Woolsey is named starter … for now

Three days after changing the head coach, the Warriors changed the No. 1 quarterback.

Ikaika Woolsey today was named the starting quarterback for Saturday’s road game against UNLV — sort of.

“I told Ikaika I’m not afraid to pull the trigger and put Max in,” interim head coach Chris Naeole said of Max Wittek, who started eight of nine games this season. “It could be game day (and) I could change my mind. Right now (Woolsey) is our guy, and we’re going to support him.”

As reported in today’s Star-Advertiser, the captains are: Left tackle Ben Clarke, right guard Dejon Allen, nose tackle Kory Rasmussen, right end Kennedy Tulimasealii, middle linebacker Julian Gener, buck linebacker Jerrol Garcia-Williams, left cornerback Nick Nelson, and punter/kicker Rigo Sanchez.

Go Ikaika and take full advantage of this opportunity.

  2. Former UH Athlete November 4, 2015 11:02 am

Some QB gamesmanship with Naeole? I like it… but I don’t think Tony Sanchez and UNLV will be ill-prepared for two career 50% passers.

  3. Jeezy33 November 4, 2015 11:05 am

    No brainer decision

    Blah.

  5. Former UH Athlete November 4, 2015 11:06 am

I agree that Ikaika really needs to take advantage of this start. It’s probably the most important game for his college career. If he plays well, he’s going to be the guy for the rest of 2015 and will be the significant favorite for the #1 spot in 2016.

If he plays poorly, his days as a starter may be done (maybe gets 2 starts). If Naeole is this quick to make the switch from Wittek, he also may not be scared to give Reilly a shot if Woosley underperforms just to see what UH has in Reilly.

At least this keeps it interesting win or lose.

  6. Former UH Athlete November 4, 2015 11:07 am

made it through 6 posts with no JJ speculations…

  7. Former UH Athlete November 4, 2015 11:08 am

Need a break from that conversation.

  8. Former UH Athlete November 4, 2015 11:11 am

I have a good trivia question:

When was the last time UNLV was a 10 point favorite vs a conference opponent?

This week’s game has touched 10 points at some books. I have no idea when, or if this has ever happened before.

  9. Jeezy33 November 4, 2015 11:12 am

    2. If I ever met Chow in person, the one question I would like to ask him in hope for a honest answer was knowing he had 4 years to rebuild, why he was so adamant about going with the QB that gave us the best chance to win in his eyes over what was better for his and the teams future by recruiting and developing a young QB.

I know when Timmy was a true FR and Colt year 1, didn’t give us the best chance to win. But you recruit and develop someone young so in year 2 and 3 it pays off.

We’ll never know if we could have won more games this year with Woolsey in year 2 of being a full time starter . But I am expecting a little Sean Schroeder development from year 1 to 2.

    6. I find it irritating how Hawaii fans frustrated with Chow think June Jones offense is going to be electric if hired.

Hawaii offense averaged more points than SMU in 2013 and 2014. Jones had all the resources he could ask for backed by millions of dollars. Had a legitimate recruiting base in Texas. They wanted him out.

  11. islandman November 4, 2015 11:19 am

Former captains were Clarke, Wittek, Lance Williams and N. Phillips.

  12. Come on, man! November 4, 2015 11:20 am

jeezy: stephen tsai should do an AMA on the blog comments with norm chow, players, coaches, whatever. that would make things more interesting.

  13. Trunks420 November 4, 2015 11:20 am

Me know chow and he always said he knew Woosley was the better QB on team.

He listened to much to other people he should had stuck with his vision instead of other people.

Naeole knows he won’t have a job after season so he doing what he wants without care of people thoughts

Don’t want to say names but most of what chow did was because of upper people.

    This

lol comparing last two years of SMU’s tenure with norm chow’s scoring average.

stop it. those final two years were a train wreck, both in recruiting, and in coaching. it’s well documented in all the message boards and various articles coming out of dallas fort worth at the time. june jones already checked out and the program was well on its decline.

    Beautiful day in Hawai’i nei….

  16. Hank November 4, 2015 11:25 am

#11 Clarke is still a Captain.

  17. islandman November 4, 2015 11:30 am

    10. jeezy..i’m not advocating for Jones, but his team averaged 26.8 pts per game in 2014; UH averaged 20.9 pts.

  18. islandman November 4, 2015 11:33 am

    16. Former and new captain, Clarke.

  19. Maddog50 November 4, 2015 11:36 am

Glad to see IW get his chance again. Nothing personal but int kill just about anything. Also MW is was ailing and not real mobile. Said it before but in the offense that they are trying to run the QB must be mobile and a run threat. As far as captains go as things went south thru the last several games that’s when being a team leader is the toughest. Not only must you carry your load you have to lighten the load of others with enthusiasm, drive and leadership-
Looking forward to a good game against UNLV. Staunch D and a bunch of points-lay it all out there. They say they will be prepared-show em they ain’t!

  20. 808warriorfan November 4, 2015 11:38 am

I hope Chris Naeole will give Don Bailey the green light and let him call plays that maybe Norm would not have allowed. Hopefully they will approach the last 4 games and a “new season” and shoot to go 4-0 as they are all very winnable games. I like his “tough love” approach to the team

  21. islandman November 4, 2015 11:39 am

It comes down to execution, no matter what the plays on offense or defense.

  22. Hank November 4, 2015 11:40 am

SMU won 5-games in 2013 (JJ’s last full season) … I think that is the total number of wins we had in 2013 and 2014.

  23. cocobean November 4, 2015 11:48 am

I hope Ikaika can pull a Sean Schroeder type turn around with his second chance. There’ve been several UH QBs that weren’t ready for prime time the first year they started but did better when given a second chance. Rolo and Alexander are another two that comes to mind.

  24. Andrew November 4, 2015 11:49 am

I agree with what was said on the radio the past couple days. I’m not advocating either for any coach right now, but gotta feel a little bad for Matlin in the sense that regardless of who is right for the job, if he goes with his choice someone other than June Jones and they don’t work out, he’s going to get much more heat from it than he would otherwise considering it seems that majority of the fans are wanting him back. That is very unfortunate and I hope he doesn’t base his any part of his decision on fan opinion. I think choosing any of the candidates is a big risk regardless of past/current success considering every job has different variables that can alter performance regardless of how good/poor the coach is.

  25. Andrew November 4, 2015 11:50 am

At least the good thing though is that it is his decision and thus the person choosing will actually have he responsibly of the result

  26. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 4, 2015 11:50 am

    Six of one….

Anyway, best to the Bows. Hope they can squeeze out some victories and end the season on an upswing.

  27. Andrew November 4, 2015 11:50 am

    Responsibility*

  28. cocobean November 4, 2015 11:54 am

Chris and Abe are two coaches the new HC would be wise to keep.

As Naeole told the team they’re now auditioning for the next coaching regime, the coaches that want to be retained are also auditioning.

  29. justsomeguy November 4, 2015 11:58 am

I’m calling it right now….If June Jones is reinstated as head coach of Hawaii football, it will end in a tremendous disaster. Please please please do not make this mistake.

  30. Inoa'ole November 4, 2015 11:59 am

I really hope Mckenzie Milton is the starter next year! How fun will it be to watch him in a spread offense at Hawaii whether it be with Jones, Babers, or Miano. All i’m saying is next year will be a very interesting and fun year to watch.

  31. justsomeguy November 4, 2015 11:59 am

Hawaii is full of beautiful traditions, this makes the people of Hawaii very nostalgic for things that once were……..but I promise, June Jones is not the answer to our problems as a football program.

  32. amela November 4, 2015 12:11 pm

June Jones HC and keep Chris Naeole, Abraham Eliminian, Kurt Gouveia. Rolo as OC, Miano DC and Cal Lee as recruiter.

  33. H-Man November 4, 2015 12:12 pm

I don’t think it was the offensive play calling, but the execution was terrible in the Air Force game. For me, the defensive play was really disappointing. It almost looked as though the defense was intentionally playing poorly; as though they were sending a message to someone or to a group of someone. Anyhow, I expect the Warriors will be playing good football come Saturday. I don’t know if they will win, but they will play hard. Just hoping they cut down on turnovers and especially penalties.

  34. 808 November 4, 2015 12:23 pm

    …tremendous disaster…?

There are a lot of people that think he could rekindle that magic again for his second go around. It would be an amazing story.

If JJ is chosen, it will end in a tremendous disaster? Let’s wait and see. Of course, he may not even be chosen for the job.

The good news is a committee is not going to choose the next HC. Mid December is around the corner. It feels like there is a cautious optimism in the air. I think having a fresh start is good for the football program.

  35. jeezy33 November 4, 2015 12:34 pm

    17.

In 2014, SMU averaged 11.1 points per game. Don’t think the team scored a single TD while June was coaching before he was asked to quit.

In 2013, SMU averaged 26.8 points per game while Hawaii averaged 27.4

When you factor that SMU has way more money, better facilities, better athletes, better recruiting ground, that offense isn’t looking so special in my eyes.

  36. jeezy33 November 4, 2015 12:37 pm

    14. I’m not saying Chow is better than Jones. Far from it. But its ridiculous to think June Jones is the same coach and his offense hasn’t peaked in a evolving football league. Firing Chow had to be done. But let’s not repeat the same mistake and hire a coach who is “checked out” as you say and is on the back end of his coaching career. It’s time we hire someone on the rise and can peak into his career, not decline.

  37. Arcumfortis November 4, 2015 12:37 pm

Things being shaken up! This is needed…..good for coach Naeole. JJ shook things up the first time around and created a buzz (new logo, new unis, new name, exciting and wide open offense, crazy gambling on 4th downs etc). That was a long time ago and I don’t know if the passing of the years will have dampened down his willingness to push the edge. But it will be hard not to hire him this time around. Could it be a disaster if he is hired?…..of course it could. But if he has recovered his swagger it might be exciting…..and we have been a bit short on excitement these past years. So if there is a proven young coach with swag that we can afford maybe we give it a go (Dino Babers type profile). If we are looking at coaches from a tier down or unproven assistants then I say go with JJ. At least it will get everyone fired up (either because they love the idea or hate the idea)……and we really, really need some firing up. There is already a sense of excitement in these few days since coach Chow left. Now maybe Aloha stadium can start to feel like an exciting place again and not the morgue it has turned into. I am also very curious to see how our team responds this weekend. I wouldn’t be shocked if we came out with our hair on fire and won the game.

  38. Old School Dave November 4, 2015 12:38 pm

Best of luck to Coach Naeole , his assistants, and the team. Gotta shoot for 4-0.

