It takes two

I’ve made many bad decisions — choosing Beta over VHS, singing at karaoke nights, eating that funny-smelling burrito before the UNLV game — so, sure, maybe a little advice here and there would be helpful. (By the way, the key is “helpful” so stop with the private messages that Beau Reilly should start at quarterback. I like Beau Reilly, he’s a good guy and quarterback, but I don’t make QB decisions.)

But I digress.

Anyhoo, yesterday UH announced an “advisory panel” was formed to assist in the search for the next head football coach. The final decision rests with David Matlin.

There are a few things wrong with this. Why announce a panel? The decision rests solely with Matlin, regardless of the panel’s findings or suggestions. Matlin is a sharp guy, and he knows all the challenges of the position, mostly because everyone involved — coaches, booster-club officials, sponsors, reporters, fans — have told him every day about what the program needs.

But mostly a panel is unnecessary because Matlin needs only assistance from two people — Paula Nishimoto and Jeannie Lee.

Nishimoto, the athletic department’s human resource specialist, is thorough and relentless in vetting.

Lee, who is Matlin’s executive assistant, is smart, knowledgable about the department’s culture and processes, and tough. If there are questions or suggestions, as long as they’re not words cut out from magazine headlines to form sentences, she’ll forward them to Matlin.

Sometimes less is more.

Here is the list of 21 Seniors from the Hawaii roster. I think 8 or 9 of them are in the current 1’s and 2’s rotation. And only 1 is a WR, 1 QB that lost his starting job. Huge losses with 4 LB that were in the 1’s and 2’s rotation. Lose 2 OL that were in the 1’s and 2’s. Losing 4 year starters Nequan Phillips and Marrel Jackson in the secondary is going to leave some big shoes and game experience to fill. I don’t see any D lineman graduating this year.

But looking at the next years potential roster just based off of returning players not including recruits, transfers or unexpected medical/hardship redshirts or greyshirts. Hawaii returns a lot of players on the depth chart with live game reps next season. I hope the WR’s Corps which is only losing 1 WR with game reps can figure out how to catch a pass.

I bet June Jones or Dino Babers could work some magic with a deep young depth chart that has valuable live game reps.

Am I mistaking or wasn’t Ikaika Woolsey recruited by the previous catching staff to be a QB for the run-n-shoot offense?

The Warriors are losing five players regarded as starters — Ben Clarke, Julian Gener, Lance Williams, Ne’Quan Phillips and Marrell Jackson.
Leo Kolomatangi can play LT (as well as four of the guys redshirting).
Gener’s toughness and leadership will be difficult to replace. But Solomon Matautia can step into the rotation.
Lance Williams will be replaced by Jeremy Castro, who has missed the past several game because of a stinger.
Dany Mulanga already has stepped in for Jackson, who has missed several games with a variety of ailments. Plus, Trayvon Henderson returns.
Jalen Rogers, Jamal Mayo and Dejaun Butler can play opposite corner Nick Nelson.

Panel/schmanel-it has to be a good fit for the program, community and University. So I do not care if people share their thoughts but Matlin has the call. There has been a lot of doom and gloom tossed around so here are a few facts. Since 1970, considered to be the beginning of the so called modern era of Warrior Football there have been 26 winning seasons 17 losing seasons and two were even. Of the losing seasons-9 have been under 3 coaches—over 50% of the total losing seasons. GM had just one winning season-FVA- 3 losing seasons, NC 4 losing seasons. Because of the recent downturn we often forget who we are and where we have been. The winning percentage and legacy of the program along with the average attendance over that period of time would be the envy of dozens of programs with the exception of the very elite-we may be down but we are proud strong and determined to get back on our feet so to speak and claim what is rightfully ours and that would be a conference title in the MWC. Don’t let any of weaklings deter you from being a staunch fan and supporter-GO WARRIORS!!!!

This is one of the rare situations I am not in total agreement with our beloved ST. The nature of these hires is not as straightforward as it appears, and while it certainly does add another level of bureaucratic machinations to the process, it is needed.

The HC job encumbers so many aspects that are outside the mere Xs and Os of the grames, e.g. development/foundation work, alums, academics, compliance, logistics, purchase and acquisitions, etc…. Thus, while it the ADs, decision alone to make (this I am in agreement), these added eyes and ears, assist in many of the more nuanced components that might be missed. Further, the delegation of responsibilities, to thoroughly uncover both the personal and professional life of each candidate can be daunting….

But, just my lousy 2 cents……

  6. tom November 17, 2015 7:27 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

Always can blame the Advisory Panel if things go south.

  7. Steve P November 17, 2015 7:31 am

I have a notion this advisory thing was foisted upon our AD as more of a watch dog element. I could be wrong, but that’s how UH has done business in the past…nobody has helluva lot of trust in anyone these days as a consequence of the past stupid situations .

  8. Shoko November 17, 2015 7:46 am

I dunno but if the pool of candidates is large, the more people involved the quicker the vetting process of each prospective head coach. Of course, the people who are involved should also be competent, which I’m sure they are, in evaluating and acutely aware of the budget limitations in choosing the most qualified candidate.

Yet, something tells me that a lot of folks are going to be disappointed (can’t please everyone!) when an announcement is made. Whoever that person may be I’ll support. then reevaluate when his contract comes up for an extension.

  9. Arcumfortis November 17, 2015 7:47 am

In my professional life I have the opportunity to be in a position to oversee the work of other professionals, including commenting on the appropriateness of their plans and interventions. What I have noticed is that the further away from the front line one gets the easier it seems to be smart and know exactly what to do. But I think this is an illusion.

