Thursday checkin

Wanted to carry over the discussion from previous thread on MPSF/Big West split should UCSD come over to the Big West. It would allow the Big West to sponsor men’s volleyball. They only need 6 teams and currently have 5 with UH, The Beach, CSUN, UCSB and UCI

The MPSF would then be comprised of the remaining teams from the Pac-12, WCC and DII Cal Baptist. To answer someone’s question, the Pac-12 is not going to sponsor men’s volleyball. And as pointed out, UH would not be staying in the MPSF, they would move over to the Big West with all their other sports.

What will be interesting is if the Big West decides to expand further to include schools such as Concordia and Grand Canyon. Another option is to allow those two schools to be an affiliate member in men’s volleyball only.

BTW, with Jasper Rhodes leaving the team and going back home, the Warriors have added Kamehameha graduate Kahiau Machado to the roster. A true freshman, he is a DS who will redshirt.

If the split occurs and with only six members each, then the would just rely on the regular season for a champion? Or maybe do you see them having some sort of collaboration of some sort between the two conferences? I would imagine the lack of a conference tournament could hurt the teams in a way for consideration for the NCAAs?

it’s funny that the pac-12 does not want to sponsor men’s volleyball … but they were all to happy to put out a men’s volleyball pac-12 all-century. they won’t sponsor a sport, but are all too happy to take credit for the accomplishments of its athletes? i know it’s all about promotion … but that’s just lame.

Wow didn’t know all this was gonna happen, probably was in the works for some time, BUT the only thing I am HOPING is that doesn’t weaken UH by ending up in some conference that sucks. MPSF is crazy good, year in and year out top 10 teams in the country are in MPSF conference and that makes UH good b/c we have to compete with them, and we ourselves are at times ranked in the top 10.

    4.

The big west is a good conference. There’s UH, long beach and UC Irvine as the definite top three

  6. Andrew February 11, 2016 11:43 pm

Then again CSUN and Northridge are ahead of Irvine now. But long beach is top ranked now right? And UH is top 5. You could make the argument the big west is the stronger part of the MPSF

The Big West forming their own volleyball conference would mean an automatic berth for the conference champ into the NCAA tournament. Sounds like a win-win.

Last night UC Irvine won at UCLA. 5th set was 20-18. The MPSF gauntlet has begun!

Charlie always says to just look at the loss column. Currently UH, Stanford, LBSU, BYU & UCLA are all bunched at the top with 2 losses each.

I think a Big West volleyball conference would be good as long as we get to see the Bruins, the Trojans, and the Indians every year or so. BYU and Pepperdine would also be missed. On another subject; I sure wish we could have kept Huff happy with volleyball. She is a great athlete.

    new thread up for Friday.

    2. as Ki points out, a new conference would get an automatic berth.
The ideal would be to create an 8-team playoff. wrote about the scenario the week UCSD was here.

    3. agree. mentioned that when the all-century team came out.

    4. The Big West would not be sucky.

    6. so old school Ron. I wish the Stanford regents would have gone with Robber Barons as the student body voted when changing the Indians to the Cardinal. What it would do would allow the MPSF/Big West to play each other for RPI purposes.
Huff’s heart wasn’t in volleyball. She was always more comfortable with basketball. It was apparent when she wore basketball shorts to volleyball practices and wore her basketball gear on the Europe trip instead of Wahine volleyball gear.
