  2. haleiwacrossfitter September 23, 2016 3:57 pm

Ah man, too bad about Ruddins. Really wanted to see her play.

  4. haleiwacrossfitter September 23, 2016 4:07 pm

OMG. I HATE it when teams do the whole blackout gym and spotlights on home teams. Nebraska did that last year at the national championships. Talk about neutral site for the tournament. Yeah right.

I remember Hawaii did it back in 1997 against ucla. It was sooo dumb. There was smoke and everything. Andy took his team into the tunnels. I didn’t blame him. Tacky

  5. haleiwacrossfitter September 23, 2016 4:09 pm

Small crowd considering everything ucsb was branding this match for.

  6. T103 September 23, 2016 4:12 pm

k I have no eyes on this game so u guys gotta keep me updated! let go Bows!

  7. haleiwacrossfitter September 23, 2016 4:12 pm

Funny. The announcers just said they never saw the gym so full. They said it looks 3/4 full. Don’t look like it at all.

Annie is POUNDING. Good touches from the ucsb block on her

  8. haleiwacrossfitter September 23, 2016 4:13 pm

These sound like student announcers. I hate those. Very pro gaucho type announcing. It’s annoying. Time to turn off the volume and turn on Tiff.

  9. Cindy Luis September 23, 2016 4:15 pm

    Hawaii on a 6-0 run behind Maglio’s serving. It’s 11-6. TO UCSB

  10. Cindy Luis September 23, 2016 4:16 pm

    8. probably student radio guys. of course they are pro-UCSB

  11. Ashley September 23, 2016 4:16 pm

the guy calling the names on the video called Emily, savannah lol

  12. greenthumb September 23, 2016 4:23 pm

I’m guessing the 3/4 full is counting only the sideline sections, not the end sections? That’s the only way it makes sense. Especially because if you look at the size of the end line seating on the viewer’s left, it’s got more rows than the sideline seats we can see.

    And re:names “Kayla” Greeley lol.

  13. greenthumb September 23, 2016 4:24 pm

Any idea why they subbed for Maglio on this last service?

  14. Cindy Luis September 23, 2016 4:25 pm

    UH up 21-16. TO UCSB

  15. Cindy Luis September 23, 2016 4:26 pm

    13. I’m not there but Anderson is the normal sub for Maglio. My guess the first time around when Maglio served it was fairly early and they broke away on a 6-0 run. may not have wanted to waste the sub then.

  16. Cindy Luis September 23, 2016 4:28 pm

another ace by UCSB, it’s 22-19. TO UH

  17. greenthumb September 23, 2016 4:28 pm

    15, thanks.

  18. Cindy Luis September 23, 2016 4:31 pm

    Taylor ends it 25-20.

  19. greenthumb September 23, 2016 4:32 pm

    Glad team closed this out.

  20. haleiwacrossfitter September 23, 2016 4:33 pm

Megan Rice is putting some heat on the ball, too.

Little disappointed the gauchos made a mini run at the end. I want to see us just dominant a team. Give them no momentum.

  21. haleiwacrossfitter September 23, 2016 4:38 pm

I forgot who did this last year, too…but they are saying Ka-hawkeye.

I want to listen to Tiff, but it’s about 2 plays behind. hard to watch and listen.

  22. greenthumb September 23, 2016 4:40 pm

21 it was in the first round of NCAAs I think?

  23. Cindy Luis September 23, 2016 4:41 pm

    UH up 10-5. TO UCSB

  24. haleiwacrossfitter September 23, 2016 4:44 pm

    Castillo is playing well

  25. Cindy Luis September 23, 2016 4:46 pm

    UH up 15-7. TO UCSB

  26. haleiwacrossfitter September 23, 2016 4:46 pm

Annie is not putting the ball away right now. 2 kills, 2 errors, 9 attempts.

  27. haleiwacrossfitter September 23, 2016 4:47 pm

    Castillo is 6 for 7.

Granato is 7-2-13…good numbers for her, too

  28. haleiwacrossfitter September 23, 2016 4:49 pm

Annie starting off pounding the ball, but looks really tentative right now.

  29. Big Island VB fan September 23, 2016 4:50 pm

Now we can better appreciate the synchronization between video and audio when Uh plays at home. Here it is about three plays behind. Is the synchronization between video and audio better with the UCSB radio broadcast?

  30. greenthumb September 23, 2016 4:52 pm

Can anyone help with a more specific audio link? I can’t seem to find the feed using the general url. Thanks.