Being on the front lines and making decisions is hard. So it is fun for all of us to think we know which coach to hire, what type of offense is best, what sort of advisory committee is best, how to fix Aloha Stadium, etc etc. And of course there are times when there is some truth to our wizened opinions. But for the most part I think it is best to keep in mind that we are having and amusing ourselves with our opinions.

  10. Annoddah Dave November 17, 2015 7:57 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:
I thought you might have included Carl Clapp as he has been in the Athletic Department for quite awhile and is a former AD. Amanda Peterson is a good choice as the academic requirements are key to APR and Grad rate. The HR person is one where all they do is vet the application…as far as what it takes to coach a football team that is something that is normally in any Personnel and Industrial Relations courses. Hugh Yoshida as some have posted earlier is noted for the firing of Bob Wagner for no good reason other than not wanting to give him a chance to turn things around, hiring of Von Appen (without a committee of any sort, and dismissing Norm Chow who had expressed interest when he was much younger), then hiring of June Jones but used a search committee after he got flack about the Von Appen hire. I believe he might have been involved in the hiring of his successor Herman Fraizer.

  11. Casual Observer November 17, 2015 7:59 am

This year’s team was supposed to be the best team in Chow’s era. Yet, judging by scores and closeness of play (or number of blowouts), it was a severely underperforming team despite the promising Colorado win. And despite the fan concern about “bare shelves”, there are many returning underclassmen who are quality players or starters that offer a solid foundation for a competitive future. As Laura Beeman’s (UH Wahine BB) example is testimony, the coaching staff was part of the problem and hopefully a new staff and HC will achieve more victories, as she did, with most of the same players. June Jones’ 1999 season is another example. The major difference was the coaching staff.

ST I think if DM is gonna having panel, the one announced is good – all have knowledge of UH football n school academics. Not a bunch of self promoting power brokers. My choices are: 1) JJ 2) Babers 3) Rolo 4) Miano 5) Surprise candidate. We have been and will always be a proud UH football state.

  14. Balko November 17, 2015 8:14 am

It would be interesting if the football players demanded a final say in the hiring process since they create all the wealth for the department.

If they threaten to boycott the last two games unless they are given a contractually binding right of refusal on who gets hired as the next head coach, they could shift the power in the department to those who actually have to endure the consequences of the head coach hiring process.

It would also be a huge PR boost to the program that could make UH football a national story going forward.

Hope the players take note of their power in this situation.

  15. Shoko November 17, 2015 8:20 am

Wondering if Hawaii can really afford to welcome Syrian refugees in the midst of what is an already growing Hawaii homeless problem given most of these Syrian refugees are coming from impoverished areas and would struggle to adjust to the high cost of living.

  16. (Jesse)James November 17, 2015 8:37 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos…

    Whew…it’s been a while.

Anyway, as long as Matlin is the sole person making the final decision to send to the Chancellor, I’m ok with a strictly advisory committee.

Hey ST, can’t we make Reilly the QB????

    Just kidding.

  17. Former UH Athlete November 17, 2015 8:49 am

Why would Babers take the UH job when he’s already a HC at a mid-major program?

Babers is scheduled to make $413k base salary + he’s on schedule to receive heavy performance bonuses this season that will earn more than UH can offer. Normally, a MAC to MWC would be considered a lateral move for a HC. The only time this happens if a HC doesn’t like or fit in with the community (ala Gary Anderson at Wisconsin), or if the destination school offers a significant pay increase.

As of now, UH would be a major downgrade of a job and likely a downgrade in pay, and much higher cost of living. Not to mention Babers is going to be a hot name to fill a Power 5 job vacancy, which is millions of dollars.

UH’s chance to get Babers was 4 years ago after the 2011 season.

UH can no longer afford Babers. End of Story

  19. Former UH Athlete November 17, 2015 8:59 am

14… Ige is just another run of the mill politician grabbing for headlines in an otherwise do-nothing term. Saying Hawai’i will accept Syrian refugees is just plain stupid for 2 reasons:

    1. Ige knows that there’s a massive homeless problem, plus he’s the leader of a “Homeless Taskforce”. Advertising to take in people who probably can’t afford housing is moronic.

    2. Governors don’t have the power to deny refugees into any state. Once they’re in the US, they are in. There’s no passport required to go from state to state.

    Make it 3 stupid reasons:
    3. Inviting a potential threat to Hawai’i’s economic lifeline (tourism) is beyond moronic.

  20. cocobean November 17, 2015 9:04 am

I think two months from now the narrative for this season will be the team didn’t have enough depth to handle the schedule Ben Jay dealt them. The team now bares no resemblance to the team that played Colorado both physically and mentally. I wonder how many players feel betrayed by the athletic department for putting them in harms way to balance the budget with two big payout suicide games, I wonder how many feel betrayed by the department for making their father figure the fall guy for their record. And lastly I wonder how players feel betrayed by their fans for being critical of their effort and not showing up and giving them a home field advantage when they needed it the most.

  21. man eating apple November 17, 2015 9:05 am

Tsai is right, bureaucracy/administrative explosion is going too far. Read this, if you don’t worry about administrators:
    http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/magazine/septemberoctober_2011/features/administrators_ate_my_tuition031641.php?page=all

This is where all your UH fees are going. Not to football coaches, not to professors; but to administrators. A generation ago, we did fine without administrators. Now administrators exist to justify their existence. Look at them weaseling into the football coach hiring.

