Both Rolovich and Norwood played at Hawaii, and Rolovich was an assistant there from 2008-11.

Writer of this article asks, “In Vegas, the school gets a better payout, you don’t have to hassle with half-spanning the Pacific and playing in a town that pretty much hates your guts from back when you used to steal all the good recruits from the Rainbows, and you get your business taken care of before the holiday rush (Dec. 19).”

Hawaii: Former head coach June Jones is the leading candidate for the Hawaii head coaching job, according to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg. Tulsa co-defensive coordinator / safeties coach Brian Norwood and Nevada offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach Nick Rolovich are also in the mix. Norwood and Rolovich are former UH players, and Rolovich is a former UH assistant.

Lately, I’ve been looking at some old footage on YouTube of the days that JJ was coach.
We were so spoiled by him. 3rd and 15 situations were no sweat! Nowadays, 3rd and 3 situations make us nervous.

Old School Dave — I think the writer was too harsh with the “hate BYU” words. We who lived through all our losses at Aloha stadium just wanted to beat BYU so bad…especially after a decade of heartbreaking losses to BYU. More frustration than hate. UH-BYU was a true rivalry –literally a cross island one with the BYU campus also in Laie. The sold out stadium and the parking lot was a sea of tailgaters… all looking “local” and only distinguishable by whether they wore green or blue. BYUH fans were friends and neighbors. We teased, jeered and boo’d each other and it was intense in the stadium. But the next day we were friends and neighbors again–just one group had a smile of their face…usually the people in blue until Daddy Wags and Paul Johnson entered the picture.
A generation has gone by since those days and the WAC rivalry is gone. No great rivalry now and no hate as far as I know. Like Boise, we want to beat BYU on general principle. If BYU is playing in the Hawaii Bowl (and UH isn’t), a lot us would probably cheer for BYU.
It’s time our AD Matlin forego an early or mid December announcement and do it now before November 30th. The 30th is when Coaches can talk to potential recruits. We will be behind if we wait too long. To me it’s a no brainer hire June Jones.

If Jasper is interested and gets the job he’d have leave Navy early. Navy has a game against Army on Dec. 12. If they beat Houston this Saturday and win the conference title against Temple or South Florida the following week they could be playing a New Years Day bowl. No way Hawaii is going to wait until then. There would be so much time lost on recruiting and prospecting.

Funny how BYU is now not the primary school of choice by many island high school players compared to back in the 80s, sans the ones who are motivated by religious reasons. Even the top players in the State of Utah are choosing Power-5 schools, such as the neighboring Univ. of Utah over BYU. Going independent has not been kind to the Cougars. I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to rejoin the MWC in the near future. UH had better get their program back in order before that happens.

If JJ wants the job, it would be a no-brainer for Matlin to give it to him. it would be pretty much a guarantee, really. and if this does occur, where would rolo fit into the mix? JJ is THE offensive coordinator. there will be no need for a 2nd coach for this position…..

I think the choice of Utah over BYU is more of kids wanting to live in Salt Lake City compare to Provo and prefer Utah cause it doesn’t have a religious affiliation.

I have a feeling that most or if not all of the current coaching staff will be looking for new jobs if the (2-10) Hawaii Warriors lose to (1-10) Louisiana Monroe in this Pillow fight game. There is no excuse to lose to a hapless, injury plagued Louisiana Monroe Warhawk team at home in Aloha Stadium.
Hire June Jones already, lets turn this football program around and create some excitement!

Miano is our best choice for HC we may never win conference championships but we will be going to bowl games.
If we screw up selecting our next Head coach we be either going to be losing a football program or be dropped into the FCS division.

I don’t think the outcome of this game will dictate whether or not most of the current coaching staff will be seeking employment elsewhere. At most I think three coaches are retained if even that. I’d like to see if Naeole could prosper under another coach and different system.

“University of Hawai’i senior linebacker Lance Williams is featured in the latest installment of H-TV’s video series, “Homegrown.” Raised in Kalihi’s Kuhio Park Terrace, Williams attended Farrington High School where he was a four-sport athlete before signing with UH in 2011.
Affectionately nicknamed “Keke,” Williams is a four-year letterman with the Rainbow Warriors, who has started all 12 games at outside linebacker this season and tallied 53 tackles, including 7.0 for loss. Through one of his classes, the Honolulu native connected with the Boys & Girls Club of Hawai’i and has continued to serve as a mentor to Hawai’i’s youth.”
I don’t think Matlin can announce a coach before Nov 30. I don’t think they are far enough along the State hiring process yet.
I don’t know the process exactly, but job postings need to be posted for X number of days before interviews can begin. Typically there are at least 2 rounds of interviews. Maybe more since this job is essentially the highest paid State Employee. Interviews need to be scheduled and that can get tricky when there are candidates that are actively coaching with their current teams, especially current head coaches that need to keep things on the down low to keep the local media and their ADs off their backs.
It’s been reported that over 50 people have applied, so it’s going to take a bunch of time just to weed out the unqualified applicants. Matlin can’t just look at a name and move him up to the top without properly scrutinizing the application.
This is probably why he named the advisory group, just to speed up the application/resume review process.

