Just reposting some stats I compiled and posted in the previous thread that show how well UH played against Penn State (better than any other PSU opponent):

    1. UH hit .389 for the match. The next highest that a PSU opponent hit was Iowa at .283 (Iowa still lost).
    2. UH hit .161 pts. higher than PSU. Next highest was Nebraska, .115 pts. higher last month in its 3-0 win over the Lions.
    3. No other PSU opponent had five players hit .250+ for the match (min. 10 attempts) and three players hit .300+ (min 10 att.).
    4. For a 3-set match, UH had only 10 hitting errors, the lowest of any PSU opponent, and its 3.33 errors/set is the lowest in all PSU’s matches. In a 3 set match, Minnesota and Nebraska managed only 14 errors each earlier in the season against PSU.
    5. PSU had 3 team blocks and 1 blk/set, PSU lows for a 3-set match (for the first stat) and for any match (for second stat).
    6. UH had 13 more assists than PSU, or 4.33/set more. NW had 13 more assists in its win over PSU, but that was a 5-set match. No other opponent had such an assist advantage.
    7. For only the fourth time this year, PSU was out-blocked by an opponent. The others were Minnesota (twice) and Nebraska.
    8. Finally, and most impressively, UH had a season-high 73% side-out percentage for a PSU opponent; next highest was the Nebraska win at 66% (side-out stats not available for all PSU matches).

  2. DaBeautifulGame December 11, 2015 9:04 pm

Hope ESPN3 will have the replay available.

  3. Maverick December 11, 2015 9:09 pm

Cindy, thanks for your acknowledgement on previous thread. By the way, you are correct that of the 8 teams left, only UH has played power-5 opponents in every round. However, of the teams in the sweet 16, both UH and Wisconsin had played/been scheduled to play three power-5 opponents. But Wisconsin fell to Florida 3-2 tonite. So even better for UH, it is the only elite 8 team to have “defeated” three power-5 opponents so far.

  4. Maverick December 11, 2015 9:10 pm

    3. Replay is available and I have already watched the full match.

  5. warriorfan December 11, 2015 9:18 pm

I hope the wahine play Loose, have fun, keep serving tough and digging rockets and feeding the middles and hot players, and keep Dave’s undefeated record against the Golden Gophers intact.

The last two teams to beat Penn State in the tournament have gone on to the title game, so lets do the same wahine!!

  6. DaBeautifulGame December 11, 2015 9:22 pm

Match doesn’t show up for me as being available for some reason. I only see 3 matches up and none are UH v. PSU. I’m using WatchESPN app. on my tablet…strange.

  7. Malachy Grange December 11, 2015 9:22 pm

Tai was HUGE….. we wouldn’t have won without her….. or without Nikki, OMG, Kalae, Taylor, Savannah et al……… great victory for a team excelling in every aspect of the game….. they look very confident and they took the wind out of PSU’s sails. PSU seemed to self-destruct in the 3rd set.

  8. Brandon December 11, 2015 9:22 pm

    6. Well, besides ucla, Oregon was playing to get to the title game. So I guess you’re right lol.

  9. DaBeautifulGame December 11, 2015 9:23 pm

Thank you tongo from prevous thread for youtube link.

  10. Willie December 11, 2015 9:33 pm

Just noting the obvious, Wahine the only NCAA unseeded team in the Elite Eight tomorrow. Everyone here knows they got it wrong with the NCAA’s snub, but the team worked it out on their own. Wishing them the best as they continue their quest towards the National Championship and proving the NCAA wrong.

  11. Bleachercoach December 11, 2015 9:37 pm

Haha to the NCAA Committee…So in the Elite 8 there are #1 ,#2,#3,#4,#5,#9, and #unseeded (us)
Sometimes those computer things not so good. Pay back for a little respect feels sweet!

  12. Maverick December 11, 2015 9:37 pm

    7. Once you choose volleyball as your sport, hit the replay button on the far right top corner and the match link will appear.

