Collie receives support

In the athletic complex’s auditorium, slotback Dylan Collie was summoned to the front of the room.

Collie, who dropped three passes in a 41-21 loss to UNLV, was unsure of what to expect next.

Interim head coach Chris Naeole, sitting in the third row, rifled a football toward Collie.

Collie caught the ball.

Then Naeole asked the other players and coaches: “Do you trust Dylan to catch the ball?”

There was a resounding yell of “Yes!”

“To hear that response, and to know everyone’s got my back, and I trust everybody else, I’ve got to be accountable,” Collie said. “Was Saturday a good day for me? No. Absolutely not. It was awful. But it’s a matter of bouncing back and knowing I’ve got the quarterback’s trust, and I’ve got the coaches’ trust.”

    Good morning, Tsaikos!

  2. Down with... November 10, 2015 11:20 am

3 more home games. Go to the stafium spend money and show support for the players and UH. Don’t let the student section beat us FANS they never have the past 4 years. Go Bows!!!

  3. Bugaz November 10, 2015 11:23 am

Just settle down and do your job. Don’t overthink it. Catch the ball

  4. FearGod November 10, 2015 11:25 am

Guesstimate distance from the third row to the front of the room?
Was it chess high or face high?
We might have found our QB for the next game

  5. Maddog50 November 10, 2015 11:27 am

Down with-you are my new best friend! Coach Naoele did a good thing not only for this kid but for the whole team…..good move. Now can somebody get to coach Mason and tell him to put KT outside in a 5/6/7 technique and turn him loose! Fresno is going off tackle outside and throw-this would be a totally disruptive move especially with two guys coming off real shaky performances. We have been beat by these guys before meaning shaky QBs but early and often will cause them to fold they are on the brink-push them over! We need more KT!!!!!

  6. mileHIwarrior November 10, 2015 11:31 am

Coach Naeole at QB? HECK NO!! O-line brah! Ok back to lurking.

  7. hitmanhart November 10, 2015 11:33 am

morning all !! hit slotback Dylan Collie with a short pass 1st play of the game !! to get him going and show him the you are the man !!

  8. Old School Dave November 10, 2015 11:39 am

Best of luck to Quint0n Pedroza. Hard luck and some bad breaks, but he earned his diploma.

  9. Maddog50 November 10, 2015 11:54 am

Realize it’s College football and realize these are kids-but when your a receiver you catch the football as a job. So this young guy has ability to do his job. He might want to take a look at how he channels his energy in pregame and when he hits the field. Believe me it takes intense concentration to execute in this sport. A the young players need to clearly focus on their role each and every down and all else can wait for another time-

  10. hitmanhart November 10, 2015 11:57 am

was watching some old UH hawaii game !! the noga brother games !! like how they made use of them on defence !! move them around not only in one spot !! coach Mason should watch and take some note or better yet call coach wags how he would use 90 Kennedy Tulimasealii

  11. FearGod November 10, 2015 12:01 pm

No.6 He rifled the ball…The reciever caught it…Try that combo in the game.
Ok back to lurking as one say

  12. Down with... November 10, 2015 12:01 pm

Maddog50-much respect! Just a fan trying to show support and be at the games I can make in person. Never went to the UH, but that’s MY TEAM. Sure I have other college favorites, NFL etc but ILH OIA and UH is what really matters to me. The rest is just other games available to watch when the UH is not playing (win or lose).

I sit in an almost empty stadium every home game thinking…”whatever happened to the good ol days, when our team even when not good, “banged” at home like we were top 20… days of the ol’ Triple option, Run and shoot… days when we filled the stadium and cheered our asses off and rolled up the lineup and threw streamers as high as possible (sorry Stadium Authority-but that was fun)….walking out of the game on a high, talking it up with strangers/folks as we walked out to our cars, all because the UH represented the islands and all us local folks…no one just came into our stadium and walked over us…no one…I miss those days.” Oh well, I’ll be at the next 3 games cheering as usual (win or lose) because the student athletes need us and the UH needs our money and the island needs Football…Aloha and see you guys at the game. Go Bows!

