We’re going to a Regional! I almost forgot what that feels like. I believed from the beginning that they could reach Des Moines and even beat Penn State. Hopefully that latter statement comes true. I think there was more pressure to get out of the sub-regional since we were unable to since 2011. Now, hopefully, they will be a little more relaxed, yet confident, and able to play freely.
This was one of the best days as a fan that I have ever had. Tiff was at least 5 to 10 sec. ahead of espn3 so I knew what was coming before seeing it. For a cringing, heart pounding, pulse-racing fan like me it was the ideal way to calmly enjoy the match. The joy they all expressed in a giant group hug at the end almost made me cry. All the rest will be icing. Don’t get me wrong , Russ Rose is a very nice man but I think the Wahine can beat Penn. St. on a neutral court. Go bows.
I predicted a UH sweep. I just felt they were jetlagged friday and would play better Saturday and that Texas A&m wasn’t as good as their seed.
Now to beat PSU, UH will have to elevate their game even more. PSU is vulnerable but they still haven’t lost a match in the tournament in two years and players like Washington and Courtney can take over a match. I think UH will need to play really smart and serve tough and at Frantti and the PSU libero who are not good passers, avoid serving at Megan Courtney.
Also need to get all 5 hitters involved which means TMO needs to get in on the action and tool the block and not get roofed (like she did against Florida)
I predict UH wins in four, but they have to serve tough and Nikki and the middles need to keep playing well with TMO joining in on the party. I thnk Koelsch will need to be used as well in the front court because Courtney or Frantti can both hit over Higgins.
Can hardly wait to read Cindy’s take on the Bows W over TAMU in the Star-Advertiser’s Sunday Sports section.

December 8 (Tuesday): 10 All-Region Teams, All-Region Honorable Mentions, Region COYs, and Region FOYs.
Hawai’i is in the PACIFIC NORTH (with Washington, Stanford, etc.). 14 players — regardless of position — are honored wth All-Region awards and 6 are named Honorable Mentions.
I think almost everyone on this blog would agree that Nikki Taylor and OMG will be chosen for All-Region. Question is: will Emily Maglio receive postseason regional recognition, or will she be left off the list due to a lack of playing time?
As for this region’s COY, it will be between Shoji (my choice) and Keegan Cook, who got his name in the floodlights as the Dawgs’ 1st year HC. Haley Hodson of Stanford should receive FOY.

Nikki is a shoe in for all region no question but if Olivia isn’t o the first team all region also, It will be an injustice. They both deserve it.
Ms. Cindy- can you ask please, some of the players, how they think their trip to Europe helped them if any ?
Too bad the team can’t play right away. Having to go another week, on the road, living out of a suitcase can get to be exhausting after awhile. Sooner or later, it catches up with you.
Penn St. is having an off year, but they are loaded with talent, so we need to play like we did against TAMU. Should be a great match.
I really like Maglio but I dont think her kills per set are high enough to make all region team, but she has made a huge impact this season. I wish she was a redshirt freshmen and UH would have her for three more years instead of two.
By the way it was a successful day for UH recruits at the California state championships as well. Norene Iosia set her team to second straight division one state title. and beach recruit Julia Chizanskos won her fourth straight Division two state title. Chizanskos is really good defensively, wish she was playing both indoor and beach at UH.
Just noticed that for the second straight year Nebraska, BYU & UW are in the same regional….
13. Yes: Nebraska, Washington and BYU were all in the same regional last year as well. Difference: they’re in the Lexington, Kentucky (and not Seattle) regionals this year.
Interesting fact I just found out: With the Dawgs’ victory over MSU, Washington improved to 30-2, “reaching the 30-win plateau for an unprecedented third straight season.”

17. It will be nice to just beat PSU for once. I think the battle of the middles will be great, Magill and Maglio vs Washington and Thielen and also at opposite Taylor vs Whitney.

