Wednesday updated: Iosia, Sibley sign

gym

Long practice this morning 6:30-9:30 a.m. then rest of the holiday off. Sounded like a beach day. The reminder was to wear sun screen.

Not sure if UH will get its NLIs cleared through compliance. I know that Iosia and Sibley have signed theirs, Sibley’s dad said it’s been faxed. Those are the two commits for indoor. Emma Smith is a walk-on and is supposed to be playing both beach and indoor.

Previous thread. Mahalo OrbitalRipZ for the Hartong link. She’s gotten better I think and still wearing that number 17! Anybody remember the sentimental reason why 17?

    Cindy,

Do you happen to know who Jeff Hall is going to pair up Katie Spieler with? Nikki?

    GO BOWS!

    1. i think she chose 17 just for the sake of choosing it at first. then it was coincidental to her grandfathers, a pearl harbor survivor, hull number.

that video posted by orbitalripz showed hyundai snatched up quite a monster. she is in essence their vy canis majoris

    3. No. 17 was always for her grandfather Royal. Never a coincidence.

Huskers beat MSU in 5; Texas-Kansas going 5…

  8. isles November 11, 2015 4:55 pm

    5. perhaps cindy forgot the qualifier ‘at first’ 😀

btw maverick since you expertise in rpi. forgot to ask what would uh rpi be if bakersfield matches did not exist and they had won vs ucla/undefeated?

  9. Cindy Luis November 11, 2015 5:13 pm

    8. no I read what you wrote and there was no ‘at first’ in the selection. it was chosen from the beginning for her grandfather.

Maverick answered that. check on either Monday or Tuesday thread.

Texas beat Kansas in 5…Didn’t realize that Iosia was 5-11…For some reason I thought she was 5-8…

  11. roofer68 November 11, 2015 5:32 pm

Cindy’s correct, Emily Hartong chose #17 in her freshman year to honor her grandfather, Royal George “Joe” Hartong who was stationed on the USS Montgomery, DM17, which was stationed at Pearl Harbor during the Dec 7 attack. The Montgomery was originally a Wickes class DD #121 launched and commissioned in 1918, then convert to a light minelayer #DM17 in 1931.

  12. Hapaguy November 11, 2015 5:38 pm

I read that Hartong was making $18,500/mo USD + housing & transportation allowance, round trip airfare for her and 2 family members, and an interpreter playing for Hyundai E&C for the eight month season. Not bad money. So happy for her….

Add to Cindy’s beach list of 5, Cyrene Hertzog 5’8 Snonomish High, Wash. and Regan Hurkett 6’2 Red Rock High, Arizona.

UC Davis is running a promo for Sunday’s WVB game. Buy a ticket to the football game on Saturday, use the stub for the match with Hawaii on Sunday. Also, the match with Hawaii is the first game of a Sunday doubleheader, with the Aggies MBB team playing right after the volleyball game. They’ve averaged about 500 for WVB this year. Will be interesting to see how well they can do this Sunday with Hawaii as a draw, the football stub promo, and as the lead in to the men’s BB game. It could be a good one.

  16. tongo November 11, 2015 8:20 pm

Both are solid. It will be great watching them grow. Welcome!

  17. Maverick November 11, 2015 8:49 pm

    8. The “Bracketology (11/9)” thread on Volleytalk discusses this. I don’t post to VT, I just read it for the articles, like Playboy.

  18. blunite November 11, 2015 8:55 pm

Glad to hear Hartong is doing well. Regarding Emma Smith walk-on: Can someone help me out here; there are no more UH VB scholarships available for 2016. Is she coming in on a basketball scholarship?

  19. Maverick November 11, 2015 9:13 pm

    18. A walk-on pays his/her own way–no scholarship.

  20. Ron November 11, 2015 9:17 pm

Emma Smith is paying her own way. Most libero’s everywhere walk on. Dave has only given out three to libero’s that I can think of and I am not sure about Longo.

  21. Maverick November 11, 2015 9:20 pm

    20. Longo received some form of financial aid, not an athletic scholarship.

  22. Ron November 11, 2015 9:27 pm

Thanks Maverick, I wasn’t sure about her.

  23. blunite November 11, 2015 9:46 pm

Despite being a walk-on Emma Smith’s credentials are solid. She’ll probably concentrate on beach; I don’t see Shoji sitting Kahakai (since he gave her a scholarship.)

