The last goodbye

Norm Chow addressed the Warriors for the final time this morning, encouraging them to continue to work hard on the field and in the classroom.

When he finished, interim head coach Chris Naeole requested the Warriors’ traditional gesture of appreciation.

The players and coaches gave three loud claps for Chow.

If we are only willing to pay $400,000 or less for our next HC, I guarantee I will be renewing my season tickets and attending as many home and even away games as possible to enjoy the final years of Hawaii as a Division 1 program.

(carry over from last blog post)

  2. PONO November 2, 2015 9:20 am

Norm’s a good guy but just couldn’t get wins. Glad he had the chance to address the boys one last time.

  3. boolakanaka November 2, 2015 9:23 am

I am going to repeat this as it the 2nd last comment on the last post. So, a 4 person committee composed by th AD??? This is my proposed 4 person committee:

Bob Wagner (it would be a nice olive branch from UH-Manoa to him, and he has invaluable institutional knowledge)

Dave Shoji (no one has a longer tenure as a coach, or more success, and he knows more about the upper/lower campus politics than anyone else)

San Moku ( he holds a tie to all former players as a starter in the 80s, and equally important, he holds a VP position at a local university–HPU)

Carrie Okinaga (UH VP general counsel—you goin need her signature, one way or the other, at the end of the day, and we need a women’s touch).

There you go, the dream team….lol

  4. FearGod November 2, 2015 9:38 am

My 4 person committee that UH would pay for their vote is
    Moe
    Larry
    Curly
    Tulsi Gabbard

Since we are starting a new era in UH Football, can we start a new tradition of waving green towels on our road games?

And of course, everyone wear green UH gear or anything green. This great “visual effect” should pump up our players; and we all know that football is a very emotional game–especially if the game is very close in the 4th quarter. Let’s do this starting at UNLV everyone!!!

  8. Stephen Tsai November 2, 2015 9:58 am

There’s no committee. Matlin will seek advice from some people but the call will be his alone.

  9. Pete Jek November 2, 2015 9:59 am

Hawaii, you can never ever bargain your way to prosperity. Put your money where your mouth is and pay up. Otherwise, let’s just shut the party down and stop pretending we care about being relevant in college football.

  10. tom-warriornation November 2, 2015 10:05 am

Just imagine how good our football program would be if they diverted the rail money.

  12. NorthShoreFan November 2, 2015 10:11 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

Well the sun came up and is shining bright.

    Advisors:
    Reardon
    Lewis
enough, any more then it gets hard to pin responsibility on anyone.

me thinks ST would be smart enough to decline the penalty if the flag was thrown his way…lol

Coach Chris is going to need a lot of support. Hope he can keep the team together and fire up the okoles for the home stretch.
‘come together, right now, over me..

    IMUA WARRIORS!

  13. NorthShoreFan November 2, 2015 10:17 am

watching the tv morning news and reporter was trying to interview students. was surprised not many students knew what the he’o was going on with the football team.
so, take away the student section and sell it to the public as the “No Alcohol Noise Section” so the peeps no like noise around them won’t sit there.

  14. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 2, 2015 10:19 am

    Pete Jek,

Yep. Maybe its just the sign of the times that in Hawaii football is no longer something the great majority give 2 feces about any more.

If so, then that’s just how it goes I guess. Not everything lasts forever.

  15. papayalips November 2, 2015 10:24 am

Thank God for Matlin. He has seen all the past crap and knows what NOT to do. and he is DOING it. The only hope we have after hitting a rock bottom form poor administrative decisions. Upper campus and legislature stay out and keep quiet and let Matlin DO his thing! It’s our only hope to rise form the ashes.

NO MORE COMMITTEES, The hiring and firing of coaches at UH or any other school is the job of the AD, no one else. This is how we got into this mess to begin with. If the AD can’t do his job then why is he employed?

  17. Da Punchbowl Kid November 2, 2015 10:31 am

#15 – Mahalo for my new favorite nic for WB bloggers! 😆

Mahalo for the comment too – Matlin has a job to do, let him do it. Too many cooks spoil the stew.

  18. Da Punchbowl Kid November 2, 2015 10:35 am

Meanwhile, best wishes to Coach Chow.

Good luck to interim Coach Nae’ole and the Warriors. Lots of football left – I have faith that our guys can get the job done.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  19. george November 2, 2015 10:35 am

Mr. Tsai. Thank you for being a fair and nice person. They should ask your opinion too because you are the closest outside person to the team. I would want you on my team. 🙂

  20. Andrew November 2, 2015 10:37 am

    8.

Finally. Those committees were a joke

  21. Bulla November 2, 2015 10:41 am

It is a business decision, nothing more and nothing less. Some wish it were made a lot earlier and some will say we should wait. The decision has been made, mahalos have been said, now let’s salvage what is left and try and build this team with a work ethic based on commitment, hard work, and respect…..just like the old days!

  22. Trunks420 November 2, 2015 10:59 am

Me feels this is the last year’s of Hawaii as Division 1 football.

It sad that UH can’t bring in a good coach and staff.

Me say 2017 is Our last year as Division 1 football

  23. What??? November 2, 2015 11:01 am

Me thinks you hitting that 420 too much.

  24. Come on, man! November 2, 2015 11:09 am

“Me thinks you hitting that 420 too much.”

    lol

  25. jeezy33 November 2, 2015 11:16 am

Me thinks that I will be wagering a lot of money on UNLV this weekend in Vegas.
-9.5 . If Hawaii is going to quit like they did against Air Force, at least make $$ off it to those who will be in Las Vegas.

  26. Trunks420 November 2, 2015 11:16 am

I Want Rich Miano as our NEXT Head coach of it don’t happen I fear we back to same I’m same I’m with the JJ

  27. mytake November 2, 2015 11:21 am

I am not against committees. I’m against putting peiple who have nothing to do with football and, not even a UH alumni making decisions. I’m sure most of you forgot why UH went to these hiring committees. Hint: Hugh Yoshida and his college buddy VonAppen.

  28. Come on, man! November 2, 2015 11:27 am

if matlin’s next hire is successful, he’ll be a UH athletics god. if he ends up hiring norm chow II, when that coach is fired, Matlin will follow him out the door.

  29. kanak November 2, 2015 11:45 am

I’m glad that Matlin decided to can Chow immediately following being eliminated from bowl eligibility and even more pleased that he has decided to make the call on his own.

I do wonder about his possible decision to extend the hiring period thru December. With NLI signing day for midyear JC transfers being Dec 16; I think he needs to hire ahead of this date to allow the incoming coach a shot at getting some immediate help for next year, which many of us believe is needed to increase the talent pool. GO BOWS!!!

  30. Trunks420 November 2, 2015 11:45 am

Rich miano is and should be our coach.
If not it’ll be June Jones Back as a Chow 2

  31. Trunks420 November 2, 2015 11:48 am

I love our former athletes who are local analyst to come on boad as a candidate for the coach position.

  32. Old School Dave November 2, 2015 11:53 am

Happy to see them do away with committees and let the AD make the call. Sad that the compensation for the new coach is so low. That certainly limits the type of coaching candidates UH could have for the position. I think that Boise State’s coordinators make close to $400,000.

  33. Makai November 2, 2015 11:53 am

    Mr. Tsai,
What are feelings about Dino Babers coming back to UH? He applied last time correct? Any chance we can get/afford him? Would he take 500K and some money from boosters?

  34. jeezy33 November 2, 2015 12:00 pm

    33. I’ll answer that question plain and simple. No chance. Ship has sailed. He is coaching a successful program and his next contract will exceed a million dollars.

