From previous thread regarding Candy Kane. Interesting name. I found a brief bio about her and winning the “gold medal” match against USC in 1982. Incidentally, this was the first televised Wahine volleyball match I saw.

jmy mentioned on previous thread that Nebraska’s Foecke isn’t the terminator she was last year. I think teams are now more focused on her. Also, there is a precedent for this, Penn State’s Ali Frantti, who was the #2 recruit her senior year and NCAA national freshman of the year. Hit .310 her freshman year, then .239 last year, and is now hitting .155 her junior year.

I don’t know if this is relevant, but it’s interesting to note that the USA Women’s Sitting Volleyball team just made history by beating China for the very first time and winning the gold medal in the Paralympics today in Rio. China had won every gold medal in previous Paralympics women’s volleyball. USA broke their streak. What an accomplishment! They simply played spectacular! 9. McClendon was the #7 senior ace and national freshman of the year. Her hitting percentage from frosh to senior was .331, .264, .246, and .274. She was named to the second, first, third and second all-america teams. So while her second year pct. was down from her freshman year, she was named first team all-american.

Like that Granato is hitting well to make up for Taylor’s slow start. Mitchem at .200 but more to play. Maglio hitting a very consistent .750, just like last night. No errors either.
When Annie, Natasha and Nikki are in the front row, it looks pretty intimidating.

Following Pepperdine during the offseason, I was excited about their freshman class and transfers. I’m not impressed at all with their performance last night and tonight so far. Kind of reminds me of back when Scott coached Imi Ike 18s several years ago. Had all the “big name” players Ma’a, Adolpho, a young Taylor (can’t remember the rest, it’s been way too long), but would still regularly lose to Asics, Jammers 17s, & Kuikahi 16s in the Power League. I was never impressed with his player development or tactical game strategies. I would always cringe when people would say that “he is Dave’s boy” when it talks would start about Dave’s replacement. I’d prefer Sealy if not some darkhorse candidate. Please no Deitre or Sunahara. Double cringe.
On another note, I’m absolutely loving Mitchem. She has the skill set of a pure vb player. Love her armswing and solid topspin contact on the ball.

There always seems to be a “sophomore slump” after having an amazing freshman year. Most recent memory; Faucette and Eckerman from Texas, McClindon, Franti and maybe Foecke this year. It’s still early for her. And even Nikki, even though she was injured.
But like Mav said teams focus more on them. They normally pick it back up later that year or junior year. Deja was really good her Sophomore-senior year, but not the phenom and difference maker she was her freshman year. I loved Deja by the way. Loved her smile and athleticism.
This year, it looks so far as if we saw possibly the freshman phenom this year in Molly Haggerty. She is KILLING it this year. Absolutely unstoppable.
Annie is BOMBING it tonight. Love me the termination out there. I really hope she stays on the left this year.

47. Smith shanked a serve receipt the last time she was in, and was promptly taken out for Granato. Other than the end of the set, Greeley and Granato have done a good job, so I’d leave them in, favoring the game’s long term trends over a short term blip.
Man…what a difference Annie makes. Just her presence is uplifting. Another huge offensive threat and another jump server. Our serving is so incredible this year.
This team is going to make some noise. I’m feeling so much better this weekend.
If we can get KG back healthy, whew!!
Nikki also looks so much more fresher at this point of the match. Not setting her as much. She looks like a huge burden has been lifted off her shoulders and is playing like it.

I love watching Annie on the left she needs to stay there and I can’t help but feel very annoyed wih the coaches for not playing her on the left From the time she got here, she had all this potential and coaches needed to take chances so that she would fullfill it. Her serve is very good too not sure why anderson was serving for her last night.
Wish the coaches moved Maglio to the pins as well she would be so good there , but guess we have to wait for next year:) and we need a dominant middle this year.

53. As you may agree, having multiple options will help with keeping Taylor fresher, and is also a risk minimizer–if one player has an off night, you can count on others to pick up the pace.

