Hair apparent; meet Rolo

Football recruits who sign up with the Warriors are eligible for:

> An all-expense trip to Sydney … and Ann Arbor, Tucson, San Jose, Fresno, Colorado Springs and San Diego.

> A free education in paradise.

> And any hair length or style.

Yep, the Warriors are going back to the days of Troy — Polamalu, that is — and lifting the restrictions on hair lengths. It’s part of the dual purpose of teaching young people to be responsible but still allowing them to be young people.

That sounds like déjà Vu all over again! Glad the hair is back!

Hey ST, any word on what color the home uniforms will be and what they’ll look like? Will Hawaii 5-0 be kept as the team runs on the field? Is Rolo gonna drop the ‘Rainbow’ and just go with ‘Warrior’?

This is beginning to feel like Polynesia’s Team again!

Be awesome if rolo could change the rb from Mililanis mind and come to Hawaii. That way, the crowd could sing using this songs rhythm:
    Bye bye miss American pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
    Etc etc…
Now use same rhythm n sing:
    Vae vae malepeai
Crossed the pylon to the end zone cuz the end zone was dry
Now them good ol boys r raising him high
Singing this will b the day that we fly

I wish I had the Kala to attend the Na Koa fundraiser…not many do nowadays. I wish Na Koa would do a fundraiser (like the politicians) and have a “stew & rice” fundraiser for $25 each. I’m sure you’d get a massive audience and it would revive support in the program. And yes, along with Al, I think that they should start “season tickets” now (e.g. season ticket renewals) while the interest is high…

  14. Arcumfortis December 12, 2015 9:47 am

Never understood the wisdom of Chows hair policy. But I guess the desire for a conservative look matched the desire for a conservative approach to football. The rest is history, etched losing in the dullest and most unimaginative ways possible. So go for it Rolo, let these young men strut their youth and display their creative individually both on their heads and on the field.

  15. Legistlature December 12, 2015 9:48 am

Kyron maybe if Rolo let’s him know. that God Rock instead of Pride Rock, we might be able to lure him into the tribe of this GREAT TEAM called THE FAMILY OF WARRIORS

  16. bowwar December 12, 2015 9:48 am

The ARMY-NAVY pre-show disclosed that Kenny Niumatalolo will be interviewed for the BYU job on Monday…It will be interesting to see if religion (he’s Mormon) and $$$ will convince him to take the job. I could be a reason why Jasper didn’t apply for the UH job, as I would assume he would be “next” for Navy.

I have a hard time believing that BYU would adapt to the run-based offense employed by Niumatalolo…

  17. bowwar December 12, 2015 9:53 am

We need bulk, so a focus should be made on getting OL and DL…We also need some speed at WR and another good running back to add to our stable of RBs. Speed kills, so hopefully we’ll get some…

The JC QB here for a visit looks good, so hopefully, he’ll consider UH. I think we should recruit another good freshman QB to build the stable.

I’m a 35 year plus season-ticket owner and defacto Na Koa member, but could never afford to attend a $500/person fundraiser…Bring it back to the people and put on an event that is simple (stew & rice) and where everyone can afford to attend.

  21. Ipu Man December 12, 2015 11:03 am

Rolo surely will suit UH in black and green again.
Now paint the field black, too 🙂

I just emailed Joyce at Na Koa to ask if they would consider a $50.00 Stew and Rice night with Rolo. I said the crowd might be so big, they may have to hold it at Murakami Stadium. I asked her to pass it on to the president of Na Koa. I hope it happens.

$50 Stew and rice….which means we would have to draw 10 times more people than the current fundraiser. I’m all for trying something different especially for people who don’t have all that money but want to participate. I wonder if we have that many motivated fans as some people cannot be bothered although they are fans of sort.

  29. Legistlature December 12, 2015 12:22 pm

There will be a sushi bar, heavy pupus, and hosted beer/wine.
Hopefully some volunteer police officers around just in case…
“Volunteer” so UH no need to pay these guys overtime pay

  30. Old School Dave December 12, 2015 12:22 pm

You’d be surprised at the number of local folks who are willing to dish out $500. An analogy could be drawn with the number of families that will spend $20,000/year to send their kids to a private school, here.

I think that the AD needs to revamp their fund raising and go after local corporations and especially attract and bring in wealthy residents who are living here. Nothing wrong, nor I’m I criticizing a $50 stew and rice rally, just that they need a different approach and focus. Depending on the suits down at the State Capital looks to be fruitless. Many of them would be fine with UH going the way of Long Beach State, CS Fullerton, and Pacific, all schools that dropped football.

A $50 stew and rice night in addition to the $500 night would raise more funds, cause frankly the people who attend these fundraisers $500 can afford to and I’m grateful that there are people who can help the program, but in the same token let’s not alienate the average citizen who wants to support the team to the best of their ability or what their pocketbook allow for that matter…

Where would sports in Hawaii be without our great legislature?

  51. Buffoman December 12, 2015 6:03 pm

#47 not that anyone (NCAA) would look at the situation UH is in and say, “that’s very unfair to that school. ” And then do something about it. But that’s not the reality of collegiate sports today. It’s all about the dollars and who can get it off so.some else’s back. Too bad, it’s us and there’s really no other way, unless the collective sees that a leveling could be a more fair approach.