The people who will be advising Matlin, 1) don’t have much football knowledge themselves, and 2) are supposed to be administrators for other areas already. What are they helping Matlin with? Matlin is supposed to hire sports coaches.
Lori Ideta, Roxie Shabazz, Mike Trapasso???

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

    Good discussions today.

Just puzzled why admissions people need to be on board. Anyone attending the university has to qualify academically any ways.
We should have and do have academic counselors/tutors/monitors on board, don’t we?
I’m just not convinced we need all those people on the panel/board.

Some questions to the prospective coach…
Do you know the kind of facilities we have for our athletes?
Will you be able to sell your program to recruits?
Anyhoo, seems to me qualifications should be football related. imho

I like ST’s approach. Easier to work with a small group if you have to.
Yes, Carl Clapp should be included if not for anything else but to let the new hire about all the “pot holes” he’ll encounter along the way.

    IMUA WARRIORS!

  29. Old Diver November 17, 2015 9:25 am

In high school Woosley was playing in a traditional offense not a R&S offense. Gotta remember they were bringing in two to three quarterbacks a year which meant Woosley was not the anointed one.

  31. Whats up November 17, 2015 9:31 am

I was rematching the Leahy & Leahy show with June Jones and he brings up a good point. June Jones said that during his time as head coach at Hawaii. When University of Hawaii Football was winning games, it created excitement, interest and other phenomenon’s occur because of National TV exposure that University of Hawaii wouldn’t get otherwise from ESPN, CBS, FOX, NBC, ABC, CNN SI, Yahoo sports and others. And during that time:

University of Hawaii student enrollment increased.
    Ticket sales increased.
UH got recruits in Football, Basketball, Softball, etc; that it would not otherwise land.
Businesses in Hawaii got increase revenue.
    Donations to UH increased.

So hiring the next Football Head Coach that can bring Hawaii back to winning could generate financial income for the University of Hawaii and for the Businesses in Hawaii. But most important uplift the Hawaii’s Football team and the State of Hawaii pride!

  32. NorthShoreFan November 17, 2015 9:42 am

True dat. When JJ brought his program to Hawaii he did create a winning atmosphere. How much of that rubbed off on basketball, softball or baseball is hard to pin point. One thing for sure, he gave the program positive national exposure.
    Then….

Which football coach has the longest tenure?

  33. cocobean November 17, 2015 9:55 am

Took a nap from 700P till 1030P to stay up and watch the BB game. Free throw shooting aside I was impressed with the team and their effort. My thoughts on the team so far.

    1. Ganot is a good coach. He’s not the type to get in a players face like Arnold or Riley, he’s not a cheerleader type like Benjy or an towel waving Nash. He’s a teacher of the game. The team is playing a lot smarter with less mental errors, he’s raised the basketball IQ of the team.

    2. Depth may become an issue. Some of the starters may have to play iron man minutes which at some point might catch up with them.

    3. Thomas and Fleming are still trying to find their niche in the half court. In the offense Thomas is catching the ball out further than he’s used to and seems a little passive in looking for a shot whether it’s a jumper or a drive in. Fleming is still adjusting his free flowing game into the structure of the offense. He’s toned down his offense quite a bit to fit in but still doesn’t look sure when he should go for it or just keep moving the ball around.

    4. The bandwagon may start rolling if the team continues to improve. Get your tickets now for the best available seats.

  34. Inyoface November 17, 2015 10:06 am

JJ or Dino Barbers are the only 2 coaches I can think of that will leave other teams like UCLA with an intimidating impression, especially to their DC.

  35. Former UH Athlete November 17, 2015 10:07 am

I echo what Bobby Curran said this morning…

David Matlin’s choice for next football coach could be critical for UH Athletics survival. Curran mentioned that the Athletics Department is on track for a $5 million deficit this fiscal year.

In my opinion, if Matlin can’t stop the financial bleeding soon, it’s just a matter of time until the enough legislatures get fed up and pull the plug on UH Athletics funding via UH budget bill killing UH Athletic funding.

In my opinion, Matlin needs to start cutting a few non-revenue programs to cut some expenses. Women’s VB and Men’s BB make some profit, but even on good years, it’s not a significant bump in profits. The only vehicles UH has are improving the numbers is FB revenue and cutting costs.

  36. letsgowarriors November 17, 2015 10:13 am

you cant just cut non-revenue programs and remain D1 or in compliance w Title IX

  37. FearGod November 17, 2015 10:15 am

  39. Maddog50 November 17, 2015 10:19 am

Going back to the Barry Alvarez conversation Wisconsin was a big doormat. They took a chance on a position coach who really made his bones recruiting at ND. The players they get at least on Offense have been the result of huge offensive linemen who are typically 2 to 3 star guys. Most of them from the state. From there they get higher quality RBs decent QBs and receivers. The offense is predicated on OL and defense. Since he arrived they have been highly competitive or even elite. While all the conversation is on offense or so it seems I think the next guys certainly has to put a greater emphasis on the defensive needs. You of course out score the opponent but stopping them goes a long way. Personally I do not think we are so far away from at least being in the upper tier of this conference. Except for the dismal efforts over the last few weeks if you look at the scores of the games over the last couple of years-it really would have been a few players shy of wins instead of losses. Even this year SDSU, NEV, NM, UNLV. A few players on both side changes the outcome in my opinion. I think. SJSU will look somewhat similar. The aforementioned games were gift wrapped and delivered to these guys-I no longer feel in a generous mood and want payback ASAP. As it is often said revenge is sweet! Go Warriors!

