All-America: Taylor on 2nd team, Magill on 3rd

Congrats to Nikki Taylor and Olivia Magill.

www.avca.org/awards/all-america/division-one/

Taylor was named to the second team and Magill the third this morning.

I know, it is disappointing. Thought they’d both be higher considering their national stats and the Wahine record.

Taylor, the Big West player of the year, ranked in the top 50 nationally this season in five categories (points average, kill average, ace average, total points and total aces). The Kaiser High product finished the year with team highs of 468 kills — nine shy of 1,000 for her career — 44 aces and 575.5 points.
Magill, one of just two Rainbow Wahine to start all 31 matches, was ranked in the top 20 nationally in blocks and hitting percentage. The transfer from Arizona led the Big West in blocks (153) and hitting percentage (.412), and was second to Taylor in kills (281) and points (366.5).

    I’m not a stats person, and I’m sure Maverick and Orbital will do a more comprehensive breakdown, but at first glance, it sure looks to me that our gals’ stats are more comparable to the players on the AA teams above the ones they landed on… Is this a case of our less-respected conference dragging us down again?
    Just curious…proud of our team and players regardless of the accolades bestowed upon them by others. What a great season! Still in Midwest…cannot get FF tix without spending $100s over face value…not willing…so hate being 4 hrs away and unable to watch in person…

  2. Brandon December 16, 2015 6:22 am

    Taylor is ROBBED. I mean? Tapp and sand booths, even rolfzen over her? The avca messed up on this one

  3. Maverick December 16, 2015 7:20 am

    No stats from me on this one. Just a big congrats to both.

  4. H-Man December 16, 2015 7:26 am

    Congratulations to Nikki and Olivia. Awewome!

  5. Musashi-san December 16, 2015 7:48 am

    Congratulations to Nikki and Olivia!!! I thought that Nikki should have been on the 1st team. But not matter what, they are All-Americans and that’s awesome!!!

    Go Wahine and THANK YOU for an EXCITING SEASON!!! Cannot wait ’till next year.

    if you want to do a comparison, go to above link. underneath the list of teams there is a statistical note on all players.

    Also congrats to TAMU’s Jazzmin Babers, daughter of former Wahine Sue Hemenway and former Warrior Dino Babers, 2nd team

    Shouldn’t be surprised by this
    Non-Power 5 programs represented
    First team 1: BYU
    Second team 1: Hawaii
    third team 4: Hawaii, BYU, Colorado State, Creighton

    Congratulations, Nikki and Olivia! With this being finals week at UHM, I hope that if you are wanting to fly out to join in the festivities, you’ll be able to do so.

    On a related note, even though Cindy wrote a while back about OMG focusing on a heavy spring course load and not going out for beach volleyball it is still sinking in that we (and opponents) won’t be seeing her focused gaze through and above the net.

  9. Cindy Luis December 16, 2015 9:05 am

    Neither will be flying to Omaha for AA banquet. Magill just told me she’s finished with finals. Taylor has 3 finals left, 1 tomorrow and 2 on Friday.

  10. mei mei December 16, 2015 9:09 am

    7 – those are depressing numbers 🙁

    … agree with the other posters… Nikki & Olivia were robbed…
    but alas atleast they were somewhat recognized…

  11. PBnJz December 16, 2015 9:31 am

    Thanks, Cindy…I made my previous post based on looking at the stats at the link provided, otherwise I would have had no idea how they compared! Still think they both should have been one team higher. But yes, both AAs which is awesome and well-deserved!
    So NT could be a 6x AA between Beach & Indoor if performance hold thru next 18 mos! Wow!

  12. uhfan December 16, 2015 10:09 am

    Well Dave is not happy about Nikki being 2nd team. He went off on twitter.

  13. Cindy Luis December 16, 2015 10:17 am

    No he’s not happy. he said a lot more that will be in my story tomorrow.
    @DaveShoji
    Disrespected by the NCAA and now by AVCA! There are not 14 better VB players than our Nikki Taylor. 2nd team AA? A Joke!

  14. Ron December 16, 2015 10:45 am

    Kudos for Dave for sticking up for Nikki in no uncertain terms. I think this will help motivate the team and Nikki to a National Championship next year. I don’t think that there any players better that Nikki when she is healthy. Her laser-like D-set hits are things of beauty unmatched by any other player in the Country.

  15. Ron December 16, 2015 10:46 am

    Looking forward to the story tomorrow.

