UH football: Patterson earning 2nd-chance points

During Saturday’s team drills, wideout Don’Yeh Patterson dropped a sure touchdown pass at the end of a go route. As Patterson jogged to the end of the line of X receivers, he was ordered to line up for another rep. This time Patterson caught a pass on a crossing pattern.

“They gave me a chance to make up for (the drop) right away,” Patterson said.

Patterson is making the most of second opportunities. He redshirted as a freshman in 2014, and then at the end of the 2015 spring semester, he decided to leave the team because of a family issue.

“It was personal,” Patterson said. “My dad got sick. I felt I had to be with him last semester.”

After his father regained good health, Patterson re-enrolled at UH this semester. He is back with the Warriors — but without a scholarship.

“Sometimes you have to do what you have to do,” Patterson said. “This is where my heart is. I had to come back.”

Rolovich, who was hired as head coach in December, cleared each player’s browser history.

“He gave me an opportunity to come back, to have a fresh start,” Patterson said. “He gave everyone a chance to show what they can do.”

Defensive coordinator Kevin Lempa has become a hands-on instructor during these spring drills:

Last week, the paper inadvertently published the wrong picture of middle linebacker Rashaan Falemalu. So here’s the real deal:

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

  3. tom April 4, 2016 8:25 am

    Good morning requires moderation?
    Howsabout mediocre morning, Hawaii!

  4. H-Man April 4, 2016 8:45 am

The receivers look good already. Coupled with their height, they can sky to get passes. Our coaching staff will only get them better and game ready. Don ‘Yeh brings more good depth to this group. Welcome back.

No need to apologize ST. Your pictures are always very much appreciated.

  6. Da Punchbowl Kid April 4, 2016 9:38 am

Great pics – keep ’em coming, Tsai!

Keep reading that these coaches do a lot of teaching and less yelling. That’s a good thing. Teaching and motivation are key.

  7. Boolakanaka April 4, 2016 9:57 am

    Ursua, via Halawa Valley—-cheeeee!!!

  8. BigFan April 4, 2016 10:46 am

I was thinking that Ursua was light and can put on some weight. While that may be true, he sure is put together.

  9. islandman April 4, 2016 10:47 am

Regarding the previous post topic comments on the prior regime: Remember Norm had several “fun” things too such as talent contests, a dance off with the soccer team, pool party with Ben Clarke doing his amazing back flip dive or whatever it was, shave ice day, etc.

Bigfan, Ursua’s pops, Lario, has the same build–even to this day, at age 55. By the time John gets to be a junior, he is going be a beast physically.

  12. islandman April 4, 2016 10:59 am

Here is one practice schedule, at the bottom of this article:

It’s great that the coaching staff and the program is bringing back fan interest.

  15. Rodney April 4, 2016 11:59 am

Ursa was a pretty good Chow
    Recruit.Will Rollo continue
    with LDS recruits?

  16. Steve p April 4, 2016 12:50 pm

Why LDS recruits? A man’s faith doesn’t make him a good player…regardless of his religion he either has it or he doesn’t have it. Good grief, what a stupid loaded question!

  17. What??? April 4, 2016 1:40 pm

25 year-old seniors often have an advantage over 23 year-old seniors. ST once wrote that the Pac-12 didn’t want BYU in their conference for that very reason. I will refrain from writing my thoughts about comment #14.

  18. legistlature April 4, 2016 2:04 pm

Can’t wait to see Netane Muti battle with Fred Ulu-Perry
This is two players who will hit you after you turn your back. The proof is in the video. Take it easy now fellahs on the responses. Chee hoo
Anyone see the video couple days ago of Kennedy and Fred. Don’t bring up the whistle did not blow yet. The Defensive player’s back was turned. This is how injuries can take a player out for good. Watch it in slow mo Kennedy could’ve hurt his right arm as he came down.
See you all at practice in the morning at 7am.

  19. Haleakala April 4, 2016 2:07 pm

It’s an innocent question. He’s not saying all recruits. Nothing wrong with asking.

  20. Bryson April 4, 2016 3:18 pm

Stephen do you know if Stubblefield is out for the spring didn’t see him at practice on Sat unless his practice jersey number was different

  21. panda96720 April 4, 2016 3:19 pm

Hmmmmm mormons make good football players….Seems like 2 QB’s have a few Super Bowl rings to their name.

Have never seen a Muslim QB though ?

  22. Rodney April 4, 2016 3:43 pm

#14 LDS boys get to retreat and comeback as men
    I’m just saying
    Please don’t get upset!

  23. SteveM April 4, 2016 4:01 pm

Attending the UH opener in Sydney?

If so, please email me or post here on the blog for inclusion in the road game listing and get-together planner. In this case, please include your Panda or Non-Stop tour group number… hey, you might be in the same group.

    http://stevem.altervista.org/away16.html

Also accepting listing for the other away games this year.

  24. Boolakanaka April 4, 2016 4:43 pm

Panda, while I can’t think off the top of my head of a Muslim NFL QB, some of the all-time greats in sports have been Muslim, including Ali and KA-Jabaar. The most recent super bowl winners include Aqib Talib

#9- You are right – I stand, er, sit corrected. To be sure the other coaching regimes have had fun with the players. Always a good thing, that.

But, a balloon fight between coaches and players, complete with drone shots and a music vid has raised the bar. Rolo has been raising the bar in many facets of the program, we’ll see how those changes play out. He definitely is a player’s coach so far. I like that.

What’s important now is that the joy in the hearts of players will translate into fire in their bellies. Lots of work to do, but as always, we hope for the best.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  26. Da Punchbowl Kid April 4, 2016 5:21 pm

    Hey Boola! 😉

  27. Inyoface April 4, 2016 5:50 pm

Welcome back ST! Good to see the boys back in uniform. Special shout out to Mr. Bumatai on a speedy recovery. One of, if not the best to ever do it. Was good to see the basketbows bring pride back to the islands and UH sports on a national level. Go Bows!

  28. NorthShoreFan April 4, 2016 7:04 pm

Me thinks the Q about LDS players was more along the line of having to wait 2 years for them to play if they decide to go on a mission. Not sure what it does to your recruiting and the holes it might make in your roster.
Q…if a kid you recruited decides to go on a two year mission, are you then able to get someone like a JC kid who may have only two years to play to fill that slot? There by allowing you to “over” recruit for that year?

  29. NorthShoreFan April 4, 2016 8:04 pm

One of the best NCAA basketball games on record! Championship or otherwise!

  30. leron April 5, 2016 12:35 am

The name “Ursua” reminds me of Ursula Andress. Mighty fine woman back in the day.

  31. BigFan April 5, 2016 12:52 am

#30, Re: Ursula Andress, she was put together too, lol.

Boo, if as you say he will take after his dad, I look forward to some great years from John.

    Good morning Tsaikos….

    Whew…been a long time.