  40. FearGod November 17, 2015 10:20 am

  41. graham November 17, 2015 10:21 am

I would like a June Jones support to state their case why he should be coach. Whoever supports him clearly didnt see what happened at SMU. And the fact that he left UH high and dry after the Sugar Bowl sould elimate him as a candidate.

  42. Shoko November 17, 2015 10:21 am

Raise student activity fees. If a winning football program increases enrollment (Flutie Effect) then raising the athletic fee is a good idea unless, of course, you’re a student who doesn’t care about college athletics or a parent of a student that is attending UH.

  43. graham November 17, 2015 10:21 am

Sitake and Ulbrich are the best candidates. Aranda would be awesome as well

  44. Former UH Athlete November 17, 2015 10:25 am

Changing gears… I’m excited for the MBB team this season.

The obvious concerns are depth in the front court and shooting.

What’s going to be interesting to see how Ganot and the team manage the transition of offensive styles. Ganot’s offensive philosophy is much more structured system with a lot of perimeter shooting and Gib’s was more about finding matchups and relying on a roster filled with the best athletes he could get.

Unfortunately, UH’s best shooters are gone (Nevels graduated and NWC turned pro/academic issues), leaving basically no pure shooters on the roster. It’s encouraging to see Sai Tummala knocking down some shots.

The good news is that this squad is very athletic and tenacious defensively in the backcourt. I do see improvements in decision making and fewer mental mistakes, which goes in line with the personality of the coach.

Hopefully the improved discipline will partially offset UH’s deficiency from the FT line.

All in all, UH MBB is going to continue to improve. As bad as Gib’s tenure ended, he deserves credit for rebuilding the program back to being fun to watch again. Hopefully, Ganot is the guy that can take UH to the next level… which is back to the NCAA tournament.

  45. FearGod November 17, 2015 10:33 am

No. 40–And the fact that he left UH high and dry after the Sugar Bowl sould elimate him as a candidate.
“When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘At home even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger! I will go home to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired servant.”‘
“So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.*’
“But his father said to the servants, ‘Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet. And kill the calf we have been fattening. We must celebrate with a feast, for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.’ So the party began. I SAY, LET’S GET THIS PARTY STARTED

That’s the dialogue my cousin and I was having after the Coastal Carolina game.

    Athleticism versus basketball I.Q.

The talk was mostly centered around Quincy Smith.

He does look like a smarter player this season.

And so far, it seems as if Issac Fleming has left his “angry young man” days behind.

  50. graham November 17, 2015 10:52 am

I doubt you guys know but SMU is 1-9 this year. Jones quit on the team last year and left Tom Mason to handle the mess he created. He also left Chad Morris with no players. Jones is a lazy recruiter and runs a out dated offense. Not to mention he was suppose to leave SMU for ASU and a deal was even agreed upon but the booster and people at ASU nixed it because they didnt want him.

Per your request June Jones coached 16 seasons 10 of which had winning records. Coached 9 Bowl games and won 6. Say what you will about his resignation which was included in these numbers. I will take Dave Matlins decision whatever that may be-but if experience matters along with a grasp of the landscape I would say he more than warrants very strong consideration. The Head Coach is only part of the puzzle, who can you keep or bring on board. I am so done with taking chances and “hoping” some guy turns it around. I can not see a person with limited experience in the business, no real coordinator experience and being out of the game being a good choice…..no more of this “there a lot more to this than I thought” nonsense. It’s a big job and needs experienced leadership. That’s my two sense for what it’s worth-

Whats up – you make to much sense, and to logical if not proven fact. Not good what you are saying. Better have a junky coach and not win games. Makes better sense for most up there at UH.

#40 You only see the surface stories coming out of SMU and you don’t know the heart of the man to make these implications. JJ was forth right in saying why he left UH for SMU and one of his reasons was financial. He made no bones about it. His tenure at SMU was made difficult because of the pressure by some of the rich donor boosters that create significant problems within their system. You don’t know enough to accuse JJ of leaving SMU high and dry. JJ is back home again. I enjoyed FearGod’s analogy to the prodical son in his sutle inference to JJ. JJ is not perfect neither are any of us but he is a proven coach. He is happy and refreshed to be in Hawaii and dearly wants the UH job. He understands all the UH and political nuances. He is an innovator and has new ideas that he wants to implement. He is a marketer as well as an experienced coach. I believe he will have the right staff to recruit Hawaii and the mainland. We don’t have the time to take a chance on unproven assistant coaches and head coaches who would be lost in Hawaii’s political and cultural climate.

  57. Don Weir November 17, 2015 11:36 am

There are possibilities in the payment/stipend for a new coach (s) & creating ‘UH Football Buzz’:
    1. offer the use of the President’s House in Manoa as a residence for the entire Head Coach’s tenure. Right now it is used for ‘functions’,
    2. align with a bank, Athl Dept. choice, to offer low interest loans for houses if coaches are from the mainland,
    3. plan with an airline (different airlines are bidding to come in to Hawaii), for flight discounts for UH team and visiting MWC teams,
    4. create a partnership with a hotel (specific hotel) to offer deep discounts for UH player’s families-former players & families, visiting team, visiting team’s supporters (probably a different hotel from where UH team is staying the night before games), heavily advertise this in visiting teams cities,
    5. develop an alumni/fan base by setting up receptions in the off season to build $$ support and ask/use former players to help out (ie.,Cassidy in Seattle, MadDog50 in Chicago, New York, LA). Offer the same deals to fans (with tickets ordered) as seen in #’s 3 & 4).