Watching Eastern Washington’s games in the FCS playoffs last season and against UW and Oregon. EWU had Vernon Adams at QB last year, but have continued to be successful at 6-2 this season. In light of all of the rabidness among locals and former players advocating the rehiring of June Jones, I hope that AD Dave Matlin will be level-headed and expand the coaching search in order to find the best candidate. Someone like a Ikaika Woolsey, Mackenzie Milton, or maybe even Aaron Zwahlen could prosper in HC Dave Baldwin’s very prolific offense.

  39. 3-Prong November 4, 2015 12:40 pm

Hey all you June Jones detractors, do you think that Arizona State’s pulling of their offer in December of 2011 might have anything to do with his lack of success the last few years at SMU? Maybe a few less recruits wanting to go where a coach wanted to leave? Maybe a lack of administration support when they found out he was trying to leave? How was his record before ASU did that to him? Think about it…

JJ is the only answer at this time. Go Bows!

  40. jeezy33 November 4, 2015 12:40 pm

    24. You make a good point. So many fans love June for what he did that if the next hire fails, he’s going to hear it. I think Matlin needs to go with his gut and live with it like he said on Curran show last night. There are more than 1 good candidates in my opinion. Just dont hire Jones for the short term ticket sales to please the fans. Honeymoon stage only last so long.

  41. RainboWarrior November 4, 2015 12:44 pm

Bring back JJ!!! Not to mention that it will help UH’s bottom line. They should sell season tickets as soon as they hire him, if they choose to.

  42. Shoko November 4, 2015 12:47 pm

Naeole strikes as a big kid in a candy store. The next four weeks should be pretty interesting (win or lose).

  43. jeezy33 November 4, 2015 12:48 pm

I get the why fans want to keep Abe. Relentless recruiter, solid up and coming hard working DB coach. Bled Green and White.

What exactly do fans love about Naeole besides playing in the NFL and being from Hawaii? Was his don’t let the door hit you on the way out interview that awesome?

Hawaii is 107th in the country giving up 2.78 sacks a game. 25 sacks total.
Hawaii is 126th in the country (2nd last in the nation) in rushing yards per game.
The best lineman on the roster is a McMackin recruit.
Is recruiting not important? As the longest tenured coach on the staff, he is responsible for recruiting his O line. I’m just laying out the facts to you guys.

  44. Shoko November 4, 2015 12:58 pm

Fans love Naeole because he’s not Chow. You know its bad when some folks are super elated over an interim coach. Tough times.

  45. islandman November 4, 2015 1:01 pm

    34. jeezy .. i meant in 2013, SMU averaged 26.8 pts., which is what you say too. And right, UH averaged 27.4. I was looking at 2014 stats for UH when they averaged 20.9 pts.

  46. FearGod November 4, 2015 1:03 pm

If Wolsey and Wittek don’t play well and we get blown out
What then? Who do we blame?

  47. jeezy33 November 4, 2015 1:03 pm

    43. I’m talking about coaches that should be retained by the next HC. I can care less already who the interim is. I like Naeole starting Woolsey and stripping Lance and Max of captain. I get why Matlin put Naeole in charge now so we don’t encounter a Benjy Taylor type drama again.

  48. NorthShoreFan November 4, 2015 1:07 pm

    Guud Afternoon Tsaikos…bootiful day.

Hopefully coach Chris can now get the O line in shape and BLOCK! Passing game, run game starts with good protection and blocking the right people.
Also, don’t want to see penalties off the ball that kill gains.
Execute your assignments WARRIORS! … IMUA!

  49. cappie the dog November 4, 2015 1:12 pm

    8.

    Randall Cunningham era?

  50. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 4, 2015 1:13 pm

Matlin needs to be sure to demand and hold accountable June Jones for local recruiting efforts and recruiting by the entire staff if hired.

None of this “if you throw it, they will come” nonsense. And none of this only some coaches need to recruit nonsense that came under the Mack regime.

In fact I would have that written into his contact that if he fails to make a good faith effort to recruit locally, touch bases with schools and local coaches, or if any of his coaches fail to recruit, that would be grounds for termination with clause.

  51. islandman November 4, 2015 1:13 pm

Boosters and fans had a negative reaction to the potential hiring of Jones at ASU. This leads to the question as to how much influence fans and boosters should have on UH’s selection of a HC, where there is a lot of support for Jones

” …worth speculating that a bigger factor was lukewarm-to-hostile reaction from boosters and fans when the word started to get out that the Sun Devils had hired a 58-year-old NFL refugee with the same journeyman/retread vibe as the guy they just fired, 61-year-old Dennis Erickson.”

    http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog/dr_saturday/post/June-Jones-was-Arizona-State-8217-s-new-coach-t?urn=ncaaf-wp11243

  52. Shoko November 4, 2015 1:16 pm

Matlin named Naeole interim only because he’s been there the longest and Chow gave him the title of Assistant Heach Coach.

Whoever the new head coach that is hired there’s a strong possibility that he will clean house when it comes to assembling a staff. Unless, it’s someone who had ties to the program in the past and is familiar with the previous regime’s coaching.

POINT AND COUNTERPOINT: Is coaching football at Hawaii a bad job?
    http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2015/11/4/9659322/hawaii-football-coaching-search

  54. kanak November 4, 2015 1:31 pm

#50 Probably biggest difference is their boosters got fat pockets and not afraid to use it, Hawaii ah… not so much.

  55. bowwar November 4, 2015 1:31 pm

This is my only comment on the coaching situation and the options available…

The change in coaches had to be made and Matlin did it…Probably, a season too long, but we had to give Chow a chance considering the poor support we gave him in schedule, facilities, etc. I thank Norm for “doing his best”, but it just wasn’t meant to be…

As for coaching candidates, I think JJ’s tenure and departure leaves a lot to be desired. There is a lot of “baggage” about his stay here and his abrupt departure. I think we need to “move on” and seek other options despite his obvious appeal.
I also think that Miano’s “ship left” when McMackin left…Miano was the Associate and Interim head coach, but did little to distinguish himself. I believe if Mac had “survived” the “personal issues”, that the job would have been handed over to Miano. I believe Miano is a great “self-promoter”, but hasn’t shown much as a DB coach. Miano has never been a “coordinator”, so that is also a black mark. Lastly, it has been rumored that Miano is still being investigated on his tenure at Kaiser and alleged improprieties…I think we should pass on Miano. I think Rolovich would be a “safe choice”, although he really hasn’t distinguished himself well at Nevada. However, Rolo has a legacy and backing at UH, so he could garner support if he chooses his coaches well. I’m sure there are other candidates available and interested in the UH position and we should entertain them. Everyone has to remember, the last search committee didn’t recommend Chow…Koetter was their recommendation, but the UH Prez nixed it…

I just hope someone comes with a magic wand, as that’s what it will take to move this program forward.

  56. jeezy33 November 4, 2015 1:34 pm

Rich Miano has made it clear that Abe Elimimian is a future star coach in the making like Keith Bhonapha. So pretty clear if any of the 3 between Rolo, Miano, or Jones get the job, Abe at the very least has a job at Hawaii and could get offers elsewhere.

  57. al November 4, 2015 1:39 pm

Hopefully I won’t have to await modification for too long, 12 hours the last time.

jj is not a good choice at all. He was great at a time when we needed him. However, he left us in a tizzy causing our inexperienced chancellor to push the panic button, thus, naming a good defensive coach to manage the entire program.

Richie M. has a target on his back in the eyes of the ncaa recruiting violations advance team and he may have left a bitter pill to swallow amongst the local h.s. School coaches brethren.

We need a coach with aspirations of success for this Hawaii team. One who can recruit, assemble a great staff who also can recruit here and abroad, teach/coach up, and embrace the community. Bring back that toughness on defense and display an offense that will suit the type players that he can recruit too.

A coach/staff with youthful enthusiasm coupled with the know how.

jj’s run n shoot is not the answer. His systems has been solved.

    Yah, he’s out there.
    …nuff said

  58. letsgowarriors November 4, 2015 1:40 pm

lots of people want to bring up Miano has never been a coordinator before (maybe 1 year if u count that failure of his w Lumpy), but i dont see why coordinator is a pre-requisite to be a HC candidate. cherry picking but Dabo Swinney and Art Briles were not coordinators before they became HC and theyre doing pretty well. theres the opposite end where non-coordinators are failures as HC.

but the same can be said about coordinators who eventually become HCs. some succeed, some fail. HC is not only about X&Os.

for me, can the HC motivate. can he create a culture for the program, a foundation that we can use moving forward.

  59. mytake November 4, 2015 1:42 pm

I guess we now know some players were half assing it out there. In that case Chow had to go. I heard back when Tomey was coach, the players feared him. I know I would fear Naeole.

  60. jeezy33 November 4, 2015 1:45 pm

    54. What is the obsession with having to be a coordinator to be a HC? Being a HC is completely different from being any of the assistants. Like Matlin said, you’re basically a CEO and your job is finding good assistants to help you develop players, recruit players, and scheme for games, etc. You don’t learn how to be a CEO while being a coordinator. The Miami Dolphins fired their coach and put the TE coach in charge. Dabo Swinney was a WRs coach and took over Clemson when Tommy Bowden was fired. Its great to be in charge of a good offense or defense but it doesn’t necessarily make you the best candidate. I mean when you see a good coach like Bill Belichick, you don’t make him have to go up the hierarchy to be given a chance to HC.

  61. cocobean November 4, 2015 1:46 pm

I guess we can expect another 6 weeks of who da guy talk. No other known candidate elicits more passionate responses than JJ and rightly so. Highest positives, highest negatives. The main reservation I have about JJ is how much energy he has left in the tank. It’s different when you’re 46 and rebuilding a program than trying to do it at 62. The best thing I like about JJ is not his offense but how he uses his available talent. In my opinion he could’ve taken this roster and come out a winner. Before people jump all over me I repeat this is just my opinion.

  62. NorthShoreFan November 4, 2015 1:48 pm

hoooo. selecting a HC is sooooo confusing…..lot of good point here but we looking at and discussing only about….3-4 coaches? Imagine if you had to look at 10-20+.
Enough to make you head spin.
Whoever it is I hope we have a buy out clause if other teams pursue our coach and also a “reasonable” buy out if we fire him.
Salary should be incentive based. $1 + if you reach your incentives…and..

  63. NorthShoreFan November 4, 2015 1:49 pm

Coach Tomey and Wags and their DC’s had a good game plan for option teams and those boy on the D executed.

  64. Hank November 4, 2015 1:49 pm

#34 JJ was at SMU for 2-games in 2014 …. so to say he is responsible for the entire season is misleading.

  65. jeezy33 November 4, 2015 1:51 pm

    58. I don’t think anyone was half assing it. But everyone is human and there comes a point when you have no leadership at the top, you become what your leader is. When you have no confidence in that leader, it becomes harder to do your job with confidence. When your leader makes and allows excuses, it rubs off on the team and they start making excuses. The culture needs to be changing and it seems like Naeole is trying to change it.

