UH football: Joas, Gener get pro shots
Former UH running back Pereese Joas and linebacker Julian Gener are getting opportunities to possibly continue their football careers.
The Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League reportedly invited Joas to their training camp.
Joas performed well at UH’s pro day in March. Listed at 5 feet 5 1/8 and 173 pounds, Joas produced these results:
> 4.54 seconds in the 40-yard dash —
> 4.16 seconds in the pro-agility drill
> 6.95 seconds in the L-drill
> 33 1/2 inches in vertical jump
> 9 feet, 9 inches in the broad jump
Gener leaves today for Japan, where he will audition for the Nojima Sagamihara Rise of the X League. “If all goes well, I’ll get a contract,” Gener said.
Sagamihara is a 30-minute, bullet-train ride from Tokyo.
A few summers ago, Joas experienced homelessness after his financial aid expired. When Gener learned of Joas’ situation, he allowed Joas to sleep in his dorm room until Joas’ financial aid was renewed.
Gener earned a degree in December, a few weeks after completing his UH eligibility.
This past Saturday, Joas became the first member of his family to earn a bachelor’s degree.

Good for Joas and Gener! This is the kind of story we like to see – persistance and passion pays off. It was kind of Gener to show aloha to Pereese the way he did.

Joas should have been on the field more like others. That ship dun sailed-congrats to Tui Eli for being named to Rimington watch list! This year this group has a chance to break out-Allen Eli Waa Leo K, and a few others. Go Warriors!!!

I’m sure I’m quite behind the times with this, but I just learned that Dave Aranda is the new DC at LSU. Wisconsin has had a top ten defense each year Aranda has lead, and they were 2nd overall in 2015. Super proud of the guy. Will watch eagerly to see what he does with that of NFL talent down in Baton Rouge.
Check this out: He’s got two potential 1st round picks at CB in White and Toliver. SS Jamal Adams is a easily a 1st round pick. ILB Beckwith could be a top ten pick as could DT Godchaux and DE Neal. ALL 11 defensive starters at LSU this fall will get looks in the NFL, the one’s I’ve mention are merely the probable 1st round selections. Aranda must be downright giddy.
And I didn’t even mention the freshman LSU just brought in….. #6 and #13 DT in the country, as well #2, #3, and #12 CB’s in the country…..and the #5 Safety prospect as well………..this defense has 5* players in the 3 deep. It’s insane.

Had a chance to speak with Ralph Kaspari yesterday. Ralph played in the late 60s and moved permanently to Oahu in 71—gonna meet up with him as he will be in town(Chicago) next week visiting. Gonna get a chance to meet Jim Schultz who lives in my area next week-Jim is in the record book for receiving yards and receptions in the late 60’s. I am trying to reach out to former players in the greater Chicago area and invite them to my Na Koa “funraiser” golf outing in August. We typically generate 3 to 4k to donate to the program-it would be great to have Jim attend-Go Warriors!!!!
MD50, I remember going to games at the old Honolulu Stadium to watch players like FB Ralph Kaspari (’67-69)and WR Jim Schultz (’67-68). Also QB Larry Arnold (’67-69), DL Larry Cole (’67; Dallas Cowboys ’68-80) and TB Larry Sherrer (’69-71; Dr. Larry Sherrer, Opthamology, Lihue, Kauai). I became hooked on UH football, in part, because of players like them. They were exciting to watch.