    Advertise/accentuate #’s 2-3-4 in the community.

Stop the mail outs by athletic department and booster organizations and emphasize other media for contacts: way too costly.Do we have a systemic database for UH Athletics? Do we have someone on UHAD staff that has the ability to parse the data effectively (take a look at Hawaii News Now dropping Nielsen for ratings because their data was suspect)?

UH can sponsor a ‘major campaign’ why not carry this out a a separate effort specific to UH Athletics? Statewide, Nationwide?

$100,000.00 is nothing to sneeze at but if that is what it takes to become a ‘platinum sponsor’ then we are short changing ourselves by grabbing the easy money but leaving the sustainable income on the table.

I apologize for the ramblings but I do not want to participate in the ‘who should be coach’ speculations but in how we can get the best comprehensive contract package we may propose to the candidate in order for him to accept the UH offer.

  58. Don Weir November 17, 2015 11:41 am

For those of the early 70’s era as fans of the baseball team we lost another former player and major booster in the passing of Riley Mende.
Riley was a pitcher on the team, former VP of American Savings Bank, former President of the UH Lettertwinner’s Club, awardee of the Kane Fernandez Community Service citation for UH, and a personal friend to many of us.
    RIP Riley!!

Like I always say, loyalty is a two-way street–and in college football, its a two-way street with an express lane, if you are the one holding the cards.

Like Denziel Washington says in Training Day–fool, this is CHESS it ain’t checkers. That is to say, if you win, there is loyalty, if you donʻt–aloha no. Ask Bob Wagner or Bob Nash about loyalty??! I begrudge JJ nothing…..he held up more than his side of the bargain. In fact, what people donʻt talk about is that he was willing for some of his comp to go to assistants and improvements to facilities.

This is not the days of Cal Chai, Larry Ginoza, Eddie Hamada….nope, only folks you need to be loyal to are your wife, kids and the family dog.

  61. Rodney November 17, 2015 11:57 am

  63. Makai November 17, 2015 12:20 pm

I’m sorry but the June Jones haters have some serious daddy issues. He left Hawaii and SMU. So what? Our football program has some deep wounds and Jones can apply the stitches. He’s turned around two programs and knows Hawaii’s/Manoa politics. Could he fail? Yes it’s a possibility. Hawaii need a drastic change now, not 3-5 years from now. I think Nate Ilaoa said it best. If you have a problem with your car and a mechanic does a good job fixing it. If a different problem arises would you go to the same mechanic? June fixed the von Appen mess, I think he deserves the chance to fix Chow’s disaster.

  64. 808WARRIORFAN November 17, 2015 12:20 pm

Forget Dino Babers … his name has been mentioned for the openings at Maryland & Missouri just for starters … those jobs will pay well over $1M a year

JJ left Hawaii in much better shape then it was when he came in! Stop crying about what he did at SMU. He has a proven track record and will hand over the torch to a formidable candidate when he’s ready to retire.

    19. cocobean November 17, 2015 at 9:04 am

Good synopsis, cocobean. Although the players are physically hurting (as ST finally reveals), maybe substitute “abandoned” for “betrayed”. No doubt the loss of Chow, who recruited them and cared that they graduate, was not unexpected and I’m sure the players feel responsible for that.

If their was justice in the UH football world, JJ would return, McMackin would return as Defensive Coordinator, and Chow return as QB coach and academic advisor.

BTW, when JJ took us to the Sugar Bowl, there were were no facility upgrades and the soap/toilet paper flap was that year. No Ching field, no new locker rooms, no new weight room, no $$$ and nothing new. JJ won with what we had, and with no improvements in sight, we would call for his firing in a few years if we did not get back to a BCS bowl. His leaving lit a fire here and he got a chance to orchestrate the greatest SMU comeback in history. What’s left to do in the NCAA record books? JJ does seem to get bored without challenges or history to rewrite, so I do not expect him to stay more than 4-5 years if can save UH football again. But bruddah, we need saving.

  67. turfwar November 17, 2015 12:45 pm

Of all the people who complain about JJ leaving the team and getting their feelings hurt. Pleaase. If offered the chance to make 2 mil per year with a 5 year contract doing something they love I’m betting very few if any would turn down that opportunity. Turns out he made that kind of money for about 10 years. That’s great for him. He can now live in this beautiful state very comfortably. I’m one that hopes Babers ends up being hired but if not then few would have the resume of rebuilding programs that JJ does. It’s what he does best.

  68. 808WARRIORFAN November 17, 2015 12:45 pm

Mr. Tsai can you confirm a report that former Fresno State HC was on the UH campus yesterday ???

  69. Come on, man! November 17, 2015 12:49 pm

“This is not the days of Cal Chai, Larry Ginoza, Eddie Hamada….nope, only folks you need to be loyal to are your wife, kids and the family dog.”

Yeah. funny how that works. these types of fans who are harping on the “loyalty” issue don’t seem to understand that to the coaches and the university, this is a JOB. June Jones was paid (under his market value) to provide a service and he did that well. Had June Jones pulled a Norm Chow, he would’ve been fired in a blink of an eye with all the fans turned against him just as quickly as he would’ve left for a much bigger pay day.

College football is a business and coaching is a very unstable profession. coaches are always fired or they quit. If dino babers, for whatever reason, decides he doesn’t like money and wants to take a step down in his career ladder to coach UH, you can bet your house that after three years, when an SEC or PAC-12 program comes calling, he’ll bolt.

that’s the name of the game when you’re a mid major. people need to stop whining about this and expecting coaches to stay in one place forever.

