  9. H-Man September 1, 2016 3:27 pm

Big House kinda reminds me of the Coliseum. Big, bench seats, nothing fancy. They just have rabid fans that stand the entire game. Who needs seats?

  10. Stephen Tsai September 1, 2016 3:46 pm

    H-Man:
I imagine the seating capacity can go from 107,000 to 80,000 depending on the width of the spectators.

  11. Former UH Athlete September 1, 2016 3:54 pm

    Interesting facts:
Found a database that shows what apparel companies pay colleges to promote their brand. I believe the #’s are just monetary payments, may not include other comped items.

    MWC:
Boise State University – Nike $1,275,000
University of New Mexico – Nike $1,050,000
    UNLV – Nike $1,015,000
University of Hawaii – Under Armour $995,000
    Fresno State – Nike $575,000
University of Nevada, Reno – Nike $410,000
Utah State University – Nike $400,000
Colorado State University – Under Armour Not disclosed/redacted
San Diego State University – Nike Not disclosed/redacted
University of Wyoming – Nike Not disclosed/redacted

See what facilities look like when you own and operate a stadium…

No UH branded fire hydrants or gourmet salted peanuts at Aloha Stadium. Just rusting hydrants and generic stadium nuts for us, which provides zero revenue to the athletics department. At least we get garlic fries… but again, none of that revenue supports UH Athletics.

  13. HawaiiMongoose September 1, 2016 4:12 pm

Wow, that’s a LOT of bleachers. Bleachers and bleachers and more bleachers, as far as the eye can see. At least we have real seats in our rusting stadium, with backs and armrests.

  14. Akamai Okole September 1, 2016 4:15 pm

    Great Afternoon All!

Flew in to DTW this afternoon.

I suppose if HNL were surrounded by as much farm land as UM is then owning a stadium might be viable for UH

…or if in Rolo’s 2nd season the Warriors had 90k season ticket holders. 🙄

  15. Andrew September 1, 2016 4:19 pm

I remember going to Wisconsin stadium last year and the bleachers have the sticker markers for where your seat are, and if you’re sitting next to someone wide, you end up overlapping onto another seat number because they take up part of yours. In other words, if it’s crowded, it’s cramped and uncomfortable.

  16. cocobean September 1, 2016 5:01 pm

#10. I sent your two suggestions to the stadium authority but they rejected your Warrior Poke and Rainbow Shave Ice ideas.

  17. islandman September 1, 2016 5:08 pm

Sore okoles when and if Michigan fans sit.

  18. FearGod September 1, 2016 6:16 pm

    Does it benefit Woolsey?….
Observing the 1st & 2nd quarter from the sideline.
Thus allowing Zwhalen to start the game.
Is he able to observe the first half from the booth, then come down to start the 2nd half?

  19. SteveM September 1, 2016 6:18 pm

I remember the bench seating at Sam Boyd stadium and I was at the end. We all stood up to cheer and when we sat down I found myself on the stairs. Next game I sat next to rasu begasu (las vegas), our ex-sumotori when the same thing happened. He nodded and next time up he gave a little nudge the other way–I had plenty of bench then and someone fell off the other end…think it was a UNLV fan. 🙂 Ahhh, I miss him. RIP.

  20. wafan September 1, 2016 6:41 pm

The trick, SteveM, was to sit in front of Rasu. Could clearly listen to and laugh about his comments. Last time, he teased a young CA Tsai-ko who does not post much and urged him to tell the extremely large man two rows in front to sit down and cheer for the ‘Bows. The young Tsai-ko just gave us a terrified look and vigorously shook his head.

Yup. Definitely miss many of the Tsai-kos who used to post regularly.

  21. SteveM September 1, 2016 7:17 pm

wafan — I vaguely recalled the incident you referred to in #18 and found the 2011 game photo. Rasu and I had seats 1-3 (somehow) and you are sitting with izzy in seats 4 & 5 in the row below. 🙂

  22. wafan September 1, 2016 8:32 pm

SteveM . . . Rich was sitting at the end of the row. Before the game started someone knocked over one of his beers. I picked up his camera bag and waited for he and Rasu to return. Rich was upset not that his camera bag was soaked with beer, but that someone had knocked one of his beers over.

  23. kev-1 September 1, 2016 10:09 pm

    Wow! That’s a really nice … bench?????

I get the other pics, but the sideline bench? Am I missing something?

That’s one cool hydrant. Someone should pee on it.

  24. Markazulu September 1, 2016 10:57 pm

Quick question did we have any 3 and outs against cal?

  25. burro sabio September 1, 2016 11:04 pm

ST how many players on the trip and how many QBs?

