Tomorrow is gonna be a crazy day, Crazy to think one of LMU/Kansas will be in the elite 8.

I hope today the wahine were just rusty/jetlagged and that they play better tomorrow and sweep the aggies.

  2. Steve December 4, 2015 8:14 pm

Repost from the last thread so it does not get lost: is there a link to the post-game press conferences? I’ve checked youtube and the NCAA site with no luck.

  3. Cindy Luis December 4, 2015 8:21 pm

    for those asking about crowd.
    A&M lists 2667.

  4. greenthumb December 4, 2015 8:36 pm

2, thanks for the attendance figure. If the team stayed for the next match or catches it on streaming, at least they know what the atmosphere will be like, so they can be mentally prepared for it on Saturday. Hope all the football fans headed home 😉

  5. tongo December 4, 2015 8:46 pm

What can you say – give credit to TCU who probably played out of their mind and likely their best match of the year. Every dog has its day and tonight it was TCU’s – as they were playing super-heated and at their very best. In the end, our ladies prevail! Am so very proud of the players and staff that they never gave up and fought so very hard. Great win! Congrats for surviving Round 1!

Let’s move on to the Aggie. Let’s go out there and act like we own their court! We need attitude, energy, and focus to “beat” them from the get-go!

  6. nomu December 4, 2015 8:55 pm

That is a good, solid TCU team, strong and athletic. No doubt, they will only get better and will be back in the tournament next year. Listened to their coach’s post match conference, really liked her attitude and it’s obvious the team respects, believes in and trusts her. Hats off to them, gave Hawaii all they could handle. Great first round matchup.

  7. T103 December 4, 2015 9:05 pm

So tomorrow’s match, streaming live on Internet? If so, specifically where? What website? And do I need some sort of subscription already in place to view the match at 430??

  8. AdmrVT December 4, 2015 9:18 pm

Ex-wahine foes American & Wichita State prevailed too. With UCLA and Florida, 4 survived their 1st game.

  9. greenthumb December 4, 2015 9:22 pm

6, Friday’s ESPN3 announcers said they have Saturday’s call also on ESPN3. Yes, you need a subscription to access. Both Oceanic and HawaiianTel will get you in (don’t know about the other guys).

Here’s a link to the list of upcoming matches.
    http://espn.go.com/watchespn/index#type/upcoming/sport/volleyball/startDate/20151205/

  10. doug December 4, 2015 9:35 pm

thought the espn3 announcers did a good job. They were honest in their assessments for both teams.

  11. doug December 4, 2015 9:39 pm

Wish coach Dave was more positive with the wahines. He could take a lesson from the TCU coach. I bet he would get better results.

  12. Not an Expert December 4, 2015 10:48 pm

Why Shoji keeps his starters in although they are doing bad. Cindy asked Shoji about him subbing Castillo & Granato early but not using them late. He said they weren’t going to win with that lineup.

Now we know that Shoji will live and die by his set starting lineup. This scenario will continue. Things that will happen when behind would be to use his subs for a short while. Successful or not he will go back to his starters again in the next set.

This is his mind’s habit and belief. Reason why the chances for him to win another title is slim. The teams are better going deeper in the tournament and as they exploit UH weakness there will be a game that they will not be able to come back and win.

There were many opportunities during the season when UH were obviously a more dominant team than their opponent and would be difficult for them to lose the game. However he never experimented using another 2 players for the starters in a set to view how they can perform with the other starters long enough. Thus no criteria to have them be used in the tournament unless there is an injury. As he stated “they weren’t going to win with that lineup.

  13. wow December 5, 2015 3:13 am

    #12, lol

  14. 2left December 5, 2015 4:31 am

#11 – For better or worse, it seems that has been Dave’s style for decades. There are certain players whom he believes the potential positives outweigh the potential negatives, and he’d rather take the chance on trying to win than trying not to lose. He’s the kind of guy who either wins big or loses big at the craps table. “Hard 8s been good to me all night! Let it ride!” Me — I’m too chicken for that.

  15. Row13 December 5, 2015 5:12 am

Some matches you win easily, some you have to grind out. Friday’s win wasn’t pretty, but it’s good to know this Wahine team is mentally resilient, can weather the storm and play it point by point.

  16. mauna December 5, 2015 5:41 am

Cindy, let the SID know that she has UH at 26-2 and losing to TCU on the main Hawaii Athletics site. Well jetlagged I guess.

  17. Cindy Luis December 5, 2015 6:51 am

    12. the quote was in reference to having both Granato and Castillo in the BACK ROW at the same time. He said that wasn’t the solution and weren’t going to win with that. They need both Manu-Olevao and Greeley as a back-row option.

  18. Cindy Luis December 5, 2015 6:53 am

    16. guess it’s fixed. what you said was on the UH page is not what is there now.