  66. jeezy33 November 4, 2015 1:53 pm

    63. Stop it! His team got blown out 88-6 in those 2 games. Then he was ran out. That team was awful and he was every bit responsible for that mess. That”s such a cop out excuse.

  67. jeezy33 November 4, 2015 2:02 pm

Why do people make excuses for people in a results driven industry?????

If you’re a realtor, and you don’t sell houses, you dont last. Doesn’t matter how nice or how hard you work.

If you want to be a college or NFL HC, your job is to win games and put fans in the seats. Plain and simple. You don’t get hired for what you used to do years ago. You get hired for what you are projected to do based on current results. Every legend meets their day. Paterno, Bowden, Spurrier, Beamer. OCs like Chow hit their peak as well as Monte Kiffin.

  68. Come on, man! November 4, 2015 2:02 pm

“I’m not saying Chow is better than Jones. Far from it. But its ridiculous to think June Jones is the same coach and his offense hasn’t peaked in a evolving football league.”

the latter is questionable, unless you have technical and schematic arguments to make about why the june jones run and shoot won’t work/be effective in today’s game.

also, you sort of missed the point of my post. the decline in 2013-2014 wasn’t strictly the result of the offense or not having the chops to succeed with better facilities and recruits.

there were all kinds of issues with june jones the last few years at SMU, including the arizona state fiasco. the recruiting was extremely bad, the relationship with administration was dysfunctional, and so on. people at SMU were publicly saying that june jones never wanted to be there and always had his mind on Hawaii (for example, wearing aloha shirts and making people wear leis during games), and so on.

in comparison to what SMU was prior to his tenure there, there’s no question that june jones achieved success, even if SMU never made a BCS bowl. but i don’t think you can look at those last two years in a vacuum like “man, in 2014 (or whatever), they only scored x amount of points. some explosive offensive mind he has” because there were a variety of factors in play at SMU.

  69. Come on, man! November 4, 2015 2:05 pm

“I’m calling it right now….If June Jones is reinstated as head coach of Hawaii football, it will end in a tremendous disaster.”

    thanks, nostradamus.

  70. cheepono November 4, 2015 2:07 pm

definitely not advocating for jj (personally I’d prefer gambling on a younger/hungry coach on the rise), but to compare the average offensive output in 2013 between smu and uh is a stretch. we played usc and oregon state that year but smu played the likes of ttech, tex a&m, tcu, and rutgers. taking into consideration that there isn’t exactly a perfect way to compare two different teams in two different conferences, I understand the logic in looking for any type of metric to form a baseline of comparison. having said that, could the 2013 uh team have been able to put up 23pts against ttech, 13pts against a&m, 17pts against tcu, and 52pts against rutgers? don’t know but based on chow’s last 4 years, I’d say it’d be petty doubtful.

  71. DrakeRamore November 4, 2015 2:07 pm

I have been reading blog comments a lot over the last week. And need to get this off my chest. The Athletic Director made up his mind before the season even started that Chow was out and JJ was in and the firing would happen as soon as was possible. A surprising win against Colorado (even more surprising seeing how we’ve played since) bought Chow more time, that’s all. Everything else is noise and a smoke screen.

Now, whether it would be a good idea to go back to JJ is another matter. When I first heard the AD’s plans I cringed because I already disliked the lack of discipline on his teams with countless bonehead penalties and immature behavior. But after watching Chow’s team this year, all that went out the window. Now I’d sell my soul for some Touchdowns and take the lack of discipline with it.

To those who doubt JJ’s offensive ability must not have been watching UH football from 1999-2008. Offense was never our problem. Defense at times, stupid penalties often, and lack of talent. I haven’t watched SMU football in his tenure, but I would guarantee that they also had a list of non-offense problems when compared to other regional schools.

So, sit back and enjoy the ride. BTW my source on intel is good

  72. Come on, man! November 4, 2015 2:08 pm

“What is the obsession with having to be a coordinator to be a HC? Being a HC is completely different from being any of the assistants.”

coordinators tend to have much more responsibility than a position coach. therefore, it makes sense to look at coordinators versus the receivers coach to be a Head Ball Coach candidate for obvious reasons.

  73. NorthShoreFan November 4, 2015 2:09 pm

..football is a evolving sport. seems most of the innovations come from the college ranks..imho.
it takes time to build, can’t be impatient, we had too many position coach changes to be effective. hope the next coach can keep his staff for a few years.

  74. jeezy33 November 4, 2015 2:11 pm

    67. Well then… Look at where SMU is from a win loss stand point with millions put into that program vs Hawaii right now… His off field issues and on field product doesn’t scream confidence and commitment.. Sorry.

  75. Come on, man! November 4, 2015 2:11 pm

thank the lord someone can use their brain. points don’t exist in a vacuum. teams don’t exist in a vacuum. to judge june jones as a has been or “the run and shoot is dead” based off of average points scored for two seasons is really dumb.

  76. NorthShoreFan November 4, 2015 2:12 pm

all the comparisons with other programs will do no good. different players, different assistants, different teams etc…relative

  77. jeezy33 November 4, 2015 2:12 pm

Were here hating Hawaii football while SMU has 2 wins in the past 2 years. We have 2 wins this year. Jones is every bit responsible for leaving SMU in the same place it was when he took over.

  78. Come on, man! November 4, 2015 2:15 pm

“Well then… Look at where SMU is from a win loss stand point with millions put into that program vs Hawaii right now… His off field issues and on field product doesn’t scream confidence and commitment.. Sorry.”

jeezy: when looking at his overall body of work at SMU, i would take that any day of the week than what UH is right now.

full disclosure, i actually don’t care if JJ gets hired. i just think there are some really wacky arguments about why he SHOULDN’T be. the whole “defenses have figured out the run and shoot” is also very entertaining to me.

  79. jeezy33 November 4, 2015 2:15 pm

    69. More excuses. Texas Tech doesn’t play defense. And SMU got blown out against North Texas. So forgive me if I lack any compassion for SMUs troubles. You guys are making a lot of excuses for mediocre offenses.

  80. jeezy33 November 4, 2015 2:16 pm

Note to Hawaii fans. Not a lot of defense gets played in the Big 12.

  81. jeezy33 November 4, 2015 2:18 pm

    76. If that is your standards then do you. I’m striving for more with this fresh start.

  82. Come on, man! November 4, 2015 2:21 pm

“Were here hating Hawaii football while SMU has 2 wins in the past 2 years. We have 2 wins this year.”

yeah, but when you look at june jones’s overall body of work, you see 3 bowl wins out of 4 bowl appearances, 3 winning seasons, 1 .500 season, and two losing ones (including 0-2 when he left).

Jeezy, you’re very good at narrowing and broadening the scope when looking at stats to find things to cherry pick and support whatever it is you’re trying to argue. you should be a politician.

“Jones is every bit responsible for leaving SMU in the same place it was when he took over.”

this is obvious. this also isn’t that relevant unless you’re saying that the way June Jones exited forebodes ill things if he gets hired at UH again.

but then you realize that most head coaches leave/get fired with losing records in their last years and then find employment as coaches somewhere else. It’s the nature of the coaching business. the only certain thing about coaching is that you’ll one day lose your job.

  83. 808bowler November 4, 2015 2:24 pm

With woolsey at qb now bailey can run the read option wanted to

  84. Come on, man! November 4, 2015 2:25 pm

“You guys are making a lot of excuses for mediocre offenses.”

    define “mediocre offense.”

also, texas tech isn’t known as a defensive powerhouse, but it’s also a big 12 team. I have my doubts that a norm chow run team would’ve scored points in any significant number against tech, rutgers, or any power 5 conference team.

i’m not saying that SMU was a great team. I’m saying that your reasoning behind saying june jones’s offense is mediocre and look at the last two seasons and this is why he shouldn’t be hired because the run and shoot is mediocre is very thin. you’re just cherry picking statistics and then going “NO. IT’S BLACK AND WHITE. STOP MAKING EXCUSES. WIN OR DIE!!!” (mainly becuase you’re not interested in discussing anything. you’re interested in ‘winning’ internet arguments) without taking into account that coaching, above all else, is about PROCESS.

at the end of the day, it’s bottom line, but you factor into account the process of coaching and the circumstances of the coach and his body of work when looking to hire.

  85. Creative721 November 4, 2015 2:27 pm

The thing that most people don’t realize about SMU is that it’s a private university founded by the United Methodist Church. That basically means that not everyone would be interested in going to such a school in the first place which really limits it’s recruiting to begin with not to mention there are other better Texas schools that any coach that has to recruit for SMU would be competing with for talent that do not have any religious affiliations that blue chip players could go to. In other words, good luck trying to get any Polynesian Mormon players from Hawaii to play for them. I believe it’s because of this limitation that JJ didn’t have as much success as he had at Hawaii. Bring JJ back and some of the talent that goes away to the mainland just may stay home and play for UH if he becomes the head coach.

  86. Come on, man! November 4, 2015 2:32 pm

“That basically means that not everyone would be interested in going to such a school in the first place which really limits it’s recruiting to begin with not to mention there are other better Texas schools that any coach that has to recruit for SMU would be competing with for talent that do not have any religious affiliations that blue chip players could go to.”

lol hold on. let me put on my jeezy hat.

STOP MAKING EXCUSES. EVERYTHING EXISTS IN A VACUUM. BOTTOM LINE IS WINNING. YOU WANT STATS AND PROOF? IN JUNE JONES’ FIRST YEAR, HE WENT 1-11. CHOW ALSO WENT 1-11. DO YOU WANT JUNE CHOW TO COACH THE TEAM?????? I’M RIGHT. GET OVER IT.

*full disclosure: i don’t care if june jones is hired or not. and between JJ and a young up and coming coach that could be successful, i’d rather place my hat with the young guy. because why not? it’s not like this program can get any worse.

  87. RainboWarrior November 4, 2015 2:36 pm

JJ’s offense would do plenty of damage in the mountain west. To say that his offense would no longer prosper today is false. Just look at Washington State, they’re making strides in the pac12 with a similar offense and obviously some Big 12 schools have success with it too.

I do agree that JJ needs to show face more with the locals. His local recruiting wasn’t that great.

  88. Dano November 4, 2015 2:37 pm

coach Naeole may be doing potential coach Jones a big favor by starting Woosley. Like a ‘warm-up’, reacquainting Woosley with the run and shoot once again, as he was originally recruited for. recall that Woolsey is originally a McMackin/Rolo recruit.

  89. DrakeRamore November 4, 2015 2:39 pm

Let me bottom line it so you all can end the argument. Jeezy either really doesn’t like JJ or doesn’t think much of JJ’s ability. We don’t need to argue with him, because we have watched him live and in person and the proof was there on the field.