Interestingly, there are 4 Big West teams in the unofficial RPI rankings: UH 20, Poly 37, UCSB 45 and LBSU 50. UH has five non-conference opponents in the top 50: Wisconsin 2, Washington 8, KSU 13, UCLA 17 and Arizona 42. Perhaps this is the year that the Big West becomes a two-bid conference, even if UH wins the auto-bid.
Man i love mags in the middle, and Nikki & Annie outsides…. Bummed they couldn’t sweep this 2nd nite, but good way to respond after being unable to close out 3rd set
Hope Mckenna keeps this play up during conference if she can get her percentage to around .235 by the time the ncaa tourney starts it will be big.
Plus, with Annie on the left, she will get more sets. Which is what we need her to have. She needs to be set so she can terminate. Our middles are good enough to leave Annie out there.
We can’t afford to have Annie only get four or five sets a night, which could happen if our passing stinks. With her out there, she can take a lot of out of system sets.
This upcoming week will be tough. If ucsb has all their pieces, they could beat us. We gotta stay aggressive with them.

68. I feel that way with Mags too, wish she got more sets as a pin hitter. I think we will really see her shine at opposite next year which will make me wish she played there more than just one season.
69. I’m not too worried Pepperdine is better than those two teams, only worry is first road trip so they might start out sluggish.
69. The only really good team UCSB has played was San Diego, a 0-3 loss. Not clear how good they are. Poly is better but lost their two matches with top teams BYU (0-3) and Stanford (2-3). Adlee has a mini-sophomore slump going, hitting .180, although Gruenewald and Clewis are tearing it up at over .300 each. Will be two of the three better teams in conference, but if UH plays like it did this weekend, they should win both in 3 or 4 sets.
70. But for someone named Nikki Taylor.
I don’t remember any team in the past that had so many really good servers. Nikki alone is costing me a fortune ($1 a pop). We also have the deepest team we have ever had IMO. I admit that I have not been a Granato fan but I am becoming one. I realize it is not fair to expect the same things from her as from her more experienced teammates. Iosia trusts her and that is good enough for me. Annie will have a tremendous impact where ever she plays, middle or left.
Has Dave said he still plans on moving Annie to MH? I think he’s concerned with the post season matches where we’ll need 2 strong middles like we had last year with Magill/Maglio. Our blocking was really solid in the middle and that is something we’re missing this year. We’ll also have a healthier Greeley and more seasoned Sibley by then. I think our passing is the main problem right now.
75. he said he doesn’t know what they’ll do when Sibley is 100 percent. Said they’ll evaluate this week before leaving and see what’s best for the team. Quote: It’s not an easy call right now.

It was another fun match tonight. The team looks and feels like a wahine team – so balance. Another solid start for Mitchem and you get the impression that there is lots more to come. Tom and Diane must be so proud! Maglio and Granato continues to impress. Great to see Higgins on the floor and getting an ace.
Annie Mitchem is a cool, calm confident cat out there…She impresses me the more I see her play…Nikki and Annie is the 1-2 Punch on the outside …Annie really makes her kills look so easy…There were a number of times she just flat out put the ball down…She IMO is that Left Side Pkayer!! Please keep her there!! I can only imagine if Annie, Nikki, and Greenly was 100% from the get go, we would be undefeated or 1 lost to a Carlini-Haggerty tandem…. But I rather be 20plus wins and 5 losses but at the Final Four then 29-0 and eliminated in the early rounds….Now, it’s time to take care of business….First up, a really Scrappy and good UCSB team on the road…”Let’s Go Bows!”