Turfwars: There continue to be rumblings of BYU rejoining the MWC. They had visions of the Big 12, but I don’t see that happening.
I think that the main issue with BYU is the problems with scheduling. They had some “name” teams at the beginning of the season in Nebraska and UCLA, along with Missouri at the tail end, but the remainder of their schedule leaves much to be desired (they played Wagner?). The result has been a negative effect on their recruiting. Their Honor Code is no help, either, even to LDS players, from what I’ve heard. The best kids in their state are opting for Utah due to their being in the Pac-12, and competitive, at that.

I wonder how it is that UH can name an interim coach without any strings or delays?
In which case make JJ the interim and then name JJ the new HC after procedural time has elapsed? can do it that way, or do they have to name a person already on the staff as interim??

33… If UH drops football, the entire Athletic Department would likely be abolished. UH cannot drop divisions because there’s there would be even more losses in revenue. Historically, home games vs FCS opponents typically draw the lowest attendance at Aloha Stadium in any given season.
Attendance isn’t going up significantly vs a season’s full of Portland St, Idaho St, or Southern Utah at home. Plus, road trips don’t get less expensive per person because you’re in the FCS.
Also, Oceanic would likely force re-negotiation, file lawsuit or terminate UH’s lucrative (relatively speaking) TV deal if UH dropped to a lower division as PPV buys would likely drop due to poor competition.
The only cost savings to dropping divisions is the lower scholarship limit of 63 for FCS (85 for FBS). That’s 26% savings, but that only amounts to a maximum of $600k savings (26% savings x 85 FBS Scholarships x $30k out of state tuition). That doesn’t come close to balancing the budget, plus this does not account for revenue losses from being in a lower division.
Remember, Football is still, by far, UH’s most profitable sport, even in its current state. The problem UH has is that football is not profiting enough to pay for all the other non-revenue sports or sports that have revenue but operate in the red (Baseball, Softball, W. Basketball for example).
UH needs to cut costs (sports), but that’s a complicated matter because of Title IX requirements and sports required by conference affiliation. Non-revenue sports such as Golf, Soccer, Tennis and Track can’t be cut because of Big West Conference requirements. Sports at risk of being cut would be non-Big West sports such as Mens Volleyball, sailing, swimming & diving.
It’s complicated, but ultimately UH Football isn’t going anywhere unless UH (or the legislature) pulls the plug on UH Athletics all together.

45. Tedford is interesting… but did he apply?
Dare I say… another “QB Guru”. BUT, he has quality HC experience, unlike the last guy with no HC experience.
The plus side is that he helped rebuild Cal from it’s worst season ever in 2001 to a pretty solid program with some really good players going to the NFL while he was there. Cal is not a well run athletics program with lots of issues, so winning there means you’re doing something right.
CFL salaries aren’t big (I saw that a typical team spends around $2M total for coaching staffs & front office staff), but CFL and NCAA FB are different, so there could be some appeal for Tedford to return to college coaching.
The knocks I see are that he has been trending down his last 3 years at Cal, and going 7-11 + playoff loss at BC Lions. In between he’s had some health issues that cut his only NFL job short (portion of 2014 TB Buccaneers as OC).
Pluses and minus, but he’d probably be as good of an experienced head coach you could get for the money UH is going to pay.
Better than JJ? It’s pretty debatable from an objective viewpoint, but JJ has the fan memories on his side.

JJ won’t kill the program, just his name will boost sales for a year or two.
The problem I see with JJ is that I don’t know if he’s committed for the long run. If things go south for 2 years, would runaway and retire? He’s not getting paid enough to stick it out… heck, he walked away from a juicy $2M+ job once everything went sour.
I do see value in JJ in the short term, but as I’ve said before, Matlin needs to have a replacement plan ready he picks JJ as the coach.

50… The problem is no conference wants UH and the hassle of transpacific travel for all sports. That’s why UH is being made to pay for travel subsidies.
UH needs a conference association far more than any conference needs UH in it.
Football scheduling (and all other sport scheduling) becomes a nightmare as an independent. UH already has a hard enough time as it is scheduling their 5 non-conference slots with FBS opponents, can you imagine trying to schedule 12 or 13 games, and keeping in mind most logistical opponents are locked up in conference play from late Sept thru November.
Can you imagine baseball or softball trying to fill 50+ game schedules as an independent?