  35. David J. November 2, 2015 12:02 pm

To all the people who lives in Hawaii are a fans of University of Hawaii football and other sports program!. When the University of Hawaii let go or fired any of their staff in any sports program. The University pays them off!. If you never hear that the UNLV never paid off those Head Coaches and staffs that got fired or be let go!. Like! Remember Mike Sanford he had files a law suit against the UNLV for not paying him his last three years of his contact!. And then last year head coach his is also filed law suit against the University for not paying him for that season that they let him go!. Plus the other one more year on his contact!. They’re eight more file and even went to court to get they’re money!. There were two AD, four basketball Head Coaches and two football Head Coaches never gotten paid!. I hope that the University paid off Norm Chow!. I hope really seriously that the University of Hawaii AD get a really great Head Coach!. Because, I feel sorry for the new head coach at UNLV! . If he doesn’t do go for the next four more years!. He will not get paid for it!. Because picture this a big company hire you to work for them under contract for three years. And your contact say that if you to be let go you will get paid whatever your contact said to you. And you been let go and you find out that never and will never get for the next three years on your contact! What would you do?

  36. willeboy November 2, 2015 12:02 pm

    25 jeezy33-
I thought the exact same thing but then something popped into my head…. what if coach chow was tying bailey’s hands with the offense? what if bailey gains full control of player choice and play calling, sits wittek and tries someone else, finally puts st juste and ewaliko in, and low and behold they score 45+ points? just some things that made me go hmmm???

  37. David J. November 2, 2015 12:06 pm

THANK YOU FOR THE WONDERFUL HARD WORK AND ALSO BEING A FATHER FIGURE TO THE PLAYERS ON THE TEAMS!. AGAIN TAKE CARE NORM AND ALSO YOUR FAMILY TOO!

  38. 310Braddha November 2, 2015 12:10 pm

Kenny Niumatololo is the best choice. He wants to come back and retire in Hawaii, which solves your instability prob. He runs a very good program and solid offense. The last time Hawaii ran the same offense under Wags and Paul Johnson they won the Holiday Bowl against a good Illinois team. And Kenny runs the offense better than Johnson at this point. If Navy can get the results with only Academy recruits, imagine what our recruits could do, i.e. Ewaliko. Plus our local recruiting will be greatly improved.

  39. Makai November 2, 2015 12:10 pm

I’m excited for the last stretch of games to see if Bailey was held back by Chow. I hope Naeole tells Bailey “brah let it rip”. Don’t be surprised if you see the offense start playing fast to get into rhythm. Chow ball is gone hope we see some tempo!

  40. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 2, 2015 12:11 pm

    Makai,

I would be thrilled to see Babers as our next HC waaaaay over any of the names mentioned so far. I don’t think he would allows himself to get ripped off by UH though. Babers isn’t priced like champagne but he is definitely worth more than the keystone light we are prepared to serve.

  41. Come on, man! November 2, 2015 12:14 pm

unless Niumatololo doesn’t like money, I don’t see why he would come back to UH. He can always retire at Navy and then come back home. going from Navy to UH wouldn’t even be a lateral move. it would be a step down.

  42. Arcumfortis November 2, 2015 12:15 pm

28…..I agree but at least we will know who made the call (Matlin) and that person will be accountable. This business of “back room” influence (real or imagined) gets really old. So far I like Matlin’s style. Moves quickly on things and doesn’t spend a lot of time talking.

  43. jeezy33 November 2, 2015 12:16 pm

    36. I don’t think Chow is to blame for Stubblefield inability to catch the football or Pedroza constant fumble problems. UNLV is actually pretty good. I watched 3 of their games this year. The Boise game this past week was a 1 score game all the way till the end where Boise held UNLV on a 4th and goal up 14. Then Boise broke off some garbage time TDs at the end.

I do expect Naeole to go with Woolsey who will at least move his feet and stop staring his target down like Wittek. But 9.5 points just seems way too low for a team that looks defeated. I saw players on the sideline quit vs Air Force. Vegas has distractions and I can’t see culture changing in 1 week and 3 practices.

  44. Trunks420 November 2, 2015 12:16 pm

I guess this good news means I get to drink and 420 more often with my #1 Friend Norm Chow……sad thing is I no get free tickets to game no more.

  45. Old School Dave November 2, 2015 12:19 pm

For the situation at hand, I hope Coach Naeole can pull off an “Ed Orgeron” type of season (like he did at USC as interim coach) with the 4 remaining games. Don’t know if it’s possible, but it would be fun to watch.

Best of luck to Coach Naeole and the team!!

  46. oldtimer808 November 2, 2015 12:21 pm

#38 that will never happen. He has it too good at Navy and he will retire to Hawaii to be a fan.

  47. jeezy33 November 2, 2015 12:22 pm

    44. Sad news is Inside Access might not be as entertaining. I enjoyed Chows ability to make excuses while following up with “we don’t make excuses”. And the fans no longer have reassurance that the team is going to work.

It’s like when someone tells you “no offense” but…….

  48. 310Braddha November 2, 2015 12:25 pm

#41. Niumatololo has already been making good money for many years, he is more likely set. Last reported salary was 1.5 mil. It would definitely have to be pride based to rebuild this program, as well as a self-challenge if he entertains coming to IH.

  49. Old School Dave November 2, 2015 12:30 pm

More worried about the salary package for the new coaching staff. They going back to $100,000 for coordinators and $50,000 a year for position coaches?

  50. akuhead2 November 2, 2015 12:35 pm

Hey #7. Totally agreen with green. Bright light-green towels!
[…that you can wash and the color won’t come out. Let’s put some effort into this.]
The white towels always look like “the white towel” to me. (Sorry).
In other words, this should apply to home games as well. Maybe a simple pattern with white and some green, but the “white towel”, just not right.
    Go Bows !

  51. seewhy November 2, 2015 12:43 pm

Thank you for your efforts Coach Chow.

  52. Ipu Man November 2, 2015 12:44 pm

Not ashamed of God’s gift to Hawaii, the rainbow.
    Maybe rainbow towels?
    Go Rainbow…Warriors!

  53. seewhy November 2, 2015 12:45 pm

    RE: tom-warriornation #7

I like that idea! I would be willing to do that!

  54. seewhy November 2, 2015 12:45 pm

    Go Bows!!!

  55. H-Man November 2, 2015 12:47 pm

    This is interesting:
DINO BABER’S BASE COMPENSATION – BOWLING GREEN
    2014 guaranteed money: $400,000
    2014 base salary: $400,000
    Contract guaranteed money $2,000,000
    contract length: 5 years
    start date: Dec. 19, 201
    end date: Dec. 18, 2018
So maybe Dino is not out of the picture. But I am sure there is a huge buy-out provision. Oh well.

  56. ponojr November 2, 2015 12:54 pm

#38 I’m not looking forward to watching the triple option again. As a fan, I would prefer a wide open offense that throws the ball around the field. Plus, it must be harder to recruit kids when not many schools run this type of O as compared to spread schemes.

  57. H-Man November 2, 2015 12:56 pm

BTW, there is no chance Ken Niumatalolo will take the Hawaii head coaching job. He said on a radio interview recently that when he leaves Navy, he is done with coaching. He talked about asking UH for a job like an assistant equipment manager. He basically wants to do volunteer work and it does not have to be with the football program. Ken is the highest paid coach among the military academies at roughly $1.5 million annual salary. I heard, but maybe mistakenly, that he is the highest paid federal worker.

  58. oneseason November 2, 2015 1:05 pm

With ticket revenue down at least $1M per year under Coach Chow, I hope the total Football coaching budget will reflect what is representative of the top of the Mountain West Conference. That doesn’t mean it all has to be guaranteed, but unless you want to target a particular coach with a particular offer, the potential compensation should be attractive to encourage several qualified applicants. IMO, winning will bring back fans. Last night’s Wahine Volleyball match, with the Governor in attendance, should demonstrate that. Pennywise and pound foolish is not the way to go. Let’s Go Rainbow Warriors!