  16. tom December 16, 2015 12:56 pm

    Nikki and Olivia are All-America and super persons

  17. mauna December 16, 2015 1:20 pm

    The NCAA and AVCA are all for the BIGS, so I’m not at all surprised but at the same time disappointed that they are swayed by the BIGS. If a two players are on the borderline for the 14th spot for 1st team, and if one of those players is in the BIG, it’s a no brainer for them. So sad where the fairness is not apparent anymore. So I’ll take it with a grain of salt, because these unfair decisions will not change.

  18. hollycow December 16, 2015 1:47 pm

    Russ Rose and Hugh McCutcheon are having a good laugh at the second team selection after watching Nikki’s play against their respective teams. Especially Hugh when Nikki killed 11 in the third set. Eleven kills in a set must be some sort of rally scoring record for Hawaii.

  19. uhfan December 16, 2015 3:12 pm

    Dave is gonna be on espn 1420

  20. setaone December 16, 2015 3:35 pm

    Dave doesn’t care….good for him. I’m sure the players love that he goes to bat for them.

  21. warriorfan December 16, 2015 4:53 pm

    I’m still ticked off about Nikki and Olivia. I wonder if UH had lost to TCU if they would have even gotten anything other than honorable mention.

  22. Cindy Luis December 16, 2015 5:13 pm

    21. they probably would have been relegated to HM where the majority of the non-Power Five players landed.

  23. Cindy Luis December 16, 2015 5:21 pm

    19. I didn’t hear Shoji on the Sports Animals. wondering if anyone can fill us in. Kind of surprised that 1420-AM morning show ignored it when it broke on their news cycle, about 20 minutes before the 6 a.m. start.

  24. uhfan December 16, 2015 5:26 pm

    He still hasnt come on yet

  25. Cindy Luis December 16, 2015 5:38 pm

    He is on now. 538.

  26. Big Island VB fan December 16, 2015 5:45 pm

    Question: aren’t first and second team All-Americans required to attend the banquet? I never heard of any spurning the honor. However, I can understand if Nikki is ticked off at being robbed of first team and of course, finals take a higher priority. Then again, if the team had made it to the Final Four, they would have had to take finals on the road. So who takes her place in the award ceremony? Will it be a blank chair? Really curious on this one.

  27. Bleachercoach December 16, 2015 5:49 pm

    Here we go again with these voters!
    OMG and Nikki you are our ALL AMERICANS! Disappointed with the voters for both girls, but we still need be GRATEFUL! This season was one of the most rewarding seasons in a long time. You both made a statement against Texas AM, Penn St, and even closing the gap against Minnesota. Next year will be even greater due to the confidence gained. We have no control of the snobbing, but just bring it next year wreckless abandon! Anyways, I am sure you both know who the Glory goes to anyways! Love you OMG and Nikki. Congratulations to a job well done…

  28. Cindy Luis December 16, 2015 5:50 pm

    26. no they aren’t required to attend. and it has nothing to do with her not making first team. She’s not spurning it. It’s a luncheon. there is no empty chair. People buy tickets to attend. Honored players get comped.

  29. Cindy Luis December 16, 2015 5:58 pm

    Shoji recapped the last weekend, saying he wished they (all teams) could have a day in between like men’s basketball instead of playing back to back. but that volleyball is there yet. Spoke a little on Greeley’s injury and that Taylor banged her knee in Set 1 and it started affecting her late in the match.
    did mention again bout the lack of respect, that he was shocked that Taylor didn’t make first team. Said the committee might have dismissed her numbers since they played in the Big West but pointed out how good her numbers were out of conference against teams that were in the tournament such as Florida, UCLA and Wichita State, as well as what she did against TCU, A&M, Penn State and Minnesota.

  30. Ki December 16, 2015 6:33 pm

    Maybe it’s a good thing Nikki got snubbed. Not only will this fuel Nikki’s drive next season, but maybe it will entice Dave to stay another season (or two) to prove AVCA/NCAA wrong.

  31. Sickman Fraud December 16, 2015 7:09 pm

    Glad for both Magill and Taylor, they both deserve recognition. Not really upset because the bs is the fabric of collegiate sports.
    What I like Coach Shoji to focus on is the inclusion of a freshman setter on the first team, the Minnesota setter that was a big reason NaWahine lost. The hope is that the coaching staff will give Iosia a fair shot at starting.

  32. greenthumb December 16, 2015 7:43 pm

    9 etc. thank you!
    13 thanks for pointing out his tweet … thank goodness there was a meme for that : D twitter can be fun

  33. hollycow December 16, 2015 7:53 pm

    Not that it matters but, VT poll on their choices for 1st team AA. Three way tie for the lead between Santana, Brisco and Carlini. Nikki’s 4th and Alhassan 5th.

