of players UH ever had. Last year’s starting MB Nainoa Franks not even in the mix.

Only question mark is the Libero.

  27. Cindy Luis October 28, 2016 8:38 pm

    UH wins 25-15.

  28. warriorfan October 28, 2016 8:55 pm

    how were the warrior liberos?
I’m not worried about any other position.

By the way Elena Ogilvie is the real deal. I’ve never seen a better local high school freshman ever (can’t recall at all how good Aneli or Kanani were as High school freshmen though)
But Ogilvie’s overall game is so polished, quick jump and arm swing and she is Iolani’s best back row player too. The impressive thing is she already has all the shots , backrow attacks included, she’s not all power shots. I believe she is a good beach player too.

  29. warriorwahine October 28, 2016 9:23 pm

  31. jmy October 28, 2016 9:34 pm

According to the LBSU website, they are protesting the outcome of tonight’s match and have filed papers with the NCAA…and the saga continues…

  32. warriorfan October 28, 2016 9:39 pm

LOL what are they protesting the last point of the match??

  33. Cindy Luis October 28, 2016 9:41 pm

    24. discussed that as well to Wade since he likes both at OPP. he said that van Tilburg could also play left if they wanted both in the lineup.
    25. sorry you missed the match. was just saying that I had mentioned it in a couple of places.
    26. liberos were Namahoe and LaRochelle. Both out of Waiakea. LaRochelle is 23, spent the past four years in the Air Force. Thought both played well.
Frank is transitioning to OH from MB.
    31. Oh the drama.

  34. Cindy Luis October 28, 2016 9:45 pm

    32. from LBS:
UC Irvine’s Victoria Dennis put a kill toward the back line to put UC Irvine up 14-12, and that call resulted in an argument from LBSU head coach Brian Gimmillaro. He was issued a yellow card by the official for that argument, and was subsequently issued a red card when it was ruled by the officials that he had received a yellow card earlier in the fifth set. That red card carried a one point penalty against Long Beach State, which gave UC Irvine match point and the win.
Immediately after the match, Long Beach State lodged a protest with the match officials and will be submitting the appropriate documentation to the Big West and NCAA offices for review.

  35. jmy October 28, 2016 9:47 pm

If you watch the end of the match (after the red card & match point), BG seems to go from irate to accepting…this is probably the point at which he decided to file a protest…

  36. Maverick October 28, 2016 9:49 pm

    31. If the LBSU protest is granted, I can see a really screwed up doubleheader. Finish the LBSU home match in the morning (for what could be one point), take a bus to Irvine, and play the other match at night. In any case, I can’t blame LBSU. An AQ is on the line and BG needs to do everything he can to secure it…other than refrain from excessive arguing.

  37. warriorfan October 28, 2016 9:50 pm

So if the protest gets accepted by the NCAA ,they would replay match point for UCI at 14-12?

  38. Maverick October 28, 2016 9:51 pm

    37. Yes

  39. warriorfan October 28, 2016 9:54 pm

Glad to hear the liberos played well, beating UCI in four is impressive, even if UCI was without Saeta, they still have a lot of talent and added the number one recruit in Staddick and brought back Hershko.

  40. warriorwahine October 28, 2016 9:55 pm

    on previous thread 37.

cindy – “YES, the Sept. match between UCI and Long Beach State will be replayed.”

why is that? and is that assuming the protest is accepted?

  41. Maverick October 28, 2016 9:59 pm

    40. Read this thread: http://hawaiiwarriorworld.com/volleyshots/wednesday-sibley-out/

  42. warriorfan October 28, 2016 10:06 pm

Just looked at the boxscore for UH/UCI
Stijn had a great match, will be tough to keep him off the floor if he keeps playing like that, would love to see him and Rado both play at the same time. Rado okay debut too many errors but it was just his first match at the SSC.
Joe Worsley with 10 digs in just a little over 2 sets played, wow make him the libero lol

looks like Hendrik Mol might have a huge senior year, really hope so, we need a dominant middle.

  43. blunite October 28, 2016 10:27 pm

    28. RE: Elena Ogilvie – 5’9″ OH Iolani High School

If she played OH at Hawaii she would have to block 6’4″ opposites from power 5 schools. Even if her vertical is high she will not be able to maintain that vertical through 5 sets.

For example, Carli Kan 5’9″ OH for Missouri has 0.36 blocks/set with 16 BE. Although she has a high kill rate (3.55 kills/set), the quality of competition is questionable.

