Game day: Nevada

It’s the Mountain West Conference opener for Hawaii and Nevada today. Here are the storylines:

> It’s hard to believe the Warriors’ season started on Aug. 26/27 on another continent — a span during which they played only once at Aloha Stadium. That’s a long gap for Hawaii fans.

> It will be a reunion of sorts for head coach Nick Rolovich, recruiting coordinator Jason Cvercko, strength/conditioning coordinator Bubba Reynolds, and graduate assistants Makana Garrigan and Mikahael Waters. All were at Nevada last year. But revenge game? Not so much. Rolovich is grateful for his year under Nevada head coach Chris Ault. Brian Polian, who succeeded Ault, made it a priority to keep Rolovich as offensive coordinator. Polian was supportive of Rolovich’s quest to return to his alma mater. Reynolds was on Nevada’s strength/conditioning staff, but was not assigned to football full-time. This move enabled Reynolds to work full-time with football. There’s no grudge when a person leaves for a better opportunity.

> There was a possibility that today’s starting quarterbacks — Dru Brown and Tyler Stewart — could have been wearing opposite uniforms. Brown and high school teammates made the 4-hour drive to attend Nevada’s football camp two years ago. Nevada evaluated Brown but did not make a scholarship offer. Brown, who did not receive any Division I-A offers as a high school senior, then attended College of San Mateo. But Brown and Rolovich kept in contact after that camp, and the past May, Rolovich offered Brown a UH scholarship. Stewart was scheduled to visit UH in 2012. But he opted not to take the trip after the Warriors honored grayshirt commitments to quarterbacks Ikaika Woolsey and Justin Alo. Alo was at UH for a year before transferring to Mount San Antonio College. Woolsey was the starter for the first four games this season before yielding the job to Brown.

    Go Bows!!

  3. kev-1 October 1, 2016 11:50 am

The fate of today’s game rests on the hands of the defense. I have confidence that the offense can score points. The defense has been a real disappointment. Let’s hope the extra attention to D will show results tonight.

    GO WARRIORS!

  4. BigWave96744 October 1, 2016 12:17 pm

For those keeping score 4* QB Austin Kafentzis left Nevada and is a Redshirt Freshman at Arizona Western JC. He decided to leave Nevada when Rolo took the Hawaii Job.

After this season, the Kafentzis ohana will open up their recruiting efforts to find a landing spot for the next 3 years.

    Hmmmmmmm. Boolakanaka how you figgah?

  5. whitey October 1, 2016 12:17 pm

Good luck Warriors. Didn’t know the scenario, but reading ST intro brings up “could have, should have, and would have “. Hahahaha

  6. BigWave96744 October 1, 2016 12:18 pm

Oh sorry, here is a timeline for Austin Kafentzis

Oh, oh. Air Force for real. They can run and pass. Their defense pretty good too.

  8. Kapahulu October 1, 2016 12:44 pm

    Gameday!

This game has been circled on my Calendar for a long time.

I have been to this years games at Austrailia and Michigan and it was a great experience, but this game is different.

This is the first Conference Game for the new Coaching Staff for Nick Rolovich and it is against his former team. You know this game needs our support.

This is when the games start really counting for this season.

The best way that UH Fans can support Nick Rolovich and the team and the program is to buy a ticket, and come and support them cheering in the stands, especially this game.

    Go Bows!

No more predictions. Let’s just watch the game.

  10. Hilo-Warrior October 1, 2016 1:52 pm

    Howzit Tsaiko’s,

Its a evening here in San Antonio. The weather started to change for the better this week. I believe change will come for our Warriors as well. Roll made the decision to make Dru Brown our QB. A move that I thought was important for a stagnant offense. I also saw in ST article today that the defensive coaches made some moves as well. I feel the tide changing and hopefully our Warriors will be riding high again soon.

    Go Warriors!!!

    UH 38
    UNR 31

    Game Day!
Live Aloha, but time to play like Warriors!