  13. Maverick December 11, 2015 9:47 pm

    12. Also #11 Florida who I think you accidentally missed.

  14. DaBeautifulGame December 11, 2015 9:50 pm

    13. Have tried that several times as well. Also tried going to Channels, chose ESPN3, then Replay. Same 3 matches available (ILL/MN, FLA/WI, NEB/UT) but no UH/PSU. Even tried rebooting puter and app…giving up now lol. Gonna watch it on youtube. But much mahalo anyway for the mana’o and suggestions. I gotta see that beautiful game again! Peace

  15. kalihifc December 11, 2015 9:52 pm

If I’m reading the bracket correctly, if Na Wahine get to the Final Four, the opponent would be Texas or Florida, which they have beaten within the last calendar year.

  16. HawaiiMongoose December 11, 2015 9:52 pm

Seven power conference teams in the Elite Eight, and UH. It makes me appreciate more than ever how special the Wahine volleyball program is.

  17. Maverick December 11, 2015 9:59 pm

    15. Dunno what to tell y’all. It is working for me right now. Sorry. Good luck with YouTube.

  18. lina December 11, 2015 10:36 pm

No looking ahead past Minnesota. Me thinks they’re going to be really really tough to handle tomorrow! Their outside hitters are pretty scary!

  19. Maverick December 11, 2015 10:55 pm

    19. Our middles and outsides are pretty scary too!

  20. jmy December 11, 2015 11:00 pm

Reading the post-match quotes…What does Russ Rose mean by, “They’re very good, but I would hate to make it like we lost because they were better.”? Hawaii WAS better…MUCH better!

  21. OrbitalRipZ December 11, 2015 11:24 pm

Like I said about the Texas A&M match results, no one — NO ONE — saw the UH brooms coming out for a 2nd match in a row against a Power Five seed. And against the bullies of DI women’s volleyball at that.

Don’t know what to expect against Minnesota — Golden Gopher’s MB Hannah Tapp was chosen as a National POW. Yes the Quarterfinals [Elite Eight] feels like going from the frying pan into the fire.

But I do know what to expect of the Women of Manoa. This squad, the 2015 version of Team Shoji, has timed its peaking to perfection, and has become one of the most underrated teams ever in Na Wahine program history.

If TMO (who’s a streak hitter) stays hot and if OMG grips and rips like only she can and if Nikki Taylor plays like the National POY candidate that she is, Na Wahine cannot be denied the status of contender — not pretender — to the Crown.

    GO BOWS!

  22. Ashley December 11, 2015 11:44 pm

was going through the Penn State/Hawaii thread on Volleytalk, and sheesh people there are downright annoying and disrespectful. i think it’s better here than over there because i cannot tolerate the hateful things being said half the time. anyways, good game and great win for the Hawaii Program, now let’s take care of Minnesota, because once again we got Hawaii haters calling for Hawaii to lose. not gonna say Minnesota isn’t good, but i find it so disrespectful that posters (NOT HERE) can immediately ignore what Hawaii has accomplished in this tournament alone and say they’ll lose because of who they are facing. Tonight against Penn State, i was worried we would see our season end, but Hawaii has the heart and leadership, and they are out to make a point so i was glad they were able to stun the defending national champions. goodnight & can’t wait for this game. gonna rush to finish work tomorrow so i can see this game

  24. menehune December 12, 2015 6:02 am

My daughter, who was at the game with family and friends, had these comments re: the match:

The team is AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME.

The fans went “bananas” as the band was playing Hawai’i 5-0.

It felt like a home game for the Wahine as the vast majority of fans were cheering for Hawai’i.

Loved it that so many “locals” were on the team.

You could “feel the electricity” coming from the players.

And yes, we’ll be at the game again today.

    LET’S GO ‘BOWS.

  25. Cindy Luis December 12, 2015 6:12 am

    Thanks for all the links.
in the middle of laundry so will be in and out.

As for what Rose said, he said a lot of great things about Hawaii. Kept saying how terrific UH played, and that UH was the better team.
believe that quote you are mentioning he was saying that he’d hate to make it all about UH being the better team. He was pretty down on how his team played, especially in the third set. think he meant that while UH was the better team, his team playing poorly had something to do with the outcome.

    23. very glad to hear that we’re more civil over here.

  26. Cindy Luis December 12, 2015 6:13 am

    25. your daughter and I keep missing each other Hopefully I’ll meet her today.