“Season-ticket sales have tumbled more than 25 percent in Norm Chow’s four years to 15,007 and are down 46 percent in seven years. Meanwhile ticket revenue has plunged from $4.8 million to, maybe, $2 million this year.”; http://www.staradvertiser.com/columnistspremium/20151101_number_of_fans_is_more_disturbing_than_the_score.html

  59. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 2, 2015 1:05 pm

    H-Man,

$400,000 is Baber’s worth in 2014. Going 6-2 so far, beating 2 BCS teams away and what will be a winning season means you have to multiply that salary by 3 or 4 to get what his market rate is right now.

  60. Come on, man! November 2, 2015 1:14 pm

H-Man: Dino Babers won’t leave bowling green to take a downward step to Hawaii. That guy’s career trajectory is only going up. the next job he takes will be a million dollar one at a very big school.

  61. PONO November 2, 2015 1:14 pm

Babers will be coaching in a P5 conference next year. He trajectory as a coaching is up and to the right. He would kill that trajectory by going to UH.

  62. letsgowarriors November 2, 2015 1:15 pm

    when is practice?

  63. Former UH Athlete November 2, 2015 1:21 pm

So I heard UH is looking to keep the next coaches salary under $500k in order to avoid getting BOR approval…

This presumably limits the candidate pool to (ordered by NCAA division hierarchy):
    1.Power 5 FBS position coaches
    2. non-Power 5 FBS coordinators
    3. Mid-level FCS Head Coaches
    4. FCS Coordinators
    5. Division 2 or 3 Head Coaches or Coordinators
    6. High School Coaches
    7. Aging Career Coordinators with no HC experience (oh wait… maybe not)
    8. Retirees

My thoughts if Matlin stays under $500k:
–Most of the names being mentioned by commenters here would be removed from consideration.
–Many Power 5 Coordinators will be making more money than UH will be reportedly offering for HC.
–Hard to say if quality non-Power 5 FBS Coordinators would take UH’s job vs wait for better opportunity/situation.
–Hard to say if UH would take another crack at a coach without HC experience.
–Almost zero chance a non-Power 5 FBS HC would be interested in UH’s job.
–No current HC or almost all current coordinators would take a paycut for UH’s job.

  64. Makai November 2, 2015 1:26 pm

Former UH Athlete so we are back to either June, Nick and Rich? For 500K maybe a little extra from private boosters? June loves the 808 this would be his riding into the sunset job. Nick is looking for his first head coaching gig. We all know this is Rich’s dream job it seems like he will never leave the state.

  65. Inyoface November 2, 2015 1:28 pm

Can the players have long hair again?

  66. spisskyhrad November 2, 2015 1:37 pm

No amount of words can express my consternation with the ineptitude of the administration at UH. Aside from demonstrating no understanding at all about college football, their understanding of what is needed is utterly lacking.

D1 football is money football. Period. The administration of the athletics program has lost so much money over the last 4 years they should all be fired! Chow was just a PHD which the egghead(nuckleheads) of this PHD driven administration felt comfortable with.

What Chow did to the freshman class of 2012 was inexcusable much less his treatment of the coaches. He will go down as the worst coach in HAWAII history and one of the more prominent reasons for HAWAII going D2 or less.

  67. jeezy33 November 2, 2015 1:38 pm

    65. Solomon Matautia might get his diploma by the time his hair grows that long again.

  68. FearGod November 2, 2015 1:41 pm

Zwahlen, Ursua, Ammon Barker, Davasyia Hagger, Ewaliko and Vele
need to be in on offense at the same time.

  69. seewhy November 2, 2015 1:47 pm

    65. But it might make Chris jealous.

  70. H-Man November 2, 2015 1:52 pm

Hawaii will either remain D1 as a MWC member or drop football. D2 is not an option for Hawaii. Hawaii needs to maximize its ticket sales revenue at the D1 level. There is no chance a revenue model can support a D2 program.

  71. Former UH Athlete November 2, 2015 1:52 pm

Out of curiosity, how did Reilly and Zwahlen look in camp and in practice during the season?

I do recall that Wittek has been limited in several weeks of practices this season, so has Reilly/Zwahlen gotten reps?

Is the plan to still red-shirt Zwahlen?

  72. Former UH Athlete November 2, 2015 2:00 pm

    70. UH will have to drop athletics all together if football goes away. Football makes the money so the rest of UH athletics can operate. Plus, dropping football really alters the Title IX scholarship balance. That would be a big task of cutting the appropriate programs to get the numbers to balance. Plus a number of lower campus facilities will go vacant.

Cutting football is not an option unless you’re ok with just high school sports or the Manoa Summer League for your live basketball fix.

  73. FearGod November 2, 2015 2:01 pm

I like Zwhalen’s timing on releasing the ball.
Best to give him game experience so the next coach can see with his own eyes what he can do.
    Let’s do it Coach Bailey

  74. bottomfeeder November 2, 2015 2:05 pm

To all the other bottom feeders suddenly playing experts again on the next head coach, especially ones clamoring for Rolo, Miano, Niumatalolo, or others with “local” connection. You are the same ones celebrating when Chow got hired – never learn. Only thing in common with all you “locals” is that you’re all “lolos”.

  75. Whats up November 2, 2015 2:08 pm

After rematching that painful beat down Hawaii got from Air Force. The Hawaii Offense needs some Preparation H ointment after that okole whipping they took! The Hawaii Defense needs some ice packs from the beating they took because of the Hawaii offense… well… being the Norm Chow inept Hawaii Offense.

The Hawaii Defense should be pissed off at the Hawaii Offense, especially the WR’s not catching passes hitting them in the hands and fumbles galore! Wittek did throw some nice passes and the WR’s letting down the offense once again.

I know Chris Naole is not exactly in a position to hire a new WR coach but he has to find a way to get the WR’s better coaching or the rest this season is going to rely on the feet of Ikaika Woolsey, Mevin Davis and Paul Harris. Or the rest of the season will be the same as with the Offense being inept and the Defense staying on the field pretty much the whole game.

Hopefully, Naole can get the WR’s play cleaned up somehow and maybe let Offensive Coordinator Don Bailey call the plays on offense with less input. Let the experinced coaches DC Tom Mason and OC Don Bailey game plan and call the plays.

Lets be clear, everyone is still auditioning to keep there jobs at Hawaii or look good to find jobs next season somewhere else. So finishing strong will be paramount for the all the coaches on staff. But most important finishing the season strong will bring back the Hawaii fans to Aloha Stadium to support the Hawaii Football players that play their okoles off.

  76. cappie the dog November 2, 2015 2:14 pm

To continue the thread of a 4-person committee, I would choose: Artie Wilson, Lori Santi, Jim Leahey, and our moderator.

My fake 4-person committee would comprise of: Frank DeLima and his three dopplegangers.

    4-person committee by default.

    I still prefer one man’s(or woman’s) opinion.

    That’s leadership.

    73. It’s not just the coaches fighting to keep their jobs, the returning players also need to show that they deserve to keep their scholarships next season.

All new coaching staffs must assess what they have to work with and if they need to just add pieces or if they need to “clean house”. Almost 100% of the time, the guys that don’t buy into the new coach’s culture will be gone.

  78. kapakahi November 2, 2015 2:22 pm

    #68,

Hagger didn’t even suit up this past Saturday.

  79. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 2, 2015 2:36 pm

Being reactionary isn’t necessarily a bad thing. We don’t employ Kreskins in state government. It’s how you go about it.