What I am more perplexed with is why anyone thinks JJ would hire Rolo as an OC. Does anybody remember who JJ OC was while at Hawaii??? I have no clue, and that is because JJ was essentially the OC.

  90. Jeezy33 November 4, 2015 2:44 pm

    80. I’m very good at laying out recent facts that you emotionally attached fans choose to ignore

  91. JustAsking November 4, 2015 2:46 pm

59: Well said Jeezy. Experience is always valuable, but our last coach had a lifetime of experience working under countless head coaches. And he admitted he did not foresee the full scope of HC responsibilities. And strong coordinators have a hard time giving up that role when they become HC. Sometimes it works, many times it does not.

  92. Jeezy33 November 4, 2015 2:47 pm

    82. I’m interested in finding the right coach. You’re the one responding to all my reason why Jones isn’t a good candidate and I keep throwing facts at you and you’re getting bitter.

I’ll repeat, this is a what have you done for me lately business. I don’t care what you did years ago. South Carolina seems to agree with me too.

  93. Jeezy33 November 4, 2015 2:49 pm

It’s not about the run n shoot not working. It’s about JJ inability to adapt in a evolving sport which isn’t working. He’s shown a lack of commitment and. It’s better not to hire someone ready to retire.

  94. Come on, man! November 4, 2015 2:50 pm

great rebuttal, jeezy. and i’m not emotionally attached to june jones. but the arguments being put across against him.

    geez louis!

although this is the most entertaining one to me. yours are weird but just annoying because you keep throwing random numbers that suit what you’re trying to say then going “STOP IT. NO EXCUSES. I’M RIGHT.” it’s exhausting reading your stuff.

but anyway, this is the most entertaining one:
“defenses have solved the run and shoot!”

oh yeah? tell me more. schematically, what are defenses doing that are making the run and shoot (june jones flavor) NOT a viable offense? wait. first of all, tell me what the run and shoot offense is (aside from one back, shotgun, 4WR)?

    *crickets.

  95. islandman November 4, 2015 2:50 pm

Jones was a candidate for the UNLV job in December of 2014, that went to Tony Sanchez.

  96. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 4, 2015 2:52 pm

I agree with what bruddah Al said above.

However, I have a feeling that the pick is in and all this stuff with accepting applications and what not is just to ensure we are complying with state hiring rules.

Guess we will see what the RnS can do for us in 2016.

  97. cheepono November 4, 2015 2:52 pm

again, not advocating for jj but in his 196 career games as head coach, his teams averaged 32 pts/game. in 47 career games as head coach, chow’s teams averaged a whopping 20 pts/game.

  98. Jeezy33 November 4, 2015 2:52 pm

Random numbers?. What is random about SMU scoring output lately and lack of wins? What numbers shall I use in a results based business?

  99. Creative721 November 4, 2015 2:53 pm

@Come on, man!: My other point is that for SMU, even UH has a recruiting advantage and if you think about it, JJ’s primary recruiting areas were in Hawaii and California (which is basically negated by working for SMU since no Mormon or non-religious player would go there), so the fact that JJ even got them to a winning record at all during his 7 years there says a lot about his coaching skills. JJ’s first year in Hawaii during his first go around went 9-4 and that was with basically the same players that Von Appen had that went 0-12 the year before speaks volumes. LOL! With that said, if JJ doesn’t get the job, I just hope they find someone that runs a similar offense that scores a bunch of points every week.

  100. Come on, man! November 4, 2015 2:54 pm

“It’s not about the run n shoot not working. It’s about JJ inability to adapt in a evolving sport which isn’t working. ”

bad argument. you still haven’t convincingly laid out why anyone should believe you aside from the win/loss record of the last two years of his tenure in a vacuum.

“He’s shown a lack of commitment”
    to SMU, yes.

” and. It’s better not to hire someone ready to retire.”

this makes sense. good god. you are making SENSE! yes, i would rather see a young up and coming coach hired for these reasons. but not for any reason like “june jones can’t adapt in an evolving game” or “the run and shoot has been figured out.” those are just spectacularly dumb arguments that’s based on people just thinking they know what they’re talking about and believing what they say.

  101. Jeezy33 November 4, 2015 2:54 pm

    94. Since we’re talking career stats, can we pull Chows career at BYU ? I really don’t care what coaches did 5 years ago but career is a pretty broad word

  102. JustAsking November 4, 2015 2:57 pm

Recent performance is relevant. Otherwise, you end up hearing player comparisons to a star pupil from 4 jobs ago.

  103. george November 4, 2015 2:57 pm

I do think the one fault Chow had was that he was too nice a guy and too nice to his players. he was like a father/grandfather.
the team has more pressure this week than last week. If they turn things around in one week it makes me wonder what the players and coaches have been doing all this time – telling us they were playing for each other and doing their best?
so, I guess it’s time for you all to start bashing Wittik. Last year it was Woolsey. Pathetic.

  104. DrakeRamore November 4, 2015 2:58 pm

    100. No, you only want to look at JJ last 2 years at SMU, so you can’t look at Chow BYU years where he was not even the HC. Be consistent.

  105. azwarrior22 November 4, 2015 3:05 pm

Wow, all this JJ talk is polarizing. I personally like JJ and I think he will bring back re-newed fan interest in the Warrior brand of football and maybe he’s already recruiting locally since word is that he’s been attending a lot of high school games.

  106. Come on, man! November 4, 2015 3:05 pm

here’s something interesting, if we’re just going strictly off of win-loss records for coaching hires (which people who actually hire don’t do, btw, but internet forum people love to do).

In the NFL, pete carroll only had a losing season with the jets and was fired. then he was hired by the pats and had only two winning seasons with the patriots and then fired again.

ignoring all the NCAA bullcrap that occurred, you can’t say that pete carroll’s USC teams and now seattle seahawks teams weren’t extraordinarily successful.

but based on “WHAT IS YOUR WIN/LOSS RECORD? I DONT’ CARE ABOUT HISTORY, I CARE ABOUT WHAT IT IS NOW!,” should pete carroll have been given an opportunity at any other coaching job?

  107. mytake November 4, 2015 3:08 pm

    UH should hire Pet Hamilton

  108. cappie the dog November 4, 2015 3:17 pm

So exhausting, this speculation about the next coach.

These final four games are like an afterthought.

For the good of Chris Naeole’s coaching future, I hope he wins as many games as possible.

  109. Former UH Athlete November 4, 2015 3:19 pm

The best reason UH should hire Jones is get ticket sales up. He’s the only candidate people are buzzing over and locals tend to gravitate heavily to old successes, even if more recent facts say otherwise.

Other than that, the thing I question is Jones’ internal commitment to the program and players. If things don’t go well the first few years, is he going to hit the ejection seat and quit?

The other issue that I see is that his style of offense is not as effective as it used to be. Since more teams feature the spread, June’s old RnS has become less effective as defenses have adapted to covering multiple spread looks. He’s adapted it slightly but there were several seasons at SMU where it was not working well. In fact, JJ has a losing record at SMU. People here seem to ignore that.

  110. SteveM November 4, 2015 3:23 pm

Many people bring up that JJ left Hawaii to go to SMU. Many of us hear witnessed it and blogged about it. Ten years ago I opined that ST would someday write a book about it–“The Once and Future Coach”. Might have to wait now.

We blame Herman Frazier for not getting a new contract ready in time, but I think that is not the whole story. HF was an arrogant, pompous ass and JJ practically guranteed his firing by not returning. The soap and toilet paper incidents of 2007–yes, 2007 were not problems but there was virtually nothing done in facility improvement. So if I was JJ, I’d rationalize:

    1. I came in 1999 and tied one of the greatest NCAA won-loss turnarounds in history.
    2. The lower campus football facilities look the same (no new locker room, no Ching field, etc.) and will not change anytime soon.
    3. I took Hawaii undefeated to the Sugar Bowl, with the existing facilities and resources I had.
    4. The fans and $ people are going to expect to go again–and if no Rose Bowl in 3 years I’m going to be fired.
    5. The SMU deal looks good. Big bucks and they haven’t gone to bowl game in 25 years–after being SMU’D…of course, I might have to suit up the students (see Creative721’s #83)
    6. OK, I took SMU to 2 bowl games setting another NCAA benchmark…what do now… I need another momentous challenge

The meanderings above are my rationalizations. Not JJ’s!!!!

  111. Come on, man! November 4, 2015 3:25 pm

“June’s old RnS has become less effective as defenses have adapted to covering multiple spread looks.”

tell me more. specifically. what are they doing that is making the JJ run and shoot less effective? you can draw up plays on a napkin and post them on imgur, if you want.

“He’s adapted it slightly but there were several seasons at SMU where it was not working well.”

    like how?

“In fact, JJ has a losing record at SMU. People here seem to ignore that.”

he has two losing seasons and a .500 season. the rest of the winning seasons were something like 7-6 or 7-5. the thing that really skewed the win/loss was his first season where he went 1-11 (which was expected). but if you look at where the team was at before and the process of it, he did very well.

  112. tangomike November 4, 2015 3:28 pm

It’s amazing how polarizing June Jones is, in a community where he took the home team to it’s first and only BCS bowl.

this statement is not in support of June Jones, nor is it against June Jones, but there’s no denying you either love him or hate him. Interesting.

  113. Former UH Athlete November 4, 2015 3:32 pm

I’m definitely not on the Miano bandwagon either. Just too many question marks for me…

The biggest thing I question is why hasn’t he been coaching at the college level the past several years? Yes he loves the islands; yes he’s a good motivator; yes he knows local prep recruits through his successful camps, but he’s not coaching full time. Running camps is not a something that qualifies you to run an entire NCAA FBS program with its budget, and all other off field responsibilities, which by the way he’s never done before full time.

Which leads me to my second concern. This isn’t really Miano’s fault, but would Matlin hire another first time head coach (one year at Kaiser doesn’t count) after two straight failed ones?

Third concern that Matlin would have to vet is why Miano left Kaiser after one season? He did well at Kaiser, but why is not still there or gotten to a better coaching job? Not exactly a good spot for a coaching resume with such a short stint.

  114. NotNasti November 4, 2015 3:33 pm

FYI: Miano burned his bridges with the Hawaii high school coaches during his time at Kaiser. When they won the DII championship, none of his players were voted onto the all-star team. If he is on staff, as head coach or as an assistant, coaches will steer their players away from UH. With JJ, Jeezy’s cogent points on his offensive prowess aside, two other issues must be addressed. His inability and/or willingness to recruit (out-recruit other programs) athletes, and his character must be satisfactorily vetted out.

  115. Manoa Mist November 4, 2015 3:37 pm

Man I ain’t worried about the next coach. I got no say anyway. Whoever it is I’ll back ’em up. Chow had to go so I happy about that. I like to keep things simple. Matlin pick. Me support. The End.