Kan actually does better than McKenna Granato, who has 0.28 blocks/set; however, both pale against Annie Mitchem’s 0.84 blocks/set or Nikki Taylor’s 1.29 blocks/set.

  44. rayson October 28, 2016 10:34 pm

    28. Both Evan and Mamane looked solid. Right now they look pretty even. Mamane looks to be a little quicker. Evan looks to have slightly better ball control. It’s still too early but I’m not worried about the Libero position.

Hendrik is the best middle right now. Patrick needs time to get back into his groove and I think he’ll eventually take over the other MB position.

Rado is the real deal. He has a whip of an arm swing and solid skills. He’s going to develop into be a beast. Stijn had a monster night. I thought offensively he was the most impressive player on the floor tonight. They both need to be on the floor at the same time.

Austin is going to be a great all-around player.

Jennings or Joe? At this point I can’t decide. I like them both.

  45. warriorfan October 28, 2016 10:50 pm

Thanks for the report Rayson. I have a good feeling about this team. Seems like our players have all improved and I expect the four big newcomers to help a lot ( Rado, Austin and Tui and Larochelle)
Rayson did Stijn hit from the left at all? I thought last season he was not as effective from the left as from the right, but with Rado now on the team, hope Stijn’s leftside hitting has improved.

  46. warriorwahine October 28, 2016 11:07 pm

    41. how does that thread address what i said?

    43. although she would have to go against big >6’4″ gals in the collegiate level doesnt mean her ‘quick and light’ couldnt be faster than them. height yeah has a natural advantage but of course the bigger the player is also slower and less mobile/maneuverable. even take that ridiculous tree 6’6″, 6’8″, 6’6 you can still smash through that.

elena ogilvie just beat the former undefeated and unstoppable #1 rank/seed kahuku tonight and they were bigger, stronger and dangerous girls than her. shes tayler higgins size and she was essentially the 3 best blocker in the team. elena can even play as an ‘attacking ds’ in the back row if needed.

  47. warriorfan October 28, 2016 11:13 pm

    43. I would offer has as a libero if Ogilvie doesn’t grow more. I think she’s just that good.
But if she grows to 5’11/6 feet, I definitely see her as a left side hitter.
An outside with her quickness and great ball control, makes it easier to run that quick offense you rave about lol

  48. rayson October 28, 2016 11:18 pm

    45) No I don’t think Stijn hit from the left during the match. I did see him hit from the left during warm-ups.

What I was hoping to see was Stijn’s passing skills.

  49. warriorfan October 28, 2016 11:27 pm

    45. Really hope Stijn works on his passing and left side hitting, since Rado is a lefty and will be harder for him to play on the left.
It’s a shame the men can’t do a 6-2 offense cause UH would literally be perfect for it with Rado and Stijn playing front row and Joe and Jennings backrow.

  50. Ashley October 29, 2016 12:23 am

wasn’t able to come back and comment about the UH-UCR game before the comments closed, but wow Hawaii looked great in set one, and almost disappeared in sets 2 & 3, can’t happen at this point in the season but somewhat understandable being the fact that they haven’t been able to have a set lineup all season long. but as a fan, only can complain about it, Hawaii controls the way they play.

the LBSU-Irvine match, wow BG’s outbursts finally came back to bite him in the behind, and cost his team the match. TBH i always thought Dave should be more vocal, but…..i guess now i take that back, love him for being so humble. pardon me for laughing when i found out they lost because of their own coach. not surprised they are protesting.

  51. warriorwahine October 29, 2016 1:25 am

    47. oh yeah ogilvie is only 14 and a freshman and she was that good at hammering the #1 unstoppable. she can definitely grow a few more inches in 4 years. maybe her mom feeds her miracle grow, some d power milk or something right? but most importantly, she is ‘quick and light’ and that will definitely make her grow.

personally i like someone quick and light rather than fast and heavy due to the latter being less maneuverable/nimble.

and even if ogilvie doesnt grow? make her a back row ‘attacking libero’ type ds who can do the pike attack or something.

  52. warriorwahine October 29, 2016 1:56 am

    40. after finding this http://www.bigwest.org//story.asp?story_id=19389 so apparently the conversation was talking about the wrong animal.

bg gets a red card and loses tonights match
another poster talks about replay referring to the ‘wrong’ match
cindy then says it has to be replayed

the beach lost tonight due to red card, now is hawai’is chance! no more sleeping, get ready for tomorrow and then the beach and then irvine and the rest.

dominate. crush. destroy. – not dominate. go to sleep. and sleep some more.

