Very nice banquet for the Wahine last night. Both the Gov. and Mayor came and stayed for the entire thing. From what I was told, that is a rarity.
Best comment of the night from Shoji, opening his remarks telling the Gov he promised he wouldn’t ask for money for the department but that Ige consider the PowerBall with money going to UH athletic department.

Gov’s speech clearly showed what a fan of Wahine volleyball was, going back to Klum Gym days. Team received copies of the state proclamation declaring Sunday, Jan. 17, Rainbow Wahine Day in Hawaii.
Spring match will by Friday, March 18, vs. Iowa State at 7 p.m. Apparently there was a conflict with the arena, a concert I think, that had been holding up the dates of that weekend.
Shoji mentioned that the three Pac-12 teams coming out …. tentatively since the contracts aren’t signed … Arizona, Washington and UCLA. Other teams likely coming out are Pepperdine, Kansas State, Missouri State and North Dakota. Will check with him later today on the other two since he didn’t remember.
I recall that Shoji mentioned Pepperdine and Santa Clara as tournament teams.

I think that’s at great schedule. Kansas State and Missouri State were solid on RPI last season. And we can get revenge on UW in Hawaii.
Still no Nebraska for a regular season match? We’ve had a final four team visit the past few years to open the season. Kansas State and UDub are good, but I’d like to see a Final Four team invited to the tourneys every year.
Looks like a very challenging schedule for the Wahine next year considering how hard it is to get the very top teams to come here. Good Job Coach! Also, I was so impressed with the men’s team skill at every phase of the game. Our guys are really good, the best team I can remember, but apparently everyone else has also improved. I think if Mol and Iain continue to improve we will be in the hunt at the end of the season. The men’s game is like watching a heavy-weight fight. Very nerve wracking!

Washington loses a lot but should still be top 25, Arizona and UCLA bring back a lot of talent. Pretty good schedule so far. Disappointed with no B1G teams, hopefully someone like Michigan State is the last one. Also surprised at no Missouri, with Kan being a senior and all.
I’m guessing Pepperdine will be here for a two match series?

So let me get this straight.
The Governor is a big fan of Wahine volleyball, stays for the whole banquet, even gives a speech talking about the Klum Gym days and presents an official “Rainbow Wahine Day” state proclamation.
But when it’s time to send his budget up to the Legislature, he refuses to include a dime for UH athletics. Says we can’t afford it. Even with state General Fund revenue up 35% in the past six years while appropriations to the university have been cut. Even with an $800 million dollar General Fund surplus at the end of fiscal year 2015.
I guess that’s just politics. Or maybe hypocrisy would be a better description. I do know one thing: if our past state leaders were like the Governor, UH would still be playing in Klum Gym.
watched the post on Magill’s and Olevao’s speeches… they were indeed very heartfelt… they will certainly will be missed!

Mongoose, I’m hoping the Gov is showing some tough love for UH in making them re-look their fiscal management. Many commenters have lamented the less than stellar mgmt of UH resources, so perhaps this will help them re-evaluate. If UH makes an effort to improve, then hopefully the state will help in the end. But continually giving bailouts without holding anyone accountable creates an unhealthy habit with no end in sight. Maybe a dollar-matching plan would be feasible…UH saves $x and/or provides $x to athletics, then legislature can match with $x!

I have a feeling for some reason Nebraska wouldn’t agree to a match unless it was @ their place. I don’t recall Nebraska ever being here for a regular season match.
#14, misplaced rant …. The UH budget problem became worse when funding was cut by about 30% in 2010. Because of this, UH needed to find additional funding sources. Before UH received autonomy, the legislature was involved with the UH budgeting process but now it does not have the authority to make those decisions.
In 2014 a state audit was done which found that the university failed to report on some special funds and accounts and for using the funds for things other than their intended functions. Legislators have lost confidence in UH being able to manage its own finances.
That does look like a solid non conference schedule though next year. Let’s hope the teams all have similar success to boost UHs RPI esp with Nikki being a senior, hosting the sub regionals would be nice.
OMG, we are so happy and thankful that you decided to come to UH. And yeah, earning All American Honorable Mention and now 3rd Team AA was not bad too. All the best to you – and TMO.