  12. Inyoface October 1, 2016 2:36 pm

Why can’t we see it streaming on da mainland? What happen to warrior nation?

  13. Jack Flash October 1, 2016 4:04 pm

I have a good feeling about today’s game. Fresh start and renewed enthusiasm will lead to a Warrior win!

  14. cocobean October 1, 2016 4:15 pm

Lempa changed the edges on defense. He’s starting out in a 3-4 front seven look. He’s starting two DTs and one DE. He has the two quickest LBs wider on the edges and two run stopping LBs in the middle. New safety on the back end. The DEs that started the last two games have been replaced.

The O has a new QB and starting RB.

Hope the changes work out. Off to the game.

  15. Former UH Athlete October 1, 2016 4:45 pm

Not sure if anyone is watching the SDSU game, but the biggest takeaway I’m getting is that the So. Alabama QB is really good.

Strong arm, great touch and tremendous accuracy. Dropped a dime on corner route between the FS and the CB dropping back in his zone. Also threaded a perfect ball to his WR on previous throw but was dropped (wouldn’t have counted as there was holding penalty).

As for SDSU, it’s all about Pumphrey which is no surprise. Of note, they don’t have a QB that’s good enough to come from behind. If SDSU ever falls multiple scores down in the 2nd half, they will lose, however, nobody in the MW-West is going to put SDSU in a hole.

  16. Former UH Athlete October 1, 2016 4:47 pm

Oh my… SDSU long snapper just airmailed the punter and So. Alabama now in the drivers seat to pull the upset.

  17. Former UH Athlete October 1, 2016 4:49 pm

So. Alabama just punched it in to go up 11.

SDSU is done pending So. Alabama implosion.

  18. Former UH Athlete October 1, 2016 5:00 pm

    Ball game!

SDSU QB botched the handoff on 3rd in short and its scoop-six TD for So. Alabama

For whatever reason Rocky Long decided to hand it off to the fullback instead of Pumphrey in a short yardage situation. Add that poor decision on top of a slow moving time consuming drive when down two scores in the 4th.

  19. hitmanhart October 1, 2016 5:24 pm

aloha everyone !! its a Warriors coming out party tonight !!
hawaii wins by 20 plus !!

  20. Buffoman October 1, 2016 6:14 pm

We need to quit spending so much time talking about our offense. Or defense is still terrible. Tackling is still awful.

  21. cappie the dog October 1, 2016 6:27 pm

    Rigoberto!!!

  22. Bugaz October 1, 2016 6:28 pm

QB looking good. Making the throws

  23. Buffoman October 1, 2016 6:34 pm

We looked better on that series. If they can play the entire game with that kind of intensity we could be in the game at the end.

  24. z October 1, 2016 6:59 pm

Give that drive to the oline.

  25. Bryson October 1, 2016 7:27 pm

Ladies and gentlemen I think we’ve found ourselves a QB

  26. cappie the dog October 1, 2016 7:30 pm

    Somebody pinch me.

  27. wafan October 1, 2016 7:32 pm

Looks like Chow-Ball is officially gone.

  28. z October 1, 2016 7:33 pm

  29. Ki October 1, 2016 7:35 pm

    Can somebody post score please?

  30. Chicken Grease October 1, 2016 7:40 pm

Where are all the “Nevada 43, Hawaii 26”-ish guys? Hah? Show yourselves!

  31. Chicken Grease October 1, 2016 7:40 pm

    Right now:

    Hawaii 17
    Nevada 3

    I believe.

  32. Willie October 1, 2016 7:43 pm

Ki, it’s Warriors 17 – 3 at the half. Dru Brown 11/14 for 156 yards; 1 TD & no interceptions. Lakalaka ran in the 1st TD from 4 yards out.

  33. Ki October 1, 2016 7:47 pm

Nice. Mahalo nui GC & Willie

  34. z October 1, 2016 7:50 pm

    Good to have Meffy back.

  35. z October 1, 2016 7:52 pm

I have heard how Brown can extend plays with his feet and that is what I have seen so far.