2. He understands our cultural landscape
3. He won’t get frustrated with our political and UH systematic nuances from his experience with the program
4. Everyone thinks his run and shoot is obsolete but he just needs to update his system. He has said he has some new wrinkles he wants to install.
5. He is back home in Hawaii where he wants to be
6. He is schooled in marketing
7. His batteries are recharged and wants this job to bring Hawaii back
8. He has a strong fan base that will bring immediate dividents for AD Matlin bringing fans back to Aloha Stadium
But no more Hawaii Warriors vs Rainbow Warriors just too much pilikia and not pono
One more thing..he is a player’s coach and our student/athletes will respond to him and have fun.

well, considering that he coached UH for 9 years before leaving, and coached at SMU for 6 whole seasons before leaving during the 7th, I think this is doubtful.

people think that it’s obsolete but when pressed on it, they can’t articulate why in any kind of technical or meaningful sense. this is probably mainly because people who claim this have no idea what they’re talking about and don’t even have a basic functional understanding of what the run and shoot actually IS (aside from cosmetic things like shotgun, single back, four wide receivers), but will pretend that they do.

if you feel that SMU went 5-7 primarily because of schematic reasons (i.e. the offense itself was to blame because the defense was doing x,y, and z, and shutting down the run and shoot on a technical level, therefore the run and shoot is ‘outdated’) rather than all the other factors that could’ve led to a 5-7 season, i’d love to hear why.

#57 ot808, only problem I have with JJ is that he knew he was leaving before the Sugar Bowl against Georgia. It showed, he checked out mentally, you could see it in his eyes and body language. More so it was like he did not give a darn with his play calling. It’s like he let down his team, his coaches and us fans.

JJ actually did kill the program the day he accepted the job at SMU. He could have chosen to stay but he didn’t. Sure some say he left because he needed people to see what was wrong with UH. Did that work, yeah to a degree. Can he save the program? Maybe, he did it before. I’ll still have reservations of course.

no. that’s not what i’m saying at all.

usually when we talk about coaches “killing the program,” it’s in the context of the coach being extremely unsuccessful and running the program into the ground and leaving it in much worse condition than when he got hired.
for example: von appen “killed the program.” norm chow DEFINITELY “killed the program.”
saying that june jones killed the program because he took a better job offer at another school and the coaches who were hired after him ranged from mediocre (mcmackin) to extremely terrible (norm chow) makes no sense.
That’s like saying bob wagner killed the UH football program at the time because after he got fired, von appen drove the program off a cliff. or it’s like saying riley wallace killed UH basketball because after he retired, UH basketball has been pretty terrible until now.
JJ’s name being mentioned on the blog has created more comments than any other coach who has applied. Meaning he can stir interest.
Blaming JJ for killing the program is ludicrous. The reason why is that there were a lot of people taking advantage of freebies getting and being at the Sugar Bowl. No one saying let’s use the extra cash to help the football program to get it to greater heights. Not even the chancellor and the president coming forth and saying we are overriding the AD and extending a contract to JJ.
No leader came forth with a plan to take UH to the next level. No coach or administrator had any inkling on how to take advantage of getting to a higher level. A ship that had lost a captain due to the admiral screwing up. He got UH to one of the top bowls on a PT boat. Not having a destroyer or aircraft carrier as a vehicle.
Now over the last 8 years UH a ship without a rudder, has crashed upon the rocks. A life boat with a person is on who can rebuild this ship and have it sail with a direction and purpose in mind. This man can get it started again with a PT boat, then a destroyer and finally an aircraft carrier provided the president will be 100% supportive of building a high caliber program.

Islandman, those schools that you mentioned don’t have to travel 2,500 for road games.
Not an Expert I like your analogy about the PT boat. I am in agreement that the statement that JJ killed the program is ludicrous and misinformed. This is not the time to move slowly in hiring a new coach. Matlin needs to get his butt moving and stop this waiting game and hire JJ pronto.
I don’t know if JJ will get the job again, but I did catch passes from him at Cooke Field in the early 70s when I was living at Varsity Circle. Also there to catch passes was JJ’s friend Mel DeLaura. Ah, memories!!!
1) JJ is available now and can hit the ground running.
2) Probably already have a majority of his staff committed if hired.
3) ESPN will run the story and keep tabs on him and UH. Free exposure that will
help recruiting. He has probably spoken with enough Hawaii high players
that may give UH a better chance of landing some blue chippers.
4) Will make it fun to watch football again with a quick striking offense.
5) Fund raising and with his foundation that he could use to help bring in more
money for the program.
6) His NFL contacts maybe not as many as before but enough to help his players
get an audition if they do not get drafted.
7) Odds with him is greater for a turnaround than a coach with no head coach
experience. Other head coaches will not understand the local culture as JJ
will and will not have that as a problem.
8) He may do it at a bargain price to help his assistant coaches get paid more.
9) He will not use this as another stepping stone but part of his plan is to have a
succession plan by grooming one of his assistant for the job when he is ready
to step down.
10) My guess is his payoff would be the greater satisfaction in helping bring back
the fortune of UH football, thereafter having that feeling of accomplishment
& Aloha extended to him as he lives the remainder of his life in Hawaii.

