    from previous thread:

    23. i understand the idea is to balance out scholarship numbers between men and women. so my question was what is the grand total of all scholarships in all sports funded/partially funded? does it end in something .5 ie 140.5 or whatever? im just curious if there is a .5 somewhere else in another sport, i dunno, pick a sport lets say its mens tennis contains 2.5 or something.

    24. i see, so it was hall who had poor choice of words. smh.

on the “lanky” discussion. long and lanky in volleyball is a good thing. you can’t just focus on the literal definition of the word. also, look at the context of how the description of of “lanky” was used. it was being used to describe her positive attributes playing the game. in the same breath as calling ozee lanky … hall also calls her “silky smooth” … negating any negative “ungraceful” attributes that may be attributed to the term “lanky.”

    … just my opinion.

1,5. I can’t believe I’m involving myself in this discussion topic, but nothing else to talk about tonite. Isles’ is pointing out correctly that lanky carries a negative connotation. Clearly, Hall did not mean for it to come across that way, which isles also points out above (just a “poor choice of words”) And isles’ suggestion of slender is a good one, along with thin.

That being said, it could have been worse: gangly, rangy, spindly, gaunt, beanpole. Probably making a mountain out of a mole hill at this point, and I would cut Hall some slack. After all, he’s a volleyball coach, not an award-winning writer.

    1. i don’t know how to explain it any better to you.
The NCAA dictates the number of scholarships per sport. The total number of scholarships a school can award depends on the sports the school offers. so for argument’s sake, a school offers football 85, baseball 11 and men’s volleyball 4.5 equals 100.5 and offers softball 22, women’s volleyball 12 and basketball 15 equals 49. so that school would be offering a total 149.5 scholarships. Baseball and men’s volleyball allowed to split scholarships so that means more than 15 students could receive money depending on how the coaches divides it up.
But just because there is a maximum on the number of scholarships offered by sport, there are some schools who don’t ‘fully fund’ certain sports. Not all schools give the max of 12 scholarships in volleyball for example.

And, yes, it was Hall. If you read the initial post which was the UH release, all players had their accommplishments listed followed by Hall quote:

    6. looks like someone looked at thesaurus.com, because I did too. And the first alternative was tall and thin. And then the other less attractive options.. Agree, can’t believe we’re having a discussion about this.

still don’t think it was a poor choice of words. especially when adding silky smooth. I read that as graceful.

Anyone think that more than one Big West team makes it into the NCAA tourney?

  10. haleiwacrossfitter November 14, 2015 7:36 pm

I know Martin was a top beach recruit, but didn’t realize she was the TOP recruit. That’s pretty awesome. I know her beach partner is Kathryn Plummer. Was hoping that maybe since Martin came to Hawaii, she could have swayed Plummer…oh well. 🙂

    #9…no, unfortunately

    7. cindy thank you for explaining the quantity in scholarships. so conclusion is that apparently there is a ‘half’ quantity somewhere in the grand total for a college that offers all sports and fully funds them. ncaa or no clue at all offers a maximum of something that ends in half = they are a half-you guessed it entity.

ok i guess the arguing for a player 17-18 years young female being called something of less attractive needs to be nipped in the bud. i added to the argument because i agree with a poster on the previous thread, rage777, that calling a girl, and a local girl at that, lanky is no compliment. and it certainly is unsavory if put into writing on a media especially the schools official media, let alone copy pasted onto a news media forum of some kine essentially repeating it.

should of used slender to couple with the silky smooth. i dont need hall to write correctly, but because he said it backs up the argument i recalled of someone hoping UH not to hire him, first the dui and now lacking class/tact.

  13. H-Man November 15, 2015 5:50 am

#9, yes. I think Long Beach State, with a current RPI of 53, should make it in.

And I didn’t know “lanky” was a negative adjective. I am old and crusty, but in my time, lanky just meant tall and thin.

Minnesota was already ranked No. 1 in the RPI, so they should be unanimous No. 1 in the AVCA?

  14. 'ohanaInBellingham November 15, 2015 6:12 am

    #9: I don’t believe so.
#13: Is it likely that even if LBSU wins out – CSUF, UCR, Pacific, and Denver – that LBSU’s RPI will fall due to the SOS for all but Denver?

  15. 'ohanaInBellingham November 15, 2015 6:14 am

  16. livealoha November 15, 2015 8:14 am

LBSU is not gonna make it with an RPI in the 50s. There are 30 something automatic bids, and then 30 something at-large spots. Unless LBSU can make it within the top 35, they’re guaranteed out. Highly unfortunate… and I don’t see their RPI jumping much.

I’m not sure why “middle-aged”(?) men are debating the appropriateness of the word lanky regarding a female athlete. Stop creating drama where none exists. Just like in football & basketball, having ‘reach’ is a desired quality in a volleyball player. To me (a former athlete of the female variety), lanky isn’t a derogatory descriptor. So stop making it into one. Thin and skinny while perhaps preferable in the male fantasy, to me might indicate someone not as strong as someone who is lanky. Lanky is a somewhat common descriptor of athletes. All of our Wahine are in great athletic shape. Again, stop looking for manini to use to deride Coach Hall. It serves no purpose.

  18. Todde November 15, 2015 10:44 am

No. 15 Thanks for the link. It works perfect.

    new thread up for Sunday

Agree the whole lanky thing needs to be put to rest.
    It was coach speak.
andagree with 17. a common description of an athlete. probably used more when discussing male athletes. But, then, Hall has been on the men’s side for a while.

  20. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 10:48 am

BTW, 1420 has NFL game. Wahine will be joined in progress.