  19. Cindy Luis December 5, 2015 6:58 am

    11. not sure what you mean about wanting him to be more positive. TCU coach was gracious in defeat. Shoji was a gracious winner, gave a lot of credit to TCU playing well. And he knew his team didn’t.

  20. Cindy Luis December 5, 2015 7:07 am

As for ESPN3, my understanding is you don’t need a subscription. But of course I could be wrong. I accessed it without signing into TWC.

    You can access it through
    http://espn.go.com/watchespn/
at the moment you have to go to Upcoming to see that the UH match is listed there
When it actually starts (230 HST) the link on the home page changes.
    there is no pregame.

think you can also go through the NCAA site
    http://www.ncaa.com/game/volleyball-women/d1/2015/12/05/texas-am-hawaii

    10. you are the only one who had positive things to say about the UH-TCU announcers. Twitter blew up with complaints.

  21. wahinez4eva December 5, 2015 8:09 am

Why is it showing that the Wahine’s loss to TCU, on the UH Wahine Scedule, or am I reading it wrong?

  22. tom December 5, 2015 8:29 am

    GOOD MORNING,HAWAII1

Unless I read it wrong, NOT AN EXPERT seems to be on a “fire the coach” mode.

Coach Shoji’s habits seem to have made him the wines coach in WVB.

    What’s wrong with that?

  23. doug December 5, 2015 9:14 am

Cindy, my comment was more the way coach Dave rips his players when they come out.

  24. kalihifc December 5, 2015 9:31 am

The Hawai’i athletics ig has a video of the team members heartily singing “Happy Birthday” to Dave after last night’s game. I hope they’re singing a happy song after tonight’s game, too.

  25. PBnJz December 5, 2015 9:33 am

Cindy, just want to confirm…when I check results page on hawaiiathletics.com, it does say the TCU match was a loss. Also for whoever thinks Dave is too harsh on our players…Dave is one of the most soft-spoken people I’ve ever met. If we as fans get as upset as we do when the players aren’t playing well, how do you think he feels! He’s been coaching them all season and if they’re making mistakes he’s repeatedly coached them not to make, don’t you think he’s got the right to speak to them a bit harshly? He’s not the Bobby Knight of volleyball…whatever “harshness” he uses with them is still from a place of love and concern. And they’re big kids, they can take it! And don’t forget, the 2009 team nicknamed him “Grandpa”…he’s not some out of control maniac screaming at his team…he’s the #2 winningest coach in Div I volleyball history! I think he knows a thing or two about what to do and how to do it…

  26. greenthumb December 5, 2015 9:52 am

21 and 25, I am seeing the loss also on the hawaiiathletics VB schedule page, and also when I clicked through to the match’s box score. I was disappointed that our schedule took so long to be updated since it seems that could have been done by someone still in Honolulu, even if they didn’t have the next day’s info yet. Speaking of which, it finally got updated to a time for the match, but the “details” clickthrough still is bare.

Speaking of TCU, have a look at its public site. It’s very easy to navigate and has a *lot* of useful info … even screen backgrounds with the school’s catch phrase (?). Yesterday, it already had a post with post-match comments from the coach etc. — afternoon our time, after-hours theirs.

Being in the post-season for any team has the side benefit for staff members of being in proximity to staffs of other schools beyond our usual competitors and conference-mates and is an opportunity for conversations that can be built on later as ways to build what used to be your Rolodex.

So I am hoping that Matlin or someone on his staff is looking for simple, low-cost ways to build fan enthusiasm, and I bet other schools would be gracious about chatting with UH about things they’ve tried that work and don’t. (Also I wantzwantz a street-pole banner like what TCU is auctioning, only of course with the proper logo and a green background. Wouldn’t those be a cool sight on Dole Street during various athletic seasons, if only for key games/matches? And then sell them after for some funds for the athletics program.)

  27. Ron December 5, 2015 9:59 am

Dave is very intense. Yesterday he needed to use every trick in the book to push the team to a victory. I think they feed off of his emotion and play better. No one cares more about these girls or wants them to feel the pride of playing up to their potential than Dave.

  28. kimo browner December 5, 2015 10:01 am

Good comments this morning. Many fans are frustrated with Coach Shoji but he is as stubborn as they come. He will not budge. My thing is we need the big block at the net. That is the weapon he cannot marginalize. Especially today with TAMU and an exceptional assortment of MHs and strong OHs. Subs get tricky bc of rules and it looks like HAW will be stuck w TMO in the back row come hell or high water.
Wishing the wahine the best and hopefully they all will have their game shoes tied tightly today. Go Bows!

