Monday checkin: Spieler, DOVO, Kaufman, etc

Dropped by camp today.
Looks like Kaleo Baxter will be the DOVO for women’s indoor and beach. Announcement pending on finalizing paperwork.

as mentioned earlier, Faith Ma’aflala (Kamehameha) has transferred home from Southern Utah, will walk on. That will bring the roster number to 19. would not be surprised if one of the walk-ons redshirt.

Spiler has moved on to the semifinals. Voting still open to get her into the finals

Cindy, just asking your opinion here. What are the odds do you think Fisher is our new HC?

I know Sealy and Wong are out there, but they are still relatively new to those schools. Hard to see them leave so early.

I think Fisher could make an excellent pick. He has some serious national connections and some studs could follow him here.

Based on UH’s budget Shoji’s successor will probably be young with minimal experience (salary in the $50,000 – $60,000 range.) Moreover, UH likes young coaches because they are hungry and inventive.

Older coaches are set in doing things the “old” way. Terry Liskevych, formerly of Oregon State, is such an example. Liskevych still used the “go left high and wide to the outside” strategy. UH put on a blocking clinic and crushed OSU when they last played.

Shoji is an exception, due to an open mind on new ideas.

why does Sealy’s name keep coming up. He has one of the best jobs in womens volleyball. He is not coming back unfortunately.

WHAT DEY GOIN PAY DA NEXT COACH SINCE DEY ARE SO FRICKIN CHEAP WID SHOJI’S SALARY? NOBODY DESERVES TO GET MORE DEN DA BEST COACH INDA COUNTRY.

  7. haleiwacrossfitter July 19, 2016 2:24 pm

There is no way in heck is one of the top volleyball programs in the history of women’s collegiate volleyball and the most successful program at the University of Hawaii going to pay their new coach $50,000-$60,000. That is just not going to happen. You might as well just end the program if that is the case. No one…not even a DECENT assistant from a Division II program, will take that kind of pay.

What makes you think that is the budget for the new women’s vball head coach?

  8. haleiwacrossfitter July 19, 2016 2:29 pm

I would like to see the Beach team hire a full time head coach….and would love that hire to be Kevin Wong. I don’t think our beach team, if we really want it to contend for a beach NC, should have a PT coach that has to split his time. Especially with recruiting. I feel each team deserves to have their own recruiter.

  9. blunite July 19, 2016 2:44 pm

My bad, these figures may be slightly dated but in the vicinity. Not counting perks and bonuses.

Men’s VB Head Coach starting salary: $53,820
Women’s VB Head Coach starting salary: $76,440

Salary commensurate with experience and results. Not to mention booster club donations which could up the total. I could see Charlie Wade applying for Shoji’s job, it pays better and he has already been there, done that.

Just a question to ask of anyone. Does the Na Wahine hold unsupervised, voluntary practices like the Warriors football team? Thanks.

  11. mauna July 19, 2016 2:55 pm

    8. I totally agree with you on a full time beach coach to contend for the national championship. Top schools such as USC, Florida St, Pepperdine, UCLA, etc. all have full time coaches. I hope the top people esp. the AD have enough foresight to realize this and act accordingly.

  12. mauna July 19, 2016 3:00 pm

    9. Wade is not in the conversation for the WVB head job, period! quote me!

  13. Cindy Luis July 19, 2016 4:54 pm

    1. I think the top contenders will be Sealy and Wong but much depends on when the job opens up. Fisher is building a good resume. The committee’s agenda might be for a female but don’t see anyone with the qualifications or the local ties needed.
    3. because Sealy loves Hawaii.
    6. Would you please stop using all caps?
    8. If they ever go full-time with Beach, I think it would go to Hall. He has said that’s what he’d like to do full-time. UH just got around to hiring a DOVO, which will be shared by indoor and beach. Agree that it’s been tough on Wong and now Hall to do both.
    12. Wade likely would apply if it’s the right scenario. and you can quote me.

  14. Cindy Luis July 19, 2016 4:58 pm

    10. and yes, the Wahine have voluntary open gym, which is basically unsupervised free play. it’s where Taylor got hurt last summer when going up to block a ball (think it was Kahakai hitting)
There is also an offseason conditioning program.

  15. rabbit ears July 19, 2016 5:23 pm

Mike Sealy would be great. I still don’t see it happening. Doesn’t he make a lot more $$ at UCLA.

  16. Astroboy July 19, 2016 6:25 pm

Those opening salaries are usually nowhere near what the final salaries are. If you look at other positions at UH-Manoa, the minimum salary is usually a factor of two lower than what anyone actually gets.

  17. darkfire35 July 19, 2016 7:41 pm

    14. Is the public allowed to attend these open plays? If so, where and when? Mahalo!

  18. Hot July 20, 2016 4:33 am

Southern Utah is where Courtney Lelepali transferred from?

And agree, a LOT of back row players, and also agree at least one would redshirt. I don’t see how Shoji could use them all. He barely got Ponce and Guinasso in last year.

  19. WaWa July 20, 2016 7:38 am

    18. That is correct, Lelepali did transfer from SUU.

  20. haleiwacrossfitter July 20, 2016 11:20 am

I love Wade, always have. But I think he has finally got something going with the men and would like for him to stay there. I would hate to see both the women and the men go through a coaching change at the same time. I don’t think my stomach could handle that.

I wonder why Kevin Wong has never entered into coaching. Maybe the TV thing has gotten really lucrative for him. He’s going to Rio, right?

  21. haleiwacrossfitter July 20, 2016 11:23 am

#15, rabbit, I am sure he does. But money does not always lead to happiness. I have personally left a double figure monthly salary for another drastically lower paying position just because I wanted to be happy going to work.

Not saying Sealy isn’t happy at UCLA, but I do know he LOVES Hawaii….A LOT.

  22. haleiwacrossfitter July 20, 2016 11:27 am

Sorry for rapid back to back posts…

just a funny thought. Wouldn’t it be funny if Kevin was the beach and Scott was in the indoor at UH. 🙂

  23. rage777 July 20, 2016 11:29 am

Did I miss something? Is Coach Shoji retiring? Or is this just speculation when he retires?

  24. Cindy Luis July 20, 2016 1:06 pm

    17. open gym arranged by the athletes on their schedule. not in the arena. usually Klum or Gym 1. It’s not like a real practice or anything. More like pickup games.
    20. Kevin Wong coaches a lot through Spike & Serve, SAS club teams competed at both boys and girls JOs Yes, he is going to Rio. I will have a story on him before the Olympics start.
    22. Don’t see that happening.
    23. You didn’t miss anything. just the usual speculation, sparked by someone asking me my thoughts on who would be the leading candidates.
As I have written a number of times. Shoji has said he doesn’t want a farewell tour so WHEN he decides to retire, it will happen soon after a season is done.