My gut feeling is Matlin is looking for a young up and comer. If he were leaning towards JJ he would’ve closed the posting date already rather than to keep extenting it. JJ has the most public support judging by comments here, comments to written articles and comments on sports shows. Benjy had the same public support but Matlin went with a relatively unknown to the general public. Ganot’s hiring received a lukewarm reaction but is now picking up some steam giving his initial success.
I trust Matlin is taking the short and long term views of who is going to work out best for the program. He knows he’s staking his job on whoever he picks. I’ll support whoever he picks.

Our conference rivals destroy teams that run the run and shoot offense yes JJ had success in past because no one expected it to be so effective.
But now teams will be ready.
and for JJ to insert his new play techniques will be a few years for players to adapt to it and execute it to the point where they use it in game time situations.
Just listen to coach miano he has the hunger and determination to be HeadCoach.
So I say again hireing JJ will destroy the football Program just like I dreamed of our lost to Fresno State.
I hope I am mistaken and he does the opposite when he does get hired.
He better rethink of using the Triple option offense his friends have been pleading him to use but too stubborn to accept.
So yes JJ will be the Same Ol Coach like the one we had ….will it replicates the same undefeated and championships season’s.

The QB that come down once in awhile to throw in the afternoon was Elroy Chong. Did not have the pleasure of seeing JJ out there. BTW. I’m a firm believer good head coaches are born rather than made. They have the innate quality of true leadership. They have the ability to organize everyone below them to perform the task they’re suppose to do whether it’s a player, coach or support staffer. They put people in positions to succeed and hold them accountable if they are not. They recognize a person’s potential and find ways to develop it.
They show this ability at an early stage in their careers. When I think of the better active coaches college or pro they all seem to have gotten their first HC gig in their 30s to early 40s. Tomey and JJ fit this profile. Their personalities and styles are all different but they have the ability to lead, to give direction to others.

53… I hear people say this a lot, however the schools you mention receive a much higher proportion of university funding to keep their athletics running than UH gives to athletics. There have been a few articles about this fairly recently.
Also saying UH would save money by cutting football is a completely false statement.
UH football is scheduled to PROFIT around $2 million in 2015. Cutting $2 million profit just added $2 million to the deficit.
Even if it’s not performing like it used to, you don’t cut the one program that makes the most money.

79… UH probably can’t afford Jasper. Plus converting to an option offense will take multiple recruiting classes to get the right offensive personnel to run it effectively. It might be an option long term, but I don’t think there’s much appetite within UH leadership for a major change in offensive style that requiresG a major roster overhaul. I think they would prefer a coach that can install the bulk of his offense right away with the returning players.
Unfortunately UH isn’t going to be paying enough salary to attract the “perfect hire”. Everybody that’s realistically available is either unproven as a HC or has several flaws that need to be worked around. Given that the last two HCs were 1st time HC and both showed an inability to effectively manage the numerous non-coaching responsibilities a HC has to do. I think that could lower the odds for Miano and Rolovich or any other 1st time HC applicant.

Hope the friends families and fans turn out for the last one-it would truly be beneficial to the program players and community. Have not missed. A game and attended 4 mainland games. This past Saturday I told my wife I might turn in early and almost did at Midnight-my pride love of the program and thought of the bright future would not let me so I finished at about 130. After watching the video of Lance Williams I thought to myself how can you not support a guy like this-I am sure he is not the only one who does things like this. Allstate Insurance has a Good Hands Community Service Award that recognizes players who give back while still enrolled I do not recall ever seeing a UH candidate-hopefully in the future we will nominate one-Mr Williams get my good handshake award for his efforts!

Ok a little football. ULM will touch down sometime today and spend Thursday and Friday before the game. This is not there last game they have one more for a total of 13. From the injury report they are beat up more than the Warriors and looks as if a Grad QB who is number 4 on the chart will get the start. For the finale I can only hope the Warriors come out with ears pinned back to take the last one and get Paul Harris about 150 plus. Wouldn’t mind seeing Camanse-Stevens have a big night out of the slot-Hey it’s been a long year how bout a win! GO WARRIORS!

Reading Reardon’ s article this morning and then looking at ST’ s regarding Naeole, it may be worth Matlin’ s while to interview, if interested, Naeole, in spite of his not making the full requirements desired. What does he (Matlin) have to lose?
Naeole appears to have command, is detail oriented, demands discipline and understands the game. He may not have the coaching “name recognition” like other favorites posted here, but he may be a sleeper. Why not find out?

This is pure speculation as I do not know Coach Naeole.
The more I think about it, the more I am interested in giving him a shot. I believe that he and his coaches may have a hard time ‘recruiting as I don’t believe his philosophy would paint any rosy picture. He’d tell the recruit why he wants him and why the UH, but I believe that he’d also let the recruit that there are never guarantees on his team for positions. If you don’t earn it you don’t play. Earning it come with the expected responsibility he would demand of each in the classroom, at practice, in training, in the community and on the field. Not take personal responsibility in any of these, you don’t get a chance to play.
In today’s world of somewhat pampered sometimes self anointed stars who believe teams need them more than the responsibility of being a part of a team, that may not fly with recruit or family. But at the end of the day, what he would get would be commitment to the team. Sounds like how Boise State got started on their path to success.
Seems like Coach Naeole has this philosophy. Old school? Maybe not for everyone, but a nice way to build a strong foundation; again referencing Boise State and the success they have enjoyed.