  27. 2left December 12, 2015 6:21 am

#25 – about the locals on the team – that what gave me a really nice vibe about this year’s team from early on and got me following them so closely. They remind me of a Super-Sized version of a Wahine team from the 80s – bunch of tough local chics. After I watch them I check my pockets to make sure I still got my lunch money. 🙂

  28. dopaco24 December 12, 2015 6:22 am

Hawaii only started to go unseeded when the NCAA started automatically giving 1st and 2nd round host sites to seeded teams(ones that submitted bids). Before that, the last time UH was unseeded was in the mid 90s.

  29. Wen December 12, 2015 6:29 am

One thing Hawai’i hasn’t had in previous runs through the NCAA tournament is height. I always wondered how well the team would do if they were as tall as any of the other teams the further into the competition they went.

    Now we know.

  30. H-Man December 12, 2015 6:56 am

    Yeeaaahhhhh!!! Wahine going Gopher hunting!

  31. Not an Expert December 12, 2015 7:24 am

Wen, the Wahine had height. Over the last 14 years they had about 4-6 players who were taller than 6’2″. These taller players were not all starters thus the Wahine team was considered short.

  32. greenthumb December 12, 2015 8:02 am

PB and menehune, thanks for the courtside descriptions from the fan seats. I hope the non-Minnesota fans stick with being our newest fans to make the arena LOUD again today. Hawaii does things in style, I’m very surprised that the farthest-away school was the only one with its band and cheerleaders. Thanks to the people who got that together, what a great surprise.

Cindy (26) thanks for making this a good place to be. I’ve learned so much from you and the longtimers (much more to learn always though).

  35. Doug December 12, 2015 8:58 am

I alway been a supporter of Kendra to play more. But Taylor was awesome last night. She was like Mariota running the read option. Penn State had a really hard time reading the sets.

  36. A View From Afar December 12, 2015 9:06 am

Congrats to Na Wahine for overcoming the PSU challenge!
Now once more into the breach.
Now is the time to claim your reward for those endless hours in the gym, the weight room, the film study, the team meetings, the exhausting travel.
Once again you’ll need to summon your focus, energy, and smarts to face the MN challenge.
Other challenges may await after MN, but all that matters now is the immediate challenge of MN.
Hope the UH fans onsite will be loud and proud to help you in this quest.
Above all, be in the moment.
Play with your hearts and your head.
Play for yourselves and for your teammates.
Us fans are just along for the ride, so do this for yourselves.
    Go Wahine!

  37. Steve December 12, 2015 9:46 am

    37. That was beautiful! Mahalo!

I just called Giovanni Pastrami on Lewers Street in Waikiki. They will be showing the game at 1:30. I’ll be there!

I am obviously hoping and cheering for a Final Four appearance, but this team has already proved themselves. Elite 8 status and knocking off Penn State is an amazing year regardless of what happens today. GO ‘BOWS!

  38. frings December 12, 2015 9:56 am

#35. Rank amateurism. It’s not like Wahine is some obscure Hawaiian word. And I’m sure it’s in the media guide. Wonder what they’d do in Happy Valley if the SA misspelled Nittany? Nitt witts.

  39. darkfire December 12, 2015 10:13 am

    39. ROTFLOL!!! Nitt witts…good one. I am in awe of the Bows. Just when you thought they couldn’t get any better, they do. When was the last time the word flawless was mentioned by the opposing coach when describing our team? (TAMU) I am so proud of the girls I wish I was there too to lend support and yell till I’m hoarse.

Thanks to all especially Mav & Cindy for the incredible stats and analysis and links to media. This is one knowledgeable and mostly amicable blog that I truly appreciate and soak in like a sponge.

One step at a time, Bows. PLAY HARD, PLAY SMART, GO BOWS!!!!

  40. cocobean December 12, 2015 10:18 am

Win or lose today I’m so proud of the girls. When they opened the season they looked anything but elite. The improvements they’ve made from the Idaho game game till is quite remarkable. The players have settled into their roles and are playing with a belief in themselves and their team mates.

Kudos to Dave and staff for staying the course, for not letting outside noise affect personnel decisions. They coached up players not tore them down. They showed confidence in players who needed it the most. It’s paying dividends now. Every remaining team has a high level of talent. Matches will be decided not by who has the most talent but which team displays the most mental toughness.

  41. greenthumb December 12, 2015 10:37 am

uhfan (1) and Al (35) thanks for the links to the coverage. I hope that photo of TMO goes viral! Props to Michael Zamora for excellent photos and for spelling our players’ names correctly. Busy with the pickled lemon to get my voice back for 3 hours from now.