  31. haleiwacrossfitter September 23, 2016 4:52 pm

I think one of the announcers is new to volleyball. He didn’t know what a serve receive was. Asked the other guy if he would rather have a middle blocker in the game or another defensive specialist.

The other guy stuttered, clearly didn’t know how to answer. He started by saying a DS only plays back row, stuttered and then just stopped and went back to calling the game. It was hilarious.

  32. haleiwacrossfitter September 23, 2016 4:56 pm

He just had to explain what a double hit was. hahahaha

Hawaii blocked a ball, the “new guy” said that the ball wasn’t even going over the net. The other one said, “um, they blocked it, it was definitely going over the net.”

We got freaking cheech and chong on broadcast. Tune in for the comedy if anything. haha

  33. Cindy Luis September 23, 2016 4:56 pm

    UH wins 25-14, Castillo 7-0-8

  34. Brian September 23, 2016 5:02 pm

Has the rule for playing a ball outside of the antenna changed? I thought the ball was allowed to be passed back as long as the player stayed off of the opponents court and the ball remained outside of the antenna. It seems that now the ball is ruled out if it cross the net outside of the antenna so there is no opportunity to make a play on it.

  35. islandman September 23, 2016 5:05 pm

The stream video quality is better than UH’s one at SSC.

  36. haleiwacrossfitter September 23, 2016 5:08 pm

34, I believe it has changed this year. For the safety of the athletes. So, once it crosses the poles, point over. Like old times

  37. haleiwacrossfitter September 23, 2016 5:14 pm

Has Annie served this match yet? I don’t think so.

Also, I just noticed something. Granato’s swing is almost identical to Tai’s swing.

  38. Ashley September 23, 2016 5:15 pm

is it just me or does it seem like Kahakai shanks a lot of balls lately. maybe that’s just me.

  39. Brian September 23, 2016 5:19 pm

    Thanks haleiwacrossfitter

  40. jmy September 23, 2016 5:20 pm

Interesting match in progress: WSU leads UCLA 2-0, but behind in the 3rd…

  41. Cindy Luis September 23, 2016 5:20 pm

UH up 15-13 at the TTO
The ‘pursuit rule’ has changed to protect the athletes. no longer able to pass the stanchion and bring the ball back.

  42. haleiwacrossfitter September 23, 2016 5:22 pm

New guy didn’t know how to differentiate whos point it is when the ball hits the antenna. Other guy had to explain it depends who it touched last.

I can’t believe they could not find 2 people to announce this game in the city of Santa Barbara who knows volleyball. At least one guy knows volleyball. This broadcast is a tutorial of volleyball 101 from one announcer to another. The new guy is even asking basic knowledge volleyball questions. geez.

Ok..I’m done talking about them. Unless they something really, really stupid again. hahaha

  43. haleiwacrossfitter September 23, 2016 5:23 pm

Wow! Annie Killed that one. Nice!

  44. greenthumb September 23, 2016 5:24 pm

    Enjoying Mitchem’s altitude.

  45. Cindy Luis September 23, 2016 5:25 pm

    UH up 20-17. TO UCSB

  46. haleiwacrossfitter September 23, 2016 5:26 pm

WSU has been playing well. Interesting to see if they can continue this during the season.

Annie really makes an effort to snap at the highest point of contact. She really reaches up. I like her swing

  47. Cindy Luis September 23, 2016 5:28 pm

    UH up 22-18. T O Gauchos.

  48. Cindy Luis September 23, 2016 5:30 pm

Burns in at match point. it’s 24-19

  49. haleiwacrossfitter September 23, 2016 5:30 pm

    Sorry…last one.

The new guy just said that Dave’s 42 years coaching must be a national record.

    And he’s biting his nails

  50. greenthumb September 23, 2016 5:31 pm

The newbie color guy is trying to inject suspense, calling it a nail-biter.

  51. Cindy Luis September 23, 2016 5:31 pm

    UH wins 25-19

  52. haleiwacrossfitter September 23, 2016 5:34 pm

yes, he said it’s a nail biter, but he said he was biting his own nails, too.

Video just cut them off as they were talking. They probably couldn’t wait to shut them up either.

  53. rabbit ears September 23, 2016 5:35 pm

thank god match is over. The two announcers should be banned from calling games.

  54. greenthumb September 23, 2016 5:35 pm

    52 yep. 🙂

  55. rabbit ears September 23, 2016 5:43 pm

think Annie has found a home. Great game by Casey too.

