Heading to the Phoenix sun
The Warriors are scheduled to depart this afternoon on a non-stop flight to Phoenix.
They will spend the night in Phoenix, conduct a light practice there tomorrow morning, then make the 2-hour drive to Tucson ahead of Saturday’s game.
Temperatures are supposed to be in the mid-80s for the kickoff at 4:45 p.m. Hawaii time.
The Warriors practiced for about 90 minutes this morning. They ended the regular session with the 2-minute drill. On the first play, Ikaika Woolsey and Marcus Kemp connected on a 70-yard TD. But the marker was reset at the 32. Four plays later, Woolsey lofted a 16-yard pass to Makoa Camanse-Stevens for the touchdown.
After that, the players on the travel roster were dismissed, and the weekly Warrior Rumble — a scrimmage involving redshirts and developing players — was staged. Among the highlights:
> Wideout Kumoku Noa caught a 26-yard pass in which he tip-toed in front of the sideline.
> Tumua Tuinei, enjoying his new role at safety, intercepted Cole McDonald.
> Don’Yeh Patterson caught a 39-yard pass from Cole Brownholtz.
> McDonald weaved his way for 24-yard scoring run.
> On fourth-and-goal from the 6, McDonald rolled to his right, then thew back to wide-open running back Freddie Holly, who jogged into the end zone.

I hope the coaches are watching these weekly “rumbles” of the redshirts and back-ups…What I see missing on the travel squad and current front-line players is an absence of a “fire in their belly.” The desire and fire to compete and win appears to be missing in some. Maybe, we should give these other players a chance to play and bring back that fire…
We get chance to win this weekend if we play with fire and passion…Go Warriors!

Sounds like Ikaika is ready with his 2 TD passes. I know, it’s just practice, but maybe he’s putting it all together. We’ll find out this Saturday. Go Warriors, play like warriors, you get chance !
Unfortunately, history shows Ikaika’s practice performances do not translate to games. But if Rolo’s gonna stick with him, then goooo Ikaika… please, we beg of you lol.
Tomey’s said he talks to Rolo at least once a week. Surely, Tomey’s stock in trade is playing tough especially on defense and as he has said, he always wants a chance to try to win it in the 4th quarter. Which brings back to defense. Recruiting on defense is priority #1, especially the line of scrimmage. The back end has had their problems so I can see Keala Santiago and Kalen Hicks getting more opportunity to get in the game and show what they can do. I also see Okeke getting playing time soon. We have to get more turnovers, as again we are near the top in leading the nation in making the most turnovers. Averaging giving up more than 50 points per game, it’s tough for our offense to keep up. We’ll see how the game goes this week. We need to play a clean game to have a chance.
I hope it will be exciting til the end and I hope UH can kick a field goal by Sanchez to win it by 31-30. Just dreaming!
kanak, I know. Been watching him perform in practice all these past years, Some of his game mistakes leaves me speechless. But coach says he’s our guy this season, so Gooooo Ikaika ! And Goooo Warriors !!

I’m hoping this is a better team than the one we’ve seen during the last two weeks. I’ll give them a break at this point due to the extensive travel, but now they’ve had a week and a half at home. They should be ready.
If UH beats or are close with Arizona, we have a chance at a bowl. I expect real effort from the whole team. If we lose badly, Rolo has two weeks to figure out who wants to win enough to be compete on every play. That’s what playing like a Warrior means!
And, finally, I have to admit being an armchair quarterback lets me make these comments. In truth, Rolo and his coaches know what they’re doing, so I will ultimately trust them. My feeling at this point is that Rolo is the answer for UH football whether it’s this season or ten seasons from now. I will stick with him until the end … whatever that turns out to be!

TUCSON, Ariz. » Quarterback Brandon Dawkins is expected to get the second start of his Arizona career against the University of Hawaii Saturday after the Wildcats announced today that veteran Anu Solomon is “questionable” with a knee injury.
Solomon, a redshirt junior, was born in Hawaii and moved to Las Vegas in junior high. His father, Jarrett, was an all-state linebacker at Farrington in 1993.
Dawkins is the more mobile of the two and ran for two touchdowns and 97 yards on 16 carries last week. He also passed for one touchdown.
Just read Ferd’s story on Dick Tomey in the Star-Advertiser. He noted that in 1980 – 1986, Aloha Stadium was “the place” to be on a Saturday night and attendence never dipped below 42,000 (high of 45,673).
I remember those days… the games started at 7:30 pm and when you entered the stadium under the lights, it was carnival-like atmosphere. Many vendors, booths, and activities…and the field was electric. Parking around the stadium was open and people tended to tailgate in the same area and got to know their neighbors. Much food was exchanged and there were mini block parties all over.
Most of the aunties, uncles. and cousins were there–under the same imperative that makes going to grandma’s house on New Year’s day– everyone bringing 3 times more food than you could eat. There are no figures for the number of people that did not enter the stadium but stayed to talk story, watch things, and prepare to set up the post-game food. Many aunties did this while uncles had game tickets. Friends and relatives came too, and they often went to the box office after dinner. Did I mention games started at 7:30 pm?
I recall that even in losing years, the tailgates continued and the turnstile spun. Yup, Saturday night at the stadium was the place to be, even though there was game replay at 8:00 am the next morning.
Not that it matters but UTM might have been better than some thought-Cincy is outplaying Houston right now big time

The StarAdvertiser did have a supplement the the preseason for the football and Women’s Volleyball. I had not noticed any “press guidebook” in the UH Athletic webpage. The newspaper does publish a “lineup” on the day of the game but no “program” per se.

I recently read in Pacific business news that Rolo bought a house in Manoa.
If he feel he has to pull the plug on IW, he will. His job is on the line. For the next several years, his job is safe. But, if IW keeps throwing Int’s, we’ll see a permanent switch at QB.

I’ve been watching parts of the Grambling State-Arizona game on the PAC-12 network. Hope they replay the UH game. Always nice to see it again, especially since I miss things when I’m there in person.

Big weekend for Hawaii Football.

I am beaming with pride over the fact that Makani Kema-Kaleiwahea has been named to the Allstate “Good Works” Team. Having spent 30 years as a sales executive and having a spouse who owns an Allstate Agency I’m especially proud to,have a connection to both. Congrats to Makani! Now go gets some “good hands” on some Wildcats!!!!! Go Warriors!!!!!!
We need the same type of tempo Arizona is going to put on us and apply it to Nevada. Hoping for the best this week, stay healthy but next week is where i see a turning point for the team. Run the RB’s this week, don’t show too much and up the tempo next week vs Nevada. no matter what we are 0-0 next week in the MWC and i believe the defense will show up against the Wolfpack.
This week we find out what kind of team this will be. The boatload of mistakes have to be cleaned up by now or…….the energy and all out effort with clean hard hitting solid tackling despite the heat. Special teams must improve tremendously at least KO and KOR. All backs running downhill, all receivers catching catchable balls. If not for repeated turnovers Grambling stood to win last weeks game. Even though on the road-no excuse each unit has to turn in an all out effort. They have a bye next week before opening at home-whatever this team has we should see it tomorrow. I expect a very close game-Go Warriors!!!! Go KG!!!!!

I’m looking for those sorta-glossy programs they used to sell at games for a few bucks. Definitely not as detailed as the media guide, but with pics of all the players, etc. Aunty lives on the Big Island, so she can get the SA stuff easily.
