UH football: OLB/DE pondering retirement
DE/OLB Jeremy Castro is looking into the possibility of pursuing a medical retirement.
Castro has not practiced or played since suffering a back injury against San Diego State the past October. He had played in six games in 2015, including a start at Ohio State, when he amassed five solo tackles.
If the medical retirement is solidified, UH is agreeable to paying for Castro’s two remaining years needed to earn a bachelor’s degree.
As a Vista Murrietta (Calif.) High senior in 2011, Castro received 4-star ratings from Rivals.com and Scout.com. Scout listed Castro as the nation’s No. 21 outside linebacker. ESPN ranked Castro at No. 88 among California football prospects.
Castro signed with UCLA on Feb. 1, 2012, but was ineligible to enroll that fall because he had not met all of the admission criteria. He then earned a qualifying ACT score, enrolled at UCLA in January 2013, and participated in the Bruins’ spring training. After that spring semester, he decided to transfer to UH.
He redshirted in 2013 in accordance with NCAA transfer rules. He played in all 13 games in 2014 and the first six in 2015.
Castro was projected to compete at defensive end this season in the Warriors’ newly implemented 4-3 scheme.

Extending lots of warm aloha and fair sailing to Jeremy Castro for his time on the team and in pursuing his medical degree.
Man I would not wish back problems on anybody. Being healthy and able to play with your kids and grand kids is priceless. But it’s sad on another level because he’s a guy who was just flashing on his potential. Could have made a real difference in a year or two.
Back … spine. Those are areas that are not to be risked.
I think Joe Onosai was a good example. He turned down pursuing an NFL career because of spinal concerns. He’s now living a healthful life.
I hate to say it but if he is even “pondering retiring,” i hope he retires. Like ST said back, spine and head injuries can last your entire life… He will be missed on the field but I hope he thinks about the rest of his life… Best wishes to him whatever he decides…