  24. noblesol November 11, 2015 10:04 pm

UC Irvine vs. Hawaii (Tuesday, Nov 17th) will be broadcast on ESPN3. UCI home attendance is averaging 316 per game. Their last two home matches, vs. CSUN 210, vs. Long Beach 286. They’ll have been on a bye week prior to Hawaii, their last match vs. UCSB (W 3-1), on Nov. 7th. No other Irvine athletic events scheduled that night. No promos (yet anyway). If they draw above average, it will likely be all those there to see Hawaii.

  25. Maverick November 11, 2015 10:18 pm

    22. Ron, who were the three, Kahakai, Kaaihue, and ?

  26. noblesol November 11, 2015 11:04 pm

Cal Poly vs. Hawaii (Thursday, Nov 19th). Cal Poly home attendance avg. is 528 this season. Their last outing at home vs. UCD (L 2-3) had 317 attend, their smallest crowd of the year. The largest home crowd was vs. UCSB, 1034 attending. The match on the 19th will be their last home date of the year, and senior night for Hannah Schleis, Maddie Kuber and Nicole Kessler. No other Cal Poly athletic events are scheduled that night, no promos scheduled.

  27. Cal Poly alumni November 11, 2015 11:16 pm

    26. You sure know quite a bit about Cal Poly. I’m glad that there are no other Cal Poly athletic events scheduled that night and no need for promos. Whoever is truly interested in volleyball and can attend will do so. Last time the conflict with football caused the match to be played three hours earlier which was so detrimental for a fatigued team as they had played five sets with Irvine the previous night. As a result they lost a close five-game match to Davis. Originally the match had been scheduled for 7 PM but then at some point it was changed. So now Cal Poly will not make the playoffs. I hate it when football conflicts with volleyball. It is always volleyball that has to concede to football. For the same reason Hawaii had to play six matches on the road. Hawaii will be pretty tired by the time they have to play Cal Poly and UCSB. Next year I hope that both Hawaii and Cal Poly volleyball won’t have to take a back seat to football.

#27 Probably not the place to discuss it, but IMO football is at the peak of it’s popularity and in the not too distant future to begin a decline. The big money in the sport goes to too few, for the rest it’s beginning to become a burden. The damage to health and associated life time costs will soon be calculated by class action law firms across the country, and those costs will include those with severe brain issues, and the associated early deaths and suicides. They will look to cash in and seek settlements across the country at all organizational levels where football is sponsored and generating dollars. They’ll proceed with their suits when it has become clear in the public mind that the sport is doing great damage to the health of many, with but few reaping the rewards. The NFL has had it’s first brush with this and settled. Universities, colleges, and schools across the country will be next. All that has to happen is for the jury pools of people disenfranchised with the sport to grow sufficiently that the lawyers won’t even have to go to trial, the schools and leagues will read the writing on the wall and settle. I’ve read case studies on CTE damage, and if I had it to do over, I wouldn’t have played one down of football.

  29. livealoha November 12, 2015 12:19 am

Iosia is the best pure setter Hawaii has signed since Kamana’o.

Smith is also one of the best libero prospects in SoCal. I’m kinna surprised she’d be OK with being a walk on at UH. Maybe other schools would only allow her to play either beach or indoor only, but she’s a scholarship type libero, and will come in and challenge for playing time right away. I thought she was a lock at USC or UCLA.

Don’t know too much about Sibley as I don’t have much contacts up there in the club scene. But her youtube video’s are quite impressive. She’s an all around outside much like Greeley, but with more pop already.

  30. Ron November 12, 2015 6:00 am

Maverick, I was counting Longo when I said three along with the other two you mentioned.

  31. rage777 November 12, 2015 6:15 am

I thought the reason Longo didn’t go back to Penn State was because they didn’t have a scholarship for her. So my impression was that she was getting a scholarship to come to Hawaii.

  32. kahuna November 12, 2015 6:46 am

I think it was made clear by Shoji that Longo was NOT on scholie. He mentioned that UH offered enough financial aid to make the transfer possible. Factor in the fact that her boyfriend was transferring to UH from PSU made it “easier” for her to come.

  33. Cindy Luis November 12, 2015 7:26 am

    29. agree about Sibley. very much like Greeley. Six rotation player, very good indoor and beach. competitive swimmer as well. This was the story I did on her last July for those who can access it.

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/sportspremium/20150711_WAHINE_VOLLEYBALL_Headline__medium1UH_gets_potential__6rotation_player_.html

Yes about Longo, she received financial aid.
Smith is an invited walk-on, supposed to walk on for both indoor and beach. coaches can’t comment on walk-ons until after they are enrolled in school so we’ll hear more about her maybe this summer or maybe not until fall camp.

    New thread up for Thursday