  36. Chicken Grease October 1, 2016 7:53 pm

Think this is the formula if Rolo is looking for one. Nevada ain’t exactly playing sluggish. They need this win.

And let them try their hardest. So that we can see how Hawaii can win the rest of the season.

  37. z October 1, 2016 7:53 pm

Moala doing a good job too.

  38. Chicken Grease October 1, 2016 8:02 pm

Lakalaka. UH Warriors’ holy vengeance warrior.

  39. Chicken Grease October 1, 2016 8:03 pm

Ki, we have another Hawaii TD.

    Hawaii 24
    Nevada 3

  40. z October 1, 2016 8:04 pm

Great block by Chung to seal the edge. TD Ursua.

  41. expat October 1, 2016 8:06 pm

Gah. The audio stream died for me at halftime. No video. No audio. 2016? Not acceptable.

  42. Chicken Grease October 1, 2016 8:09 pm

Man. This all seriously feels so right. Keep on, Warriors.

  43. z October 1, 2016 8:10 pm

Hope Kory not hurt too bad.

  44. Ki October 1, 2016 8:17 pm

Thanks for the updates Chicken Grease. Appreciate it.

  45. cappie the dog October 1, 2016 8:25 pm

They’re doing this without any Nevada turnovers.

    Unreal.

  46. Chicken Grease October 1, 2016 8:25 pm

No worries, Ki. We must remember our Warrior fans are all o’er the world.

And guess what? News flash from Halawa:

    Hawaii 31
    Nevada 3

    Keapernick’s old team. Hahahah. Tool.

  47. Ohana Hawaii October 1, 2016 8:37 pm

They’re going to be a New Era now! Without Woolsey as the starting quarterback! Brown will be a new start and era for Hawaii football program

  48. cappie the dog October 1, 2016 8:42 pm

When was the last time Hawaii had the luxury of resting their QB in the 4th quarter?

    C’mon, Ikaika. Finish strong.

  49. wafan October 1, 2016 8:43 pm

    Rolo-Ball is home!!!

  50. MattO October 1, 2016 8:43 pm

    Dear OC Sports,

Thanks for not streaming this or allowing MWC to stream it either. None of us on the mainland wants to see our beloved Bows beat Nevada anyway. No really, keep letting “technical” and “business” issues prevent fans from watching despite their willingness to pay.

    Best,
    MattO

  51. azwarrior22 October 1, 2016 8:51 pm

DB is 14/17…future has arrived !!

  52. z October 1, 2016 9:02 pm

Oh no. Nevada making a come back.

  53. Chicken Grease October 1, 2016 9:03 pm

Ohana Hawaii, that is a big amen.

  54. z October 1, 2016 9:06 pm

Henderson and Rogers out of the game.

  55. whitey October 1, 2016 9:07 pm

Kudos to the Warriors. I thought the coaches improved from last game, but they have to make more improvements.

  56. Coach DB October 1, 2016 9:15 pm

Get some young players some quality reps Coach!!! It hasn’t been the case that you could put in some young guys while you have a lead. Stop wasting these opportunities to get some you guys some reps. The future will be here sooner than you think, Get them ready!!!

  57. z October 1, 2016 9:15 pm

    Touchdown Nevada. Too easy.

  58. Buffoman October 1, 2016 9:17 pm

We seem to be regressing. Can’t seem to have a consistent defense. That drive was way too easy. Looked like the defense that started the game. Game not over.

  59. Chicken Grease October 1, 2016 9:23 pm

It’s 38-17 Hawaii. What braniac thinks Nevada can come back from this.

C%rist. Some of you need to work on your faith.

  60. wafan October 1, 2016 9:29 pm

    Huzzah!

  61. Chicken Grease October 1, 2016 9:29 pm

    Final:

    Warriors 38
    Nevada 17

  62. z October 1, 2016 9:30 pm

Safe to say Nevada misses Rolo.

  63. Ki October 1, 2016 9:35 pm

    Way to go Hawai’i.