  70. Boolakanaka November 17, 2015 1:03 pm

Dino’s 3rd conference championship game in a row–writing is on the wall– eg big bank deposit slip after this season is over.

  76. Da Punchbowl Kid November 17, 2015 1:32 pm

There are few good coaches amongst the known candidates. I’d be happy with one of them.

I pray Matlin and his “comittee” choose well.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  77. Da Punchbowl Kid November 17, 2015 1:39 pm

Pardon the typos above. It should read “committee” above. And, “there are a few good candidates” I meant to say. I need to be more committed to better grammar and spelling. 🙁

  78. Stephen Tsai November 17, 2015 1:48 pm

I think we all like Dino Babers too much to let him take the UH job. There is only a small window to strike it rich. He owes it to himself and his family to continue his path to a power-conference payday.

  79. oldtimer808 November 17, 2015 1:54 pm

No graham we need someone who understands the complexities of coaching in Hawaii. We need an experienced coach to fix our problems. JJ can do this and hopefully will be successful the second time around.
Don Weir have you taken your ideas to AD Matlin? If not you should.

  80. Hodad November 17, 2015 1:54 pm

All Head Coaches hired since June Jones left did not have prior D1 HC experience. That didn’t work. Don’t do it again. Please. Sorry, Rich not now. Hire June. June hire Rich. Please.

  83. BigFan November 17, 2015 2:11 pm

FearGod, I always have questions on the interpretation of quotes such as:
“Even if that person wrongs you seven times a day and each time turns again and asks forgiveness, you must forgive.”
‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’
What about all these terrorists who could kill thousands of people? Will they find forgiveness if they repent just before they die?
Sorry for straying from the topic of Warrior football.

  84. BigFan November 17, 2015 2:15 pm

If we’re going to hire old coaches, what about Bob Wagner? Didn’t he have some of the biggest wins and great seasons in UH history? Nah, I wouldn’t want him back though.

  85. NotNasti November 17, 2015 2:24 pm

I get that Babers is on the fast track to a Power 5 conference and a big pay day. I understand ST saying we like Dino too much to bring him home (don’t come, you don’t know what you’re getting into). Well by that same logic, Hugh Yoshida should have never asked a sitting NFL head coach to turn down a millions of dollars to work for peanuts and take over a winless team that lost 18 straight games spanning two seasons, right? Everyone thought June was crazy when he announced that he was returning to Hawaii to become their next head coach. Nothing ventured, nothing gained as they say. Would it hurt anyone to even ask Babers if he wants to be a part of resurrecting his former team? None of us knows what is going on in his mind. Maybe Boola knows, but Boola is too much of a gentleman to reveal said confidential information, if any exists.

  86. obachan November 17, 2015 2:35 pm

One would think that JJ is the savior based on many of the comments submitted. Perhaps people are getting those initials mixed up with JC. Just because JJ had a successful tenure at UH in the past, it does not guarantee that the same results will be forthcoming if he is hired. That kind of logic also leads to a false fallacy that there are no other coaches in the whole nation that could possibly do a better job than JJ.
One can get a clue as to who Matlin might hire based on Ganot’s hiring. That profile would be someone who is not old with a lot of energy and focus, has character/integrity, able to motivate & develop athletic potential as well as develop and groom young men for their future off the football field.

  87. Willie November 17, 2015 2:40 pm

  89. Shoko November 17, 2015 3:14 pm

The sad reality is UH is not in a position to attract high-profile coaches to take over the football program especially when they are offering a below-average salary even by mid-major standards.

JJ is going to want bank. The question is whether UHis willing to shell out the kala for a second go-around.

  90. Trunks420 November 17, 2015 3:23 pm

Our last win was back in September 19.

Can’t believe next season is our last year in Division 1.

That or we lose Hawaii football

  91. cocobean November 17, 2015 3:28 pm

#84. June wasn’t on Yoshida’s radar until he let it be known he was interested in the Hawaii job. June was the “interim” head coach of the Chargers with no guarantee he’d be offered the head job. Hugh with the help of some behind the scene backers came up with enough money to seal the deal.

I think if Matlin really wanted Bebers he would find a way to offer up to 800k give or take a 100k. I feel Matlin has the capabilities to convince the right people that we can’t afford not to if Bebers would accept something in that salary range.

  92. cavewarrior November 17, 2015 3:30 pm

Why was their a press release for these helpers? Not news worthy for transparency sake..IMHO.

  93. Frannyk November 17, 2015 3:32 pm

    Shoko, you are right!

On top of the fact that the vetting process of these refugees would be almost impossible! The former CIA Director and former FBI Director has said that we don’t have the wherewithal to vet all these people. AND that ISIS WILL infiltrate the refugee population.

Our Governor is an IDIOT! And he’s putting our safety at risk! He took an oath to protect and defend the PEOPLE OF HAWAII from all enemies foreign and domestic. THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO DO THAT!

  94. SteveM November 17, 2015 3:33 pm

    RE: #84
NotNasti — I think the difference in this case is that JJ was a head coach or interim for the Houston Oilers, Atlanta Falcons, and San Diego Chargers. He already made big buck$ for several years and was offered million$ to stay at San Diego before he came to Hawaii. He had his reasons then, and I assume he has his now…maybe it’s not so much about the money nowadays…time to work on legacy… or another NCAA record.

  95. z November 17, 2015 3:47 pm

    See ST gets it.