  116. GoBows_now November 4, 2015 3:37 pm

Past is past, forgive & forget, move on already!! GO BOWS!!

  117. Former UH Athlete November 4, 2015 3:39 pm

106.. They actually drew the plays on an etch a sketch…

  118. mytake November 4, 2015 3:45 pm

The reason why high school coaches didn’t like Miano is because he took no prisoners. His sole focus was on winning. If that meant stepping on toes and luring players out of district because they only offered advanced lauhala basket weaving at Kaiser so be it. He follows the Patriots philosophy of “If you aint cheatin you aint tryin”. Thats called focus. I still would puck JJ.

  119. AdmrVT November 4, 2015 3:47 pm

FUA #104. Actually, in the latter years, I believe JJ brought in Hal Mumme and transitioned to the Air Raid system, which developed from Lavell Edwards’ passing game at BYU. So, the results of the last few years does not reflect JJ’s RnS.

Like all offensive & defensive systems, they come and go like fads, but it depends on the adjustments that are made, and what personnel that you have.

  120. Dano November 4, 2015 3:50 pm

Coach Jones not only knows the run and shoot. He was also a QB coach with Dick Tomey’s pro-style offense (R. Cherry’s QB coach), although Cherry was athletically more suited to the run and shoot. Tomey’s pro-set offense during those years was pretty effective, but then our O-Line had some great players too, with likes of CSUF AD Jim Donovan, Jesse Sapolu, Joe Onosai, and even Kaua’i county Mayor Bernard Cravalho.

  121. Former UH Athlete November 4, 2015 3:55 pm

I’m not going to give my favorite until we know who’s actually applied. I’m not sure how much Matlin will give updates on the candidate pool.

I just have concerns over the popular local choices dominating the chatter.

So far, I like how Matlin is progressing. He’s the first UH official to actually take responsibility in anything. He took responsibility for firing Norm and he’s taking responsibility for the outcome of his next FB Coach. I like it.

It’s just too bad that he has to keep the salary under $500k in order to avoid getting the BOR involved and the dreaded search committee.

In my opinion, no matter who gets hired, Matlin must pay near the top end of the range or increase the pay for the assistants. I think Matlin can get away with going cheap for a coach, but UH’s position coach pay is so poor, it prohibits a lot of qualified mainland coaches simply because they are going to have to pinch pennies to pay for rent/car/food/etc. Everybody knows how damn expensive housing is nowadays.

Shoot, even the coordinators will have a hard time buying a place with only $120k or less. Not that they would commit to or even qualify for buying a place on year by year contracts.

  122. mytake November 4, 2015 3:57 pm

JJ taught the spread to St Louis. It then spread to other high school teams. Thats probably why Hawaii high schools has no tight ends. Forget about running the 2 TE sets.

  124. Ala Wai November 4, 2015 4:14 pm

Interesting comment by Colt Brennan and his choice for a HC successor in Reardon’s blog. The biggest star of Jones’ nine-year coaching tenure mentioned younger options.
“Miano or Nick Rolovich,” said Colt Brennan, who was third in the Heisman Trophy voting in 2007. “Either one I think would be an amazing fit and be great for Hawaii. If I had my way, both.”

    Players know.

  125. Come on, man! November 4, 2015 4:17 pm

    “Players know.”

yeah, but a bunch of other players also voted for june jones. too bad colt brennan didnt’ explain his reasons.

  126. cocobean November 4, 2015 4:17 pm

FUHA. I’ve been all in with Matlin since the Ganot hire. He showed he’s his own man when he bucked public sentiment and the wishes of many longtime BB supporters who were pushing for Benji. I think he’s capable of getting the BOR to go along with paying more for the right person. I believe he can be persuasive in a we can’t afford not to discussion. Remember he found a way to get some funds for cost of attendance payments.

#112. And you’re okay if our next head coach cheats, as long as he wins and is not caught? And if he gets caught and UH is sanctioned?

  130. seewhy November 4, 2015 4:55 pm

Tell me again how that worked out for the UH BB? Smh.

    Stephen,

How has the energy at practice been the past few days with Naeole at the helm?

  132. oneseason November 4, 2015 5:18 pm

IMO, the recipe for ticket sales success is to …
    1) consistently win the MWC West Division.
    2) not be embarrassed by the MWC Mountain Division.
    3) attract PAC12/other power conference opponents to Aloha Stadium and play them competitively.
    4) be exciting both in offense (scoring) and defense (causing turnovers).
    5) consistently be bowl eligible.
    6) keep up the good work on punting and field goals.
The funding for the head coach, coaching staff, and facilities needs to be sufficient to accomplish that. The funding should not be a problem for Hawaii’s flagship university/campus. It wouldn’t bother me if the AD brought in a person that might leave after elevating the program. That happens elsewhere and (I think) is preferable to limiting your options. Once the program is winning again, attracting another good coach should be less of a problem.

  133. kahuna November 4, 2015 5:23 pm

My guess is Colt likes Rolo or Rich because with either coach, Brennan has a chance to be on the staff. With JJ being the OC and QB coach, Brennan has zero chance.

  134. oneseason November 4, 2015 5:29 pm

#120 … that is one perspective on “being your own man”. However, considering that all indications were that UH did not want to retain Coach Taylor prior to UH hiring AD Matlin, the best I could say is that he chose not to retain the coach that the public wanted … and the public wanted him because (IMO) he lead the team to the conference finals. Maybe the public didn’t know all the details, or maybe it was the type of smear campaign that AD Donovan got, but the proof of the pudding will be how well Coach Ganot performs. Not long to wait on that.

    117…

    Good link!

I to am glad that Lily put in her post and confirmed that she doesn’t even know Coach Jones personally.

“If I say it never happened, which it didn’t (I don’t even know Coach Jones personally), there will be crazies out there who will still think whatever they want”.

That right there is what she needed to say…because just saying “it isn’t true” wouldn’t have stopped people from believing her, unfortunately….Hard to come out and say you don’t know someone as famous as Jones, especially when you were almost as famous as him during the same time in Hawaii…Surely someone would have been able to confirm it as a lie, if it wasn’t true….Glad she said it.

Btw…another extension of the rumor coincidence was her going back to Texas and that is another reason why Jones left for SMU was to be closer to their child.

I am soooo glad this is finally over…at least for me.

    God Bless and Aloha Lily.

I wonder whether the years away have given JJ more awareness of vibes around him. The changes he made to the team and on the field were effective. Some of the other off-the-field decrees were heavy-handed and did not go over well with the community at the time. Sometimes it wasn’t the “what” so much as the “how.” Has that changed?

His abrupt departure had two impacts. The political one was a big contribution to Frazier’s ouster. But the one that worries me moving forward is the impact on the team and coaching staff because of how the knowledge came out back then.

So, sincerely, kudos to him that he wants to be considered for coming back and helping revive the team. But I would hope that Matlin asks him and every other candidate some direct questions about off-the-field traditions, community-building, local recruiting, and about not parting ways until the postseason is over. (I realize the last one is hard, especially coming from a school that just let its coach go midseason.)

  139. Hank November 4, 2015 5:52 pm

The louder the Bipolar rants against JJ being our next Coach … the better I think his chances are.

Personally, my choice would be Dino Babers.

  140. Hank November 4, 2015 5:53 pm

Let’s not forget that JJ wanted to sign before the 2007 season started, but our fearless leader Herman Frazier didn’t want too. JJ was willing to sign for less than he was getting.

  141. justsomeguy November 4, 2015 5:55 pm

Junes Jones is a flat out LAZY recruiter…….you think Chow was bad? JJ is worse. Even in his three really good years he was unable to pull even ONE major donor to the Hawaii football program….not ONE. That is a HC’s number one job, raise money. JJ has already proven he cannot, and when he had a boat load of Oil money handed to him at SMU he squandered that too. I’m sorry folks, your loyalty is endearing, but it will get Hawaii football NOWHERE.

Until upper campus approves a REALISTIC competitive budget for the program we will not have another winning season. That’s all there is too it.

  142. Casual Observer November 4, 2015 5:57 pm

Just wondering: How much do public high school school coaches earn? If Miano left because he could double or triple his income, wouldn’t that be reason enough?

The Warriors could have won every MW game they played if the offense showed up. After all, they opened the season by beating a Pac 12 team. But the offense never showed up, never showed consistency, tenacity, or creativity. One reason, it seems UH is easily defended. Rarely do you see a wide open receiver like the long pass Air Force made where the receiver was totally unaccounted for. UH receivers always seem to have a defender in their face. Play calling and design is part of the answer.

  144. Maddog50 November 4, 2015 6:08 pm

Hank I predicted Babers will be in Orange/ blue/White next year. Illinois, not far from BG, up the road from Eastern Illinois. It will not take a lot to put them on the map. T hey always have a lot of talent Zook Tepper and others could not put it together. They will buy him out and boost him. Got it from good Illinois source the next HC will be him or someone like him.

Watched the pregame interviews for UNLV. First Coach Naoele is my kind of guy. The more I see of Kennedy the more I like that kid-smile that won’t die energy and very and I mean very well spoken. Fine young man-

  145. pokesquid November 4, 2015 6:08 pm

Things could easily fall into place for JJ:

If JJ is hired 1/2 of the problem with his staff is possibly solved by him deciding to keep the current defensive staff on board…I mean, they all know him, played for him and coached with him.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if JJ did this…I mean DC Mason was his DC at SMU…Elimimian and Samuseva played for him…Gouveia has the top level and championship experience and knowledge on all football levels.

Keeping the current defensive staff would keep the continuity and familiarity on that side of the ball, which is very important since JJ is an offensive guy.

Just a note: If he was to bring back Mac, instead for DC, a 3rd time…I would be all for that as well.

    BOOM: 1/2 the problem solved.

As for the offensive side we could get Timmy Chang to be the QB coach (cause we know Jones will call the plays)…we could get someone like Stutzman to be the WR coach…And my choice is to keep Naeole for the OL.

Just a note: I say Chang instead of Rolo because Chang was with Jones at SMU and I believe Chang has a closer relationship to Jones than Rolo does…Plus Chang has more name recognition than Rolo does…which could help to land that next big time passing QB.

BOOM: the other 1/2 of the problem solved.

Lastly…maybe Miano can be hired to run the special teams and continue to work with the walk-ons at the same time.

BOOM: Right there problem solved and situation with staff solved before Jan 1st.

Now on to RECRUIT, RECRUIT, RECRUIT!

  147. cocobean November 4, 2015 6:13 pm

#127. Of course it’s just how one person perceives Matlin. I posted several days back that I really liked Matlin and cited the same example. I also said he probably laid his job on the line with that hire. I predicted Matlin would take ownership of finding a new football coach, another job on the line decision.