  64. Buffoman October 1, 2016 9:37 pm

It’s not about coming back. It’s about sustaining intensity whether you’ve got the game in hand or not. Competing at a high and sustaining level. Watching Maimi play they kept playing until the end. And they were beating GT quite handily.

Great win. Still need to work on tackling. O-line blocked well to run well.

  65. islandman October 1, 2016 9:38 pm

83 % completion percentage for Dru.
    Someone was streaming using periscope.

  66. z October 1, 2016 9:44 pm

    63. Exactly. I was hoping to see another score in the 4th quarter. Need to finish strong.

  67. Buffoman October 1, 2016 9:47 pm

Brown is a gamer. He looks very confident and like he is actually having fun. Reminds me of Moniz. That position looks settled.

  68. Chicken Grease October 1, 2016 9:54 pm

Oh come on, Buffoman. You fot he game in hand and you’re gonna “sustain intensity”? And risk unnecessary injuries to main, effective Warriors?

    Come on.

  69. Bugaz October 1, 2016 10:17 pm

Congrats to coach Rolo and the gang on a very good win! The future of Warrior football looks very promising. Thank you!!!

  70. Ohana Hawaii October 1, 2016 10:42 pm

GO WARRIORS! It’s really awesome to hear that you ran away from Nevada!. Nevada was favorite by 4. But it’s a shock for the team win!. But totally sucks about the attendances! Only 23,000 not even 24,000 or more!. University of Hawaii football games could be play at there Campus football field!. But anyway the next game is on the road! Go Warriors! Show what you really made of to San Jose State!

  71. Kanani808 October 1, 2016 10:45 pm

Congrats to the warriors good win. Nice to see sustained drives resulting in points. Dry brown looking good I believe he will only get better just gotta keep playing him he can be our future QB for the next few years. Bye bye to chow/woosley era.

  72. Buffoman October 1, 2016 10:46 pm

#68, yes. Sustaining a high level of play actually keeps you more alert and less susceptible to injury. Most of the first team were in the game. Ending strong helps prepare for the next competitive game. A game well in hand needs to end without a let down. Listen to coach Shoji talk about winning after he beats a team. He always speaks to ending well, even when the game is well in hand. Coaches always want to “play to the end”. That is my reference.

  73. H-Man October 1, 2016 10:49 pm

Great win for the Warriors. Dru Brown is Mr. Cool and Calm. Wish they had sustained their intensity in the 4th, or played some back-up O-linemen to give them some game-time experience. Oh well. Noticed that San Diego St got their butts kicked by South Alabama 42-24. So we get chance?

  74. A-House October 1, 2016 10:53 pm

    looking at the roster — many young guns contributed tonight — surprised we had a 6′ 7″ freshman DL from Samoa [ #98 ] playing next to a 6′ 5″ freshman [ #91 ]

freshman MLB and Santiago from Kahuku contributed

baffled on long yardage situation for Reno and UH had 4 LB on the LOS —
    future looks promising for UH

so happy that the first UH offensive play was not a dive up the middle and they consistently attacked the perimeter

well executed offensive and defensive strategies — well done, Coaches!!!!!

  75. oneseason October 1, 2016 11:02 pm

A very exciting game. In addition to the play calling and execution, it was great seeing good clock management again. The Rainbow Warriors need three more conference wins to equal the total number for the 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 seasons combined.

  76. NorthShoreFan October 1, 2016 11:03 pm

    Cheeehooo! Good win!
Was quite a day today…start with Food, Family, Fun, Friends, Football, and Fried Foods then add a bootiful day today…Then add a convincing win by our Warriors!…one fantastic day!

D showed up tonight. Reminded me of how our Warriors used to play D…with some fire and mean banging going on.
Run game was off the charts. DB can get the ball there before db’s could make a play. The timing was great. Got lots of stuff to work on still but look like we headed in the right direction.
    Believe!…Run the table!

