Mane receiver

Even without a jersey number in practices, wideout Greg Zuniga is easy to identify.

“Ive had it this long for a year and a half,” Zuniga said of his hair.

Zuniga recently joined the Warriors after his transfer was completed. He had played at Long Beach City College and East Los Angeles College before joining the Warriors.

Zuniga is on a partial academic scholarship for biology/pre-med.

Then IW lead us to a come back win against UTM.

WTH? We shouldn’t have been losing to an FSC school, at home no less, in the first place. What kind of weak reasoning is that to retain a QB?

    IMUA!

  2. Boya_jr September 27, 2016 11:35 am

When will we have live steaming of home games? Could you imagine the outrage if there was a worldwide blackout of home football games at most P5 and G5 schools? The PPV model just dug it’s own grave. Question is, how much damage will this cause the athletic program?

As consumers, is there anything we can do?

  3. Warbow September 27, 2016 11:36 am

    Late question for Coach Rolo:

This may be more of a question for the AD but maybe you know. I noticed that San Jose St just scheduled a 13th game with Texas and utilizing week zero. Is Hawaii taking steps to have travel subs forfeited from MWC teams who utilizes the week zero-13th game Hawaii exception? By all estimates, San Jose St will make approx. 2.3 million on this body bag game with Texas and still collect travel subs from Hawaii. It’s a wonder why our program is in the dumps, we’re basically giving them all our recruiting money so they can improve yet we have to scape the bottom of the barrel just to hire a decent coach.

  4. Go Ducks! September 27, 2016 11:49 am

I’m pretty sure if you are in the mainland you can stream the UH-Nevada game through the MWC official website. Don’t quote me on this but I’ve done it before…

Cal has played against sdsu and texas both ranked teams! Thats not even a fair sample size! They barely lost to sdsu and won against texas. Come again please!

1 imua UTM played tough against cincy! Even read they had a 5 star running back, 2 D1 qb transfers and a bunch of other d1 transfers

  6. A-House September 27, 2016 12:02 pm

believe UTM had 15 D1 transfers on their roster

how many D1 transfers does UH have besides Ulu Perry for the future?

  7. H-Man September 27, 2016 12:05 pm

Welcome to receiver Zuniga. So he will be here for the 2016-17 seasons? Is he fast? We really don’t know much about him. Just found him listed on Warrior roster; http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=15420

  8. A-House September 27, 2016 12:12 pm

    al:

did your forget about all the “slow” running backs UH had back in the days of — hot dog, forgot their names – our first 1,000 yard rusher Albert Holmes — skinny as a rail, but ran hard

every first offensive play started with a sweep to the right or left — next play, sweep to the other side — U no, student body right and student body left

yes, a speed burner would help, but a cleverly executed misdirection play would have one side wide open – ala, the TE pass in the “flats” about 15 yards down field – wide open for a TD

and, eye believe the OL should shoot-out to hit the DL/LB on pass plays instead of back pedaling!!! damn be with “tradition”!!!

  9. Imua808 September 27, 2016 12:17 pm

Big deal if they have 18 D1 transfers. That means they brought 47 non-D1 players. Stop making excuses for a terribly played game.

We were favored by 24 points.

  10. Akamai Okole September 27, 2016 12:19 pm

“Gee, Doc, that’s kind of a hairy diagnosis.”

    “It’s the only kind I got.” 😆

  12. Akamai Okole September 27, 2016 12:23 pm

That means they brought 47 non-D1 players.

Not really. the 47 coulda already been there.

    (2nd Aha! moment)

  13. Imua808 September 27, 2016 12:32 pm

Did all 18 play? They were not 18 BCS guys.

Come on guys we got not only got Ulu Perry, but Posa, Gallup, Kema-Kaleiwahea, Collie, Rasmussen

  14. Jonj September 27, 2016 12:50 pm

And thats y Rolo should take all ur questions and opinions with a grain of salt! While i see potential with DB we dont know how much of the playbook he knows or if everyone respects him. But to throw IW to scout team is obsurd! Get realistic… rolo knows he needs to win now and give the team the best chance of winning. Obviously other QBs dont have it at the moment

  15. Imua808 September 27, 2016 12:52 pm

They have only 4 BCS Transfers. Besides QB cook, 2 didn’t even play and the 4th guy a senior WR #8 Brown had 1.5 tackles on special teams.

Please look up their team roster and educate yourself before anointing them on the same talent level as Hawaii.

    AHA Moment

    IMUA!

  16. Imua808 September 27, 2016 12:54 pm

Memphis, Marshall, UAB, Arkansas St transfers who didn’t even start. Meh. Excuses, excuses, excuses.

    IMUA!

  17. Buffoman September 27, 2016 1:04 pm

Our defense has started out woefully. I believe we had a better showing against Wisconsin and OSU last season, both of course in losing causes.

None of our defense efforts has not commanded the direction of series of game outcomes. Until that part of the game becomes a real priority we will continue to struggle. Good defense keeps teams in games. We don’t have that. Haven’t had a consistently good defense since Wagner and Tomey.