I’m in no way saying he made the right call on Ganot or will make the right call on the his next hire. I just like his style and the way he handles himself in public. My next statement is going to sound pretty ridiculous but here it is…..in my gut I feel he’s Dick Tomeyesque in his leadership style.

  148. pokesquid November 4, 2015 6:24 pm

    134..

Jones doesn’t need to be a good recruiter…he just needs to be “the Closer” on good recruits.

That is something not everyone, especially non-proven..no-name HC’s, find hard to do.

Jones is a proven named commodity and that’s advantage.

    141. That is entirely wrong.

If you for even a second think Saban, Meyer, Chizik, Miles, Dantonio, Helfrich, Sumlin, Freeze, hell even Niumatalolo or Babers aren’t personally recruiting at every chance they get…….you are so very very wrong. Recruiting is the second most important aspect of College football. Behind fundraising, and if you think any coach at ANY successful school isn’t recruiting at every possible moment you are sadly mistaken.

  154. pokesquid November 4, 2015 6:54 pm

I am not saying that he doesn’t need to recruit…but you are making it sound like he is the only one who needs to recruit ALL the players.

If you think that Saban, Meyer, Chizik, Miles, Dantonio, Helfrich, Sumlin, Freeze, hell even Niumatalolo or Babers are doing ALL the recruiting and traveling all over the nation and making all the calls to players, by themselves, then you are mistaken.

Those guys do talk and communicate with the players…yes….But most times those talks are to “OPEN” but more importantly to “CLOSE” the players.

You have a staff who does the main leg work of recruiting and evaluation..not to mention a lot of services that assist in player evaluations.

When you say he’s LAZY…..What do you mean by that kind of statement?….Specify what you mean by LAZY….To lazy to call a player….To lazy to watch film on a player?….To lazy to make a house call to a players home?

What do you mean, specifically about him being LAZY?

You made the statement about him being a LAZY recruiter…so please give us some facts and details about it.

  156. NotNasti November 4, 2015 6:54 pm

The sorry state of UH football is such that this blog has had more action and interest on it after the team was been eliminated from post-season play, guaranteed a losing record, and (head) coach-less than when the season still had some promise.

    106. Come on man has a hard time comprehending. Does he not understand what not adapting means? Meaning he changed nothing from what we ran at Hawaii. If you don’t remember our offense then I can’t help you. When you cannot adapt week to week, the game passes you by. Chow admitted it had been too difficult to adapt to preparing for the Spread offense one week, the triple option the next in the MW.

Is Joel Fischer a real UH professor emeritus?

That is where I initially got my information about the topic I thought we were never supposed to talk about.

  161. A-House November 4, 2015 7:13 pm

why are so many posters fixated on JJ doing the RnS if he is selected as the HC?

didn’t many say that he was a student of the game and if so one would think that he has already “tinkered” with his offensive schemes after watching all the NFL games who utilize an “option” of the RnS scheme?

did you guys talk with him? did JJ tell people he will bring back the RnS?

I did not like the way JJ exited UH during the Sugar Bowl.

I do NOT have any opinion of who should be selected – let Matlin decide and let’s move from there — especially in supporting the players!

  162. pokesquid November 4, 2015 7:46 pm

I don’t understand how people can go on thinking that Coach Jones is going to run the same exact offense he ran here or at SMU.

Sure it will still be the same 4 WR set with one back and shotgun QB…but to say or even think that he won’t be smart enough to have come up with some new twist, schemes, plays, etc. etc. etc. is absolutely ridiculous.

Guys like Jones always have shit up their sleeves and they always have new innovations in their minds…I think this time off from coaching has actually helped him to watch how college football has been evolving…Sometimes when you are in the action you are to close and can get narrow or blinded by what you only know.

The time off, I believe has allowed him the opportunity to gather information and further knowledge on how he can create and plan a “new and improved” version of his offense.

Guys like Coach Jones can never get away from the game completely and he has not, as one poster stated that he is at games and at St Louis…I mean, what better place to test out some new schemes and wrinkles for his offense than at St Louis.

And that makes me seriously go….Hmmmmmmm.

  163. keleguenbinadu November 4, 2015 7:49 pm

Matlin said that he was looking for a CEO type of coach, this comment convinced me that he’ll choose carefully the right guy, whether we initially agree or not.

For example, Miano is not first on my shortlist but of the “realistic” candidates he fits this requirement rather well. From recruiting, to the walk-on program, to the speed and quickness program, and yes even his stint at Kaiser, he organized those groups to successful outcomes. I’m not sold on him as a DC but I think he can put together a good staff, and manage the administrative, public, political, and personnel challenges that face the team year in and year out.

I don’t mind if JJ get’s the job. It’s an instant boost to the program if he does. I like that he goes by his on beat, can be controversial and outspoken, willing to go against the grain, but I can’t help but think if it’s all a publicity strategy. I like what he did for the program, if he can repeat it, then we can share in that success.

Top of my shortlist are successful up and comers, and have already been mentioned extensively. I’d really wish that the media can get some interviews with the rumored candidates to get their ideas for the program. Won’t happen though given the nature of the process.

Here’s to hoping that whomever Matlin picks, whether most hate, most love, or a little of both, translates to success on the field.

  164. justsomeguy November 4, 2015 7:50 pm

I attended UH when JJ was the HC, my roommates where linebackers and offensive lineman on the team. JJ did VERY little of the recruiting, this is coming straight from the players, a many of whom I knew in at least an acquaintance capacity. Football being an incredible passion of mine, especially Hawaii football, that’s more or less all we’d ever talk about.

He only got even close to a full recruiting class once or twice while at Hawaii, and like I said many of those recruits ( if not all some years) came from Lee brothers and position coaches. The same rings true at SMU…. he benefited GREATLY from two superstar recruiters in Adriam Klemm and Jeff Reinbold (who is responsible for bringing Ryan Mouton, Vaughn Meatoga, Kenny Graham, and Ray Hisatake to UH in 07’…. all those players in one swoop and McMackin couldn’t get him to stay because JJ knew he NEEDED Jeff)

He puts very little effort into recruiting himself….which is an ENORMOUS red flag in 21st century collegiate football. At a time when the powers of social media and those recruiting services increase the reach of the major programs exponentially, to stay competitive you have to search deeeeeeeeeeeeeep into high school football to find the gems, JJ just doesn’t have that drive or frankly the ability anymore.

His time has come and gone. We should remember and honor the great years he brought to us (along with his staff) and let the past be the past.

It’s nearly 1am here. I need to sleep.

  165. pokesquid November 4, 2015 7:51 pm

    134…justsomeguy

Still waiting for your specific details about how Jones is as you say…”a flat out LAZY recruiter”…worse than Chow.

Surely someone who makes a statement like that can enlighten us.

  166. Jeezy33 November 4, 2015 8:00 pm

    158. It’s pretty well known that Jones is a lazy recruiter. But the guy could evaluate enough offensively that it still worked out. If you followed recruiting through the years, Jones rarely maintained contact with his prospects in comparison to other schools. Didn’t take many visits outside the island. Need to remember that lot of the good guys we got were 2nd chance guys or guys that were being recruited that June saw something good in them. It would be nice to combine a relentless recruiter with a good evaluator. But if I had to choose, evaluating is a lot more important. Jones evaluated pretty good when it came to QBs, WRs. Miano walk on program deserved just as much credit though.

  167. Come on, Man! November 4, 2015 8:06 pm

“106. Come on man has a hard time comprehending. Does he not understand what not adapting means? Meaning he changed nothing from what we ran at Hawaii. ”

jeezy. you betray your ignorance right here. the run and shoot that june jones ran in SMU is different than the run and shoot he ran in hawaii, must notably through the influence of hiring hal mumme as his offensive coordinator. they used a lot of run and shoot concepts, and kept the base shotgun 4 wide reciever formations, but incorporated a lot of air raid, as well. gaps between linemen were different, incorporation of drag routes and the mesh concept.

christ, jeezy. at this point, you’re just making things up just to be right.

the truth is, you DON’T know that june jones is incapable of adapting his offense week by week to different teams and the different defensive looks they’ll give him because you DON’T know how his offense works (and he’s very tight lipped about a lot of his playbook). and furthermore, you DON’T know how the defense is attacking his version of the run and shoot, because you just don’t know!

so just stop, bro. i’ll concede that UH should probably hire someone young and up and coming. i’ll concede that we have no idea how june jones will pan out (but from past successes he has, we can make a good assumption that he’ll carry us at least back to the hawaii bowl), but stop making things up.

  168. Come on, Man! November 4, 2015 8:10 pm

“Just wondering: How much do public high school school coaches earn? ”

probably around $600 for the season? it’s not very much at all. you don’t coach hawaii high school football for the money. this isn’t texas.

  169. ignaciosaid November 4, 2015 8:10 pm

really don’t want to add my comments (but) steveM/105 – you have some know- ledge , casual obs/135 – good points , pokesquid/138 – very good points (and) don’t believe Rolo can work with Jones. I used to work at UH and just about every morning , I’d run into JJ in the parking garage. He always had good words for his players and of Hawaii. He would never comment about the administration , though. I really believe he left because of how bad the administration IS (anybody have doubts?) I believe he always wanted to finish out in Hawaii!!

  170. Come on, Man! November 4, 2015 8:21 pm

“Still waiting for your specific details about how Jones is as you say…”a flat out LAZY recruiter”…worse than Chow.

Surely someone who makes a statement like that can enlighten us.”

pokesquid: he can’t. because he’s just making things up. some people on this blog don’t really seem to understand that just because you make things up and believe it, doesn’t mean it’s true. justsomeguy has as much knowledge of june jones’ recruiting practices as jeezy does with the x’s and o’s of the run and shoot/air raid/whatever pass wacky spread is out there.

but the weird thing is, although we are ALL casuals on this board (although some of us have played and then coached football in a past life), we like to prognisticate like we are football oracles and we know the processes of certain coaches better than they themselves do.

we even flatter ourselves in thinking that maybe an offensive coordinator will read some comments and be like “good point, random internet guy! i should burn zwahlen’s redshirt year for the last few games of the season! or start some random third stringer instead of our top 2 qbs because why not! all great ideas!”

but really. we are just casuals and fans.

  171. Dano November 4, 2015 8:23 pm

highly likely matlin will pick jones. as executive director of the sheraton hawaii bowl, matlin got jones’ teams to play very frequently. it is likely this successful business relationship will continue.

  172. Come on, Man! November 4, 2015 8:23 pm

although, to be fair, there were a lot of reports coming out of the dallas area about how horrible the recruiting was during june jones’s final years there.

  173. pokesquid November 4, 2015 8:23 pm

    157…

Your roommates told you…Wow….The only thing I worried about when I was in college was booze and broads.

