UH still hasn’t picked No. 1 QB

UH coach Nick Rolovich said it will be “probably a few more days” before a starting quarterback is named.

Ikaika Woolsey, Aaron Zwahlen and Dru Brown are considered the top three quarterbacks. Woolsey appears to be the top contender.

“I think guys are fighting,” Rolovich said. “I feel pretty good about Ikaika, Aaron and Dru right now as far as being able to run the offense and execute. We’ll probably get a few more days in, and probably shoot for Wednesday” to announce the No. 1 QB.

Naming the starter needs to be done, but all three will be needed to play. It looks like it’s going to be leader by committee until someone proves worthy of being the chairman of the field! Who will shine bright under the southern lights?

    Go Warriors!
    Let’s Go Bows!

    4. Lets be real though. The starter is Woolsey. Just accept it, hope for the best, and see how things play out… I know fans like official announcements. But I am 98.992 % sure Woolsey takes the first snap at QB vs Cal.

  6. haka August 15, 2016 11:31 am

Let’s be real? What’s your point to my post? I am 98.993% sure more than one will play QB vs Cal.

    6. The point is you claim a QB needs to be named. I’m telling you that the coaches and players and probably even media know its Woolsey without the official title. So no, a QB doesn’t have to be officially named.

And I am 100% sure you don’t have the foresight to determine how many QBs will play vs Cal considering you don’t know if Hawaii will be winning, losing, or ability to predict injuries.

The safe choice for Rolo is Woolsey.
Keeping AZ and DB in the mix also means the former could have a quick hook or the fact that the latter two have great potential.

Like jeezy33, I have been touting all along for Dru Brown to somehow make an impact.

AZ has all the potential to be a very good one. Perhaps the rust has finally started to shake off.

I trust that whomever starts in Sydney will have a long look. The real test will be with the oline (and the D). If we can hold our own, then the QB has a great shot at success.

  13. haka August 15, 2016 12:04 pm

    Ha! I did that!
    Really that was for #8

  14. Derek August 15, 2016 12:07 pm

We need backups to be able to come in and do the job when called upon. Wittek played well in the first game against Colorado last year in the opener, then he got hurt in the very next game. Things happen. That fact that 3 guys are in the mix tells me that these guys are fighting hard to earn the coaches and teams’s trust to do the job. I don’t have a favorite. Whoever wins the game for us or plays the best against Cal will likely get more snaps the following week to prepare for Michigan. Rolo wants to get the feel as to the one or couple things that will decide this competition, where it be decision making, moving the chains, scoring, leadership, taking care of ball, or some other thing. If it was experience, the competition should have been settled already. Bottom line, let’ s rally behind all these QBs because we probably need all of these guys to play because it’s a long season.

Another reason announcements aren’t a big deal:

I think Tyler Graunke was announced starting QB around a decade ago. Colt Brennan, a jc transfer sophomore ended that quickly.

Brent Rausche was announced starting QB when he came in. Then Greg Alexander and eventually Bryant Moniz took over.

So I guess the best news is there are 3 capable qbs, minus chow coached teams where he ore maturely handed the keys to QB job in graham and Wittek ..

#15 … “3-Prong” … you making me hungry. Them Aussie Oysters are the best in the world but the Shrimp & Lobsters are ‘brok da mouth too … remember VB (Victoria Bitters) NOT Foster’s.

JMHO … wouldn’t hurt if “Rolo” played his top 3 QB’s in the first 4 games. It’s the “preseason” of the schedule and will better prepare us for the MWC schedule as well as the next few years.

  20. Bryson August 15, 2016 12:38 pm

I can see IW starting against Cal,but looking at the future I wouldn’t be surprised is DB or AZ is named starter after a few games, they both have multiple years remaining at Hawai’i and there are quite a few young receiver’s as well so I could see one of them given the reigns to build continuity, one of the reasons I believe the 2006 & 2007 teams were so successful

  21. Da Punchbowl Kid August 15, 2016 12:39 pm

Having met 3-Prong I can say two things on his behalf – make that three things – he has impeccable table manners, even at a buffet, he is super nice guy and good fun to talk to, and last but not least, he’s a former All-State lineman from back in the day. He be fine down under. *coughozomiyagecough* 😉

    Howzit Tsaiko’s,

Does anyone know what the status to Kennedy T. is?

Also I am excited to see what we have. I have said it before. With all the talk about how Woolsey has played for us before. He was never designed for the offense that Chow wanted to run. He was recruited by Rolo to run the offense that role wanted to run. So maybe he is doing better now because it fits him. Woolsey needs to stay in the pocket better. But he is a QB who I think fits the read option, read pass type of offense.