  18. Shoko September 27, 2016 1:05 pm

Ah so, Zuniga is what I envision Jesus looking like if he played football. If he turns out to be a hidden gem, we might have to call him Touchdown Jesus (no offense to Notre Dame), no?

  19. Jonj September 27, 2016 1:08 pm

Imua why dont u educate urself with the recruiting or lack there of chow did. B real!

  20. Aaron September 27, 2016 1:15 pm

Imua – all a point spread is designed to do is make people bet somewhat evenly on both sides of a line. How many people would bet on an unknown team like UT-Martin for less than 3 touchdowns and a field goal? People mistakenly use betting lines as a measure of how good a team should be, when they are really measures of the perception of the average gambler. The opening line for UT-Martin @ Cincinnati was also 24 points. Does that mean Cincinnati vs Hawaii on a neutral field would be an even line? No. What it means is that it takes at least +24 points for someone to bet on UT-Martin against average FBS competition. Cincinnati scored 2 TDs late in the 4th to put the game away, but they didn’t cover, either.

    But your opinion is fair.

  21. Imua808 September 27, 2016 1:18 pm

Across the board we are way more talented then UT-Martin. Unlike some of you, I believe we have the right pieces to do much better than what we’ve seen in the first 4 games. The right guys are not starting and of the coaches need to step up or be replaced. I named 2 position coaches who I feel are under qualified and it shows on game day.

Stop blaming the players and enough with Chow. He’s old news

  22. Imua808 September 27, 2016 1:23 pm

Aaron good points. Some of these guys throws out wild numbers and use them as excuses for a close game. It wasn’t close because of their D1 transfers, it was close due to my post in #20.

June and Mack were successful because they surrounded themselves with coaches with a lot experience high school or college or stints in the NFL.

  23. Jonj September 27, 2016 1:35 pm

Mack surrounded himself with young coaches! Rolo fresh out of JC ranks and aranda fresh out of d2 or3. The old guys had to be replaced (lees), miano if he wasnt gunning for the HC position mightve been a candidate. But ive heard hes not the easiest to get along with. Brain smith was the first OLine coach

  24. Jonj September 27, 2016 1:39 pm

Imua ur just one of those whos lost touch with reality. North dakota state beat a ranked iowa. WSU lost to eastern washington… there many teams this season who lost to a d2 team and theres been many close games as well. Right now we are trying to find those pieces to fit rolos puzzle. Give them time! These past 4 games we were supposed to b 1-3

  25. SailorBlue September 27, 2016 1:40 pm

Aloha everybody ~ With the game Saturday comes the tgate. We’re going to switch things up a little. We have a theme — FRIED FOODS — NorthShoreFan and couple others promised to bring their woks and blow torches if somebody will bring something to fry in them. Mrs. SB and I are planning on frying ribs. Shooting to be as good as the ones we used to get at Korner Kitchen. Some come on out and enjoy some fried food and friendship before the game. Early crew starts at 9AM. Hope to see everybody there.

  26. truegreen September 27, 2016 1:46 pm

#3 Warbow: Good find. MWC teams were already raping us with travel subsidies and then double dipping with the 13th game exemption which was meant to make up for travel costs in the first place. Now they’re going to triple dip?!!!

That’s ridiculous! Dave Matlin please put your foot down and stop this madness now!

  27. cocobean September 27, 2016 1:57 pm

Rolo’s first recruiting class hasn’t provided any immediate help for the defense. We lost starters through graduation in addition to underclassmen Nick Nelson, Jeremy Castro and Kennedy. The replacement starters so far are holdovers from Chow’s regime. To me the team lost way more starters and key backups then was added. This isn’t to say the current defensive recruits won’t help in the future but thy fall short in terms of immediate help. This isn’t to say the returnees haven’t gotten one year stronger and smarter than last year but having to learn a whole new defensive scheme is showing all their weak points. My hope is every week they’ll get more comfortable with the new schemes and better understanding their roles to the point where everyone is doing what he’s suppose to and Lempa is able to highlight their strengths and mask their weaknesses.

  28. (Jesse)James September 27, 2016 2:37 pm

    Good afternoon Tsaikos…

As Sailor Blue said, this week’s T-gate is a fried theme….fried kalbi, chicken, pork chops, meatballs, hmmmm….pickles….kim chee…. LOL

Hope to see all of you there. If you haven’t been, come on down. Food, Fun, Friends, and football.

  29. Buffoman September 27, 2016 2:56 pm

#25 I would like to believe that we can our foot down, but I believe that they (MWC) have us by our “you know what” and they are not about to let go. They know we have no other options. Unfortunately, we are going to be stepped on again and again.

  30. cocobean September 27, 2016 3:46 pm

#25, #28. I think Matlin’s best option is trying to convince the powers that be in the MWC that travel subsidies are a real drain on Hawaii’s financial resources which hinders improvement in the football program. His point should be anytime a team can improve it strengthen the overall image of the league. That the MWC should find ways to help all it’s programs get better. In Hawaii’s case a league member should have the option of taking the travel subsidy or the benefits of playing a 13th game but not both. That way it’s financially fair for both schools.