  13. Maddog50 November 10, 2015 12:11 pm

Down with-those days will return. Need some wins and a few headliners-we have one now in KT. It will happen

  14. hitmanhart November 10, 2015 12:13 pm

time to see Beau Reilly at qb !! at 6’6” got try him might be what we looking for !! also
lettered three years in both volleyball as his team’s setter, and basketball as a forward in high school so this guy has to have some talent to give him a try !! plus all chow qbs that he started never turn out !! so beau reilly might be da one !!

  15. A-House November 10, 2015 12:13 pm

    Maddog50 and all others!

enjoy KT for the next 3 games as these will be his last at UH —

NFL calling and he will declare — don’t really blame his to pursue his dream

unfortunately for us, we can only hope that there is another UH player who can represent what KT and other players from the past represented on defense

  16. A-House November 10, 2015 12:21 pm

I too would like to see what Beau Reilly has in his stable

my expectation is that Reilly or Zawhlen will be the staring QB in 2016 — 1st choice is Zwahlen — heck, how do you spell his name??

it would be very interesting how JJ, not my first choice – want someone younger, would tweak his offense watching what’s happening at the college and pro levels

  17. Stephen Tsai November 10, 2015 12:40 pm

Someone suggested that Beau Reilly could be like that Wisconsin two-way player. They’re both the same height. Plus, Reilly’s got that subtle toughness. Look at his brother, Trevor Reilly, a tough-hitting player for the Jets. (I just wanted to slip in a daily Jets reference.)

  18. NorthShoreFan November 10, 2015 12:42 pm

    Guud Afternoon Tsaikos…bootiful day.

Watched Collie at practice before the season. Made my decision that he is going to be a great one. Not good…great. He has great hands and will to catch the ball. He was diving all over to secure the ball. One bad day at the office doesn’t reflect the talent this young man has. Some of the other receivers, tight end & running backs included, wasn’t so impressive.
    Q & Collie stood out.

Good move by coach naeole. Like I stated before. These three games will show who the players are and who the splinter pickers will be.

    IMUA WARRIORS!

  19. NorthShoreFan November 10, 2015 12:44 pm

Jets? What team is that? What league they play in?

    I’m addicted to this blog.

I don’t have a Facebook account, so this is pretty much it.

I used to blog at RogerEbert.com, but I don’t go there anymore because it makes me sad.

I am blogging from the Kapolei Public Library.

I kill time here before I go to work.

I guess this library is trying to discourage the homeless from entering the building, because they got rid of all the comfortable chairs. In it’s place are desks.

    That’s all I’ve got.

    Have a nice day, everybody.

  21. Willie November 10, 2015 1:07 pm

#18NSF, agree with you that he is a very good receiver regarding skill sets. Runs excellent square routes, knows how to find space, got soft hands and uses them predominantly. Kinda reminds me of a less explosive, shade slower D Bess. He had a not so good game, he is a young student athlete. Looking for good things from him going forward.

  22. Darren November 10, 2015 1:10 pm

#18, NSF. I think we were at the same practice! The number of drops by the others was actually pretty nauseating. I remember thinking at the time…hope this doesn’t continue into the season.

Collie really does seem like the real deal, but I get some other impressions from reading MD50’s #9. So maybe Collie just needed a healthy smack of humility to get his head back on straight. Expecting to see a lot of good things from Collie in these upcoming weeks.

  23. warriorsanddolphins November 10, 2015 1:17 pm

Dylan, if you are reading this, i just want to tell you that you are one of the best players on the team. As an added bonus, you are just a freshman and we can have you for three more years. You have the talent just like your older brothers so just shake it off because when you become a senior you will have done major accomplishments for the team.

  24. hitmanhart November 10, 2015 1:18 pm

Collie – a great reciever with his best days ahead.
Nae’ole – a great coach with his best days ahead.
That was a great move by the coach and a great catch by Collie.