The problem is the reactions often time fall victim to the pendulum effect, especially when the problem is a high profile one. When we react to a problem, we address by going to the extremes. When JJ left, we dumped tons of unwarranted amounts of cash to the next HC.

Now with the Arnold flop and the criticisms over coaching salaries, we go ahead and aim to cut the salary of the next coach even when the $500K mark was woefully inadequate to begin with.

  80. pokesquid November 2, 2015 2:55 pm

If not JJ for head coach…I like this guy and maybe we can steal him away from SMU.

    Chad Morris

Who cares that Morris is struggling in his first year at SMU, which was a complete mess when he arrived? He’s one of the best offensive minds in the game, the architect of Clemson’s high-powered attacks from 2011-2014. And he’s going to be an outstanding head coach. Plus, he knows the ACC terrain as well as the recruiting landscape in the Mid-Atlantic region. Morris is the guy who developed Tajh Boyd and helped get Deshaun Watson to Death Valley.

  81. Paul Yamashita November 2, 2015 2:58 pm

Rich Miano is clearly the guy for the job. He has an excellent staff ready and is a great all around coach with Hawaii ties. He has the experience of being a player and can keep the local boys home. Make the right choice and hire coach Miano

  82. islandman November 2, 2015 2:59 pm

72… Not sure if athletics will go away if football is dropped. Look at Wichita State with no football team, some of the Big West schools like UC Irvine; Gonzaga, St. Mary’s, et al.

“As for the buyout information, Sanchez would receive the remainder of his $250,000 base salary through the end of his term if UNLV fires him. He also could take a $500,000 lump-sum payment if the termination occurs by June 30, 2017, or $250,000 if it’s after that date.”

  83. Na Alii Pride November 2, 2015 3:00 pm

#4 fear god – I like your selection committee members, but I would make it a five person panel and replace Tulsi Gabbard with Abbot and Costello to go along with Larry, Curly, and Moe. Thoughts?

Just happy to hear that Matlin is bucking the trend and making the decision on his own. I think he is more than capable of making a good choice. He already showed he has the hutzpah (sp?) by removing Chow now. For some reason, I just think he can pull a rabbit out of the hat and come up with the right guy. Good Luck Mr. Matlin. I believe in you!

  84. pokesquid November 2, 2015 3:01 pm

    More opinions on our future….

Whatever you do coaches…please do not burn Zwahlen redshirt year…He IMO is our future at QB right now.

In the meantime give Beau Reilly a chance to start and lets see how he does…This will at least give us some games to evaluate him.

No more Woosley, he had his many chances…No more Wittek either, he is the past.

  85. Shoko November 2, 2015 3:02 pm

Curious what Chow’s plans are now. Despite his losing record as a head coach, I’m sure Chow’s reputation as a coordinator/assistant coach is in tact and would still attract offers from other programs if he were still interested in coaching.

Or maybe he simply retires and enjoys life, no longer burdened with the stress of being a football coach. I’m kind of surprised he made it through four years without any serious health problems considering his age. Obviously, football coaches are a different breed of humans. 😆

  86. Boolakanaka November 2, 2015 3:11 pm

A couple points of summary: Dino-nope. Kenny-nope. Football going aloha no–nope. (As correctly stated, unless they shelve the other 1/2 of the entire Athletic Department, title IX dictates almost require the football program); and finally, Chris N. doesn’t get jealous about anything, unless it involves folks getting second and thirds….

  87. Trunks420 November 2, 2015 3:12 pm

Wow!!! Getting a decent coach right now is hard to come by…

But if anything getting a new coach should be a guy willing to go crazy and me do it all in for a win

  88. Na Alii Pride November 2, 2015 3:14 pm

Somebody on Bobby’s show or the Sports Animals brought up this guys name. Kalani Sitake is out of our price range, as he makes over $700,000 as Oregon State’s DC.

  89. Fei Jai November 2, 2015 3:16 pm

I think we going win the next game under Naole.

    UH 17, oddah guys 10.

  90. Fei Jai November 2, 2015 3:17 pm

If Naole wins the remaining games, we should keep him.

  91. Asian Warrior November 2, 2015 3:28 pm

My alum DK from Iolani said it best we NEED June Jones! He was the only one who won despite all the short-comings. JJ will take the players no else wants and lets be honest if we can get some of the rejects from the power 5 conference it’ll work in our favor. So what if they don’t have the best or cleanest records everyone deserves a second chance and if they can as I quote “run from the law they can run with the ball” that program with that motto won National Championships and is still a very successful football program to date. It’s time to accept reality and get the players who can really play ball. Lower the entrance exam would help as JJ stated before when he was here trying to recruit. I believe in second chances so JJ gets one and he’ll get us players who may deserve one too.
If not JJ then why not Cal Lee if you look at UNLV they are doing okay with their coach who was a high school coach. He’s keeping a lot of local talent. If we could get most of the All-State players to play for Hawaii we would dominate the MWC and have a chance at the playoffs. What ever the case JJ should be first choice and Cal and crew second. Always a Warrior!!

  92. Former UH Athlete November 2, 2015 3:31 pm

    80. Yes it can be done, however the examples you mentioned (except for UCI) are powerhouse non-Power 5 BB programs and make a lot of money. I don’t have the numbers for UCI or St Mary’s (which is an expensive private school) but I’m certain Gonzaga and Wichita St BB make way more money than UH FB.

UH MBB barely breaks even on good years. I believe the 2012 UHAD audit showed MBB didn’t even make $1 million in ticket sales for fiscal year 2012.

In 2012, Gonzaga MBB made $8.22 million, with a net profit of $2.2 million. This is only ticket sales, official merchandise sales, and other program revenues. This does not include tv money, fund raisers, and outside revenue the program generates for the university as a whole.

  93. islandman November 2, 2015 3:33 pm

    89. Will they waive the 5 yrs of college coaching experience for Naeole ?

  94. cocobean November 2, 2015 3:35 pm

I wouldn’t worry too much about salary until the candidate pool is full. If there’s some big fish in the pool I think Matlin will find a way to increase the size of the bait to land one.

  95. WarriorMojo November 2, 2015 3:53 pm

Who were among the rumored applicants last time? Didn’t the list include Cav and Mark Banker? Wonder if they’d apply again. Riley’s not exactly tearing it up at Nebraska. Last time around my choices were Rolo and Cav. What’s Reinebold up to these days?

I’d like to see the return of Craig Stutzman as receivers coach. He, along with Miano, are the two coaches who stood out in my mind as teachers of the game. The way they worked with their position players was inspiring.

Best choice for HC would be an offensive coordinator as game management is (or should be) part of their make up.

  96. Fei Jai November 2, 2015 4:00 pm

If Naole can take the current team and win all the remaining games, that would say all that needs to be said about whether or not he is HC material. That would say a lot. No cry babying about empty cupboards, needing three years, etc. It was show he knows how to lead men and to inspire them to win, without excuses.

A lot of ifs. I know. I just want a coach that can produce wins. No cry babying.

  97. Boolakanaka November 2, 2015 4:03 pm

My inside track guy, is Duane Akina. He has got some traits that are desired: proven recruiter (I think he has more DBs in the nfl than any other position coach in the last 20 years); has been with 3 very successful programs UA, UT, and Stanford, local guy with ties to boosters, and has a solid Rolodex that he could put together a staff. Question is money….

  98. Fei Jai November 2, 2015 4:05 pm

Always put the best interest of the institution first; this, norm did not do.

  99. Rodney November 2, 2015 4:33 pm

Coach Chow Thanks for your relentless efforts!
If JJ comes back fine. Hope he has
learned that a TE is need now and then.
A Heavy formation in the goal line .
A athletic Qb is a must!!!!