  42. Ki December 12, 2015 10:41 am

I don’t care what people say, the fact that the NCAA DID NOT seed the Wahine is a blessing in disguise. If we were seeded (and hosted a sub-regional) we probably would have been sent to USC’s regional or Washington’s regional who in recent years has had our number in the post season. We are one match away from making the Final Four as an UNSEEDED team. I really like our chances. With lady luck on our side, we are 3 wins away from the National Title. Let’s Go Bows!!!!

  43. Aloha73g December 12, 2015 10:43 am

Yesterday was my Birthday… what a wonderful unexpected gift from the Wahine!! I was so stoked and excited.

I remember watching the spring match vs Texas. The 1st set was a little rough, but then from the 2nd set on … Savanah was digging everything, Maglio was blocking & hitting like a champ and Tai was passing and hitting well. I remember turning to my friends somewhere in the 3rd/4th set and saying, we’re going to be GOOD this year!”

Needless to say, the Wahine proved me right! They have already exceeded the lofty expectations I had for them, and I don’t think they’re done yet. If they continue the high level of play from the past two matches I think we can beat anyone!

    -Aloha!

  44. ionw December 12, 2015 10:46 am

still digesting na wahine sweeping the 2 time defending national champion and biggest bullies of womens volleyball penn st. wahine puts nittany lions on chain and whip. shoji was happy as jubilant and he saw that last ball untouched going out hit the deck right in front of him.

now to whack some gophers. wahine should remain undefeated against them.

    GO BOWS!

  45. ionw December 12, 2015 10:51 am

    39. LOL! Nitt witts. that is funny!

Wahine eliminates two-time defending champion Penn State

    http://www.ncaa.com/game/volleyball-women/d1/2015/12/11/hawaii-penn-st

Wahine the only unseeded now and an Elite Eight as well as an Elite team, time to crush Minnesota!

  46. Cubicle1126 December 12, 2015 10:55 am

so proud of this wahine team. it was so thrilling and satisfying and a great surprise to see them sweep penn st. i thought for sure hawaii had a chance … but a sweep!? wow!

looking forward to the match against minnesota, for a trip to the final four! no matter what happens, this has been a great ride … here’s hoping the wahine fight to play another week!

    go bows!

  47. tongo December 12, 2015 11:00 am

#41 Agree totally! Wahines have exceeded my expectations. They are champions in so many ways.

With so many talented and physical teams left, it continues to be a war of attrition – who will grind it out point for point until the opponent falters. This wahine team has those abilities. To me, the keys are Taylor and Tai. Taylor needs to continue setting so smartly. Tai needs to stay relax and loose as she did last night so she can allow the brain to help sense the block before hitting. Go bows – play smart!

  48. leron December 12, 2015 11:23 am

This team has a lot of mental fortitude. It’s been over a month since they played a match at home. Seems like a long time ago.

  49. OrbitalRipZ December 12, 2015 12:17 pm

For those who don’t follow women’s volleyball and think Minnesota will be a pushover because it’s not in the floodlights like Penn State, Washington, USC, better think again.

Minnesota’s 3rd year HC is Hugh McCutcheon — a former New Zealander who graduated from BYU. Anyone familiar with professional volleyball knows his name. He coached the U.S. Men’s Olympic Volleyball Team to a gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, then accepted the HC position of the U.S. Women’s National Team for the 2009-2012 Olympic quadrennial.

Big Ten POY and National POY candidate is Puerto Rico-native Daly Santana, who leads the conference in kills per set (4.37) while ranking 5th in service aces per set (0.35) during Big Ten play.

Already mentioned MB Hannah Tapp, who was chosen as a National POW. Minnesota also features the Big Ten FOY — Samantha Seliger-Swenson.

Volleyball is a game of MOMENTUM shifts, and if these sometimes seismic sometimes just barely felt tremors can move in the direction of the Bows …

Like I said above, playing Minnesota after Penn State feels like going from the frying pay into the fire.

    GO BOWS!

  50. menehune December 12, 2015 12:26 pm

    49. leron. They’ve played their last nine matches on the road…..true Road Warriors.

  51. tako December 12, 2015 12:31 pm

Looking for the Wahine to sweep, it’ll be sweet….
    Banzai, Banzai, Banzai… = Go Bows…