Hope the announcers learn how to pronounce the Wahine names in the next broadcast. Couldn’t understand why the announcers kept saying “Hawkeye” in the Aggie broadcast. Realized after a lots of joshing in VT that the announcers was referring to Savanah Kahakai. They butchered Tai Manu-Olevao’s name too.
Okay mission one and two done. Now the task ahead, defeat the reigning two time champions. While Penn St isn’t at the same level as 2913/14 without Mica Hancock, they have a seasoned team for this playoff run. No way that the BOWS can allow the high hitting percentage that they allowed both Texas teams vs PSU.
Time to get back to showing that the number one blocking team in the nation can do it against the top teams in the nation. If the BOWS can stop the Washington slide and it is the best slide in the NCAA, they will give themselves a real chance to win.
PSU hasn’t been playing with as much confidence as they began the year lately, so it is important for the BOWS to get a quick start to put some fear in the hearts of PSU.
This is definitely a measuring stick match for Hawaii, time to establish some respect on the national level for Hawaii’s program regardless of their perceived conference level. This team has all the tools to accomplish the victory, jthey ust have to believe in themselves and know that PSU is as worried about Hawaii as Hawaii is about them.

16. Thanks for the link. Nikki hits the ball so “heavy” it’s like listening to a sledge hammer making contact with the ball. Because of the force and speed and power behind her spikes, especially behind the 3 meter line, the defenders can’t react in time to clearly make a play on the ball.
It was nice to see the contingent of Hawaii fans in the stands and the familiar “Let’s go bows” chant.
Win or lose (of course, we’re going to win), this is a special team of young ladies and we wish them nothing but the best going forward.

Better hope Greeley can play. Today’s article in SA print edition said due to her chronic shoulder problem, there had been doubts that she would have been able to play in these last two matches and had had limited practice time.
She hit .625 vs. TAMU, 10 kills, 0 errors and .300 vs. TCU with 16 kills, plus served and received very well; with 17 digs in the TCU game.
This year the team had 13 days between the end of the regular season and the start of the NCAA’s. Last year they had only 6 days.

Yes, Hawaii first match. As for revenge. no one from the team left. What I remember from the final four was the poor officiating and the up ref calling over Cubi-Otineru ‘and the PSU captain saying I’m having a really bad match, aren’t I.

If nothing else, Greeley is a gamer. they have great medical staff and trainer with them. They aren’t going to let her hurt herself more. But you never know how she’ll feel. She did a lot of stretching before Saturday match. She was pretty amazing. As I wrote, the X Factor.

#32 You are welcome. For me, this was the most complete and satisfying match to date along side the wins against Cal Poly@Mott and Long Beach@Pyramid. The wahines most glaring weakness of pass receive was nullified by Lady Aggie’s most glaring weakness – their very weak serve game. How fortunate for us – so that we can be in system most of the night. It is another great win and showed so much team maturity, focus and unity after that near season ending TCU match. This is indeed a special team and you can just see the hard work that the players and coaches have put in. As fans, we are really fortunate to bear witness to it.

wow, what a performance by the wahine yesterday. after their struggles against tcu on friday, i thought for sure that the tamu match would be a battle. i was even nervous for the wahine team. but hawaii cam out focused, aggressive and with a lot of energy/emotion. they handled in 3 a very good tamu team, on tamu’s home court!

Suggest if you have access to it on your device, download the app for ESPN. You may find it easier to navigate to the games and you may get more reliable streaming than through your browser. If you don’t have reliable broadband, streaming will always be iffy at best. Even if you have reliable broadband, if your match gathers a lot of interest an viewers, it may overwhelm the broadcasters serving host.
The NCAA link to the bracket now has start times and the broadcast stream host, although the Penn State vs. Hawaii bracket currently is the only one lacking the indication of the stream host. Could be an oversight, or possibly there is interest in broadcasting that match over TV since it is likely to gather a pretty substantial audience. Guess we wait on that.

OrbitalRipZ, Interesting to see the results on who is surviving. How many conferences are there in women’s volleyball? What will also be interesting to know is how many teams from those conferences that had 3 or more made it out of round 1?
This RPI things is to promote the Big 5. I remember at one time the NCAA stating that they wanted to have women’s volleyball be represented on a wider basis. Their meaning of a wider basis is for the big schools and conferences. They are doing a reverse on that philosophy on how there are leaving the smaller conferences out of the tournament especially when a team like Long Beach State is left out. The NCAA is speaking with fork tongues.
Darn was hoping the Hawaii/PSU match would be on ESPNU, looks like ESPNU is airing the USC/Creighton match instead, which makes no sense to me since the trojans and Bricio will probably dominate and win easily.