  53. Hot October 29, 2016 4:09 am

    43. I don’t think it’s fair to compare Taylor and Mitchem to Granato and Kan.

Not only is Taylor 6-foot-4 compared to the sub-6 feet Granato and Kan, but she also plays opposite, which means she has more opportunities blocking the opposing team’s most prolific attackers.

Mitchem’s 0.84 block average is so because she has been playing both MB and OH positions. Check her blocking numbers in matches when she’s playing OH: http://static.hawaiiathletics.com/custompages/Stats/Wvb/2016/plyr_8.htm

I’m not going to disagree with you about Granato’s pitiful block average. That’s just not acceptable.

  54. kahuna October 29, 2016 8:48 am

Not sure why anyone is surprised at Granato’s low block numbers. She is about 5-10 and does not jump well. Shoji probably have her in cause he doesn’t have anyone better and because of her live arm.

I do think McKenna is good enough for this team now but I fear she will be at a big disadvantage when we get into post season. Yeah…she can go off at any time and hit for lots of kills but she can also disappear too.

She is very up and down.

  55. tongo October 29, 2016 9:19 am

Watched the Beach vs Anteater match this morning on BG TV and BG goes on for about 4 minutes and finally gets the red card. Got to give credit to the refs for finally standing up to BG. It has been a long time in coming but he finally got what he deserved. Wahines catch a break but have some seriously tough matches coming up with the Beach, Irvine, Cal Poly and Gauchos. Hopefully lineup is finally set so the lineup can get some serious reps in before post season.

  56. tongo October 29, 2016 9:27 am

For those diehearts, the Beach official site is saying this about the red card lost:
“With the teams tied 3-3 in the fifth, UC Irvine went on a 5-0 run to lead 8-3 at the switch. LBSU battled back to within 12-11 on four consecutive kills from Barber, and got back within one at 13-12 with her sixth kill of the frame.

Immediately after the match, Long Beach State lodged a protest with the match officials and will be submitting the appropriate documentation to the Big West and NCAA offices for review.”

  57. noblesol October 29, 2016 10:32 am

#55. BG was chirping at Coach Hain as well, which the refs didn’t see because they had their back turned on him at that moment. The LB radio announcer even seemed perplexed by BG’s behavior and indicated that he also saw the ball that Dennis hit as in. The LB program and their team deserve better. Their athletic director would be smart to not submit a protest, but instead issue an apology.

  58. kahuna October 29, 2016 11:43 am

I wonder if BG had it in the back of his mind to file any kind of protest(whether warranted or not) just so he can get back at whomever upheld UCI protest of their previous match.

You should know that BG is the crybaby type so I wouldn’t be one bit surprised that this protest is kind of a response to the UCI protest earlier. I can just picture him in front of some NCAA committee member crying…”You upheld their protest, then how come you don’t do the same for us?”

  59. Cindy Luis October 29, 2016 12:32 pm

WarriorWahine I am not sure what your confusion is over the matches.

The two matches between UCI and The Beach have both been protested.
The protest by the Anteaters of the Sept. match (won by the 49ers in five) has been upheld by the NCAA and THAT match played at UCI will be replayed from the contested point in Set 2. UCI was leading 20-18 but after the timeout, there was an issue with substitution and it went to 19-19. My understanding is that it will be played from 20-18 with UCI on serve.

Last night’s match won by the Anteaters in five in the Pyramid was protested by the 49ers after the match-ending point came on a Red Card to coach Gimmillaro. IF the NCAA decides to uphold that protest, the match would be played from 14-12.
No decision has been match as to replaying the final point.

    56. posted that originally at 34 but worth repeating because it doesn’t seem like people read the whole thread.

    58. doubt if it was in the back of him mind but you never know. Situations are different, Match 1 incorrect application of substitution rule.
Match 2 2 yellows in the same set equals a red and a point.
The play-by-play says at 14-12. YC to LBS HC.
then 15-12 when point awarded to UCI after RC to LBS HC

Tough way to lose a match and pretty extreme on the ref’s part but we all know how whiney certain coaches are.
It will be interesting to see how The Beach regroups to host UC Davis today.