Recruiting, getting a new staff and getting the returning players on the same page and look to the future are all keys to hitting the ground running.

Hawaii: Former head coach June Jones is the leading candidate for the Hawaii head coaching job, according to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg. Tulsa co-defensive coordinator / safeties coach Brian Norwood and Nevada offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach Nick Rolovich are also in the mix. Norwood and Rolovich are former UH players, and Rolovich is a former UH assistant.
Lately, I’ve been looking at some old footage on YouTube of the days that JJ was coach.
We were so spoiled by him. 3rd and 15 situations were no sweat! Nowadays, 3rd and 3 situations make us nervous.

Old School Dave — I think the writer was too harsh with the “hate BYU” words. We who lived through all our losses at Aloha stadium just wanted to beat BYU so bad…especially after a decade of heartbreaking losses to BYU. More frustration than hate. UH-BYU was a true rivalry –literally a cross island one with the BYU campus also in Laie. The sold out stadium and the parking lot was a sea of tailgaters… all looking “local” and only distinguishable by whether they wore green or blue. BYUH fans were friends and neighbors. We teased, jeered and boo’d each other and it was intense in the stadium. But the next day we were friends and neighbors again–just one group had a smile of their face…usually the people in blue until Daddy Wags and Paul Johnson entered the picture.
A generation has gone by since those days and the WAC rivalry is gone. No great rivalry now and no hate as far as I know. Like Boise, we want to beat BYU on general principle. If BYU is playing in the Hawaii Bowl (and UH isn’t), a lot us would probably cheer for BYU.

If this is true then that’s extremely sad. Sports hate and rivalries fuel traditions and fan bases.
If Jasper is interested and gets the job he’d have leave Navy early. Navy has a game against Army on Dec. 12. If they beat Houston this Saturday and win the conference title against Temple or South Florida the following week they could be playing a New Years Day bowl. No way Hawaii is going to wait until then. There would be so much time lost on recruiting and prospecting.
Funny how BYU is now not the primary school of choice by many island high school players compared to back in the 80s, sans the ones who are motivated by religious reasons. Even the top players in the State of Utah are choosing Power-5 schools, such as the neighboring Univ. of Utah over BYU. Going independent has not been kind to the Cougars. I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to rejoin the MWC in the near future. UH had better get their program back in order before that happens.

I think the choice of Utah over BYU is more of kids wanting to live in Salt Lake City compare to Provo and prefer Utah cause it doesn’t have a religious affiliation.
I know I would choice Utah if I had a choice.
I have a feeling that most or if not all of the current coaching staff will be looking for new jobs if the (2-10) Hawaii Warriors lose to (1-10) Louisiana Monroe in this Pillow fight game. If we screw up selecting our next Head coach we be either going to be losing a football program or be dropped into the FCS division.
I don’t think the outcome of this game will dictate whether or not most of the current coaching staff will be seeking employment elsewhere. At most I think three coaches are retained if even that. I’d like to see if Naeole could prosper under another coach and different system.
JJ, Rolo and Miano. The main thing they have in common is Hawaii is the only place their names are mentioned as possible HC candidates. Is this a good thing or not?

I don’t think Matlin can announce a coach before Nov 30. I don’t think they are far enough along the State hiring process yet.
I don’t know the process exactly, but job postings need to be posted for X number of days before interviews can begin. Typically there are at least 2 rounds of interviews. Maybe more since this job is essentially the highest paid State Employee. Interviews need to be scheduled and that can get tricky when there are candidates that are actively coaching with their current teams, especially current head coaches that need to keep things on the down low to keep the local media and their ADs off their backs.
It’s been reported that over 50 people have applied, so it’s going to take a bunch of time just to weed out the unqualified applicants. Matlin can’t just look at a name and move him up to the top without properly scrutinizing the application.
This is probably why he named the advisory group, just to speed up the application/resume review process.
Come on Matlin; make the announcement of JJ’s selection as HC. Valuable time is a-wasting.

I think that the main issue with BYU is the problems with scheduling. They had some “name” teams at the beginning of the season in Nebraska and UCLA, along with Missouri at the tail end, but the remainder of their schedule leaves much to be desired (they played Wagner?). The result has been a negative effect on their recruiting. Their Honor Code is no help, either, even to LDS players, from what I’ve heard. The best kids in their state are opting for Utah due to their being in the Pac-12, and competitive, at that.