You dont know how happy for the girls, coaches, and state the way they played. I have to say this was their best performance thus far. To sweep Texas AM on their home court really settles the deal if the women play well on the Road. I think the girls have a big chance to get to the Final 4…Now, after getting over the 2nd round hump, they can go out and have fun bring relax…I think Penn St. will have the pressure on their back.
As far as Greeley, in my opinion, I feel she is the next valuable player after Nikki…She steadies that backcourt, a good server, and is a very good OH…I firsthand know how much pain her shoulder is bothering her…I had the same problem like her and I couldn’t hold an object overhead. I know If she didn’t have the injury, she would be very unreal! She truly is a Warrior!! We know Nikki is going through all her injuries top to bottom but wanted to make mention of how Greeley is battling too

On a previous thread, I made a statement that the two weak links in the Wahine armor is their inability to stop the slide and dink shots….and it is still happening, as witnessed by their last two matches against TCU and TAMU.
Unfortunately for us, PSU run their slides to perfection so I’m hoping Dave is shoring up the ladies in this area.
But PSU is definitely beatable if our ladies remain focused and believe in themselves.

36. Actually, you have computed the number of each conference’s teams remaining in the tournament, not each conference’s subregional winning percentage. For example, the Pac12 has 3 out of 7 teams left, or .428. But the conference has a .636 subregional winning percentage (7-4, based on 2-0 from USC, Wash, UCLA; 1-1 Stanf; 0-1 ASU, Ari, Ore).

45. There are 32 total conferences, and each has an AQ for the tournament. So no conference is unrepresented in the tournament.
By the way, the RPI whining has gotten really old. Here are some interesting facts that may surprise you:
Non-Big10/Big12/Pac12/ACC/SEC teams with highest RPI rankings: Western KY (13), BYU (14), Creighton (15), Arkansas State (16), Louisville (19), Colorado State (20), Dayton (22). Such teams that were seeded: BYU (13), Louisville (15), Creighton (16).
Highest rated RPI conferences:
#1: Big 10; #2 Big 12: #3 Pac 12; #4…..West Coast Conference. That’s right, the WCC. Not the ACC, not the SEC. A non-conference record of 90-31 (.744) will do that. You can get a top RPI ranking if you schedule smart and you win in the pre-season.
Yes, UH was screwed (not in terms of established criteria, but in terms of eye-test worthiness/quality) and yes, the RPI is flawed when it comes to seeding according to team quality. But 13/16 seeds still remain (81% of the seeds), so it’s not like a lot of unworthy teams are being seeded (only one of the three seeds (Stanford) was truly upset IMO). The seedings can be improved a bit, but the committee didn’t do a truly horrible job this year. The best thing UH can do to prove the NCAA committee wrong/criteria should be changed is to keep on winning. End of story.

Usually we see his stoic self cracking a smirk/smile every once in a while. Almost got me emotional seeing him raise his arms like that. I wanted to yell “GO BOWS” right along with them!
20. POG – Well said, particularly about how they may be just as worried about Hawaii as Hawaii is worried about them. Often times, we’re so concerned about the jitters the Wahine may feel going into the match facing a caliber of team like Penn State that we forget that they may have the same jitters knowing the outstanding stats that the Wahine has generated in blocking, hitting, etc.

I’m thinking of adding a column for avg. attendance per home game pre-NCAA tournament, if it’s not too difficult to dig those numbers up. Might be interesting to see those numbers. Might spark some discussion whether a team that doesn’t draw above some reasonable minimum number should get a seed over programs that are fan supported. It might be one of those intangible ‘integrity-balance’ issues the NCAA committee should be considering.
Debating to go to the Regionals with 4 Excellent teams playing or wait and see if our ladies make it to Lincoln, Nebraska for the Final 4. I think I will hold off til Saturday, then book my arrangements when we win the Regionals! Now. that’s confidence!