43. shoji needs to rest greeley and let her heal/recover, especially later on in the sets. have smith in place of her or another ds or even higgins in the back row (with higgins even try a temporary 6-2, including letting the front row setter attack as she sees fit)
44. my neighbors sitting around me grimaced when ponce came in to serve against set point, not to pick on her or anything, but her tiny size (smaller than the average woman at 5’4″) certainly may require her to jump to serve and jump floats i think are medium risk to even high risk, low reward. and in either case has a good chance of hitting the net. not the best choice for shoji given the circumstances at set point. higgins would of been even better or at least just do a stand float for the primary purpose of hitting it over the net.
46. thats no kidding they missed out. i witnessed them around me leaving after wahine lost that 3rd set. they were ready to go home. (though whats funny is jack in the box was probably licking their chops that they dont have to give free tacos to entire arena.) having the 4th set was still more value entertainment wise and giving na wahine some extra tune.
51. smith didnt exactly shank the serve receive but soft dug it that it achieved almost no height. at least it aint like how greeley and granato shanked it – the ball went out of control.
52 and 56. yes indeed what a difference annie mitchem makes. with her presence you know something is going to explode. her jump serve is also sturdy and hardly has chances of missing.
12. speaking of jump serving, wahine has materialized quite some development in that since 3 years past from 2013 when emily hartong was the only one doing it and tayler higgins on rare occasions.
2014 originally had tayler higgins the only one executing it as a jump serving setter, then arizona state used it on na wahine with devastating effects. coupling that with the abysmal serving vs san diego state, they ‘worked’ on their serving as shar tai manuolevao developed hers including a time a 4 of a kine ace. (keani passi and savannah kahakai had it too but only got to use it as a one time deal with limited effect.)
2015 you add in nikki taylor into executing the jump serving (specially developed from beach) as well as annie mitchem (used it only in 1 match unfortunately) as well as emily maglio (also developed hers in beach, but unfortunately didnt use it indoor.)
fast forward to the present 2016 and you have an arsenal of jump topspin servers. i think you can credit that to noreen iosia. (you can also thank emily maglio if you want for jump serving it to the back of her head to welcome her as a frosh in ‘an auspicious kind of way.’) she made the first jump serve this season (her first in her collegiate career) and it was an ace that scared wisconsin enough to say ‘her serve was nasty.’ (in fact i got the perfect gist for noreen – Nice Hands, Nasty Serve!) noreen substantially improved everyones performance including with her stable jump serve and compelled even nikki strengthening on her jump serving. during a Game On segment, the subject of jump serving was even brought to the forefront and in the spotlight. it is quite a development of a weapon along with the blocking and the size of na wahine that developed from 2014 to 2015 and now.
WarriorWahine, congratulations, most of your above comments make sense. I, however, would like to point out to you and your friend that Katrina Ponce has been a 4 year walk-on who has paid her own way to be a part of this program. This has taken a considerable amount of sacrifice on the part of her and her family just so she can experience the pride of being a Wahine. She seldom misses her serve and she is an import an member of the team so cut her some slack!
81. Definitely agree, Ron! Ponce seldom makes mistakes. And she just had an assist and ace to score the final two points in Set 2 last night. Hardly inconceivable to think Shoji would use her in a crucial situation. She was the top serving sub in 2014.
Fortunately, we have both Higgins and Kendra, they are very good setters and could be starting at most D1 schools. Noreen just happens to be one of the best. Consequently, we have depth in this position, in case the injury or illness bug strikes.
Geez, Annie is great!!! Her hard work has paid off, she’s got hops for a tall girl and will give shorter pin hitters nightmares. Hope Kirsten benefits from this experience and increases her vertical like Annie and like Emily Hartong when she was here.