33… If UH drops football, the entire Athletic Department would likely be abolished. UH cannot drop divisions because there’s there would be even more losses in revenue. Historically, home games vs FCS opponents typically draw the lowest attendance at Aloha Stadium in any given season.
Attendance isn’t going up significantly vs a season’s full of Portland St, Idaho St, or Southern Utah at home. Plus, road trips don’t get less expensive per person because you’re in the FCS.
Also, Oceanic would likely force re-negotiation, file lawsuit or terminate UH’s lucrative (relatively speaking) TV deal if UH dropped to a lower division as PPV buys would likely drop due to poor competition.
The only cost savings to dropping divisions is the lower scholarship limit of 63 for FCS (85 for FBS). That’s 26% savings, but that only amounts to a maximum of $600k savings (26% savings x 85 FBS Scholarships x $30k out of state tuition). That doesn’t come close to balancing the budget, plus this does not account for revenue losses from being in a lower division.
Remember, Football is still, by far, UH’s most profitable sport, even in its current state. The problem UH has is that football is not profiting enough to pay for all the other non-revenue sports or sports that have revenue but operate in the red (Baseball, Softball, W. Basketball for example).
UH needs to cut costs (sports), but that’s a complicated matter because of Title IX requirements and sports required by conference affiliation. Non-revenue sports such as Golf, Soccer, Tennis and Track can’t be cut because of Big West Conference requirements. Sports at risk of being cut would be non-Big West sports such as Mens Volleyball, sailing, swimming & diving.
It’s complicated, but ultimately UH Football isn’t going anywhere unless UH (or the legislature) pulls the plug on UH Athletics all together.

45. Tedford is interesting… but did he apply?
Dare I say… another “QB Guru”. BUT, he has quality HC experience, unlike the last guy with no HC experience.
The plus side is that he helped rebuild Cal from it’s worst season ever in 2001 to a pretty solid program with some really good players going to the NFL while he was there. Cal is not a well run athletics program with lots of issues, so winning there means you’re doing something right.
CFL salaries aren’t big (I saw that a typical team spends around $2M total for coaching staffs & front office staff), but CFL and NCAA FB are different, so there could be some appeal for Tedford to return to college coaching.
The knocks I see are that he has been trending down his last 3 years at Cal, and going 7-11 + playoff loss at BC Lions. In between he’s had some health issues that cut his only NFL job short (portion of 2014 TB Buccaneers as OC).
Pluses and minus, but he’d probably be as good of an experienced head coach you could get for the money UH is going to pay.
Better than JJ? It’s pretty debatable from an objective viewpoint, but JJ has the fan memories on his side.
It doesn’t matter being in this conference is like being bullied into stay in a abusive relationship.
No other team but Hawaii pays its opponents to come its like paying to be beat up.
We need to reevaluate our situation being in this conference is draining our program life support

The problem I see with JJ is that I don’t know if he’s committed for the long run. If things go south for 2 years, would runaway and retire? He’s not getting paid enough to stick it out… heck, he walked away from a juicy $2M+ job once everything went sour.
I do see value in JJ in the short term, but as I’ve said before, Matlin needs to have a replacement plan ready he picks JJ as the coach.
50… The problem is no conference wants UH and the hassle of transpacific travel for all sports. That’s why UH is being made to pay for travel subsidies.
UH needs a conference association far more than any conference needs UH in it.
Football scheduling (and all other sport scheduling) becomes a nightmare as an independent. UH already has a hard enough time as it is scheduling their 5 non-conference slots with FBS opponents, can you imagine trying to schedule 12 or 13 games, and keeping in mind most logistical opponents are locked up in conference play from late Sept thru November.
Can you imagine baseball or softball trying to fill 50+ game schedules as an independent?

well, considering that he coached UH for 9 years before leaving, and coached at SMU for 6 whole seasons before leaving during the 7th, I think this is doubtful.

people think that it’s obsolete but when pressed on it, they can’t articulate why in any kind of technical or meaningful sense. this is probably mainly because people who claim this have no idea what they’re talking about and don’t even have a basic functional understanding of what the run and shoot actually IS (aside from cosmetic things like shotgun, single back, four wide receivers), but will pretend that they do.

if you feel that SMU went 5-7 primarily because of schematic reasons (i.e. the offense itself was to blame because the defense was doing x,y, and z, and shutting down the run and shoot on a technical level, therefore the run and shoot is ‘outdated’) rather than all the other factors that could’ve led to a 5-7 season, i’d love to hear why.
Nice interview clip on KITV news with RK and Ben Clarke. Wow, he never missed a start in his 4 years here. Great love for the people of Hawaii and has no regrets despite having only 10 wins in his 4 years. Hope he and the team get #11 Saturday.
#57 ot808, only problem I have with JJ is that he knew he was leaving before the Sugar Bowl against Georgia. It showed, he checked out mentally, you could see it in his eyes and body language. More so it was like he did not give a darn with his play calling. It’s like he let down his team, his coaches and us fans.