This team has it. Let’s hope they bring it this Saturday.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  28. Da Punchbowl Kid November 10, 2015 2:16 pm

Fondest Aloha and a big Mahalo to Quentin Pedroza. Thank you for being a Warrior, best wishes for your future.

  29. moocher November 10, 2015 2:43 pm

Good thing collie caught the ball….
If he didn’t I guess coach would’ve told him something like “that’s the last ball you will drop. Now pick it up, throw it in a trash can and forget it.”

I don’t know….just saying it was a “ballsy” move by the coach 🙂

  30. Don Weir November 10, 2015 2:44 pm

    Tsaiko’s
I need to go to an Aloha Oe dinner for family on Saturday (actually Gary Spotts’s brother & wife are joining him in Texas).
I have two tickets Sec HH Row 44 Seat 3-4 for the Fresno game.
Great seats and I do not want them to go to waste.
I’m in the book so call; many of you have my e-mail as well.

  32. kev-1 November 10, 2015 3:25 pm

There has got to be a reason why Reilly hasn’t even been considered, right? I mean it hasn’t even been suggested by the coaching staff (at least publically). If no one at the 1 and 2 spot has been able to succeed, why not?

    Any insight ST?

unfortunate for us fans cause we goin miss his “fire” and play making – need some young player already on the team to step up or maybe new coaches will recruit another player like him – local or from parts elsewhere.

I can only think it would add motivation and excitement to the players step to know who the next Head Coach would be. Maybe just maybe balls will be caught, passes will be on target and tackles will be made. Oh! and we get another W.
That’s okay we wait, to give every coach in America with D1 experience a fair shot. That’s the Aloha Spirit. The Process….

Can you imagine Collie, Ursua, Bernard, Ewaliko and possibly Harris playing in the slot position in Coach Jones offense.

Reminds me of Pilares, Stutzman, Owens, Bess, Grice-Mullen and Ostroski.

    Looking Good People!

  50. Makai November 10, 2015 9:48 pm

#46 not even close. Those guys you mentioned could catch the ball and had YAC capability. We haven’t seen anything yet from these slots besides drops and excuses. Not saying they can’t get better, but those guys you mentioned were game changers.

Urusa is the unknown since he couldn’t play in games this year.

#46. Why can’t Bailey do it this year. Do we need a TE and RB on every play. If they are going to slot out the TE on certain plays why don’t they add a true slot instead. If blocking is a concern put the TE as a H back and sub out the RB. If they go empty – two wide, three slots.

  56. el burro sabio November 10, 2015 10:21 pm

I thought we don’t want assistant coaches with no coaching experience.

  57. Frannyk November 10, 2015 10:27 pm

Check out Zwahlen’s highlights. He’s awesome! Would love to see him at least get a chance.

Would love to see Kanoa or his dad Jim as the new announcer! Anyone else?

  58. hitmanhart November 10, 2015 10:28 pm

no only for the head coaching job i think they said !!

  59. pokesquid November 10, 2015 10:51 pm

    48…

Relax a bit…the players I listed are still young…meaning they are 2 freshman, 1 soph and 2 JC guys.

The past players I mentioned, I believe didn’t break out until after their soph season with the exception of Owens, I believe…Furthermore, those past guys played and had a chance to learn under Jones system and they also had a much better more experienced receivers coach which helped make a difference as well.

As for Ursua…nothing about him is unknown…The guy is and will be a stud player for us…ST has mentioned several times how he is making big plays in practice and both the players and OC Bailey has also recognized his abilities.

John will only get better…and his past and present is proving that…I bring up his past, because he played at 2 different HS in Utah while playing multiple skilled positions on the offense and was still recognized as the #10 best player in the state of Utah coming out of high school.

To me that says incredible talent, RYE CHIA!

  60. el burro sabio November 10, 2015 11:01 pm

I would like to see Mac back at DC.

    Elimimian back at DB coach.

Miano at ST and walk-on coordinator.

Nate Ilaoa’s coaching experience is at the high school level only, I believe….Don’t know about Mana Silva.