  96. SteveM November 17, 2015 3:50 pm

    RE: my #94
I was wrong about JJ being a head coach at Houston. He was QB coach and met Head Coach Jerry Glanville there. 3 years head coach at Atlanta before San Diego.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_Jones

    Excerpt from Wikipedia:

On December 24, 2006, Jones passed Dick Tomey to become the winningest head coach in Hawaii football history (against an all-college schedule) with a 41–24 victory over Arizona State in the 2006 Hawaii Bowl.

Frustrated with what he viewed as a lack of support from the University, Jones opted to leave Hawaii at the end of the 2007 season. After initial reports had him interviewing at SMU, Hawaii officials had offers to raise his salary from $800,000 a year to $1.7 million a year and offered a commitment to improve its facilities; in addition there was an outpouring of support from Hawaii fans, including Gov. Linda Lingle. However, Jones contacted Hawaii on January 7, 2008 and let them know he had decided to accept an offer from SMU. Jones said the work that needed to be done to improve the football facilities and the campus in general would never get done with him still there. He said after all of the broken promises, leaving was the only way to send a message. Jones went 76–41 at Hawaii, including 4–2 in bowls. His teams finished first in the WAC twice and second two other times.

  97. z November 17, 2015 3:50 pm

Thought I was only going to watch the beginning of last nights basketball game. I couldn’t stop watching. I had to see it to the end. I hope that UH football will be like that one day.

  98. cocobean November 17, 2015 4:09 pm

Shoko. Jones will give Hawaii a hometown discount. It’s not like he has a lot of coaching options open to him. In my opinion he wants the challenge of rebuilding the program and the satisfaction success would bring. I think he enjoyed being one of the most “popular” public figure here. Being recognized and patted on the back where ever he went about the Islands. I wish I hadn’t worn out my June Junes for Governor t-shirt especially if there’s a chance he might get the job and succeed.

  99. z November 17, 2015 4:14 pm

I just want whoever the next coach is to succeed. I would even accept grumpy.

Biblical quotes and their interpretations are interesting to many of us. But this is a football blog and that’s why I come here. It’s getting to feel a little bit like someone ringing my doorbell and offering me pamphlets. Although I respect these folks I would really prefer that they not intrude upon my life in this way. I’m feeling a little the same here.

  101. Frannyk November 17, 2015 4:48 pm

    Arcumfortis.

You have a choice to not read those posts. Just because YOU don’t like those Biblical quotes, doesn’t mean all of us don’t like them.

If you know they’re a Biblical quote when you start to read them, just go on to the next one! Maybe that’s just what some of us would need right now.

  102. Sione November 17, 2015 4:49 pm

  103. cocobean November 17, 2015 4:59 pm

ST. Everyone on the committee makes some sense to me. He has people who can provide points of views from their little domain within the University – Athletic dept, faculty, admissions, student interest overseer, training, H R, vetting. Trapasso can provide insight into the everyday issues coaches have with doing their jobs, Hugh can be a sounding board from someone who’s been there and done that.

Some members will be actively involved in the vetting process while others are there as a proactive move. Proactive in the sense of having answers to questions he feels an applicant may ask which may run for entry requirements, requirements to remain eligible, student life, training programs. Matlin seems to be covering all his bases and doesn’t want to be caught off guard and not have answers at his fingertips.

No.82 Jesus said, “There was a certain rich man who was splendidly clothed in purple and fine linen and who lived each day in luxury. At his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus who was covered with sores. As Lazarus lay there longing for scraps from the rich man’s table, the dogs would come and lick his open sores.
“Finally, the poor man died and was carried by the angels to be with Abraham.* The rich man also died and was buried, and his soul went to the place of the dead.* There, in torment, he saw Abraham in the far distance with Lazarus at his side.
“The rich man shouted, ‘Father Abraham, have some pity! Send Lazarus over here to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. I am in anguish in these flames.’
“But Abraham said to him, ‘Son, remember that during your lifetime you had everything you wanted, and Lazarus had nothing. So now he is here being comforted, and you are in anguish. And besides, there is a great chasm separating us. No one can cross over to you from here, and no one can cross over to us from there.’
“Then the rich man said, ‘Please, Father Abraham, at least send him to my father’s home. For I have five brothers, and I want him to warn them so they don’t end up in this place of torment.’
“But Abraham said, ‘Moses and the prophets have warned them. Your brothers can read what they wrote.’
“The rich man replied, ‘No, Father Abraham! But if someone is sent to them from the dead, then they will repent of their sins and turn to God.’
“But Abraham said, ‘If they won’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they won’t listen even if someone rises from the dead.'”

aloha everyone !! still say if anybody should be on a panel it should be MR.Stephen Tsai who know UH football team inside out.

next been waiting 2 years to see Beau Reilly in a game !! with the season the way it is it’s his time know !!!

and sorry ST if we driving you nut about asking why no Reilly !!

  109. Bryson November 17, 2015 6:51 pm

I will state the reasons why I support JJ as the next HC and believe me a few months ago things would’ve been different.