  29. islandman December 5, 2015 10:19 am

    2. … Link to post match interviews is on the below webpage :

  30. greenthumb December 5, 2015 10:31 am

Re: ESPN3 access, did some more reading and it looks like you get free access as part of your internet subscription as long as your provider is on the dropdown list.

  31. Kryon December 5, 2015 10:37 am

Is the game shown other than online?

  32. islandman December 5, 2015 10:53 am

Humorous how the TV commentators pronounce Manu-Olevao and Kahakai, several different ways during the match. The BYUH streaming announcer of the UH Wahine basketball game was pretty good until he signed off with “Aloha and Mahulu” or mahalu.

  33. OrbitalRipZ December 5, 2015 11:06 am

Overall excellent article on Wahine by Lewis in today’s/Saturday’s Star-Advertiser. After mentioning that TCU (when they were members of the WAC) never finished higher than 5th, Lewis writes:

“Subsequent membership in the lucrative Big 12 changed all that, and TCU now spends an average of $15, 565 per player for women’s volleyball, compared to $11, 160 for UH, according to recent federal Equity in Athletics figures. Yes, UH has bigger crowds and a more storied past, but schools such as TCU are closing — and in some cases surmounting — what was once a considerable gap.”

Congrats to the teams that took down a few of the money-rich Power Five in Round 1 — UH, American of Patriot League, Wichita State of MVC — and in Round 2 — LMU of WCC.

    GO BOWS!

(Who cares but I’m a little upset that neither of the Star-Advertiser articles on the Wahine today mentioned that this match came 13 days after their last match. Guess they didn’t want to make excuses, but I don’t think of it as an excuse, just a fact. The other time UH had such a long interval — played Irvine on 10/17 then Riverside on 10/30 — I remember some SSU fans, during the set that they lost, boo-ing the Bows for their sloppy plays against the Big West bottom-feeder.)

  34. tongo December 5, 2015 11:09 am

#25 Totally agree. I had posted that Shoji rides his team hard especially leading up to the tournament. However, I would also say from watching 30+ years starting when I attended UH, there is also genuine respect. Past comments from previous players going back 3 decades affirm that there is widespread affection for their coach. A old friend of mine who played for Shoji said that Dave is very direct and tough – but after a while, the players understand that it is not personal. Today, my friend remains in awe of Shoji’s dedication to the program and the players. Call it old school or whatever, but it is the way he rides.

  35. nomu December 5, 2015 11:18 am

TCU is very well coached. They have very good all around skills, particularly swing blocking and getting to the pins quickly, impressed. Physical team, good hitting skills. We’ll see how A&M stacks up today.

  36. nomu December 5, 2015 11:24 am

Just watched the post match interview. Thought OMG summed it up well. If everyone stays focused, we should give A&M a good match today.

  37. 'ohanaInBellingham December 5, 2015 12:10 pm

Thank goodness that http://bit.ly/1LVlemJ, who played briefly with the U-20 Mexican national team, has not seen court time this season and will likely not be across the net tonight.

  38. tongo December 5, 2015 1:02 pm

Just re-watched the TCU match. To me, the players just seem off especially in the timing of the blocks, as well as the excellent play by TCU. Hopefully, it was just jet lag and/or rust from not playing for 2 weeks. Having watched the Texas A&M match, I think we match up well with them and I like our chances. I believe in this team as they showed tremendous strength fighting off TCU. Our ladies have the inner courage and confidence to do it. Go bows – we are all supporting you!

  39. greenthumb December 5, 2015 1:14 pm

31, ESPN3 is online only but maybe check with a restaurant or theater?

  40. 'ohanaInBellingham December 5, 2015 1:21 pm

    Creideamh, Nikki!

  41. MAKA December 5, 2015 1:43 pm

I think so many posters here are so very critical. Seems to me they want a final 4 every year. which is unreasonable, given our sports and financial history and support from administration. Lighten up. Allow the ladies to have fun and enjoy their time in college here.

  42. Cindy Luis December 5, 2015 1:51 pm

What I have noticed about Shoji is that he does keep coaching when a player comes off the court when subbing out. He also has been frustrated when players make the same mistakes or don’t follow the game plan, such as the blocking scheme.

As for the ‘stubbornness’ if you had seen how poor the set location was when Koelsch was setting to the left, you would understand why they stayed with Higgins. Higgins blocked well last night, as well as any Wahine with 4 BA.

  43. greenthumb December 5, 2015 2:10 pm

T minus whatever and the excitement is building. Go TEAM! Very proud of your heart yesterday and wishing you all the best today.

  44. greenthumb December 5, 2015 2:20 pm

Hmmm. Looks like the NCAA Game Center details on UH and TCU are transposed.

  45. Cindy Luis December 5, 2015 2:20 pm

new thread up with game links

44, make that UH and A&M