  62. hitmanhart November 10, 2015 11:10 pm

  65. pokesquid November 10, 2015 11:24 pm

    61…

I didn’t know Mac was over 70 yrs old…But hey, one of my favorite defensive coaches of all time is 78 years old and still coaching in the NFL….Mr. Dick LeBeau.

I say if Mac’s health is good, he still has the energy to coach and he is willing to come out of retirement to help us on the defensive side…then I would be very very happy.

  66. hitmanhart November 10, 2015 11:38 pm

  68. SteveM November 11, 2015 2:15 am

hitmanhart and pokesquid — I also would like to see Greg McMackin back as the Defensive guru. 47 years college and NFL experience as a defensive coach–DC at Seattle Seahawks, Miami (FL), Texas Tech, Navy, Utah, and HI.

Although he related well to Hawaii and the players, I do not think he would come out of retirement and return. The only instance I see him returning is if June Jones asks him to return and help make things right one more time.

  69. papayalips November 11, 2015 5:15 am

June Jones appears to be the leading candidate to be the next Hawaii football coach.

Norm Chow was fired last week and replaced by Chris Naeole, who will serve as interim coach for the rest of the season.

Jones, 62, is the greatest coach in Hawaii history, going 76-41 with six bowl teams from 1999-2007. Frustrated by lack of support from the UH administration, the former Grant High and Portland State quarterback left for Southern Methodist, where he coached until resigning early in the 2014 season.

Hawaii will wait until after the season to name a successor to Chow, and — if there is a commitment to provide the resources necessary to compete in the Mountain West Conference — Jones is the guy to get the program going in the right direction.

For the past year, Jones has been a member of a task force to create a state sports authority in Hawaii. The group will present a bill to voters in January to help finance a renovation of Aloha Stadium.

  70. Maddog50 November 11, 2015 5:25 am

AHouse my brother I too have a great appreciation for KT. His play well spoken and a smile that should have charmed the flag into the officials pocket Sat! That said to truly show his ability he needs to be aligned outside that would probably harken back to a Terrell Suggs type-undersized plays like a giant. We’ll see. Regarding Moses….could be health…..could be a poor choice of words….could be right now these kids need building up not tearing down….could be, that some coaches did not care for his coaching technique. This coach falls into the category of nomad. Lotsa places over time and that normally says a lot unless there is at least some ascension. A well traveled position coach with relatively short stays at a lot of places. Right now Coach Naoele is trying to win some games for a lot of people–right now he is deeply invested in doing the right thing no matter what-right now he has an extremely young team right or wrong that is still developing. It should not be this young but that’s another story-fr/so. All over the place and some gap fillers trying to win till we get some much needed personell in certain spots. Hats off to Coach N for doing everything he can to finish the season on a good note. Go Warriors!!!!!

  71. cappie the dog November 11, 2015 6:27 am

    If I was AD.

    1. Ivin Jasper
    2. June Jones
    3. Rich Miano
    4. Beau Baldwin
    5. Nick Rolovich

Any of these five candidates would make me happy.

  72. Old School Dave November 11, 2015 6:40 am

Best thing is to keep throwing the ball to Dylan and Devan. They are only RS Freshman with bright futures.

Water Cooler Talk Story: This guy would be a good choice. Defensive guy who’s coached places like Idaho, Nevada, and with Dino at E. Illinois and now Bowling Green. Started his career at Kaiser HS.

    http://www.bgsufalcons.com/coaches.aspx?path=football&rc=529

On the other hand, guys like Ivan Jasper will probably be in line for the Navy HC job in the near future. All a matter of respecting the process (in spite of fan criticism) that seems to be a part of successful programs.

  73. Old School Dave November 11, 2015 6:59 am

On the Sports Animals show, Gary said that it’s coming to the point where local fans are adamant in saying that if the AD/ UH doesn’t hire this coach or that coach, I won’t support them anymore. Hope it’s only talk (“Waha”).

  74. Shoko November 11, 2015 7:08 am

Win and the support will come even if the head coach wasn’t a fan base favorite.