The fact that 13 of the 16 seeds advanced to the regionals does not necessarily validate the committee’s judgment in seeding those teams. NCAA volleyball creates a self-fulfilling prophecy because all the seeds (except for Creighton) hosted the 1st and 2nd rounds, thus getting a huge advantage right off the bat. One could argue that even had all 16 seeds advanced, it wouldn’t necessarily mean they were the best 16 teams — just 16 very good teams given home-court advantage against other very good teams.
#69 Row13: plus, the Seeded generally get cupcakes in round one. Minnesota got Jackson State, sheesh. Creighton got Coastal Carolina (RPI 83), and still managed to lose a set to them. Gotta think the committee was thinking some about the Omaha based fan turnout for the Finals, in giving the #16 seed to Creighton. Slighting Creighton wouldn’t of helped fill all those seats.
Someone pointed “a surprising fact” that 13/16 seeds remain. What’s so surprising about that? Just look at the AVCA Coaches’ Poll: 13/16 of its Top 16 remain (including Hawai), and the Coaches had nothing to do with providing subregional cakewalks for teams like USC, Nebraska, Penn State, etc.
38. Someone smugly pointed out that the title is wrong, which I am well aware of. Any 5th or 6th grader would have pointed it out. Just didn’t have the time to go back and make the obvious correction (title started off one way but piece went another way), like I didn’t have the time to correct the spelling of Russ Rose and other minor errors. I have a life. Just assume that most of those who post here are well-informed that they can pick up obvious typos and lapses.

Nothing to do with the above but was surprised only 2000+ filled the almost 13,000 Texas arena. As I’ve been to the 10,000-seat Alaska Airlines Arena when the Dawgs hosted the Bows — deafening! — I know what a hostile crowd is!
#66 Bleachercoach: the finals venue is in the Century Link Center, Omaha, NE. It’s Creighton’s home court for some of their games. It’s not their normal venue, but they use it for games that draw, like with their interstate rival Nebraska. They’ll get north of 10,000 to attend that one. NU is sited in Lincoln, NE, just a quick drive on I-80 between Lincoln and Omaha (quick when the weather and traffic cooperate).

71. If you’re going to use stats and call others on this blog “wannabe statisticians”, as you did you on 9/28, then you better bring your A game every time. Don’t cherry pick data in a weak attempt to make a point about SOS, and try checking your posts before hitting the submit button once in a blue moon. I could have been very smug by saying a fifth or sixth grader would have known the difference between winning percentage and percentage of teams left.
13/16 seeds remaining was not a surprising fact, but you are making it up as one because you can’t handle having your post being corrected. Not my issue, yours.
69. Most of the seeded teams are actually top tier teams, if you go by record, AVCA ranking, eye test, etc. My point is that the committee didn’t do a horrible job seeding using the established criteria. Give me a few examples other than UH if you disagree.

Not everyone likes a nickname or their ‘handle’ but like many things in life they tend to be inevitable, especially with those that achieve some notoriety. The Rainbow Wahine VB players are locally pretty well known, but are about to receive some extra mainland attention. Many of those folks will wonder what is a ‘wahine’!
I have my own nicknames for some of the Wahine. Likely they’ll never catch-on, but they reflect a bit of a personal feeling they invoke when watching them play. They are:
– Olivia “Sky Walker” Maglio
– Emily “Slap Shot” Magill

#75 Mav. Sorry Mav, didn’t mean dis the cupcakes, some of them brought game. It was why I prefaced the first round foes of the Seeded as ‘generally’ cupcakes. As to your non-cupcake examples, both Stanford and A&M swept their first round foes, with their foe RPI’s in the 60’s. Then both Stanford and A&M went on to round two to get swept themselves. So I suppose an argument could be made that they were so tired out by stressful first round sweeps of their non-cupcake foes that they couldn’t handle round two. But both LMU and Hawaii definitely had tougher first rounds, so kind of deflates that argument.

Btw, picked this up from VT and verified it on Tennessee-Chattanooga’s volleyball website….they had a libero a few years ago whose real name was Paula Passmore. No joke. And she was conference libero of the year, twice.
On nicknames, I’ve enjoyed hearing what the players call their teammates in those interviews by OC Sports.
They appear to be short, because you’d have to say it quick while on the court.
Olivia is shortened to ‘Liv’.
Tayler Higgins is ‘Higgs’.
I think Maglio is shortened to ‘Mags’, though that might just be Kanoa Leahy’s doing.
It sounds like TMO, Nikki Taylor, and Greely are just referred to by thier first names, they’re distinctive on their own.

I asked previously how can I get tickets for the Des Moine regional and sit with other UH fans. I called the UH ticket office as suggested and was told they did not receive an allotment of tickets to regionals. Does anyone know what else I can do or must my party and I sit alone.