Annie’s efficiency went down last night from the prior night, but she looked a little more comfortable out there … even doing well on serve receive a couple times.
Giving up leads late in sets … this team gets too comfortable when they think they have the game in hand. Need to fix that!
Love all the jump serving! Lets not forget tho that its high risk, high reward … emphasis on the risk. When a couple of jump servers have a bad night, that’s a lot of points to give up, especially for a team that sometimes gives up runs of points in a match…
Love the balance! The threat of taylor and mitchem on the pins can really ease the pressure for granato and the middles …. granato especially.
That said … bring on the big west! Big test on the road next week in ucsb and cal poly. A very critical first road trip … and will have just as much, if not more, postseason implications for the wahine …
Maverick — I’d love to see the big west get back to a 2-bid or even multi-bid conference. The early numbers look promising!
As you know, there are year end RPI scenarios on VT … and unfortunately, the numbers suggest the big west will be single bid again this year. A lot can still happen. Those are just predictions, of course. But bluepenguin’s calculations on VT have usually been a good and valuabke approximation.
Even hawaii’s year end RPI — if they suffer a couple losses in conference — might put them on the bubble or even out of the NCAA tournament, in the event they do not win the big west and fail to get an auto bid.
Goes without saying though that we need to see how it all shakes out. Hoping hawaii just takes care of business in the big west, as they should! And eliminate any possible scenario where hawaii doesn’t get invited to the big dance.
Because as we saw glimpses of this weekend, this team still has the potential to make a deep run, even like last year, as an unseeded team …
Glad to see Burns in there hitting and blocking. How come they took Casey out ? Later, near the end of the last set, Burns was taken out after hitting a ball out, i think. Hope Burns keeps getting a chance to play, but that might go down when Sibley comes back and some players are moved ?
islandman — burns was put in early in set 1 because at that point pepperdine made a run and even took the lead … around 9-7 pepperdine, iirc … so it just looked like shoji wanted to break the momentum shift and try something, without burning a timeout. Then burns got a couple blocks and kills, earning some more pt, i would guess … when she and castillo switched again late in the match, i would imagine Shoji was attempting the same thing …
I also want to give props to Ponce … a hard working walk on, who is usually very steady. On the tv broadcast, it was mentioned that ponce’s service error in set 3 was just her 2nd of the season. So it looks like shoji was playing the better odds, instead of a riskier jump server.
Execution in critical moments is something all the wahine have had to work on in this young season so far …
85. The odds of being a true two-bid conference are not good, except if Hawaii finishes second but with one or perhaps two losses. As of this morning, the Big West is 3 games below .500, a little better than last year but still not good enough to be a multi-bid conference. By comparison, the PAC-12 is 64 games ABOVE .500, and all its teams have a winning non-conference record. On avg, each Pac-12 team has won five more matches than it has lost. UH’s SOS, ranked sixth right now, will fall as more Big West records are factored into its RPI. As you wrote, UH just needs to get the auto-bid.
We will win the Big West. If we fail to do that then we don’t deserve to be in the play-offs. We are loaded with talent. We have people on the bench that would be starters on most top 30 teams. We have 4 starters, maybe 5, that would be starters at any of the top programs in the Country. We have not played a team yet this year that would have beaten us if we played like we did this weekend. We finally have the players , coaching staff and the mental attitude to win it all.
Agree with Cubicle1126, Ponce could start for many teams. And Ron’s assessment is spot on. If they keep on improving like they have, this team could surpass what they accomplished last year. My only disagreement is that we would be on the bubble if we do not win the Big West. This team will go to the NCAA postseason.
81. first of all, its not my ‘friend.’ its the audience that were sitting near me they left the arena once ponce served it in the net. also like i said im not picking on katiana NOT katrina ponce. ‘ana’ as she is called or ‘little ana’ as she is remembered seldom misses her serve because she is seldom called upon to serve, let alone play. having her doing the serve when its set closing has not been her strength (i can only recall her not missing her serve during the ucla match in 2014 during aloha ball set 3 down 2-0 in which she herself grimaced and looked as was about to throw up; and that could of easily ended up worse.)
82. i disagree, her track record serving into the net at the crucial closing of the set has been she only not serve it into the net once as explained above.
anyways that actually can be easily fixed, get rid of the jump floater with a standing float just right behind the service line (just simply concentrate on hitting it over the net.) quite frankly, comparing the jump floater to the jump server, the jump floater is high risk, low reward. (hitting the net in that fashion – thats embarrassing!)
84. jump serving is high risk, high reward but the idea is to put the opponent on edge even if you happen to miss. i mean its certainly better than high risk, low reward like the jump float.
if jump serving wasnt working or server injured/tired (like nikki was stumbling vs u-dub in set 5), the server can simply impromptu or temporary switch to a standing float just like tayler higgins did last year when recovering from being injured and shar manuolevao did when it was too much work for her. the latter who switched it permanently, is where you stand far back as far as possible behind the service line as if you were to simply hit the ball as hard as possible mortar lobbing it into the air (it certainly will go over the net and it wont tend to miss and go long, so you only have to worry about it going wide.)
a key to noreens stable jump serve is she takes her time with the toss and keeps it simple (notice she may miss if she served in haste) as so is annies jump serve is sturdy because she keeps it simple. tayler higgins also keeps her toss steady. in contrast with nikki, you can notice her jump serving kind of not so stable (she stabled it better both matches vs pepperdine but im comparing her serving to the previous 3 mentioned.)
anyways hawai’i has a total of 6 known jump servers this season (4 actively doing so, while 2 emily and savannah are currently not active with theirs.) since dave has 90% serving it in as alluded to in #12, i would say ‘spin away’ if i was him. after all, 8 seconds is plenty of time to get your toss right and smack it across.