  26. akuhead2 September 2, 2016 1:38 am

Here is my comment for Coach Rolovich:
I think the home and away games against Nevada Reno and Nevada Las Vegas should be mixed so that you have at least ONE football game, AWAY, in Nevada each year. (rather than two away in alternating years).

  27. Kapahulu September 2, 2016 4:01 am

    A-House:
Last night we went to Ford Field in Detroit to watch an NFL Exhibition game between the Detroit Lions and the Buffalo Bills.

Former UH Football player Greg Salas
(# 11) is on the Bills Roster. I only noticed him receiving punts. Each one was a fair catch.

Beautiful Stadium, very fan friendly. All enclosed with lots of different food concessions including Bob’s Big Boy.

Tickets were only $3 each but add on a few more dollars in fees. They get you in parking fees $30. We got three at kickoff.

Final score Detroit Lions 31 Buffalo Bills 0.

Halftime was some kids playing Pop Warner Football with a lot of their parents taking pictures.

Today looks like a Museum day.

  28. Kapahulu September 2, 2016 4:03 am

    Should be there.

  29. Ipu Man September 2, 2016 8:32 am

Well…hope the tv announcers don’t start talking about
other games and ignore UH and Michigan players giving
    it all they got.

  30. Ipu Man September 2, 2016 8:34 am

Also hope the refs don’t call questionable penalties
    that give UM the game…

  31. Ipu Man September 2, 2016 8:34 am

But then that would be like voting and hoping
    your candidates win…

  32. Inyoface September 2, 2016 8:35 am

Appalachian State almost had another giant killer upset on their season opener with Tennessee.

  33. amela September 2, 2016 9:27 am

If we had benches we probably could fit 15,000 more but then who wants to sit on benches. Trump said if UH losses then the game was rigged.

  34. H-Man September 2, 2016 9:34 am

If you’re not a regular visitor to the Hawaii Athletics web site, check out the article on Hawaii-Michigan facts. Interesting. re: http://hawaiiathletics.com/news/2016/8/30/football-hawai-i-takes-on-no-7-michigan.aspx?path=football

  35. Warrior Nation September 2, 2016 10:04 am

The only way we get the upset is if our defense can force some turnovers and win the 3rd downs. Go Warriors!

  36. Shoko September 2, 2016 10:14 am

Athlon writer thinks Hawaii will only score a field goal against the Wolverines (Prediction: Michigan 49, Hawaii 3). I think this Warriors offense can get a couple of TDs and walk out of the Big House without leaving a goose egg like they did against Ohio State last year. Just play hard, have fun, and more importantly, stay healthy!

  37. ponojr September 2, 2016 10:24 am

I will be happy if UH scores a TD. More happy if no injuries + TD.

  38. A-House September 2, 2016 10:57 am

    Kapahulu:

what hotel u stay? we at the Marriott at the GM Center – several in our travel group went to the game too!!

d1shima arrived last nite and we went to dinner at 5 Guys Hamburger and then to the Greektown Casino where I lost more $$$

OK, will look for you at the tailgate

  39. A-House September 2, 2016 11:04 am

beautiful day for a tour of Detroit – Ford Piquette which houses many of the first assembled Ford autos — glad we did — so interesting! had lunch at the Hockeytown Café with much memorabilia of the Detroit Redwings –this is a short block form the Lions & Tigers stadium which are next to each other

last stop was Motown Museum — so much musical memories from my teen age days

    tomorrow – game day!!

still groggy so time for a nap!

  40. Akamai Okole September 2, 2016 11:18 am

    Great Afternoon All!

    Echoing A-house…

Nice bus tour around Detroit. Ford’s 1st factory was amazing!

If I was a hockey fan, I’d be very excited about the new stadium being built for the Red Wings. Lotsa redevelopment going on in that neck o’ the woods. Pizza. Pizza.

Very cool standing in Studio A. 😎

Should be a quiet nite then all he11 breaks loose at Noon tomorrow!

  41. Sangamon Keith September 2, 2016 11:55 am

    #26 akuhead2.

I think the league is using a different geographic linkage … as a result they have UNLV with San Diego State or Fresno State … Nevada with San Jose State … Hawaii with San Diego State or Fresno. Not sure why … but my guess would be closeness of campuses and similar recruiting territories. I’d also guess these linkages work better for travel needs of other sports … which UH has no role in. I’m no guru so I could easily be wrong.

  42. Da Punchbowl Kid September 2, 2016 11:59 am

    Former UH Athlete @#12 –

Amen and amen! An on campus stadium which UH owns and operates and takes all the revenue from was a dream of JJ’s. Maybe Rolo will be the guy to right that ship.
The Big House is a beautiful facility for sure. I wonder what its seating capacity would be if they had seats like dear old Aloha Stadium?

    In any case…

    GO WARRIORS!!!
    WOMP DA WOVERINSESESES!!!