Mahalo to all the Vets that served this great country.

  75. Maddog50 November 11, 2015 7:12 am

You can catch two of the hottest coaches going head to head today at 3 HST. Bowling Green and DB takes on the Western Michigan Broncos headed by PJ Fleck. If you haven’t seen Fleck the youngest coach in the FBS, his antics are interesting! He never turns it down or off. Always lightly dressed and his theme is and had been “row the boat” meaning if your hands aren’t on the oars moving forward then you ain’t gonna make it there. He has the highest rated recruiting class in MAC history. I would probably take BG in this one but it should be a battle-Regarding the next head coach I would not be surprised that if the approach is this is what we’re willing to pay and here is your budget-some of these candidates will push back without some form of commitment. On the same note the candidate will probably take the tack I will deliver this if given a true opportunity. 30k plus in that stadium week in and week out is not that far out of reach-neither is a bowl bid and some revenue for the program. The right guy with the right staff can turn this around rather quickly. That’s my opinion-Go Warriors!!!!!

  76. Rodney November 11, 2015 8:48 am

    Go warriors best Fresno!24-21
    Hire JJ already!!
    Lets get to work!!!

  77. cocobean November 11, 2015 8:54 am

#46. Why wait for JJ, Bailey could do it now if he wanted to. On a number of plays the TE lines up as a slot why not put in a quicker guy instead. We don’t need a TE and RB on every play. If Bailey is worried about blocking he could sub out the RB for an Hback like Vele and go four wide.

  78. Da Punchbowl Kid November 11, 2015 8:57 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 😉

Have to agree with other posters here who see that UH has lots of talent on the team, both now and next year.

If in fact JJ does return, he will have some excellent players to work with. Any coach who is given the job will definitely have a nice talent pool on the UH team.

  79. Trunks420 November 11, 2015 9:47 am

Fleck pumping up his team before the MSU game (they lost, but didn’t roll over at 34-27)

I can understand why June Jones left UH after the 2007 season. He left a lot of money in the NFL to coach at UH. He felt he wanted that one big contract before he retired. He could have left on better terms. I think if he was upfront and said he was looking for a bigger contract. Things might have been different. But, I don’t think he would have taken a million dollar multiple year contract from UH. I also don’t think he wanted to disappoint everyone when he left UH. So he left the only way he knew how to at the time.

Even while at SMU, he remained close to Hawaii. If June Jones is chosen as HC, there will be renewed interest again and higher tickets sales. Will he leave UH again the same way he left after the ’07 season? I hope not. But, what is certain is he will bring back an offense that is exciting. As far as winning, I think UH can win again under Jones.

JJ left for Portland State because Hawaii changed its offense to the
    “data processed Hula T”.

If I remember correctly, JJ said HC Larry Price was very helpful in finding
    him “a place to land”.

FYI, JJ also left UH as a player and ended up at Portland State.

Pokesquid you said the players you mentioned didn’t breakout to after their sophomore season. Let me refresh your memory for you. Kealoha Pilares doesn’t count because he was mostly a running back until his junior year. Ostrowski shouldn’t be mentioned with that group. Owens waited for his time as a slot back till his junior year but was a gifted returner. Here are some freshman year stats for you. Bess:89 receptions 1124 yds 14 TD’s Grice-Mullen: 85 receptions 1128 yds 12 TD’s. Sophmore seasons by Salas (moved to slot) 106 receptions 1590 yds 8 TD’s Stuz 63 receptions 658 yds 2 TD’s. Different systems, but there is no way you can compare the slots we have now to the all time greats. I will agree with you I am excited to see what Urusa does under the lights, but like what Miano said on Inside Access Monday night got watch out for what ST says… lol

One of the things about Ursua sort of went under the radar.
He entered as a partial qualifier. That’s one of the things UH has been able to get done the past year. Some of the best, like Maa Tanuvasa, were able to join UH as partial qualifiers.
UH went through a slump after 1992 when other programs put money into facilities and UH wasn’t allowed to take Props anymore. That changed under June.
