UH does not overlook Punahou LB

Former UH football player Keith Ah Yuen is a Renaissance Man who has added a new talent: Visionary.

Ah Yuen is predicting that his nephew, Punahou linebacker La‘akea Look, will develop into a top contributor to the Warriors’ special teams.

“He’s not the fastest or the biggest, but he has an uncanny ability to make plays,” Ah Yuen said.

Look, who is 6 feet and 225 pounds, said he has received acceptance to UH and will join the Warriors as a walk-on this summer.

Look said he is impressed with the UH coaches, a perception confirmed after attending some of the Warriors’ spring practices in April.

“I like the tempo (of the practices) and the enthusiasm of the players,” Look said.

Look was an outside linebacker for two years at Punahou before moving to the middle in 2015. He called the defensive plays.

“It was fun and challenging, too,” Look said of the play-calling.

Look was named as the ILH’s 2015 Defensive Player of the Year.

Look said he was inspired to become a linebacker after studying the career of one of the NFL’s former greats.

“My biggest idol was Ray Lewis,” Look said. “He was a natural leader who could bring everyone together.”

Ah Yuen said Look reminds him of Matt Wright, who was teammates with UH coach Nick Rolovich in the early 2000s. Wright, Pisa Tinoisamoa and Chris Brown were the starting linebackers under Kevin Lempa, who returned this year for his second tenure as UH defensive coordinator. Brown was Look’s youth-league coach with the Kahalu‘u Broncos.

Look also has an artistic side. He draws Polynesian tribal designs.

Chris Brown was the strongest Warrior. He benched more that 500 lbs and was a beast on the field.

  2. Stephen Tsai May 24, 2016 8:54 am

UH has had some strong players: Chris Brown, Vince Manuwai, Lawrence Wilson, Stephen Gonzales …
The strongest, pound for pound, might be Daniel Libre.

re: last couple comments from previous post.

Gifford is off suspension and back with the team.

UH was after the maui kid but no more the grades.

  4. Da Punchbowl Kid May 24, 2016 8:58 am

Had a chance to meet Look and his father this spring. Nice folks, those two.

The younger Look has good size and certainly the DNA. And from the brief conversation I had with him, I could sense that he has the heart. Anybody who is named ILH will likely be an asset going in.

    Best wishes to Look.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  6. tmanz May 24, 2016 9:32 am

Houston Ala might be the strongest of em all..

ST is Kumoku Noa still planning on playing for UH

  7. justsomeguy May 24, 2016 9:39 am

A roommate of mine while at UH in the Wainani apartments was a LB. He would say hitting Libre in practice would just wear you out….He was 6’1 220 and Libre was 5’7 ish and like 180lbs.

Luckily there didn’t seem to be too many full contact days under Jones. Plus, I personally saw Libre squat well over 500…and like I said, he was maybe 180 lbs. MAYBE. I remember squatting 315 when I was 175 and thinking my legs were guna break. Braddah was STRONG.

Anyone need tickets to the game in Tucson, AZ on Sept. 17; I just bought a block of 25 seats at the 50 yd line behind our UH team bench @$48 each.

Or tickets to the game at San Jose St. on Oct 8; I got priority seating right behind our UH team bench at the 50 yd line ($30 each).

And to the game in Michigan Sept. 3
Got a group of 30 going–$65 for end zone.

Is it confirmed that Gifford is back?

  12. BigWave96744 May 24, 2016 11:28 am

Other “StrongMen” were Joe Onosai and UHFAN808’s pal, Joey Cadiz

  13. BigWave96744 May 24, 2016 11:31 am

Speaking of Joey, he still does local strong man events, is a lifeguard at Waimea Bay.

He and David Stant charge huge 20+ waves. Men who ride mountains…

  14. Boolakanaka May 24, 2016 11:59 am

Strong…begin and ends with Joe Onosai. That said , Stephen Paea, pushing out 400 pounds, 5 reps, on an INCLINE bench???!? Is certainly cray-cray strong….see:http://www.oregonlive.com/nfl/index.ssf/2016/05/watch_former_oregon_state_dl_s.html

Just got back from Australia and New Zealand and there are definitely some boys down there who physically look like they could excel in American Football. In NZ rugby is played everywhere and some of the boys on the field looked very impressive. I’m sure we could find some LB’s, DE’s, Saftey types of players out there. Didn’t see too many OL looking guys or true speed players but lots of athletic types. Especially with a lot of teams teaching rugby tackling techniques these guys already have a head start.

Could not resist-Wear what the players Wear- LAPW program. If your an employer or even family members donate 1000.00 you get 20 UA shirts with the Hawaii Football on the front and “live Aloha play Warrior on the back with a company logo or as I’m doing personalizing it “Maddog 50 proudly supports”. I just can’t help myself I love this program and want it to do good. Doing my part to market support and spread the word-call Kim, Joyce or Cody at Na Koa for details. Thanks for tolerating but these are, great shirts with a great message! Go Warriors

Former RB Mike Brewster was pretty strong for his size as well. Wasn’t he a former powerlifter?

  20. islandman May 24, 2016 3:36 pm

How can Gifford be back when his trial hasn’t begun, i think ?

  21. Jeezy33 May 24, 2016 5:47 pm

The day the arrest happened, I knew Gifford wouldn’t miss a game.

    Luke 6

    Love for Enemies
27 “But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you.28 Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you.

Do not let sin control the way you live;* do not give in to sinful desires. Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin

Again I say, don’t get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people. Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants.

false “al” — very disappointed in your posts — yes, your 1st amendment rights are protected only because there are others out there who make sure you have the right of free speech – come out and ID yourself – don’t hide behind “al”

perhaps you are looking to be “banned” from this blog?

  27. al May 24, 2016 7:18 pm

Just so you know this is my first and only post of the day.
I don’t use classless profanity nor would I blatantly ridicule another.

    #29 Real Al,

Your friends know you too well to question your you when a “fake” surfaces and makes stupid comments under your name. We got your back!!!

Wish there was some way he/she could be banned. Just no place for comments like that. No class at all.

  29. Da Punchbowl Kid May 24, 2016 8:53 pm

There can be only one “al”. And he is my brother. If you knew the real “al” you would say that too.

NYC’s police, firefighters brawl at charity football game

The NYPD said in a statement Tuesday that football “is a competitive sport whether it’s the NFL Super Bowl or the annual NYPD-FDNY challenge.”

The Fire Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Police Department won Sunday’s game 29-13.

    30.

I am an animal rights activist.

I sit in the lunch room with my two protein bars and banana and say nothing.

Not even when they bust out the pig blood and pig ear.

Not even when a co-worker cuts the Frito-Lays Corn Chips in half and pours the crumbs down her throat.

Nobody wants to be lectured to.

New QB Dru Brown possibly on the way. College of San Mateo 6’0″ 200 and an incoming soph. Looks like a scholie guy too. Things are ramping up now. Also just read on Salt Lake Tribune about a DL Utah grad with one to play looking for a place to transfer with playing time to offer. Been a rotation guy but projected starters are juniors. Hmmm…6’1″ 320 tackle type.