  56. Maverick September 23, 2016 6:04 pm

Didn’t see tonight’s match, but according to the statistics, UH thoroughly dominated UCSB, outhitting them by 270 pct. pts. Unfortunate that Ruddins didn’t play, but it wouldn’t have mattered. If UH continues to be focused, they should sweep Poly tomorrow night.

The middles had one more attempt than Mitchem, and hit .579 as a group. Castillo played very well. Mitchem continues to play well, hitting over .250 again. At this time, I see no reason to move Annie from her current position.

  57. menehune September 23, 2016 6:07 pm

Wahine still letting too many dinks hit the floor, at least four in this match. Their Achilles heel.

  58. noblesol September 23, 2016 6:25 pm

Annie still looks a little uncomfortable out there, mostly on the defensive side. A few times there was a bit of a timing/location issue with her sets. Don’t think her and Iosia are completely on the same page yet. But her athleticism and power over/off the block made up for it. Agreed, so far so good. Her presence on the left helps all the other hitters and middles. Granato hit very well tonight, smart and consistent, taking what they gave her, and with power. She became the go to player. UCSB focused primarily on trying to stop Nikki, and the middles and left side had great opportunities any time Iosia could get them set.

Kahaki had an off night. In the 3rd set she became UCSB’s serving target.

  59. jmy September 23, 2016 6:59 pm

WSU beats UCLA, 18-16 in the 5th…

  60. Maverick September 23, 2016 7:00 pm

    59. Unfortunate for UH. At least UW beat USC.

  61. Cindy Luis September 23, 2016 7:16 pm

  62. jmy September 23, 2016 7:27 pm

WSU just might be top ten in the next poll.

  63. tongo September 23, 2016 7:35 pm

Nice win. Regarding Kahakai’s shanks, Gauchos were serving really well and as a team has more aces than the Wahines coming into this match. Backrow didn’t help Savanah by calling the ball in or out until the third set. Sets to Mitchem are still not there for her. After Annie got blocked, she was overly cautious and Dave didn’t like that. She started to pound it again in third set. The terminations by Granato, Mitchem and Taylor are pretty impressive – and opened it up for our MHs. Maglio had a great serving run. Granato and Castillo were great tonight. Iosia continues to impress although I really enjoyed seeing Higgins set for a bit.

  64. warriorwahine September 23, 2016 7:39 pm

anyone got the link to the match on bigwest.tv?

  65. tongo September 23, 2016 8:12 pm

It’s on the Big West TV site but it does not appear to be working anymore. Anybody know how to get it to play again?

  66. Astroboy September 23, 2016 10:23 pm

The “Thunderdome” (no, it’s not a dome, it’s peculiarly boxy and square) actually seats 6000. For volleyball they only open the lower sections. Attendance was probably under 1000.

A tip for watching the video feed: turn off the video feed sound, and tune in to ESPN 1420. They were off today by about 30 seconds. But you can synchronize them by waiting for a timeout or a specific serve. Pause the video or audio (whichever one is ahead), and then unpause when the other stream catches up. You can usually get within a second or so. Be warned the radio drifts back and forth in synch by a few seconds, I think they stretch the audio feed to deal with commercials and such.

  67. hollycow September 23, 2016 11:03 pm

    Stats site says attendance 330.

  68. warriorwahine September 24, 2016 12:06 am

    66. astroboy do you have said video feed still?

  69. Amosilatus September 24, 2016 4:47 am

After watching Granato’s first few games this year I began to feel she was going to be a very good player someday. She wasn’t doing well in those games, but what impressed me was the look in her eyes. That told me a lot about what was inside her–focus, intensity, confidence, determination, and toughness. Now, as this season progresses, I’m pleased . . . her play is quickly improving . . . the great potential is showing its face!

  70. Bozo September 24, 2016 6:32 am

Seems the biggest difference this year is the confidence everyone seems to have with the setting. The connection b/t Iosia and Mitchem needs some polish…. but man this girl has smooth soft hands. (my opinion)

  71. tongo September 24, 2016 7:05 am

Was at the match and attendance was likely 350+ at the start. Students started to come in set 1 & 2. It was closer to but less than 1,000. UCI Basketball star 7’6″ Mamadou was sitting with Nikki’s family. Pretty cool!

Wahine serving pretty much neutralize the Gauchos. Without Lindsey Ruddins in their lineup, our serving targeted Hoffman, their other primary attacker. Our serving kept Gauchos out of system neutralizing their other primary MH Grunt.
If wahines could have served this well against Minnesota last year when we were in a tough rotation, we would have won that match.