  100. locomoco November 2, 2015 4:34 pm

Akina? Career coordinator/asst., Punahou grad, never a head coach before. Sounds too familiar to me. No thank you.

  101. Old School Dave November 2, 2015 4:40 pm

Back to the Dance studios during fall camp for the players? I hope not. Stutzman was at Weber State before the coach got fired, I think. Is he back in the islands, now? Same with Timmy Chang?

  102. pokesquid November 2, 2015 4:47 pm

Ok Gang…I believe that if we want to seriously bring or team back to respectability we need to find a HC who is of the “offensive minded” type, PERIOD!

I see others being mentioned for the job…but most of them are “defensive minded” coaches, or at least come from a defensive background.

We need an “offensive minded” HC someone like Coach Jones, who can create an exciting type of football on the offensive side…This will make people excited…Make Hawaii an exciting brand of football again…And most importantly, put Da Butts in Da Seats.

If you look at the top exciting offenses (ex, passing minded offenses) that is running now…you will notice that 11 of the 12 are “pass happy type” of offenses…And I believe ALL of them but 2 have HC’s that are “OFFENSIVE MINDED” HC.

Here is the list of the Top 12 Passing offenses:

    1. Washington St…2. Bowling Green…3.Texas Tech…4. TCU…5. Western Kentucky…6. Cali…7. Memphis…8. USC…9. Oklahoma St…10. Cincy…11. Tulsa…12. Baylor.

Here is the list of the Top 12 Scoring offenses:

    1. Baylor…2. TCU…3. Oklahoma (changed to Air Raid attack this season)…4. Texas Tech…5. Bowling Green…6. Memphis…7. Stanford…8. Notre Dame…9. USC…10. Clemson…11. Ohio St…12. Oklahoma St.

Based on the rankings above…would you agree that this “pass happy” style of football is what we need?….If so, then that is WHY I believe that we need an “Offensive Minded” HC to bring us back to exciting football again.

Scoring = Exciting!…Passing = Exciting!…More Winning is the result of playing Exciting style of football in todays world.

Bottom line…we got to think “OFFENSIVE MINDED” HC with an exciting style of offense…just like what Coach Jones brought, as the top requirement for our next HC at Hawaii.

  103. kapakahi November 2, 2015 4:52 pm

Naeole’s focus is with the remaining 4 games this 2015 season…..as it should be…..as the designated Interim HC.

Don’t get the sense that Naeole wants the HC job……with all the administrative duties and responsibilities…….but would rather remain as an OL coach instead.

  104. Come on, man! November 2, 2015 5:07 pm

    “Hope he has
learned that a TE is need now and then.
A Heavy formation in the goal line .
A athletic Qb is a must!!!!”

stop it. none of these are a requirement to play football. they’re a requirement for specific offenses that you’re running but not necessarily ALL offenses.

  105. Rodney November 2, 2015 5:16 pm

    #102 excellent research

  106. Boolakanaka November 2, 2015 5:26 pm

Tomey and Wags, both career assistants before taking over at HC…

  107. Postmanke November 2, 2015 5:35 pm

What?!? AD that will make the call at it alone? Love it! Doing the leg work and hiring in house will save hundreds of thousands. That money is well needed. I don’t know AD Matlin but I already like him. Never understood the Temp Agency Head Coach Search Committee deal. I get that theres confidentaility clauses and using third party helps but thats why programs have boosters. Let them reach out. And if you need to do market research for head coach put up a poll on ESPN .com or SB Nation. You’ll have all the experts chiming in for free. Need a list candidates? its there too. Save money, take the leadership roll and you’ll have the whole state behind you. Good Luck AD Matlin!

Also those teams don’t have a body of water to cross. Most of those teams listed can bus or take a short flight to other schools in their conference. Also we will still have an agreement to pay the Big West teams to travel here. We can’t afford that without football revenue.

  109. Buffoman November 2, 2015 5:52 pm

Somehow it would be great to see coach Naeole successful. I rarely agree with FJ, but on this I am leaning his way. He would be a young local boy who made it, like Ken (@Navy). It would be interesting, if all fell into place and he was selected, to see what kind staff he would assemble if he did not retain the existing one.

  110. papajoe2 November 2, 2015 6:12 pm

#91, Asian Warrior~ Coach Chow also got players nobody else wanted or “rejects”. I can think Shoerder, Pedroza, Witteck, just off the top of my head. I’m sure there others that Chow got. I think the difference is what you do with who you have.

  111. WarriorMojo November 2, 2015 6:17 pm

Yeah, I was surprised that Naeole was picked as the interim HC over Bailey or Mason. Quite honestly, my hope was that the team, especially the O, did well this year and next, which would have set the stage for Bailey to take over. Didn’t work out that way.

Also, not to be negative, but the O-line hasn’t been a particular strength of the team the past couple of years so I’m wondering how it gets better with Naeole having to handle so many more responsibilities now.

  112. pokesquid November 2, 2015 6:45 pm

    110. Naeole was already the associate/assistant Head Coach…so he was the next obvious choice to take over for Chow.

I don’t think Naeole will be taking over completely…Mason runs the defense and Bailey will most likely continue running the offense…But hey, who knows really.

  113. 3-Prong November 2, 2015 6:56 pm

Mr. Matlin, this is not rocket science. Call June, offer him $400,000 with incentives for increased season ticket sales, bowl eligibility and the like, sign the contract and the rest will take care of itself. Oh, but can you tell him that name changes to our Rainbow Warriors is off the table but he is free to dress our team in black or silver again on occassion.

  114. NorthShoreFan November 2, 2015 7:15 pm

Should Sanchez resign before Dec. 15, 2016, he would owe UNLV $1 million, or $750,000 if it’s afterward.”…for dis part I wouldn’t resign, just let things go, then they would buy me out…hehehe..

Anyhoo, I want to add another “Adviser” to the group…Sen. Sam Slum, he know we can get one good coach for less than what we paid Norm.

Is the $400,000 limit only for the guaranteed money? If it is, then I can see arranging a contract with a performance based incentive. Say $200,000 more for winning 1 game. Would that be the loophole to bypass the politics and hire a more established name?

  128. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 2, 2015 7:59 pm

For those that follow our recruiting efforts, could you help me out with a question?

    ST:

Just curious, as football at most colleges usually support most of the other sports including women’s sports required by Title IX. Question: Does the Hawaii football program currently have a positive cashflow and partially support other sports program? I am aware that overall the Athletic Dept. has a deficit but what about just football.

If there is a positive cashflow coming from football, it it enough to pay for Chow’s buyout?

  134. pokesquid November 2, 2015 9:06 pm

Just finished watching But..Seriously!….And Bobby Curran hit it on the head about what is needed to be our next HC.

It is not about who, but about what…And he was talking about the “Schemes”…..What kind of “Schemes” will this next coach bring in that will make us hard to prepare for…What kind of offense do we run that will give us the best chance to win games.

We can no longer have a coach with a Vanilla type of offense…The last 2 coaches who tried this both FAILED big time…in Von Appen and now Chow…We need a “scheme” type of offense and we need a HC who has the system in place to make it work.

Tomey did it…Wagner did it…and Jones did it….Now Jones wants back in…and I say he deserves another shot.

Remember…he is not the only coach who returned and found sucess…Chris Ault did it with Nevada and made the Pistol offense famous….Mike Leach is doing it at Washington St with his new and improved Air Raid offense.

I believe Coach Jone’s can do it again…but this time I believe that he knows from his past failures and also from how the game has evolved, what “new things” he needs to incorporate into his offensive “schemes” to make it work better…I really find it hard to believe, like some here believe, that he will be running the same type of Run N Shoot offense that he ran here previously….Nah, I believe he is much smarter than that…and will run a new and better version of that scheme.

