UH football: Riding LEMO to graduation

Since the 1980s, California has endured cutbacks in after-school, extra-curricular programs.

The LEMO Foundation has helped fill the void, providing an encompassing program (academics, athletics, life skills) for Northern California youths from at-risk or under-funded situations. LEMO stands for Liahona Motu, which translates to “compass” and “rock.” According to its Web site, LEMO provides youths “with the tools (compass) to navigate life’s challenges and foundation (rock) to go forward with confidence.”

There also is a pay-it-forward element, with older LEMO participants eventually becoming leaders — “playmakers” — to younger students.

Leo Koloamatangi participated in LEMO as a high school student. Koloamatangi was the first high school commitment to Norm Chow’s inaugural 2012 UH recruiting class.

This past spring training, Koloamatangi practiced as the Warriors’ No. 1 left guard.

Yesterday, Koloamatangi walked the walk at UH’s commencement ceremony, earning his bachelor’s degree in four years. He is expected to pursue a master’s degree.

That accomplishment is a credit to LEMO, Na Koa (which pays for summer sessions) and, of course, Koloamatangi’s diligence and intelligence.

Here’s another LEMO motto: “Do not expect to accomplish your dreams if you’re not willing to help others accomplish theirs.”

Leo’s younger brother, Meffy, a UH defensive end and LEMO alumnus, also is on a fast track to earning a bachelor’s degree.