1.Winning Right away,He’s proven he can do it he has done it twice already

2.He knows and understand Polynesian heritage and culture which would help reestablish that recruiting pipeline to Samoa

3.SMU plain and simple got spoiled and upset when he interviewed for ASAP which possible lead to distractions outside of coaching

4.this team has the talent to win in the right system and I thing that system would be the R-n-S

5.Those local kids who were 6,7,8 yrs old when Hawaii was winning are now senior or will be in the next few years that could help immensely in recruiting locally

    6. $$$ I believe we can get JJ for a reasonable price and with rebranding and going back to the Warrior name I believe merchandising and marketing would help create an even bigger revenue stream

  110. Derek November 17, 2015 6:52 pm

Well, Wittek, Ewaliko, and Torres out for the season due to injuries. Reilly, be ready!!! Who’s the emergency QB if Woolsey and Reilly get hurt? Does Zwahlen burn his redshirt year. You wonder if Bailey or even Naeole is thinking that far ahead. Get ready for a wildcat QB!

  111. el burro sabio November 17, 2015 7:00 pm

I think Mr. Tsai is too nice to say why Reilly does not play.

  112. Warrior fan November 17, 2015 7:03 pm

JJ beat Boise St once that’s it.. Boise dominated our conference while JJ was more concerned about breaking a passing record instead of trying to beat Boise St.. Stop it already with JJ. Sitake, Salavea best choices for UH

  113. kkv3000 November 17, 2015 7:05 pm

ST, thank you very much for your comment about Dino Babers. Everyone would be happy to have him as a head coach here, however UH does not have a track record in supporting its football coaches. It has been a dead end job for everyone except Dick Tomey, June Jones did not leave for a stronger program but another rebuilding effort. I wish the best for him and I also do not think that hawaii is the best for him and his family at this time, maybe in the distant future.

So JJ’S body of work is based on not beating Boise St…who was beating everyone in and out of conference…does that mean the Stoops are in that same category then since they lost to Boise St in the Fiesta bowl…

  115. A-House November 17, 2015 7:11 pm

if UH should lose more than 25 players to defection and can only give 25 scholarships – team will be less 25 players? — how does this all work out?

would not be surprised to see a significant number who transfer due to coaching change including Zwahlen – just like Goeas coming home from Kansas(?)

does a non-scholarship player have to “red-shirt” if he moves out to another D-1 school?

  116. Frannyk November 17, 2015 7:25 pm

    Bryson.

I agree wholeheartedly! All your points are spot on! JJ is the only man for the job!

Camanse-Stevens could play quarterback in a pinch. He throws a nice all. He is a gamer.

With the caveat that I do not specialize in immigration law, no governor may prohibit the travel of a non-citizen from one state to another. It violates the U.S. Constitution. The government would have to demonstrate a compelling state interest in restricting the right to travel. Once a non-citizen is admitted into the U.S., cleared by homeland security, given a green card and obtains a passport, he or she may travel freely from state to state. The republican governors who say they will not allow Syrian refugees into their state are posturing for the media.

  127. MattyBoy November 17, 2015 9:27 pm

    Hey al!

Long time no see! Do you think UH has a chance at getting a coach that will bring excitement back to Hawaii football and put fans back in the seats of Aloha Stadium? Or does it look like we have a second coming of Chow as HC of UH?

  128. Frannyk November 17, 2015 10:00 pm

    NotNasti.

Not only Republican Governors are saying no. Posturing you say? Do you mean like Obummer has for the last 7 years?

GW Bush did some bone head things. But Obummer may be the worst president we have ever had. Quit drinking the Kool Aid.

Those Governors who are saying no are showing more leadership than Obummer.

  129. winning November 17, 2015 10:40 pm

Most Asinine statement I have ever heard by our governor. Yeah! Syrian refugees should get along real well with the locals. Plus the tourists can interact with the Syrian plight! And maybe adopt them and take them home. Our tourist dollars should soar like you never saw before, right down the toilet!! What happened to his promise of helping the UH athletic dept., by the way?

  130. Frannyk November 17, 2015 11:45 pm

    IGE IS AN IDIOT!

DID YOU GUYS VOTE FOR HIM? I sure didn’t. All of a sudden Duke is looking really good to all of us. What a mistake to vote for IGE. What were you all thinking???

  131. NotNasti November 17, 2015 11:51 pm

    FearGod & FrannyK
The reason the governors are posturing is because they know that they cannot legally ban non-citizens admitted into the US from traveling into their states. Ige himself was posturing when he said he would welcome them “with Aloha.” Your beef is with the federal government if they decide to allow Syrian refugees into our country. I am not a left winger at all. I am a lawyer who has sworn to uphold the laws of our nation and state. So let me repeat this one more time. The states do not have jurisdiction to deny entry to non-citizens. It is not my opinion. It is the law. I have never revealed my personal opinion, because well, it is personal.

  132. kev-1 November 17, 2015 11:58 pm

#124 … A typical right wing response to a left wing comment. By reading many of your posts the last few days, it is pretty clear where your beliefs are. I am guessing that you don’t believe in a lot of equality in your life. You may also want to take down that poster of Tulsi from your wall. You know the one that you have next to the poster of Kim Davis? Tulsi is a democrat. Or what do you call it? Democrack?

You introduce this garbage to the football blog, and often have the nerve to end your posts with “back to football?” Come on.

FearGod? nah. I’d rather thank him, honor him, and respect him.

  133. kev-1 November 18, 2015 12:04 am

The Syrian refugee crisis is definitely a difficult situation. Without being able to adequately screen refugees, it is just plain dangerous. What also worries me though, is that people are so quick to say “no, not here” and have nothing to say about the fact that there are a lot of innocent people in Syria who need help from all of the hell that they are trying to escape from. Everyone wants to comment that Ige is an idiot for saying he’ll take refugees, but no one has the courage to say that someone needs to help? That is troubling. Terrorism is real. Yes. Not everyone is a terrorist though. I wish the solution were easier.
