Downright balmy 35 when landing, up to 44.
Team got in yesterday, oddly routed through atlanta.
They are at study hall then lunch. They have practice later this afternoon at Drake.
The really random thing was pulling over to check directions to hotel and having a guy tap on the window. It was Shoji out for jog.
Will be back later. Will try to shoot stuff from practice.

Hope Mitchem is taking care of her school.
I know what happens this week in Iowa is our #1 concern. That being said, what happens with Annie is crucial for next year. Dave gave her a free trip to see her parents even though he knew she was not ready to help the team yet. She is now back in Hawaii taking care of school and rehabilitating. She will be a 6 position player next year which will really help with substitution patterns. We will have 5 really good defensive specialist we can call on. Annie could be the key to a dynasty in the making. O.K. That might be too dramatic! Go Bows!

#3 Yeah, my thoughts completely. Mitchem is so multi-skilled and physically gifted that she can be either the starting MH or OH – or both. Annie will play a very important role next year if the team is to succeed. Hopefully, all is going well with her school work and other necessary requirements. At the end of day, Annie needs to understand and have the maturity to make school work her highest priority – and then volleyball. Wishing her the best.
Count me in Camp Tai. You can’t teach or build heart. It has to come from within. Does that mean she never gets subbed for? Nope. Shoji did so in the sub-regional and that helped her see the whole game and come back in with more overall scope.
I am guessing most of us are long enough past age 21-22 that it is hard remember what it was like at that age to have responsibility and feel like you must live up to it and do not allow yourself to say “I’m only human, I will do my best and push myself but I am not perfect and I cannot bear the burden alone.”
I don’t know her or any of the other players and yet it is so obvious to me that they look to her as a rock and a centering force. It’s all there in the body language. Something to think back on is TMO’s comment earlier this year that NT had said she (TMO) is stronger/has more abilities than she is aware of. As well as her repeated statements of gratitude to be playing for UH.
Maybe I missed it in a previous string but will the wahine game against penn going to be shown on TV?
#6 Agree, playing Tai is a moot point as she is the starter and essential part of team chemistry. My only comment about her play is that Tai is trying to play almost too perfectly and playing more aggressive than she needs to be, which most often leads to unnecessary mistakes and resulting unearned points to the opponent. IMO, Tai needs to play relax so that the mind can come into play to help make the right shots – just like Kalei. Tai plays best when she is smiling.
PSU has lost 5 matches this year and much of those losses have been attributed to ball control. We have real chance to win but it requires steady high level play, understanding it is going to be a point for point slug fest for long periods, and playing to win the war of attrition. To me, this match will come down to a game of attrition – which team wears the other team down. If wahines can keep play at a high level and continue on-going serving pressure, PSU’s ball control errors will likely appear soon or later degrading their offense and causing them to falter.
Cindy, would you happen to know why the Hawaiiathletic.com’ web site does not (has not yet) list a GameTracker option for this Friday’s match? I can pick up the GameTracker option at the official Penn State Women’s Volleyball web site, so it’s not a problem. I just find it unusual that UH Athletics does not (yet) list this option. Perhaps, they will add it prior to the start of the match.

How cool that the Wahine team is practicing at Drake. My son-in-law is a Phd Professor at Drake University and has taught there since 1995. He and my daughter are both El Camino HS graduates in Oceanside and their home in Des Moines is only three blocks from DrakeU.
They’ll be at the game against PSU with their two sons and their UH sweatshirts and hats. They are both athletes, my son in law played football, baseball and wrestled; my daughter was an All Conference setter and was on the track team as a sprinter and long jumper.
Maybe they can seek out Cindy and tell them that “menehune” is their Dad on Volley Shots.

Question regarding expenses picked up by the NCAA…..
Since Hawaii is in the unique situation where they couldn’t go home and then back out for regionals, is the NCAA picking up ALL costs associated with them staying on the mainland for the entire week? I hope so.
I’m sure that LMU was able to go home, stay in their own beds for at least a few days and then head to San Diego.
I do recall that the NCAA will only pay up to the night/morning after a team loses. So if a team loses on Friday and wants to stay through the regional finals, that second day is paid for by the school.

nothing new for some teams to get to stay home, sleep in own beds. SC and LMU both when heading to USD. Texas home for subregional and region. UW last year as well.

One season removed from a 24-win season and appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 13 years, the University of Hawaiāi menās volleyball team was picked No. 7 in the preseason 2016 AVCA Top 15 Coaches Poll.
BYU was voted No. 1 followed by UC Irvine, Loyola-Chicago, Long Beach State, UCLA, Ohio State, UH, Lewis, UC Santa Barbara, and Penn State. Rounding out the Top 15 were Pepperdine, Southern California, Stanford, and Ball State and George Mason (t-15th).

#13 tongo. Yes, Oceanside (also home to Wahine Castillo) is a really great place to live and raise a family. In one day, you can go surfing, skiing, play tourist in Mexico and we’re only two hours from L. A. and five from Vegas, where we’ll go next month to celebrate our 59th wedding anniversary.
#18 WaWa. No problem. Born and raised in Ypahu, joined USMC right out of high school in 1955, retired after 26+ years & 17 from USPS. Yes, I’m a triple dipper and really enjoying our golden years and are also fervent fans of Wahine vball. I’m also a Klummer, played in Klum Gym while on the USMC vball team in a tournament sponsored by UH back in 1965. Still get plenty ohana back in the Islands.
I guess I’m a Klummer, playing pick up basketball after classes in 1960. The only two structures there in the quarry besides Klum Gym that I can recall was the ROTC and dance hall.

#12 Glad your ohana can make it to the game. I saw the show on the Food Network where the Aloha Plate truck won season 4 of āThe Great Food Truck Raceā. One of the big reasons for that win was that people from the great Hawaiian diaspora (people with Hawaii ties or just Hawaiians at heart) would show up where ever the trucks stopped and supported Aloha Plate. Hopefully a similar thing will happen on Friday for the PSU match. That match will be a huge challenge and Na Wahine will need to super focused and bring their A++ game. Having UH fans in the stands might help make the difference. If you can attend and cheer on Na Wahine, please do so; you might be witnessing history.

Iāve updated an Excel spreadsheet on my OneDrive site with Avg. Home Attendance in 2015. The spreadsheet can be sorted by team, conference, AVCA ranking (1-35), AVCA votes, RPI ranking, seeding, exit round, record, etc.

Regarding the Avg. Home Attendance numbers, they include the sub-regional rounds. The attendance numbers are probably reported as tickets sold, not turnstile. Some attendance breakdowns for 2015:
– Avg. Att. of the AVCA Ranked (1-35) = 2,224
– Median Att. of the AVCA Ranked (1-35) = 1,818 (the number in the middle of the set)
– Avg. Att. of the Seeded teams (1-16) = 2,751
– Median Att. of the Seeded teams (1-16) = 1,964
– Avg. Att. of all DIV I WVB teams (1-334) = 636
– Median Att. of all DIV I WVB teams (1-334) = 381