One thing I do like is that on the offensive side, if Jones is hired, he will have a good base of players to work with in the skilled position…with Collie, Ewaliko, Ursua, Stubs, Bernard, Kemp, Zwahlen, Haggar, St Juste, Harris, and Milton & Timoteo (if they both still commit)..which I think they will if Jone’s becomes the new HC.

“Put Chow to work for his money like Beemer for VT and Spurrier for USC. He can golf, host fundraisers, and lobby for money from the legislature next year to earn his paycheck.”

people would go to a frank beemer or steve spurrier fundraiser because they are iconic coaching legends (especially spurrier). they are well known and loved in the coaching world and spurrier is just an overall entertaining and charismatic dude.

nobody would go to a norm chow fundraiser. right now, he’s probably the most hated man in UH football coaching history. maybe even more so than von appen.

  137. Come on, Man! November 2, 2015 9:21 pm

“I really find it hard to believe, like some here believe, that he will be running the same type of Run N Shoot offense that he ran here previously…”

some here believe that june jones will run the 1990 run and shoot that houston oilers ran, with half rollouts by the qb and are like “JJ is outdated! defenses have ‘evolved!'”

but really, they don’t even have a functional understanding of what the run and shoot actually is aside from cosmetic things, like 4 WR shotgun sets and no tight end. and probably like “they throw a lot.”

  138. PONO November 2, 2015 9:30 pm

I see a lot of people asking for Miano but I’ve yet to hear a credible argument. He has no HC or coordinator experience. He had a great walk on program but never proved he was a great recruiter. I think he lacks contacts on the mainland and he’s not very popular with the HS coaching ranks after his Kaiser stint. Doesn’t sound like a great candidate to me.

  139. nomu November 2, 2015 9:31 pm

Four years under Chow. Another four years under a new head coach. That’s nearly a decade. Almost 10 years of football. So how critical is the choice for the next head coach? Curran on “But Seriously” tonight, as usual professional and objective. He summed up Chow’s tenure as well as anyone could. As I sat there watching the show, gut check was that anyone who said they weren’t frustrated and critical at some point, is either lying or they just don’t care enough about UH football.

So, my final thoughts. If you were in Chow’s shoes, you would not want anyone feeling sorry for you. You would do what he did, wish the team the best and end on a positive note. So that’s how I’ll choose to remember him. A winner, in his fourth and final year at UH. And looking forward to a new start. And winning.

  140. pokesquid November 2, 2015 9:41 pm

    Common On Man!

No No No…Coach Chow is not more hated than Von Appen…Not even close!

Von Appen was the worse…He blamed everyone and talk shit about the players and was very sarcastic in his talks…Screw him!

At Coach Chow is a man who you know loves his players a lot!…Coach Chow is a man with integrity and although he didn’t make the players better on the field…it is not disputed by anyone especially in the media that he did make his players better people off the field…Rob DeMello who is around the players almost daily even confirmed how Chow’s influence on the players off the field was evident as they all were very polite and acted like gentleman.

Von Appen was hated by his players…while Chow was respected.

The ONLY people in Hawaii who loved Von Appen more than Chow was all the gamblers who bet on Hawaii at home when they were double digit underdogs…Yes we were so bad during the Von Appen days that we were actually huge double digit underdogs at home to almost everyone….But, if you bet with Hawaii and took the point then you made big bucks as Hawaii at home as double digit dogs had one of the best winning % against the spread, hitting somewhere close to 80% wins….I believe it was only 2nd best betting option only behind home underdogs in the NFL on Monday Night Football.

But, those days of winning betting with Hawaii as double digit home underdogs are now gone when Von Appen left and Vegas got wise with making the home team on Monday Night Football underdogs….Oh well.

Many people no longer bet on Hawaii games (as someone once told me) because no can tell what the hell will happen….They said at least when Von Appen was here they would take Hawaii, eventhough they know they would lose, Hawaii would still cover the spread when at home as double digit dogs….When Jones came on board the line (so I heard) completely flipped in the opposite direction.

That is what we need…We need to be double digit home favorites again.

  143. 808 November 2, 2015 10:20 pm

I remember 3rd down & 15 yds to go was not a problem for UH warrior football. The next play UH would make it 1st & 10.

I hope whoever they bring in, the HC does not bring in a pro style offense where the o-line needs to be 6 ft – 7 inches tall and 367 lbs across the line to be productive by establishing the run first. No more, run, run, pass, punt. Let’s hope with next year’s team, the punter is not the MVP.
    —————————————————-
Maybe the next four games, we will see Bailey’s version of the spread offense.

  144. winning November 2, 2015 10:31 pm

Dont think JJ would take the hc position. He might like to just do the O! Less responsibility, small pay but no need the bucks already. He would have some athletic and speed QBs as well as a big dropback QB. He would have Collie for starters as receiver. Plus, Mack Milton should be a potential winner down the road and gotta keep him here!

  145. SteveM November 2, 2015 10:36 pm

At the risk of being politically incorrect, the stage is set for June Jones. This is a no-brainer, if he is indeed interested. Many have listed great reasons for his return, but these are the ones on my mind.

    REVERSE FALLING TICKET SALES/VIEWING
Can he do it a third time–saving Hawaii in 1999, Hawaii to the Sugar Bowl, and SMU to their first bowl games after 25 years. Can he really do it? I am hopeful but a lot of people will put their money down to watch history in making again. ESPN could put money down and bring their TV cameras with frequency again to see this unfold.

Under Armour should be happy with the return of Jones and outfit us longer.

CAN HE SALVAGE THIS RECRUITING SEASON?
Are you kidding? Picture this: Hi, I’m June Jones. QB RECRUIT: yes sir, I know. Then maybe you know Timmy Chang and Colt Brennan…they threw a ball for me. Moves on to other position players, naming NFL names from his UH teams.

AND I HAVE A DREAM… JJ need a good defensive coordinator– one with around 50 years experience and his DC during the 1999 turnaround and trek to the Sugar Bowl. Yes, GREG MacMACKIN dragged out of retirement by JJ. He’s not going to want a lot of money and won’t didi out for a better offer. I liked Mac.

  146. hitmanhart November 2, 2015 10:43 pm

wow joe moore wants Miano !! just now on khon2 news !! no love 4 jj ? lol jj = no hawaii five 0 !! still hurting joe !!! lol

If Matlin hires someone who runs a Pro-Style offense then he should be fired immediately….But, I think he is not that dumb (I hope) and I also hope the people who he is asking for advice is not that stupid either.

The only teams who can run the Pro-Style offense and do it with success are in the P5 conferences.

We guys in the non-BCS conferences will not succeed in a Pro-Style offense because we do not have the personal across the board and at least 2 deep in the depth chart to run that kind of offense and find success.

It is very hard to recruit in Hawaii because we are so far away from the mainland that we will always not have the personel to run anything other than a “system” “scheme” or “gimmick” (whatever you want to call it) type of offense.

As I mentioned earlier…Tomey had his different style of offense…So did Wags and Jones and they all found success….The only 2 coaches that failed miserably who tried to run a Pro-Style offense was Von Appen and Chow.

I hope that this is the last time we ever get a coach with that kind of offensive mentallity.

  148. pokesquid November 2, 2015 11:00 pm

    SteveM

I also like Mac as DC….but don’t think he would come back even if asked too.

Tom Mason was Jone’s DC at SMU and he did have a decent defense until the last 2 years with Jones…He has the many years of experience on the defensive side…Was an interm HC twice….I could play for him and his style…And if Jones does come back and Mac is not interested, I would definately keep him around for continuity and familarity on that side of the ball.

Remember…with the past Jones high flying offense the defenses only needs to bend and not break…LOL.