  77. Warrior Dave October 1, 2016 11:07 pm

My 2 cents. Lakalaka didn’t play so much because Saint Juste and Harris were lights out. The one time we were inside the 10 Lakalaka was money again. Dru is the new starter and needs all the reps he can get. I agree with Rolo that he needed to finish the game. Offense and defense still needs work but a convincing win like tonight helps.

  78. Former UH Athlete October 1, 2016 11:14 pm

    1. Great win.
    2. UH has found its QB
    3. Can Rolo validate this win with a road win vs SJSU?
    – If UH can win on the road, it could be a spring board that boosts their confidence to another level. Luckily for UH, SJSU (Much like most of the West division) is terrible this year and is a very winnable game.

  79. cocobean October 1, 2016 11:40 pm

What a difference a QB makes. Ikaika, bless his heart, is a true Warior and lives aloha but the offense had a tendency to sputter and misfire under his control. For once in how many years did the offense run smoothly.

What a difference a coaching change makes. Norm, bless his heart, always had the best for the players and fans in mind but no matter h0w much he tinkered with the offense he couldn’t fix the sputtering and misfiring.

The challenge for Rolo is to keep everything in tune to handle all the speed bumps, road blocks and potholes that loom ahead. Tonight was just a successful test drive
the rest of the season is still a rough road to traverse.

  80. Aaron October 2, 2016 1:23 am

this is why it was silly to panic after the first 4 games of the season. people calling for Lempa to be replaced, questioning Rolo’s judgement for the coaches he chose to hire. give them some time to figure things out and maybe we’ll have more games like last night’s game.

  81. Maddog50 October 2, 2016 2:37 am

Asked Coach to get Chung some action-he will see more of it!!! To the naysayers of the D and play selection, don’t know how much football you watch or know but this outcome is no surprise to me. This defense will get much better in time and as far as offense, we’ll expect a full 4 quarters in the future-Go Warriors!

  82. Maddog50 October 2, 2016 2:48 am

Could somebody anybody download game to You tube. Please? I sat in the dark till 2:30 listening to BC and JV oh boy that’s tough duty!!!

  83. whitey October 2, 2016 4:58 am

Warriors you did good and exciting football. As far as high intensity it works 2 ways and can be perceived in a very negative way which will come back later to bite you.

  84. Inyoface October 2, 2016 5:27 am

Kaiwi Chung should always be in the formation within the five to either block or run it in.

  85. Inyoface October 2, 2016 5:34 am

I was listening to the game on the radio but Dru Brown needs to hold on to the football a little better, not sure if he’s carrying it like a loaf of bread when running. This win got me emotional since it’s been such a long time we got a conference win in such a convincing manner, hopefully there’s more to come.

  86. Maddog50 October 2, 2016 5:54 am

Am a Kaiwi Chung fan just like I was a Justin Vele fan-I guess I like the fact of some rolling thunder. Kaiwi is a devastating blocker and I say feed the beast! Way to go Kaiwi!!!!

  87. Postmanke October 2, 2016 6:54 am

there you go! momentum is on.

  88. Ipu Man October 2, 2016 7:16 am

    Great beginnings. Good win.
    But ugly in 4th quarter.
Got hope. But next week SJSU
not a pushover. Here’s their Utah
    game highlights:

Watching the Replay now . . . Halftime. Not quite sure just how Kanoa Leahy is assigned to OC16 jobs. Also, he was doing ESPN college b-ball gigs. Now nothing.

  91. Casual Observer October 2, 2016 8:31 am

Congratulations Coach Rolo, Dru Brown, DSJ, the O Line, the D, and the entire team! Of course you can say Rolo had the advantage due to his intimate knowledge of Nevada but it was Dru Brown’s running of the offense that gave confidence to the team and fans. He plays like a “natural” QB, fluid motion, good ball fakes, accurate passing with appropriate touch, and decision making that says “Stop me if you can, I am here to beat you!” His play is a continuation of his play at Arizona so it is consistent, not a fluke. The entire state is feeling good today. SJSU is certainly beatable and definitely will rely on a strong defense.