  34. T103 December 16, 2015 8:39 pm

    Read in the paper that Shoji’s contract is being made official, or I guess working out the kinks as we should put it? And that it mentioned that it was agreed upon before the season even started? I think, and this is jut my guess, he knew he was coming back and with all the hopeful recruits coming in, future looks bright! So here’s to the UH AD making it all good and official. Cheee!

  35. Cubicle1126 December 16, 2015 10:27 pm

    congrats to nikki taylor and olivia magill!

    bummed that taylor didn’t get on the 1st team, but a great honor nonetheless! and it gives her some added motivation for next year.

    glad that magill made one of the lists. perhaps hawaii’s elite 8 appearance bumped her up from the HM list. wish hawaii could’ve had her for more than just 2 years.

  36. z December 16, 2015 10:46 pm

    Nikki and Olivia have nothing to prove. We know how good they are. I pay little attention to these awards.

  37. OrbitalRipZ December 17, 2015 3:18 am

    Like almost everyone else on this blog, I was surprised that Nikki Taylor didn’t earn AA 1st Team accolades. Our national POY candidate engaged Minnesota’s Daly Santana (probable National POY) mano-a-mano in Set 4 of the Quarterfinals, and if Taylor had the backup in that set the way Santana did, the UH would have, should have, could have gone on to Set 5.

    POWER FIVE RESULTS:

    BIG TEN (14 conference teams) = 16 AAs on 1st, 2nd, 3rd teams
    1st team = 6
    2nd team = 7
    3rd team = 3
    HM = 9
    (16 AAs is a new record for the Big Ten.)

    BIG 12 (9 teams) = 8 AAs
    1st = 4
    2nd = 2
    3rd = 2
    HM = 3
    (Texas led the nation with the most honorees for a single team with 5 overall. Big 12 is the only conference with 2 teams with multiple 1st team members: Texas and Kansas — Havili and Payne, neither a national POY candidate — had 2 each.)

    PAC-12 (12 teams) = 8 AAs
    1st = 2
    2nd = 3
    3rd = 3
    HM = 3
    Will they name Samy Bricio of Southern California a Co-POY?

    SEC (13 teams) = 3 AAs
    1st = 1
    2nd = 1
    3rd = 1
    HM = 11

    ACC (15 teams) = 1 AA
    1st = 0
    2nd = 0
    3rd = 1
    HM = 11 … 11? Really?

    NON-POWER FIVE RESULTS:

    WEST COAST (10 teams) = 2 AAs on 1st, 2nd, 3rd teams
    1st = 1
    2nd = 0
    3rd = 1
    HM = 4

    MISSOURI VALLEY (10 teams) = 0 AA
    1st = 0
    2nd = 0
    3rd = 0
    HM = 5 (ties the MVC’s league-high record of 5 overall honorees)

    BIG EAST (10 teams) = 1 AA
    1st = 0
    2nd = 0
    3rd = 1
    HM = 2

    BIG WEST (9 teams) = 2 AA
    1st = 0
    2nd = 1
    3rd = 1
    HM = 0 (Did think Long Beach State’s Jenelle Hudson would get HM. Not to be.)

  38. Cindy Luis December 17, 2015 8:53 am

    34. Technically he had been working without a signed contract, the last which expired last Feb. 28.

    New extension is for six years. current salary is about $180,000 before bonuses. John Cook at Nebraska makes $400,000. Jerritt Elliott at Texas about $354,000. Even Sealy at UCLA makes more at $196,000.

    Shoji said that the new contract will include an opt-out clause.

    My feeling has long been he’ll stay through 2016, at the end of which he will be 70.
    But this is the first time when we’ve spoken that I’ve heard him so tired. Part of it IMHO is all the issues with the NCAA and AVCA because no matter what Hawaii does, it will never be good enough.

    I remember that when Hawaii went to the final four in 2009 and he was national coach of the year, the program mentioned all the milestones reach by coaches for wins, 100, 200, 300 etc. Shoji was not on the list and he had reach 1,000.

    Shoji has been a caretaker of the game for decades before the rest of the college world got on board. Hawaii has cared about volleyball before many of these colleges even sponsored the sport.

  39. Cindy Luis December 17, 2015 8:59 am

    36. perhaps you don’t care about the awards but the program does. Years from now, people will only look at lists and see who made it. Normal folks won’t know about the disrespect just that Taylor got 2nd team. IMHO it was a slap in the face to what the Wahine had accomplished this season.

    new thread up for Thursday with NCAA semifinals.