  149. Derek November 2, 2015 11:01 pm

June Jones said the most important trait in looking for a QB is accuracy. Therein is the problem for Hawaii’s QB under Chow. And that’s why Colt Brennan was so good. McKenzie Milton’s completion percentage is over 68%. That’s excellent. I’m excited for next season. Our offense needs to score a lot of points because the opponents offenses are very creative too. We have to be able to out score them to win. That’s the way UH won a lot of games under Jones. And it made for exciting games.

  150. pokesquid November 2, 2015 11:21 pm

    Derek..

You are correct…and one thing that I loved about how Jone’s trained his QBs to acquire and maintain their accuracy was to have them practice throwing the ball around until their freakin arms fell off…I remember hearing about how day in and day out all the QBs did was toss the ball…This created MUSCLE MEMORY.

Sound simple but it works ask any golfer, basketball player, etc.

McKenzie Milton would fit perfect into Jone’s offense and I really hope he stays home to play….I also hope WR Timoteo stays home as well….Wash St was/is courting him..and he was getting teased by all the passing they did…Well now that Chow is gone and hopefully if Jones comes back, he will stay home and catch for us instead.

I too am getting excited…if Jones comes back…he would have a good bunch of players to fit into his 4 WR….I can see Collie, Bernard, Ewaliko, and Ursua in the slot position…with Kemp, Stubs and hopefully Timoteo on the outside…QB with Zwahlen and hopefully Milton backing him up….not to mention maybe using Unga, Haggar and Torres in a outside set like how Gronk is used for NE.

  151. rundown808 November 2, 2015 11:22 pm

Thank you Chow for your service.
ST, told you rain was a blessing. Now Chow can live his life without pressure and UH can start to move forward. Whoever will be chosen as the HC may it bring new life to the program.
    Ok, on to recruiting.
ST, what say you on walk on WR Malik Lockett? Followed him and by the looks of it he looks like he’s the real deal. Got all the mechanics and goods of an elite player. Just by looking at combine times, video, and school interest. He’s got local ties and was ranked in the top 10 with Kennedy T in the 2012 Nike Combine before moving to FL. Would be a great start for UH. What’s the word? Where is he?

  152. RB November 2, 2015 11:22 pm

JJ wont come back. The only way he take the HC job is if UH drop “RAINBOW” from Rainbow Warrior. Hahahahaha

  153. cocobean November 2, 2015 11:39 pm

I caught But Serious also. I basically agree with what Demello and Curran had to say about what they would look for in the next head coach. DeMello – someone who could keep more local talent. Curran – someone who has a unique offense. BC expounded by saying coaches that found success here had unique offenses and rattled off Tomey, Wagner and JJ. I don’t think Tomey ran a unique offense. Tomey’s mantra always was play to give yourself a chance to win it in the 4th quarter by winning these battles – turnovers, field position, time of possession. Tomey hung his hat on a don’t beat yourself offense and a physical defense. He forgot to mention Mack ran a unique offense.

Great points that have been mentioned here before. Logically the ideal candidate would have both those qualities and an affinity to Hawaii to boot. The dream candidate would have those qualities plus the ability to recruit anywhere, the ability to assemble a solid staff, a leader of men personality who can “work” any room, an experienced DI coach with the energy of youth, an…………..etc.

  154. H-Man November 3, 2015 12:29 am

Former UH Athlete #92, I question the Gonzaga BB revenue of $8 mil that you have cited. In Gonzaga’s 2104 Athletic Annual Report, ticket sales revenue totaled $2,489,340 (14 sports programs). Their total athletic budget is $21,836,397. What’s interesting in this report is that Gonzaga athletics receives $8.7 million in institutional support, way more than what UH gives to its 21-program, athletics department.

  155. cappie the dog November 3, 2015 2:35 am

Hawaii was the last team to beat Gonzaga before they became GONZAGA.

    Second Round NIT.

Gonzaga was so angered by losing to Hawaii, they almost won the NCAAs the next year.

If Butler was George Brett and Gonzaga was his brother Ken, and Butler was giving a Hall of Fame speech, it would say: “Why me? And not you? When all I ever wanted was to be you.”

  156. Maddog50 November 3, 2015 4:29 am

Some rambling thoughts-how many will come out to support “your team” as it transitions to a better place? Wish I could but in spirit will only can make UNLV which will be my fourth game this year-lets do it! To any players who think of leaving or already have because of this dismissal-you will regret it because this is what you said you wanted and were convinced to do be a member of UH football-you don’t sign on for a coach no matter what. Guys who do this turn into nomads-and finally what this team need is “WWW” Winners-Workers-Warriors. They have some and need a lot more-KT comes to mind when I say this. So let’s get behind this deal and push pull and shove it forward-Best Wishes Coach N-proud to be a Warrior and supporter!

  157. Tempmanoa November 3, 2015 4:41 am

The upper limit pay officially authorized for the head coach position is $954,000. So there is room to move up for an outstanding candidate (assuming such a coach is the right guy for the job). The UH has been opposed to any more paying of coaches via private donations– Ben Jay said this, but I believe it was upper campus that wanted the ban. If we can remove the ban there are donors who would come forward with some support.

  158. pokesquid November 3, 2015 5:01 am

    Tempmanoa…

That is fine…but the problem is, what about the assistant coaches pay?….Pay the HC a top salary, but his assistants get peanuts…How good will they be?…The HC can’t do it all…Top notch DC and OC are just as important.

People forget about this guy from Clemson….who is now at SMU….I hope if not for JJ then we can maybe steal him away from SMU.

With JJ or Chad Morris…they both can run the offense themselves and that saves some money getting a OC to run things.

Still, I think we shouldn’t worry about getting those from the mainland who are hot right now…we should instead concentrate on getting the ones who want to be here and who can help get this program back to respectability Fast and not after 3 years of rebuilding…I, for one, can’t wait another 3 to 4 years for someone to rebuild this program.

JJ is the quick fix answer…He proved he can turn around a program…not once, but twice with Hawaii and SMU.

  159. Made in Hawaii November 3, 2015 5:45 am

Give the local coach’s a chance; keep our talented Hawaii high school players home, this should fill the stadium seats with proud family and friends. Give the kids the ultimate goal of getting a education and playing for their home state.

  160. Come on, Man! November 3, 2015 6:36 am

“we should instead concentrate on getting the ones who want to be here and who can help get this program back to respectability Fast and not after 3 years of rebuilding…I, for one, can’t wait another 3 to 4 years for someone to rebuild this program.”

if you’re not going to have realistic expectations then expect every new hire to be a failure.

  161. cappie the dog November 3, 2015 6:41 am

Given the names I’ve seen on the blog, this is how I would rank the candidates.

    1. Ivin Jasper(oh, wait, that’s just me)
    2. Beau Baldwin
    3. Rich Miano
    4. June Jones
    5. Chris Naeole(if he wins out, convincingly)

  162. Ferocious Macadocious November 3, 2015 7:38 am

On ESPN right now…. June Jones is heavily considering the move back to Hawaii and trying lure Jerry Glanville out of retirement. This could get interesting…

  163. Come on, man! November 3, 2015 8:11 am

why do people think rich miano would be a great head coaching candidate?

  164. RB November 3, 2015 8:20 am

wow my post got deleted. My God All I said was JJ wont come back unless UH drop “RAINBOW” from rainbow warriors nickname.

  165. SC November 3, 2015 8:24 am

Lots of speculation on the new head coach. Let’s wait to see the candidates that apply.

  166. Shoko November 3, 2015 8:25 am

Given the names I’ve seen on the blog, this is how I would rank the candidates by cost, which is going to be a big factor in who they hire.