” The University of Hawai’i at Manoa Athletics Department announces the debut of “Speak Up,” a 30-second public service announcement (PSA) addressing the issue of violence. Four of the university’s head coaches are featured in this PSA produced by Oceanic Time Warner Cable …

  28. Former UH Athlete August 15, 2016 1:31 pm

Time to come out of hibernation…

All I got to say is that Rolo not naming a QB by now means that nobody has separated themselves, which isn’t good, even though signs are pointing to Woosley.

There’s no need to strategically hide or conceal your starting QB in a non-conference game, let alone coming from a team picked last place in every pre-season mag out there.

It’s not like opposing DCs are overly concerned about preparing about a career sub 50% passer and a bunch of QBs with nearly zero FBS experience combined. DCs are more concerned over what Rolo’s offense will look like since this will be the first time he gets to run an offense in his full direction, but once MWC play starts, there will be enough tape to diagnose Rolo’s offense… which leads me back to my concern over not naming a QB already.

  29. H-Man August 15, 2016 1:37 pm

2012 UH v. USC opening game at the Coliseum, everyone knows that USC will pass to wide receiver Marqise Lee. Didn’t matter. First play from scrimmage to open the game, UH defensive secondary burned, QB Matt Barkley to WR Marqise Lee for 75-yard TD. That felt like a punch to the liver.

Watching JJs quarterback the kid has a long way to go but has the skills and gets the ball off quickly. Could be one to watch.

Team needs a leader. On offense that usually would be the quarterback. I really don’t trust stats. I want to see for myself. But Rolo needs to name someone asap. Then they can focus on Cal. I hope it happens soon. Coaches should know what they got by now.

  33. H-Man August 15, 2016 3:18 pm

  34. Da Punchbowl Kid August 15, 2016 4:12 pm

I’m not an expert, nor do I have a favorite amongst the finalist for QB. But, it might be that Rolo is giving the lone returning starter a chance to prove that he’s the guy.

Whatever it is, Rolo, and all the starters have my vote. I see enough talent and depth on this team for lots of fine tuning and subbing if need be.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

Maybe it’s not who’s #1 that’s hanging up the QB question, but rather who’s #2. Ideally, both should share a lot of strengths to keep the consistency and minimize drop off and to build for the coming years.

BTW… what was on today’s Nakoa lunch menu?

  45. cocobean August 15, 2016 8:43 pm

Chow was as old school as they come when handling QBs. Once you name a starter you stick with the guy. Chow took poor QB play as his responsibility, that poor QB play was on him for not coaching the guy up properly. But alas it seemed to me the more he coached a guy up the more tentative he played not wanting to repeat mistakes. He seemed to castrate the position. He took all the swagger out of the position and tried to turn all his QBs into game managers rather than play makers.

I think Rolo has a better understanding of what it takes to win at the level we’re at and the personnel we have. For mid mid-major like us it usually takes a play making QB who can keep the chains moving whether with his arm, legs or moxie.
Rolo gives me the impression he’ll fit his schemes and play calling to fit the strenghts of whoever he chooses as starter. I really trust Rolo’s eye to see who gives the team the best chance to win.

  46. Steve p August 15, 2016 8:59 pm

AZ is the four star guy and was said by espn to be the next Johnny Manziel.. play the best , not just the Hawaiian. IW is alright but we have never been good with him at QB.. Maybe another year of experience will help that ???? I dont know.

  53. 3-Prong August 16, 2016 6:32 am

Did Rolo say he liked what he saw from:

    1) Ikaika, Aaron, Brown
    Or
    2) Ikaika and Brown

…kinda mumbled in the middle there.

  54. Hank August 16, 2016 6:32 am

As long as it’s taken makes me thinks that it is … Dru Brown.

IW has three-years of tape and had the spring …and could not pull away from Brown who just came aboard. I guess that the coaches must like what they see in Brown but are struggling with the “safe bet” in IW. I hope they go with Dru.

  55. Shoko August 16, 2016 6:33 am

Sad to hear about Genki’s. I usually go there at least once when I go back home. Always enjoyed the quality unlike some other places up here on the mainland where the sushi is served on a petri dish. Hope this doesn’t affect future business.

People, jeezy says get real, it’s Woolsey so relax; no need for an announcement.

  58. Shoko August 16, 2016 6:43 am

So, do you go with a veteran QB who is in his last season and give him the majority of reps because it gives us the best chance of winning games, or do you go with first-year QB who will experience growing pains as he develops and learns the offense, but will comeback next season more experienced?