usually when we talk about coaches “killing the program,” it’s in the context of the coach being extremely unsuccessful and running the program into the ground and leaving it in much worse condition than when he got hired.
for example: von appen “killed the program.” norm chow DEFINITELY “killed the program.”
saying that june jones killed the program because he took a better job offer at another school and the coaches who were hired after him ranged from mediocre (mcmackin) to extremely terrible (norm chow) makes no sense.
That’s like saying bob wagner killed the UH football program at the time because after he got fired, von appen drove the program off a cliff. or it’s like saying riley wallace killed UH basketball because after he retired, UH basketball has been pretty terrible until now.
JJ’s name being mentioned on the blog has created more comments than any other coach who has applied. Meaning he can stir interest.
Blaming JJ for killing the program is ludicrous. The reason why is that there were a lot of people taking advantage of freebies getting and being at the Sugar Bowl. No one saying let’s use the extra cash to help the football program to get it to greater heights. Not even the chancellor and the president coming forth and saying we are overriding the AD and extending a contract to JJ.
No leader came forth with a plan to take UH to the next level. No coach or administrator had any inkling on how to take advantage of getting to a higher level. A ship that had lost a captain due to the admiral screwing up. He got UH to one of the top bowls on a PT boat. Not having a destroyer or aircraft carrier as a vehicle.
Now over the last 8 years UH a ship without a rudder, has crashed upon the rocks. A life boat with a person is on who can rebuild this ship and have it sail with a direction and purpose in mind. This man can get it started again with a PT boat, then a destroyer and finally an aircraft carrier provided the president will be 100% supportive of building a high caliber program.
Unless the national pundits spoke to Matlin, they don’t know who’s really in the running for the job.

Not an Expert I like your analogy about the PT boat. I am in agreement that the statement that JJ killed the program is ludicrous and misinformed. This is not the time to move slowly in hiring a new coach. Matlin needs to get his butt moving and stop this waiting game and hire JJ pronto.

I don’t know if JJ will get the job again, but I did catch passes from him at Cooke Field in the early 70s when I was living at Varsity Circle. Also there to catch passes was JJ’s friend Mel DeLaura. Ah, memories!!!
1) JJ is available now and can hit the ground running.
2) Probably already have a majority of his staff committed if hired.
3) ESPN will run the story and keep tabs on him and UH. Free exposure that will
help recruiting. He has probably spoken with enough Hawaii high players
that may give UH a better chance of landing some blue chippers.
4) Will make it fun to watch football again with a quick striking offense.
5) Fund raising and with his foundation that he could use to help bring in more
money for the program.
6) His NFL contacts maybe not as many as before but enough to help his players
get an audition if they do not get drafted.
7) Odds with him is greater for a turnaround than a coach with no head coach
experience. Other head coaches will not understand the local culture as JJ
will and will not have that as a problem.
8) He may do it at a bargain price to help his assistant coaches get paid more.
9) He will not use this as another stepping stone but part of his plan is to have a
succession plan by grooming one of his assistant for the job when he is ready
to step down.
10) My guess is his payoff would be the greater satisfaction in helping bring back
the fortune of UH football, thereafter having that feeling of accomplishment
& Aloha extended to him as he lives the remainder of his life in Hawaii.
Unless Matlin is leaking information I would take the rumors with a grain of salt.

My gut feeling is Matlin is looking for a young up and comer. If he were leaning towards JJ he would’ve closed the posting date already rather than to keep extenting it. JJ has the most public support judging by comments here, comments to written articles and comments on sports shows. Benjy had the same public support but Matlin went with a relatively unknown to the general public. Ganot’s hiring received a lukewarm reaction but is now picking up some steam giving his initial success.
I trust Matlin is taking the short and long term views of who is going to work out best for the program. He knows he’s staking his job on whoever he picks. I’ll support whoever he picks.
Cocobean, you have it right. You support the program, not the personality. True, as history has shown, mistakes were made, but true fans support the program, support change when made and support the decision, even when it is not your personal choice.

Our conference rivals destroy teams that run the run and shoot offense yes JJ had success in past because no one expected it to be so effective.
But now teams will be ready.
and for JJ to insert his new play techniques will be a few years for players to adapt to it and execute it to the point where they use it in game time situations.

The QB that come down once in awhile to throw in the afternoon was Elroy Chong. Did not have the pleasure of seeing JJ out there. Stringert was very helpful with weightlifting tips and was able to run sprints with them.