    1. Jones
    2. Baldwin
    3. Jasper
    4. Miano
    5. Naeole

  167. letsgowarriors November 3, 2015 8:42 am

so who are the 8 new captains?

  168. Ipu Man November 3, 2015 8:47 am

If new head coach does not keep the current Defensive coach,
Then, I like Steve M’s #144 suggestion and bring back the big
    Mac…Greg MacMackin. 🙂

  169. Warrior Fan November 3, 2015 8:52 am

I know there’s a lot of excitement now to see who the next head coach is. Lets not forget to go out and support our team for these final games of the season. I still think we’ll all have to be patient with the new head coach (whomever it will be), he’s going to need sometime to recruit get his type of players that fit his system. Go Warriors!

  170. Warrior Fan November 3, 2015 8:56 am

I don’t think bringing back JJ and McMackin is the answer. We need to move forward with someone else. Remember although JJ had a lot of wins at UH, Boise St ran the WAC majority of the time JJ was the head coach. JJ was too concerned about having Timmy Chang break the all time passing record.. JJ hardly ever recruited local boys especially from Kahuku

  171. FearGod November 3, 2015 9:04 am

We all seen before and after pictures of former warriors who worked out with Chad Ikei prior to the NFL combine. It would be something to see if the next coach offered him the position as strength and conditioning coach. Give him 4 years.

  172. What??? November 3, 2015 9:08 am

Gonzaga gets a lot of $$ for making the NCAA tournament each year.

IMHO Mack cannot come back due to the reasons that ST alluded to a few days ago.

  173. cocobean November 3, 2015 9:24 am

Naeole doesn’t meet the minimum requirement – 5 years university or college experience. The last time the job was posted it limited the candidate pool to previous college or university head coaches or coordinators. That’s the reason Miano was not among the final group of candidates interviewed for the job.

I think Matlin was akamai in setting the minimum so low. You never know how many dynamic position coaches are out there waiting for their big break.

  174. seewhy November 3, 2015 9:40 am

To all you Mariota/Titans fans out there. Coach Ken Whisenhunt has just been fired. I wonder how this will fare out for Marcus.

  175. ai-eee-soos November 3, 2015 10:01 am

niner fans – mebbe trade even up Mariota / Kapernick.

    lol

  176. winning November 3, 2015 10:06 am

It would be a miracle if Mac came back as DC-after being fired? No Way! He may also have health issues. I agree with Joe Moore, Miano has the energy and salesmanship, is an extrovert and would run an exciting O. JJ was not known as a recruiter but has a great O mind. Miano would be an excellent recruiter. Both of these guys also are from UH, a very impt point. Hurry up already!!

  177. Shoko November 3, 2015 10:13 am

Niners would save six million to trade Kap but would still be on the hook for 10 million. His days are numbered. I blame the front office.

  178. mytake November 3, 2015 10:13 am

AD wants someone who understands Hawaii. He just eliminated a whole lot of people.

  179. mytake November 3, 2015 10:15 am

He also wants to wait for the end of football season. So you can narrow it down to a person with Hawaii ties who is presently coaching somewhere.

  180. winning November 3, 2015 10:20 am

One more thing, both JJ and Miano are not financially strapped, they can live a comfortable life here in Paradise. I dont think they are looking for big bucks. I have a hunch that they love the state and school, especially with Maitlin as AD. Matter of fact, Maitlin reminds us of Sheriff and Nagel.

  181. Old School Dave November 3, 2015 10:20 am

Very happy that AD Dave Maltlin has the ball rolling will make the hire. Never easy to relieve someone of their job, but Matlin did it respectfully under such a difficult situation. Everyone needs to take a step back and let Matlin do his job and make the “right” hire. Don’t want people to start hating because their own choice for head coach wasn’t the one hired or even interviewed. Need to show our support for the AD as everything will be on him with the hire. Fun to speculate, though.

It will crucial to see how much the boosters can come up with to make the salary of the head coach and the salaries of the assistants competitive and attractive, given the current financial situation. No more GAs as position coaches.

  182. Inyoface November 3, 2015 10:22 am

    Lets hire Mike Ditka!

  183. Old School Dave November 3, 2015 10:27 am

Article on EWU’s Beau Baldwin from last season. Hope he’s contacted and interested in the UH job. Mackenzie Milton playing under his system would be very interesting (see former EWU QB Vernon Adams, now at Oregon). Head coaches at the FCS level like Baldwin are used to winning, in spite of getting by on less resources.

  184. Warrior Fan November 3, 2015 10:28 am

    we should hire dino babers

  185. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 3, 2015 10:43 am

    Old School Dave,

There is always a Yin to the Yang.

UNLV went with an incredibly successful FCS head coach by the name of Bobby Hauck who managed to run UNLV’s football program even further into the ground from where it came.

  186. RB November 3, 2015 10:55 am

Wow my 2nd post about JJ gets deleted again. Who screens the post? Get a life!!!!

  187. Derek November 3, 2015 10:58 am

Towards the end of Mac’s tenure there were signs that he seemed to be a little slow or in a daze, like he had symptoms of dementia. Remember, he couldn’t remember the kicker’s name. I hope he’s okay, but to me I think he’s retired now. I remember him saying he wanted Hawaii to be the Miami-Fla. of the West. It’s ironic that Miami-Fla. (East) is also having a tough go right now and looking for a new Head Coach too. Like Chow, McMackin was a nice man. Leo Durocher once said, nice guys finish last. In football, winning coaches are not only smart, but are tough minded, demand excellence, workaholics, recruit hard, and are internal fiery people with occasional bouts of outbursts. Eventually, this takes a toll on their health an well being. But, that’s the business.

  188. RB November 3, 2015 10:58 am

Lets try this again for the 3rd time. JJ wont come back unless UH drop the “RAINBOWS” from the Rainbow Warriors nickname.

  189. A-House November 3, 2015 10:59 am

my most interest in not who will be the best HC, but who Matlin will contact/listen to before making his selection and hope he has a 1, 2, 3, 4 list as #1 may refuse.

hot dog! interest is heating up and the hot air balloon is on the rise!!!!!!

  190. FearGod November 3, 2015 11:02 am

    new post up ?

  191. Shoko November 3, 2015 11:03 am

    Please hire Jim Tomsula.

  192. AdmrVT November 3, 2015 11:12 am

#168. It is also because he (UH) cannot afford anyone with better “paper credentials,” so they need to lower their “expectations.” Time to throw the Hail Mary.

  193. seewhy November 3, 2015 11:24 am

If JJ comes back, can we please see another receiving core like the dread heads. I’m tired of seeing our current WR’s do renditions of Snoop Dogg and Pharrell’s 2004 hit song.

  194. Asian Warrior November 3, 2015 11:26 am

I posted earlier that JJ should be brought back which is still my dream but it is short sighted. What we need is Cal Lee and his staff. JJ would be great but no longevity for the program. We need a local guy the people can rally behind and we need stop bringing in strangers ( stranger danger). Cal understands the culture and can bring back some former players from St. Louis who played ball elsewhere to recruit the mainland boys.

He is as offensive minded as anyone out there but carries a strong desire for defense which wins championships. Offense is fun but it means we get embarrassed by national teams on national TV…remember the Sugar Bowl. I rather watch us win 3-0 than lose 55-52 because we couldn’t stop them at the end. I’ll say it again DEFENSE wins championships. Anyone remember the Ohio St. game? yeah we loss 38-0 but did you see sports center or any other network comment on how well our defense looked against Ohio St. people across America was impressed that a no talent team like UH could kind of stop Ohio St. with the 5star studs they had…I know the talent thing won out in the end but our defense was awesome. Then something happened.

  195. Waikapu November 3, 2015 11:28 am