  72. Andy September 24, 2016 7:47 am

Went to UCSB for the second straight year. Good size crowd for their place – at least 1/4 Hawaii fans is my guess. Loud, slightly rude, but ultimately energetic and fun student section. The SSC could really use that, but I know it’s good for the program to be able to sell so many higher priced season tickets in the lower section. What really cracked me up was whenever a Hawaii player went back to serve, the fans would yell out “bounce!” each time she bounced the ball before serving. “Bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce . . .”

  73. PBnJz September 24, 2016 7:47 am

#69…I think Granato is fearless on the court and I really like that about her. She’s had an up and down year so far, but her grit is obvious. I remember she showed a good, confident, i-can-do-it attitude as a freshman, too. I hope that toughness continues to serve her and the Wahine well.

  74. rabbit ears September 24, 2016 8:46 am

Granato had 3 service errors. Too many for a non jump server.

  75. livealoha September 24, 2016 9:29 am

If the line up remains intact, I believe Granato is gonna put up some impressive numbers. She’s gonna thrive being an in-system outside hitter that doesn’t have to hit the high four when Hawaii is out of system – Taylor and Mitchem can take care of that.

Plus, she has the most pop in her hits on UH and probably in the Big West. She’s gonna be fun to watch develop. Glad she’s settled into a starting role this year.

  76. hollycow September 24, 2016 10:58 am

Cindy the article of UH being The Lone Wolf brings to mind, what is the latest on UC San Diego’s admission to the Big West. It’s been quite a while since anything has been said about the situation.

  77. haleiwacrossfitter September 24, 2016 11:18 am

72, Andy, Washington’s home crowd started that serving chant thing. They have been doing that to Hawaii. Annoying.

Regarding the setting. I love that Iosia has a great connection with both our middles. Something that has been of frustration the last few years. Not all Higgin’s fault, but still a misconnection.

  78. warriorwahine September 24, 2016 11:46 am

    76. oh so ucsd has turned d1 and is joining big west?

    77. didnt they udub go BOOM when cassie strickland their lone jump server served? dont recall them chanting bounce when hawai’i was dribbling the ball.

  79. warriorwahine September 24, 2016 12:02 pm

add to 77. also hard to believe it was ‘not all higgins fault.’ but oh well at least we got her a decent enough passer as well as jouster and a spin server.

    also speaking of serving:

    74. granato as well as anyone who jump floats if they are having too many serving errors especially if hitting it into the net, they need to switch to a standing float (usually how taller players and middles serve). as in ‘dont bother to run and jump’, just concentrate on hitting it over the net. – so simple, kind of like what ginger long did making her serving better in the first and second round ncaa she switched as did sarah mendoza.

granato can spin serve anyways, ive seen it during her high school match especially the state championship vs moanalua. perhaps jeff hall needs to ‘shut it down’ (on her jump float serve) kind of like what she did with noreen iosia just jump topspin serve anyways.

  80. haleiwacrossfitter September 24, 2016 12:09 pm

Yup. They did. Also said “spin” when a server spinned the ball in their hand. Watch a UW home match on pac12tv. They do it at every home match. Haven’t seen a home match of their yet this year, but they have done it for years. I remember in 2010 when we were there, they did it.

Oh, sorry Cindy, I’m not one to nitpick details in articles. But this one made me go back over and over again in my head. And then eventually I had to look it up to make sure. But the wahine are 8-4 this year. You have them at 7-5 in your article.

I went week by week just in my head and I just couldn’t figure out who the 5th loss was to. I tried to not look it up. But then just had to because I couldn’t get it. Haha. Sorry. I don’t mean to nit pick. It was just something that caught my eye and I ended up trying to mentally figure it out. And I don’t put anything past my forgetting and aging lack of memory these days. 🙂

  81. haleiwacrossfitter September 24, 2016 12:11 pm

    79. Part of the misconnection is always a part of the hitter as well. It takes two to connect. It’s like having a baby.

  82. Ron September 24, 2016 1:07 pm

The difference is that Higgins is a good setter and Noreen is a great setter. Once we get our lineup set, she will be even better. So many weapons! I didn’t actually see the game, (Listened to Mr.Wells)but it sounded like Castillo really wants that middle job.

  83. Rabbit ears September 24, 2016 1:28 pm

Noreen is actually not connecting with Maglio some. Sets are too low . You can see Maglio giving her the higher signal at times. Maglio can touch 10 ft 8 in.

  84. jmy September 24, 2016 2:26 pm

    Michigan State leads Nebraska 2-0…

  85. Warriorfan September 24, 2016 2:39 pm