BTW. I’m a firm believer good head coaches are born rather than made. They have the innate quality of true leadership. They have the ability to organize everyone below them to perform the task they’re suppose to do whether it’s a player, coach or support staffer. They put people in positions to succeed and hold them accountable if they are not. They recognize a person’s potential and find ways to develop it.
They show this ability at an early stage in their careers. When I think of the better active coaches college or pro they all seem to have gotten their first HC gig in their 30s to early 40s. Tomey and JJ fit this profile. Their personalities and styles are all different but they have the ability to lead, to give direction to others.
53… I hear people say this a lot, however the schools you mention receive a much higher proportion of university funding to keep their athletics running than UH gives to athletics. There have been a few articles about this fairly recently.
Also saying UH would save money by cutting football is a completely false statement.
UH football is scheduled to PROFIT around $2 million in 2015. Cutting $2 million profit just added $2 million to the deficit.
Even if it’s not performing like it used to, you don’t cut the one program that makes the most money.
79… UH probably can’t afford Jasper. Plus converting to an option offense will take multiple recruiting classes to get the right offensive personnel to run it effectively. It might be an option long term, but I don’t think there’s much appetite within UH leadership for a major change in offensive style that requiresG a major roster overhaul. I think they would prefer a coach that can install the bulk of his offense right away with the returning players.
Unfortunately UH isn’t going to be paying enough salary to attract the “perfect hire”. Everybody that’s realistically available is either unproven as a HC or has several flaws that need to be worked around. Given that the last two HCs were 1st time HC and both showed an inability to effectively manage the numerous non-coaching responsibilities a HC has to do. I think that could lower the odds for Miano and Rolovich or any other 1st time HC applicant.
By “perfect hire” I meant a guy that at least 75% of fans will be happy with when they make the announcement.

Former UH Athlete — interesting comment about making 75% of the fans happy. I wonder how many of the happy 75% fans are going to buy season tickets or buy individual game tickets and support AKA and Na Koa if they are not now?
A lot of people are favoring this candidate or that… but if they should get their way, how many of them will be putting their money down if they are not doing so now?…I mean buying tickets, not PPV. Is this number significant enough to stop the bleeding? I guess we won’t know until season ticket renewal time comes again.

The first three schools that came to my mind were: Cal-State Fullerton, Long Beach State, and Pacific, because they were the last three FBS(then Division I-A) schools to drop football.
(I think Alabama-Birmingham reconsidered and is coming back next season.)

Hope the friends families and fans turn out for the last one-it would truly be beneficial to the program players and community. Have not missed. A game and attended 4 mainland games. This past Saturday I told my wife I might turn in early and almost did at Midnight-my pride love of the program and thought of the bright future would not let me so I finished at about 130. After watching the video of Lance Williams I thought to myself how can you not support a guy like this-I am sure he is not the only one who does things like this. Allstate Insurance has a Good Hands Community Service Award that recognizes players who give back while still enrolled I do not recall ever seeing a UH candidate-hopefully in the future we will nominate one-Mr Williams get my good handshake award for his efforts!

Ok a little football. ULM will touch down sometime today and spend Thursday and Friday before the game. This is not there last game they have one more for a total of 13. From the injury report they are beat up more than the Warriors and looks as if a Grad QB who is number 4 on the chart will get the start. For the finale I can only hope the Warriors come out with ears pinned back to take the last one and get Paul Harris about 150 plus. Reading Reardon’ s article this morning and then looking at ST’ s regarding Naeole, it may be worth Matlin’ s while to interview, if interested, Naeole, in spite of his not making the full requirements desired. What does he (Matlin) have to lose?
Naeole appears to have command, is detail oriented, demands discipline and understands the game. He may not have the coaching “name recognition” like other favorites posted here, but he may be a sleeper. Why not find out?
I read somewhere (cannot remember) that Naeole let Tom Mason go. No more DC? Anybody else read or hear that?
This is pure speculation as I do not know Coach Naeole.
The more I think about it, the more I am interested in giving him a shot. I believe that he and his coaches may have a hard time ‘recruiting as I don’t believe his philosophy would paint any rosy picture. He’d tell the recruit why he wants him and why the UH, but I believe that he’d also let the recruit that there are never guarantees on his team for positions. If you don’t earn it you don’t play. Earning it come with the expected responsibility he would demand of each in the classroom, at practice, in training, in the community and on the field. Not take personal responsibility in any of these, you don’t get a chance to play.
In today’s world of somewhat pampered sometimes self anointed stars who believe teams need them more than the responsibility of being a part of a team, that may not fly with recruit or family. But at the end of the day, what he would get would be commitment to the team. Sounds like how Boise State got started on their path to success.
Seems like Coach Naeole has this philosophy. Old school? Maybe not for everyone, but a nice way to build a strong foundation; again referencing Boise State and the success they have enjoyed.

As I recall, Dino Babers applied and was beat out by Chow. JJ applied and was beat out by Von Appen. I guess what I’m saying is UH can’t spot early talent if it slapped them upside the head.

Good points! Different regime every time, Donovan with Chow and Hugh with Von Appen. Different definitely doesn’t mean better. Hopefully Matlin can break that curse.
In other words Babers was beat out by Koetter as well.
Matlin would do himself good to name the new HC the day after the last game.
Recruiting, getting a new staff and getting the returning players on the same page and look to the future are all keys to hitting the ground running.
Let’s see if Matlin can make the right decision.