And as I stated to you earlier…If you think that Saban, Meyer, Chizik, Miles, Dantonio, Helfrich, Sumlin, Freeze, hell even Niumatalolo or Babers are doing ALL the recruiting and traveling all over the nation and making all the calls to players, by themselves, then you are mistaken.

HC’s do talk and communicate with the players…yes….But most times those talks are to “OPEN” but more importantly to “CLOSE” the players (ex..a home visit).

You have a staff who does the main leg work of recruiting, following up and evaluation..not to mention a lot of services that assist in player evaluations, videos, ratings, etc.

Many of the players being recruited most times get recruited by assistant coaches…but they don’t usually get all the credit for it…And mainly it is because although they are responsible to do most of the leg work, follow up with the recruits…it is still the HC who has the final say…and it is the HC who gets the credit.

BTW….who do you think was it that recruited Marcus Mariota to go to Oregon?…Kelly didn’t even come to Hawaii…he sent Mark to Hawaii to do it…Is that LAZY of Chip?

  174. Jeezy33 November 4, 2015 8:32 pm

    163.
    1. I’m not and never will be your bro.
    2. You’re ignorant because you ignore facts
    3. I’m not making shit up. Defenses have caught up to June Jones run n shoot. Adding wrinkles from Hal Mumme does not mean he’s running a new offense. Everyone can add a few twists. It doesn’t make it new. The base concepts are the same. His offense has been average. Deal with it.

  175. pokesquid November 4, 2015 8:32 pm

You know recruiting is not just the HCs job to do…Most of the assistants do it..but I remember Darnelle Arceneaux saying that due to the shaky job security in college football makes coaches scared to sometimes take risk on players.

Some times some players pays off and some times they don’t…But I can’t lay all the blame HC…I think recruiting a team effort..which now incorporates using outside ranking/recruiting/evaluation services…And that is also not an 100% guarantee either.

  176. Jeezy33 November 4, 2015 8:37 pm

    http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com/2014/04/smus-june-jones-blames-poor-recruiting-classes-on-subpar-facilities.html/

If he blamed facilities at SMU, I can only imagine what he’ll say at Hawaii

  177. Jeezy33 November 4, 2015 8:39 pm

    168. Obviously it’s not but the HC is in charge of puttin a recruiting plan together and approving who to offer. Once committed, he needs to build and maintain relationships leading up to signing day. Assistants are very important, but the HC never gets a pass

  178. Come on, Man! November 4, 2015 8:50 pm

    “163.
    1. I’m not and never will be your bro.”

    alright, pal.

“2. You’re ignorant because you ignore facts”

just because you say it, doesn’t make it so, pal.

“3. I’m not making shit up. Defenses have caught up to June Jones run n shoot.”

you keep saying this, but you don’t prove it. there are a lot of reasons why scoring could go up or down, especially in a mid major like SMU. maybe the players aren’t very good. maybe the qb isn’t panning out and not understanding the offense (because it really is a complicated offfense requiring the receivers AND the qb to make the right read).

so when you say that “the defenses have caught up to the run and shot” (which people said back in the 90s, when it actually DID catch up and they zone blitzed it out of existence until june jones ran his flavor of it), i’d expect a fairly technical discussion about how they did that. but you can’t provide that because you are don’t know. you are MAKING THIS UP.

i mean, okay. what fundamentally made defenses “catch up” to the run and shoot but not to the air raid? go ahead. i’ll wait.

” Adding wrinkles from Hal Mumme does not mean he’s running a new offense.”

i never said that he’s running a completely NEW offense. you are claiming that he NEVER changed his offense since UH. you are obviously wrong on this.

“The base concepts are the same. ”

i’ll give you a dollar if you can even explain to me the base concepts and assumptions behind the run and shoot without using google.

“His offense has been average. Deal with it.”

i never said that his offense was scoring 80 points a game in a pointsplosion of football. you also don’t define “average.” you also don’t explain why “average” is bad.

lol okay, i’m sorry. i take the “bros” and the “pals” back. that was very petty but fun for me. i apologize.

  179. Willie November 4, 2015 8:56 pm

JJ did a lot to put Hawaii in the National spotlight with the historic turnaround and that awesome 12-0 season. His offense was exciting and dynamic.

What has bothered me is that he knew he was leaving before the BCS Sugar Bowl showdown with Georgia. It showed, he did not look like he was in the game, his mind elsewhere. Don’t believe he gave his all coordinating the offense that day. Plus he left the cupboard bare, recruiting dropped off substantially.

Will it be different this time if he gets the shot? Who knows. Fall from grace at SMU and rug pulled out at ASU. Whoever is chosen will be better than the archaic and stubborn Chow factor. Just hoping that Matlin truly can make the call on his own and that he makes the right one. 3+ years of futility and embarrassment is much too long. All the best to Coach Naole and the Warriors for the reminder of this season.

  180. mytake November 4, 2015 8:59 pm

I’m pretty sure the HC only visits the highly rated recruits. Everyone else gets a visit from an assistant.

  181. Come on, Man! November 4, 2015 9:03 pm

look, for whatever reason, people seem to be very invested in justifying their weird opinions. so let me explain what exactly i’m disagreeing with.

I DON’T disagree with the notion that maybe UH should hire a young up and coming coach.

I DON’T disagree with the notion that just because june jones was successful before doesn’t mean he’ll be successful again (although, i’m more inclined to believe he’ll actually turn the program around to being a decent mid major than flaming out and dropping a bomb on the bus that norm chow drove off a cliff and burned).

what i disagree with is when people say weird things like “defenses figured out the run and shoot because of all the spread offenses out there (but curiously, they haven’t figure out the air raid)!” or “june jones has never adapted his offense and won’t be able to in today’s era!” <– this is particularly funny because i'm assuming none of us knows june jones personally or played for him or coached with him. so we try to infer based on whatever statistics or just S.W.A.G. (simple wild assed guessing) about whether or not he can or cannot adapt. basically, people are painting him like a football caveman.

i think it's silly. let's have some humility here. we know what we know. some know more than others. but let's not take ourselves so seriously that we think our half informed opinions came straight down from the football gods.

what would be really cool is if ST did an AMA format on this blog and had june jones or someone answer these questions. then people can have at least something to base things off of aside from proclaiming "june jones has never changed his offense" and then shifting goal posts to "june jones has never implemented an entirely NEW offense!" just on the ego driven need to be right on the internet.

  182. cappie the dog November 4, 2015 9:05 pm

    Wow.

    War of words.

It’s not as if Fred Von Appen is coming back to coach.

As previously stated by FUHA, the best reason to hire June Jones is attendance.

And, by the way, how many years constitute nostalgia.

It has only been eight years.

Nostalgia, for me, is wishing that David Byrne would bury the hatchet with Tina Weymouth and Jerry Harrison, and record another Talking Heads album. Their last one was in 1988.

    “Tsai-ko Killer”.

Great song from “Talking Heads ’77”.

  183. mytake November 4, 2015 9:10 pm

JJ is a smart guy. I’ll bet he has some new wrinkles to his O. Some of you guys think he’s going to run the same things from 10 years ago. Your not giving him enough credit.

  184. Derek November 4, 2015 9:33 pm

In the end, we will rally behind whoever is selected. We have no choice. I didn’t like the Chow hire. I didn’t like the Arnold hire. Ganot, I don’t know but I think he’ll run a clean program. As far as the winning part, we will see. For football, all I know is that we have to score a lot of points to have a chance to win. A good offense helps the defense and vice versa. You can’t expect a winning season in one year. The first part is to be competitive and respectable, then build solid recruiting classes and get better each suceeding years. Build a good foundation. It starts with finding some good QBs who are very efficient. If we had a good QB now we would have won the New Mexico and Nevada games, maybe even the SD State game too. Because we don’t our defense get worn out and eventually break down. It’s a fine line, but that one key position makes all the difference in the world. For that I fault Chw for that. I hope the new Coach can deliver the next Holy Grail QB for our program. It’s all about moving the chains and scoring. Period.

  185. hitmanhart November 4, 2015 10:00 pm

Jizum I mean Jeezy. U Sound like a bitter person. Run n Shoot works with accurate QB’s and good hand receivers with a few good OL. Simple. Think JJ did a great job at SMU. Difficult to win at religious schools on top of high academic standards.

  191. pokesquid November 4, 2015 10:37 pm

I don’t know about you guys but I would love to see Beau Reilly play…I only seen his HS videos and he looks like an exciting QB….Why not give him his chance and then we can evaluate his performance and give him some game experience.

I mean the guy is going to be here another 3 and half years….I don’t completely understand why we keep going back to Woosley…Is it to win games or to possibly save your job?…To late for that.

I think the only guy possibly safe on the offense is Naeole…Woosley had his chances many times and now we should give Reilly his shot…If he can’t handle it, you can always go back to Woosley.

I mean the guy was around practicing all last season, redshirting…and also this season…so I believe he earned a chance.

  193. Kryon November 4, 2015 10:41 pm

177 & 183-yes his offense has changed from 10yrs ago, just look at 2yrs ago at smu. He is so smart that he blamed recruiting here on facilities and no money. That when he was at smu he said the samething, while standing in a new upgraded athletic facility that coated millions of dollars.
Gotta agree with jeezy, that we fans need to focus on the future. Not dwell in the past. JJ got lucky with Brennan. Went to the sugar bowl n got destroyed there. That success will never ever happen again. No matter who the coach is. So why not move forward and find a new flavor? We all know what JJ would bring, let’s try something new. JJ is just a bad choice. I personally don’t like HC who always blame their results on others n or things. Getting paid big money so take ownership. Couldnt recruit at smu bcuz of facilities. Lame. Couldnt recruit at smu bcuz I thought the talent would just come to me is more like it.
People, you don’t wonder y no other program went calling for him these past 2yrs? N why he is only watching football? Makes me wonder. N makes me c that his time has passed.

  194. Former UH Athlete November 4, 2015 10:49 pm

    185. I’m intrigued by Reilly also. He’s a totally unknown quality at this point. i think Zwahlen will stay on the bench to preserve his redshirt year to give him 4 years to win the starting job.

I think Reilly will get a shot if Woosley struggles to move the offense the next couple games. Since another losing season guaranteed with 4 games left, there’s lots of games left to start giving guys chances if they are fit to play.

  198. kev-1 November 4, 2015 11:26 pm

There have been a lot of great points made here today about the JJ debate. There is definitely weight to both sides.

Regardless of what you think about the success of his type of offense in today’s college football or his ability to adjust or not, the one thing that is pretty hard to argue with is how well JJ marketed the program while he was here.

I’m not saying that he was perfect, but he knew how to sell his program on the national stage. I don’t think he maybe had the best record on national TV (I think those woes have followed UH forever), but he definitely presented a nice package of what UH football was.

I think there are a lot of people that feel bringing that type of attention to the program is crucial. These are unknowns for up and coming coaches. They may have better ideas in terms of marketing, etc.