  31. jm2375 September 27, 2016 4:06 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos!

SB & (J)J – I can feel my arteries starting to clog up already. 🙄 I’ll bring something healthy to counteract all the grease (along with bp 😀 )
Wait, does alcohol counteract the grease? No? Shucks.

rolo, you hired a lot of friends as coaches.is it going to make it hard to make a business decision to fire a friend?

  35. papajoe2 September 27, 2016 5:45 pm

A-House #7, O-line may be charged with illegal man down field if they fire out too soon.

  36. islandman September 27, 2016 6:16 pm

Any sports writers in the 15 StarAdvertiser newsroom layoffs ?

  37. Boya_jr September 27, 2016 6:21 pm

#29 I had the chance to talk to the PAC-12 conference folks when I was in grad school. Talk about a conference that shares revenue equally and tries to bolster even the lower resourced schools in the conference. They have “management consultants” to help with sales/marketing/pricing and share best practices to increase attendance. I guess with a butt load of money, the MWC could be great too. I appreciate some of the help for the Hawaii Exemption but we could only wish things were better. Culturally, we don’t have much in common with the mountain division schools (see the history of the WAC). That’s where it seems the power is.

  38. Warrior Dave September 27, 2016 6:44 pm

Isn’t the 13th game exemption for an additional home game? Could the body bag game have already been scheduled?

  39. A-House September 27, 2016 6:57 pm

    papajoe2:

that’s where coaching and player discipline comes in – what is the allowable distance from the LOS before penalty can be called — a yard or too?

will the “zebras” have the same vision when an OL does an obvious hold before a zebra and no flag is thrown? yep, no flag.

test the zebras on how far they will let the OL charge ahead before tossing the flag

I don’t believe in the “tradition” that an OL must back pedal on a pass play – why give the “d” the freedom to advance 2-3 or more yards into your back field — yea, yea, I heard of forming a “pocket” for the QB to operate — that’s great if the OL can form and hold that “horse shoe” formation.

I am discussing strategy–out of the box ideas — hell, what was the reaction of the very first forward pass?

  40. Warbow September 27, 2016 8:12 pm

    #37
No it’s not a home game but can be either. In San Jose St’s case, it was a late addition road game as their 13th game.

  41. dopaco24 September 27, 2016 8:33 pm

    Warrior Dave #37,

The Texas game is on September 9th. SJSU moved its original September 9th game(USF at SJSU) to Week 0 to accommodate the body bag game.

  42. hossana September 27, 2016 8:38 pm

According to latest Bottom 25 rankings of Div. 1 schools, Hawaii is listed 7th worst in the nation and the Pacific Division of the Mountain West is ranked worse div. conference in the nation as 4 of its teams are in the Bottom 12. Massachusetts, which Hawaii plays in its last game, is 25th worse in the nation having come close to beating Miss. St. last weekend.

  43. tom-warriornation September 27, 2016 9:00 pm

what about that Slingbox device to solve our lack of streaming problem–can someone do it in Hawaii; and then send the signal to all of us? think Garret mentioned it the other year. Or how about somebody do Facebook live with their iPad in Hawaii; so that everyone can see it via Facebook?

  44. seewhy September 27, 2016 10:04 pm

    Hail mary to Zuniga!

  45. Aaron September 27, 2016 11:15 pm

For those of you who criticize Rolo for “hiring too many friends”… you do know that most of June Jones’ hires were of friends or friends of friends, right? To the point that he promoted George Lumpkin to DC and Miano to co-DC, made grad assistant Tyson Helton the de-facto ST coach, and hired Mouse Davis instead of hiring an actual DC when Lempa left and went with that for two seasons and only hired an actual DC because his old buddy from the Atlanta Falcons Jerry Glanville wanted to get back into coaching (the 2003-2004 defense took a season and a half to figure things out before they could stop anyone and had a converted QB starting at LB and a former basketball player at DT). He later said something to the effect of hiring his friend made coaching fun again and that prior to that he wasn’t sure how much longer he wanted to coach. (JJ then tried to take the entire staff with him to SMU, but luckily half of them stayed behind but that’s a story for another time).

I think most coaches who get hired as a new head coach will take at least a few coaches with them that they know or coached with or played with on their first staff. If you think a certain coach isn’t the right fit or isn’t a good coach, that’s one thing. but to chalk it up to Rolo being somehow naive because he’s a younger coach and he hired guys he worked with before is way too much of an oversimplification. the truth is probably much more complicated than that (and harder to have an informed opinion of). This staff may or may not figure things out and improve over the season. Some may return after this season and some may not. but with 9 games left? I think it’s too early to really know what’s what. It’s like people have already forgotten how bad things were the last 4 years…

  46. Hiloran September 28, 2016 12:53 am

Guessing issue with live streaming is a situation of charging for the stream. I am a PPV subscriber, I’d be pissed if someone else got the stream free. Thinking that Oceanic wants to keep their PPV numbers up. They must want to charge for streaming but MWC TV doesn’t want to pay.