  52. Anon Y. Mous December 12, 2015 6:10 pm

Is there any way to give input on the uniforms? I don’t mind the throwback uniforms but the regular uniforms have been getting progressively weird/ugly for the past few years. It’s like whomever designed them has no fashion sense whatsoever. I no longer want to see the contrasting shoulders or weird stripes down the back of the pants. Also grey should never be part of the color scheme, it should be green, black, and white.

The current uniforms are a painful reminder of the last four seasons.

  53. Legistlature December 12, 2015 6:15 pm

    *NEW RECRUITING PITCH*
Maybe UH can increase the football players complimentary game tickets from 4 and double it to 8. Imagine that coupled with the mainland players giving their tickets to a local player if their family can’t make it here to a game. The local player can now bring his whole OHANA including his favorite uncle and auntie

  54. Legistlature December 12, 2015 6:18 pm

me thinks if the University is to GIVE GIVE GIVE….it may reap the rewards down that road..

  55. Anon Y. Mous December 12, 2015 6:30 pm

    Re#44
You are right about the subsidies but I think there is more to that. I think the MWC might expect us to move all of our other sports from the BWC to the MWC or risk losing membership entirely. Plus it doesn’t help that our football team has been terrible lately, that doesn’t carry much cachet when it comes to nationally televised games. Remember when the MWC schools left the WAC they had no problem kicking UH to the curb when the football team was terrible under ‘Thou That Shalt Not Be Named.’

I think, therefore, that it is critically important for Rolo to establish a sustainably winning program.

I’m sure your contribution is appreciated by UH, but that’s not my point.

Our $50.00 donation, although coming from the heart, may or may not make a difference in the big picture. The athletic departments deficits are more than a few fundraising events could balance.

I was speaking more to the joy we would have as fans by being a part of something bigger than ourselves and having the opportunity to hear Rolo and his vision for Hawaii Football.

  71. Maddog50 December 13, 2015 5:29 am

According to today’s paper the Governor was a season ticket holder for 30 years but has been priced out of the market and no longer has them. This coming from someone who makes 150k a year a spouse who is an administrator in public schools and had a 34 year career as an engineer and project manager while serving in a paid political position. Household expenses must be thru the roof!!!!!

  72. Old School Dave December 13, 2015 6:54 am

The article about the Gov telling UH to sort out its financial problems only reinforces the attitude that has prevailed in the “Square Building” for a while. This only highlights the need to revamp the fundraising efforts of the Athletic Department and seek out wealthy donors in Hawaii such as the Business School has in Mr Shiddler. You can’t depend on the State to support the only university here. They are more interested in wasting millions on computer programs that don’t work or health care programs that go broke. If UH Athletics continues to go downtown with their palms out and rely on the State, they will go the way of Long Beach State, Pacific, and Cal State Fullerton where football is only a memory.

  76. Legistlature December 13, 2015 7:19 am

Can the person or persons in charge shift the monies distribution around without jeopardising his or her job

  77. wow December 13, 2015 9:00 am

lol, Ignorance, Ignorance, Ignorance … the state is funding the University, what do you think the 428 million is for. What the people in the square building are asking for is fiscal responsibility from the University. That is what autonomy the university wanted is all about.

  78. Old School Dave December 13, 2015 10:07 am

Well, bottom-line is that UH Athletics needs to deal with travel subsidies, COA Stipends, upgrading facilities, improving coaches salaries, etc. They have to look for other sources of financial aid and donors. Hate to harp on Lahainaluna High’s example, but if they can have a part-time resident give a generous $7 million to fund their new field and stadium, maybe UH Athletics could do the same?

  79. el burro sabio December 13, 2015 10:13 am

OSD, if UH athletics could pull in big donors they would have done it already. Everyone wants to find their Phil Knight or Boone Pickens. My personal hope is still Garret the Genius, c’mon, make your billions.

  80. NorthShoreFan December 13, 2015 10:16 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.
Yup, UH asked to manage their own fiscal $’s and they set spending priorities. Not sure I like the gov’s q about what is more important though. Me thinks both is important and the question is whether he and the politicos want to help the athletics/school program. If the answer is no the just say so. Trying to make the UH look bad is not necessary. If he wants to do the budget for them then he will own it. They can prioritize the needs for the school. IMHO

In the mean while,….. IMUA WARRIORS!

  81. Old School Dave December 13, 2015 10:29 am

Albertson’s paid money to be put on Boise State’s Stadium. Maybe Foodland can do the same for UH? Maybe, not as Aloha Stadium is owned/runned by the State and not UH. Gotta keep looking for a way, I guess. The Ching Family/Foundation has been most generous.

  82. Old School Dave December 13, 2015 10:30 am

Any sighting of prospective recruits on-campus this weekend?

  83. kapakahi December 13, 2015 10:39 am

    #71,

The fact that the Gov chose not to renew his football season tickets demonstrates that…….supporting UH Athletics……is not among his higher personal…..and apparently political……priorities……but now goes to UH sporting events…….’cuz it’s among his free perks as Gov.