But JJ maximized (maybe not created, but..) the idea that UH was Polynesia’s team. Hair flying out of the helmet. Not always the best D, but always hard hitting. An offense that always had the potential to put up points quickly (sometimes did, sometimes didn’t), etc. In one word, at leas UH football was RELEVANT at the mid-major level.

  199. kev-1 November 4, 2015 11:29 pm

I used to be intrigued by Reilly, but the coaches, even when Chow was here, never even utter his name as a potential go to guy. You get the impression that he is just around as an emergency QB to preserve the redshirt of Zwhalen. Really, the kid never seems to get consideration. And as bad as the #1 and #2 QB have played this year, he must be pretty behind the curve to not even get a look.

  200. pokesquid November 4, 2015 11:43 pm

    187…

What Jones did for Hawaii was amazing…yes he left us…but think others responded to the reasons why he did it…And beside the other things, if I was him and I brought Hawaii the Sugar Bowl…I would also leave and capitalize on what I accomplished.

As far as your other comments….

There is no money and patience is thin to focus on the future right now….We need fast results and a proven HC with a proven system to build us back up FAST!

June Jones can do this for many reasons already listed by others above.

We didn’t get lucky with Brennan…Brennan got lucky with us when he got a 2nd chance to play football.

We went to the Sugar Bowl and got destroyed…Big deal and no shame in that as it was against the #5 team in the land with NFL talent across the board…who also plays in the SEC.

That success will never happen again…maybe not…Right now the people of Hawaii don’t care…All we want right now is to get back to respectability FAST and play in our own Hawaii Bowl.

So why not move forward and find a new flavor?…Well we are moving forward…As for new flavor…I think with JJ we have a new, improved, maturer flavor who will be on a mission to right our sinking ship…FAST!

Seems like you are blaming JJ for everything that happened at SMU like you were there…Thats interesting.

I don’t care what other programs are doing…But I will tell you right now…in Hawaii and Hawaii football JJ is still very relevant and that is all that matters.

I don’t think his time has past…not one bit…I believe Chows time has past with his old school football…If you look around Coach Jones offense and the type of offense he runs is still around and being used and influenced by several major colleges today…Ex, who would of thought defensive minded Bob Stoops would have ever changed to an Air Raid offensive attack?

  208. Tempmanoa November 5, 2015 4:35 am

In 2013 and 2014, June was NOT the SMU offensive coordinator– it was Hal Mumme, a spread offense/Air Raid coach who was the coordinator (supposedly under pressure from the administration). My info comes from a friend who is an SMU booster in Dallas and he says the biggest problem was in scheduling “all the best teams in Texas like Baylor, Texas A&M, Houston and Texas Tech” without improving SMU recruiting which was partly SMU trying to uphold its academic standing and partly on JJ who lost two of his Texas recruiters including one who died. JJ had a good team in 2012, so he had bad years in 2013 and 2014 running a different offense with Mumme as OC.

  209. What's up November 5, 2015 5:17 am

If Matlin has a legit shot to get Dino Babers then I say hire him… But I think it’s a long shot to get Dino Babers to move back to Hawaii and who knows if there is a buyout clause on his contract.

Of the coaches on the list I saw on KHON only June Jones has proven as a head coach that he knows how difficult it is to recruit in Hawaii due to Geographical reasons. And working with the Hawaii tough budget is something that is not new for JJ either. And June Jones will drive up ticket sales, TV viewership/revenue from Hawaii Fans nation wide.

Looking forward to being in LV and among the many Warrior fans. Intend to hit the reception at HC and do the tailgate thing. Meeting some folks I know only through this venue. So we got a new QB at least named and starting, I think this is a smart move. Looking for some Paul Harris to the outside and an energized Mel Davis inside-right now he ain’t no Joey-an maybe just maybe I could get my wish of some JV carrying the ball or swinging out of the backfield. New captains new Coach now for some good ol’ Warrior energy. Looking forward to a complete game all phases for 4 quarters-I predict we are gonna get after that 25 year old QB and get some “lollipops”. That was a term I used coaching for turnovers-Go Warriors!!!

  213. azwarrior22 November 5, 2015 5:52 am

Not only would JJ provide an immediate boost in attendance and ticket sales but he also provides an exciting brand of “pass-first” offense. Chow-ball was boring. It’s all about scoring lots of TDs and outscoring your opponent.

It’s pretty sad when we could draw 41000 + to watch Abilene Christian back in the day and now we can’t even draw 15000 for Air Force. The fans have spoken.

  214. Old School Dave November 5, 2015 6:05 am

Everyone needs to “cool head.” Like two kids fighting over a toy, the parent takes it away and no one can play with it. AD Dave Matlin, I have a feeling, will choose “his own guy” and live with it. It’s called being accountable, not to mention a “New Start.”

    GO WARRIORS!! BEAT UNLV!!

  215. cappie the dog November 5, 2015 6:29 am

Aside from the Portland State loss, and the back-to-back shellackings at Fresno State and Boise State, I have only good memories of the June Jones regime.

I wouldn’t be overjoyed if he comes back, but it wouldn’t horrify me either.

Jones should be able to get Hawaii to the requisite seven wins.

Regardless of who the coach is, and given Hawaii’s athletic budget, maybe seven wins is the ceiling.

  216. jeezy33 November 5, 2015 6:31 am

Bitter because I don’t think June is right for the job? lol ok.

He hasn’t even been hired. How can I be bitter?

  217. tangomike November 5, 2015 6:39 am

As much as I believe that June Jones will be and should be the next head coach, he is notorious for being a poor recruiter.

he’s been quoted the first time here as not needing to recruit qb’s or wr’s because they will come to him. he also said because the qb in his system gets the ball out so quickly that he doesn’t need a good oline.

I’ve always wondered if he focused a bit more on recruiting, how good could the team be.

  218. Whats up November 5, 2015 7:16 am

From what I saw on that possible Head Coach list, Dino Babers and June Jones are the top picks. Both have recent Head Coaching experience and have proven they can win games with small market teams on a tight budget like Hawaii. They both would bring a new excitement and increase ticket sales, TV viewership and some increased interest from the TV networks and recruits from there name recognition nationally.

  219. Maddog50 November 5, 2015 7:23 am

Just watched the Tony Sanchez pregame int. still thinks the game last year was poor clock management and they got robbed. Fail to realize we just as much gift wrapped a win with poor play in the 4th. Also sounds as if we can get some good licks on the QB might do some damage both nursing shoulder issues. According to Sanchez looking to run the ball given the fact last weeks game with BSU featured over 100 passes combined. I watched that game and don’t know if I ever saw a BSU team so disinterested in playing the game-it really was not there typical effort not unlike the USU game. We will see. If game notes are correct they are not real big up front on the OL so hopefully we can get after it. It means nothing at all if we don’t show up ready to go all out for 4 qtrs. Just an observation and mine only I would say except for a few defenders they are really a lot like NM talent wise. If correct we should and I mean should be in a good place-time will tell as usual-GO WARRIORS!!!

  220. Down with... November 5, 2015 7:36 am

Main thing is….we attend the last 3 HOME games of the year and support UH Warrior Football. Whoever Matlin and UH hires as HC, is who they hire. You, me and all the rest on this blog have nothing to do with that. Go Bows!!!! I buy my season tix every year and pay my taxes and that’s my 2 cents…keep the change-Aloha!

  221. Darren November 5, 2015 7:41 am

If we play up to our potential…for all four quarters…something that we have not yet been able to do all year…then we really should have a good shot of winning all of our remaining games. Like the energy of the team…like the fact that players are saying practice is “more fun”. I think/hope we crush UNLV this week. Lol on Rigo freaking out that he’s a captain.

  222. H-Man November 5, 2015 7:49 am

The best candidate is probably not a candidate, Dino Babers. But we will never know because Matlin has already stated that he will not reveal the list of candidates. If we do learn who the candidates are, then it will have to be leaked by someone in the AD’s office. I don’t see that happening, not unless someone wants to lose their job. But we know that the following have made it know they will apply: June Jones, Nick Rolovich, and Rich Miano. Of these three, I like June Jones. If you expand the list to include Brian Norwood, Ivin Jasper, Duane Akina, and Kalani Sitake, the one thing that jumps out is that none of them have head coaching experience. But you never know who will turn out to be a good head coach. Only Matlin will have first-hand opportunity to judge which one in his opinion has the qualities to be a head coach with the exception of June Jones, so its sit and wait till the second week of December.

  223. H-Man November 5, 2015 7:52 am

And yes, I totally agree we have to show up for the last three games to show support for the team.

  224. mytake November 5, 2015 7:58 am

Let me be the 1st to predict that JJ will not be selected HC next year. If Victor Santa Cruz applies he will be the next HC. Judging by who the AD hired in basketball, VSC fits the mold. Young up and comer, has Hawaii connection, already a HC, successful program on a low budget, his pay won’t blow the budget, christian based (seems to be important now days) but, most of all, he has 20 year All Pro NFL’er Jackie Slater as Offensive Line Coach!

  225. papayalips November 5, 2015 8:00 am

Get real. If Matlin wants to address his biggest nightmare- were broke and dilapidated- the bottom line June Jones is the only logical choice. Hawaii’s winningest coach can generate more kala for less. Period. There is no competition! go with the proven winner. No brainer. But… UH has been brainless lately…

  226. azwarrior22 November 5, 2015 8:09 am

#217. Who dat? If nobody knows him, then how is that going to stir up fan interest?

  227. mytake November 5, 2015 8:16 am

    Who’s Ganot?!

  228. H-Man November 5, 2015 8:36 am

So who is Victor Santa Cruz? Victor played linebacker for Hawaii 1991-94. He red-shirted in 1990. The knock on Victor is his only college coaching experience is at Azusa Pacific (2001-Present). So okay, where does Azusa Pacific play. They play in the Pacific West Conference. Four schools from Hawaii belong to the Pacific West: Chaminade, UH Hilo, BYU Hawaii and HPU. Other members are California Baptist, Concordia University, Dixie State, Dominican University of California, Fresno Pacific University, Holy Names University, Notre Dame de Namur University, Point Loma Nazarene University and Academy Art University. So knowing the level of competition of Azusa Pacific, I would say the jump for Victor, with no coaching experience above the DII level, is too great.

  229. z November 5, 2015 8:45 am

I like VSC. Former UH player who has coached on both sides of the ball.

  230. al November 5, 2015 8:47 am

  231. jeezy33 November 5, 2015 9:01 am

    221. U realize high school coaches get hired to coach D1 these days right? Running any college program and having success these days is a accomplishment. I mean it didn’t stop a certain New Hampshire coach from getting to the NFL.

Interesting choice IMO. Especially with someone like Jackie Slater on his staff.
