Inside game for former Warriors

Nick Rolovich’s other alma mater — the Arena Football League — continues to extend the playing careers of former Warriors. Here’s an update:

> Kody Afusia, offensive lineman: After joining the LA KISS with four games remaining in the 2015 season, he has started every game this year.

> Shane Austin, quarterback: As an AFLer two years ago, Austin was the best QB in Cleveland — sorry, Johnny Manziel — and in December he signed with the Portland Steel. But Austin received an invitation to compete with Saskatchewan of the CFL, and he left the Steel in training camp. After failing to make Saskatchewan’s roster, he returned to Portland three weeks ago — without any fanfare. Despite playing in only three games and a clerical omission — he still is not listed on Portland’s on-line roster — Austin leads the Steel in passing and rushing yards.

> Quinton Pedroza, receiver: Pedroza is auditioning with the KISS, according to former UH receivers coach Luke Matthews. Pedroza has fully recovered from a knee injury that abbreviated his 2015 UH season to six games and five starts. He averaged 12.8 yards per catch last year, as well as handled punt returns.

> Michael Washington, receiver: Washington, who is one of the league’s most energetic players, moved from Portland to Arizona this year. Unhappy at Arizona, he helped engineer a trade to Tampa Bay. Washington, who averaged 105 receptions in his first five AFL seasons, now starts for the Storm.

I think Dave Lefotu also is in the IFL.

  10. BigWave96744 June 2, 2016 11:44 am

Roman Kafentzis is Kurt’s son and a hard hitter like his dad & uncles.

Would love to have him and his QB cousin Austin (Kyle’s son) become Rainbow Warriors like their dads

  11. BigWave96744 June 2, 2016 11:47 am

Oh yeah, Dave Lefotu plays for the Spokane Empire

Anyone need tickets to the game in Tucson, AZ on Sept. 17; I just bought a block of 30 seats at the 50 yd line behind our UH team bench @$48 each.

Or tickets to the game at San Jose St. on Oct 8; I got priority seating right behind our UH team bench at the 50 yd line ($30 each).

And to the game in Michigan Sept. 3?
Got a group of 32 going–$65 for end zone.

Email: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com or text me at 415-324-0585.
Or other road games at AF, SDSU or Fresno.

The fact that Roman has offers from the service academies as well as Columbia and Brown, tells me he has major grades and test scores. Let me see if the little bird can talk to KK and get more info…..standby.

    Howzit Tsaikos!

for you trivia buffs – are there any families with more than 2 generations of UH athletes? I can only think of 1 off the top of my head – Charley Kahuanui/Shelley Kahuanui Fey/Kupono Fey. Any others?

  17. clyde June 2, 2016 2:19 pm

jm9876, they also have the other wing of that family – Harry, Charlene Kahuanui Christenson, Micah Christenson.

Does Lance Kahuanui, who might have been one of MadDog’s teammates, have any kids?

  23. burro sabio June 2, 2016 7:00 pm

Sorry, didn’t read carefully. Charlene went UH-Hilo and Micah went USC.

    Matt Cooper is killing.

Today: 8 innings pitched; 11 Ks; 2 hits; no earned runs, in a win against Carolina.

He had 12 strikeouts in his last outing. He is 3-4 with a 3.22 ERA. Winston-Salem is a bad team; that’s why his record is subpar.

    K/BB: 86/18 in 67 innings.

Congratulations Kekai Rios for being selected to play in the Cape Cod League, but Cooper is where he is today, largely because he skipped summer league ball and rested his arm.

Matt Cooper is poised to be Mike Trapasso’s fourth big leaguer.

  26. Dominic Une June 3, 2016 4:37 am

Just wondering how much money these players make?, or is it worth their time?

  27. NorthShoreFan June 3, 2016 8:46 am
